Stellar series stars Greg Cipes, Scott Menville, Khary Payton, Tara Strong and Hynden Walch are joined by Arnett and Bell to bring “Teen Titans GO!” to the big screen

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Warner Bros. Pictures announced that Will Arnett (“The LEGO® Batman Movie”) and Kristen Bell (“Frozen”) will lend their voices to the first-ever big-screen version of DC Entertainment’s animated TV series “Teen Titans GO!”—the aptly titled “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies.”

The animated feature will also star Greg Cipes (TV’s “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles”) as Beast Boy, Scott Menville (TV’s “Spider-Man”) as Robin, Khary Payton (“The Walking Dead”) as Cyborg, Tara Strong (the “My Little Pony” franchise) as Raven, and Hynden Walch (TV’s “Adventure Time with Finn & Jake”) as Starfire. In the film, they reprise their roles from the Cartoon Network series, which follows the crimefighting adventures and antics of the young Super Hero roommates.

The film will be directed by Aaron Horvath and Peter Rida Michail, from a screenplay by Michael Jelenic and Horvath, based on characters from DC. Michail, Will Arnett and Peggy Regan are producing, with Sam Register, Jelenic and Horvath serving as executive producers. Apart from Arnett, all are “Teen Titans GO!” series contributors.

No stranger to voice acting or superheroes, Arnett played the title role in this year’s hit animated Super Hero feature “The LEGO Batman Movie,” after creating the character in the wildly popular “The LEGO Movie.” He also voices the lead in the fan favorite Netflix series “BoJack Horseman.”

Bell starred as the voice of Anna in one of the most successful animated films of all time, “Frozen,” and has since lent her voice to the hit “Zootopia.” She can also be heard alongside Arnett in an episode of “BoJack Horseman.”

Set to release on July 27, 2018, “Teen Titans GO! to the Movies” will be distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Starz Adapts Best-selling Novel, "Sweetbitter," for Television

Starz Greenlights Savory Drama Series “Sweetbitter”

Casting Currently Underway for the Half-Hour Scripted Drama Based on the Best-Selling Novel

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht announced that the network has ordered straight to series six half-hour episodes of the scripted drama “Sweetbitter,” based on the national best-selling novel of the same name written by Stephanie Danler.

“This has already been a thrilling ride, and I can't wait for everyone to see how we expanded the world and characters beyond the book”

“Stephanie’s smart, sensory and genuine storytelling is set in the world of high-end dining, fueled by too much debauchery, drugs and French wine,” said Albrecht. “Stephanie, Stu and Plan B have found an exciting way to translate the celebration of senses depicted in the book to the screen, and along the way, will post a love letter to New York City. We look forward to announcing our Tess, Jake, Simone and Howard soon.”

Previously announced as a development project for the network in July, Danler has written the script for the first episode. Stu Zicherman (“The Americans,” “The Affair,” “Six Degrees”) joins Danler, and both will serve as executive producers along with Plan B Entertainment. Donna Bloom will serve as producer on the six-episode freshman season. Laura Rosenthal is currently leading the ongoing casting search.

“This has already been a thrilling ride, and I can't wait for everyone to see how we expanded the world and characters beyond the book,” said Danler. “I've been working with the most brilliant and generous people, and am extremely grateful. It's an honor to show up to work every day.”

“Sweetbitter” follows 22-year-old Tess who, shortly after arriving in New York City, lands a job at a celebrated downtown restaurant. Swiftly introduced to the world of drugs, alcohol, love, lust, dive bars, and fine dining, she learns to navigate the chaotically alluring, yet punishing life she has stumbled upon. This is the story of a young woman’s coming-of-age, set against the rich and grimy backdrop of exclusive restaurants, conjuring a nonstop and high-adrenaline world evoking the possibility, beauty, and fragility of being young and adrift.

Starz retains all global distribution and home entertainment rights to the series.

