Terrence Howard Opposite Jennifer Hudson in "Winnie" (A Negromancer News Bits & Bites Extra)

South African filmmaker Darrell J. Roodt (Father Hood and Cry, the Beloved Country) is directing a film called, "Winnie," with the screenplay based on the Anne Marie du Preez Bezdrob biography, Winnie Mandela: A Life.  Jennifer Hudon has been cast as Winnie Mandela.

Now, according to Hollywood trade paper, Variety, Terrence Howard has been tapped to play Nelson Mandela, South Africa's first black president and Winnie's former husband.  The article at AOL Black Voices' "BV on Movies" blog has more information.

I do remember that there was some controversy in South Africa over the casting of Hudson as Winnie Mandela, and the BV article does mention it.  I have to say that I'm not crazy about this casting either, but I look forward to being surprised.

  1. Thank you for letting us know that you are not crazy about the casting of Winnie. However I beg the difference. I love the casting of Winnie, and I also believe Jen and Terrence will deliver big. See we all have opinions even if it has no weight. Jennifer Hudson ship is about to set sail, and people are now starting to come aboard. Haters have been trying to cripple this young multi-talented super star for sometime now. See when God has favor on your life; you will always be successful no matter who are what. The best female vocalist in the business today hands down.

  2. I think you read too much into my post. I'm not a Jennifer Hudson hater. I would have been angry had she not won her Oscar, and I certainly thought she deserved her Grammy.

Perhaps, I just don't have as much invested in her as you do, but best wishes to both of you. I still am not crazy about the casting, but I'll say again that I will see the film.