Senior Vice President of Original Programming Ken Segna, Vice President of Original Programming Patrick McDonald and Senior Coordinator of Original Programming Samantha Offsay are the Starz executives in charge of “Sweetbitter.”

Review: First "Boo! A Madea Halloween" Not One of the Better Madea Movies

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 20 (of 2017) by Leroy Douresseaux

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

Boo! A Madea Halloween (2016)
Running time:  104 minutes (1 hour, 44 minutes)
MPAA – PG-13 for drug use and references, suggestive content, language, some horror images and thematic material
WRITER/DIRECTOR:  Tyler Perry
PRODUCERS:  Ozzie Areu, Tyler Perry, and Will Areu
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Richard Vialet (D.o.P.)
EDITOR:  Larry Sexton
COMPOSER:  Elvin Ross

HALLOWEEN/COMEDY

Starring:  Tyler Perry, Cassi Davis, Patrice Lovely, Bella Thorne, Yousef Erakat, Lexy Panterra, Andre Hall, Brock O'Hurn, Liza Koshy, Diamond White, Mike Tornabene, Javan Johnson, Angela Ray, and Tyga

Boo! A Madea Halloween is a 2016 comedy and Halloween movie from writer-director Tyler Perry.  The idea for this film originated from a fictitious Madea Halloween movie (entitled “Boo!”) that was referenced several times in writer-director Chris Rock's film, Top Five (2014).  In Boo! A Madea Halloween, Madea fends off noisy spirits and evil clowns while keeping an eye on two high school girls who want to party with a gang of college frat boys.

Boo! A Madea Halloween begins about mid-day on Halloween.  At Upsilon Theta college fraternity house. Jonathan (Yousef Erakat), the fraternity leader, and his fellow fraternity brothers are finalizing plans for their big Halloween party for that night.  The brothers take notice of 17-year-old Tiffany Simmons (Diamond White) and her three friends, 17-year-old Aday (Liza Koshy), 18-year-old Rain (Bella Thorne) and 18-year-old Leah (Lexy Panterra), as they walk past their fraternity house.  Jonathan invites the four teens to their party.

However, Tiffany's father, Brian Simmons (Tyler Perry), does not want Tiffany and Aday to attend the party because, at the age of 17, they are too young to be partying with college-age young men.  Sensing that his daughter will disobey him, Brian convinces his aunt, Mabel “Madea” Simmons (Tyler Perry), to stay at his house and babysit Tiffany.  Madea's brother, Joe Simmons (Tyler Perry), who is Brian's father; marijuana aficionado, Betty Ann “Aunt Bam” Murphy (Cassi Davis); and Joe's lover, Hattie Mae Love (Patrice Lovely), tag along.

Madea is strict, but Tiffany proves to be more stubborn and also craftier than Madea expects.  When she discovers that Tiffany and Aday have indeed gone to the fraternity party, Madea is ready to deal out some punishment; instead, this pugnacious matron will spend a haunted Halloween dealing with ghosts, goblins, ghouls, poltergeists, zombies, and killer clowns.

Boo! A Madea Halloween has its moments.  It is a Madea movie after all, and if you enjoy the antics of Tyler Perry's most beloved character, Mabel “Madea” Simmons, you will find something or some things to like about Boo! A Madea Halloween.  However, it is the weakest “Madea-verse” movie since Meet the Browns (2008), in which Madea only made a cameo appearance.

I like Boo!'s young and diverse cast, although I wish the characters lived up to the energy brought by the young actors.  The youthful energy is needed because characters that are old favorites have worn out their welcome; Aunt Bam, I'm looking at you.  And Uncle Joe isn't at his best here.

This isn't one of Tyler Perry's better efforts at playing Madea, but there is a gem or two here (such as Madea in church, wanting to be “saved”).  It is only a passable Halloween movie.  That said, I want more Madea and there is a sequel to Boo!, due this fall.  So, it is fair to say that Boo! A Madea Halloween is strictly for Madea fans.

Amazon Signs Deal with Serial Sexual Harasser Casey Affleck

Amazon Studios Pacts with Casey Affleck’s Sea Change Media on First-Look Production Deal

The “Manchester by the Sea” Academy Award-winning Actor will have a Two-Year Production Deal with Amazon Studios

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ: AMZN)— Amazon Studios has closed an exclusive first-look production deal with Oscar winner Casey Affleck under his new production banner Sea Change Media. The two-year deal will cover both film and television projects.

“Casey is not only a brilliant actor as we’ve seen in Manchester by the Sea, but also has a profound sense for powerful and affective storytelling”

Last year, Affleck and Amazon Studios worked together on Kenneth Lonergan's highly acclaimed feature Manchester by the Sea, which earned Affleck numerous awards including a Golden Globe, BAFTA and ultimately the Academy Award for Best Actor. Manchester by the Sea is available now for streaming and download on Prime Video.

“This deal with Casey exemplifies our focus in expanding Amazon Studios’ relationships with top-notch filmmakers and content creators,” said Roy Price, Head of Amazon Studios. “Our goal is to be in business with high caliber talent in order to grow our slate of quality content for our customers.”

“Casey is not only a brilliant actor as we’ve seen in Manchester by the Sea, but also has a profound sense for powerful and affective storytelling,” said Jason Ropell, VP of Worldwide Motion Pictures, Amazon Studios. “We are excited to further our relationship with Casey and look forward to our future collaborations.”

Sea Change Media looks to develop bold, authentic, smart content, shining a light on underrepresented voices and stories, and operating with a philosophy of inclusivity and collaboration. Whitaker Lader serves as head of production and development.

Affleck is currently in post-production on his directorial feature Light of my Life, which he also wrote and stars in. The story follows a father (Affleck) and daughter living on the outskirts of society destabilized by a deadly pandemic. Reuniting with director David Lowery for the third time, he recently wrapped The Old Man and the Gun, starring opposite Robert Redford and Sissy Spacek. Up next, Affleck is set to star in Stoner for director Joe Wright, based on the beloved 1965 novel by John Williams.

As previously announced, Amazon Studios have exclusive first-look production deals with Bona Fide Productions, Killer Films and Le Grisbi Productions.

Affleck is represented by WME and Ziffren Brittenham.

Review: "Spider-Man: Homecoming" Sparkly Fresh New

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 19 (of 2017) by Leroy Douresseaux

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)
Running time: 133 minutes (2 hour, 13 minutes)
MPAA – PG-13 for sequences of sci-fi/action and violence
DIRECTOR: Jon Watts
WRITERS:  Jonathan Goldstein, John Francis Daley, Jon Watts, Christopher Ford, Chris McKenna, and Erik Sommers; from a screen story by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (based upon the Marvel comic book by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko)
PRODUCERS: Amy Pascal and Kevin Feige
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Salvatore Totino
EDITORS: Debbie Berman and Dan Lebental
COMPOSER: Michael Giacchino

SUPERHERO/ACTION/ADVENTURE/DRAMA

Starring:  Tom Holland, Michael Keaton, Robert Downey, Jr., Marisa Tomei, Jon Favreau, Gwyneth Paltrow, Zendaya, Donald Glover, Jacob Batalon, Laura Harrier, Tony Revolori, Bokeem Woodbine, Tyne Daly, Abraham Attah, Hannibal Buress, Michael Chernus, Garcelle Beauvais, Chris Evans, Stan Lee, and Jennifer Connelly (voice)

Spider-Man: Homecoming is a 2017 superhero film and drama from director Jon Watts.  It is the sixth film in Columbia Picture's Spider-Man film franchise, but it is the first in a new film trilogy.  Spider-Man: Homecoming is also a co-production between Columbia and Marvel Studios, making it the sixteenth film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Homecoming finds Peter Parker trying to balance his life as a new threat to the safety of New York City emerges.

Spider-Man: Homecoming focuses on Peter Parker (Tom Holland), who is the superhero, Spider-Man.  Peter quits his high school's academic decathlon team so that he can spend more time focusing on his crime-fighting activities as Spider-Man.  He tells his guardian, Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), his friend, Ned (Jacob Batalon), and his classmates that he needs to spend more time on the “Stark internship” given to him by Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey, Jr.).

One night while patrolling his neighborhood, Spider-Man sees a group of criminals robbing an ATM.  Upon confronting them, Spider-Man discovers that they are using highly-advanced weapons to which they should not have access.  Through tenacious investigating, Peter learns that the weapons are being produced by Adrian Toomes (Michael Keaton), who owns a salvage company, by using alien technology he scavenges and steals as necessary.  Peter is determined to stop Toomes, who wears a high-tech Vulture-like suit.  However, Peter's Spider-Man activities are causing friction between him and his mentor, Tony Stark, and threatens not only Peter's life, but also the life of everyone close to him.

I really liked Tobey Maguire as Peter Parker/Spider-Man in director's Sam Raimi's three Spider-Man films that started the Sony Pictures Spider-Man film franchise, although I thought that only Spider-Man 2 (2004) was really good.  I liked Andrew Garfield in 2012's The Amazing Spider-Man, which I thought, at the time, to be the best Spider-Man film.

I don't know if I am ready to give up on Tobey Maguire as the best Peter Parker, but I think that Spider-Man: Homecoming is the best Spider-Man feature film yet.  Homecoming really sells the idea that it is about a 15-year-old playing superhero, and the film feels like a teen movie as much as it does as a superhero movie.  It is lighthearted and angsty like one of those John Hughes movies from the 1980s (say Pretty in Pink or Sixteen Candles).

At the same time, Spider-Man: Homecoming reminds me of Marvel Studios' first Marvel Cinematic Universe film, Iron Man (2008).  It is not ironic or coincidental that Homecoming features the movie star (Robert Downey, Jr.) and character from that 2008 film.  Like Iron Man, Homecoming focuses on making Peter Parker the center of the story, making Spider-Man a role that Peter plays.  Spider-Man is not the most important role in Peter's life; Peter's most important role is being himself.  One could say that the first Iron Man movie was about about Tony Stark (as played by Downey) than it was about Iron Man.  So it makes sense for Downey/Stark/Iron Man to appear in Homecoming to help Peter Parker find himself as Spider-Man by first finding himself.

Tom Holland gives a superb performance as Peter Parker.  His performance seems to create a heroic arc in which Peter finds himself as Spider-Man, but most importantly, finds himself and learns what is most important – how to be the best Peter Parker so that he can be the most effective Spider-Man.  [Of note, Homecoming is not an origin story and Parker is already Spider-Man when the film begins.]

Late in life, Michael Keaton seems to be convincing more and more people of just how good an actor he is.  Keaton and his villainous role (“The Vulture,” although he is never called that in the film) turn out to be quite important to this film because Keaton's performance and the character he plays are a mirror of Peter Parker's situation in many ways.  Keaton is so good and effective in this movie that he has earned the right to return in a future film.

Homecoming also features a number of good supporting performances besides Robert Downey, Jr.  Jacob Batalon is just right as Peter's friend, Ned, who is the perfect sidekick and guy-back-at-the-base.  Disney Channel star, Zendaya, makes the most of her role as Michelle Jones, and left me wanting to see much more of her.  As Peter's Aunt May, Marisa Tomei also demands more screen time.

I love Spider-Man: Homecoming.  It is the Spider-Man movie that I have been wanting ever since I first saw Sam Raimi's 2002 Spider-Man.  Spider-Man: Homecoming captures the magic, the sense of wonder, the imagination, and the freshness of Spider-Man's first appearance, a 12-page story included in the comic book, Amazing Fantasy #15 (1962)
