About Sinners:
From Ryan Coogler — director of Black Panther and Creed — and starring Michael B. Jordan comes Sinners.

After chasing success in the North, twin brothers Smoke and Stack (Jordan) return to their hometown of Clarksdale, Mississippi to open a juke joint. As music and dance meld in celebration of artistry, culture and history, an evil descends, threatening to devour the heart and soul of the community.

“You keep dancing with the devil, one day he’s gonna follow you home.”

Written and directed by Academy Award-nominated filmmaker Coogler, Sinners stars Jordan in a dual role, joined by Oscar nominee Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller, and Delroy Lindo.

Coogler designed the film with IMAX in mind, lensing on both their proprietary IMAX 15/65mm cameras and on Ultra Panavision 70 cameras (65mm film with anamorphic lenses, creating a super-wide 2.76:1 aspect ratio).

The film is produced by Zinzi Coogler, Sev Ohanian and Ryan Coogler. The executive producers are Ludwig Göransson, Will Greenfield and Rebecca Cho.

Coogler’s behind-the-camera artisans include his Black Panther franchise collaborators: director of photography Autumn Durald Arkapaw, Oscar-winning production designer Hannah Beachler, editor Michael P. Shawver, Oscar-winning composer Ludwig Göransson, and Oscar-winning costume designer Ruth E. Carter.

Warner Bros. Pictures presents A Proximity Media Production: Sinners. The film is distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures.

LAIKA and the Obama's "Higher Ground" Unite for "Audition"

Higher Ground and LAIKA Partner on Live Action Feature Film Audition; Lulu Wang to Direct With Lucy Liu and Charles Melton Starring
Share

Wang and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok Will Adapt Katie Kitamura’s Booker Prize Longlisted Novel

HILLSBORO, Ore. & LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Higher Ground Productions and LAIKA have set a live action feature film adaptation of Audition (Penguin Random House imprint Riverhead Books, 2025), the Booker Prize-longlisted novel by Katie Kitamura.

Lulu Wang (The Farewell) will direct and write the adaptation alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok, with Lucy Liu and Charles Melton set to star. Higher Ground and LAIKA will produce the film in association with Wang’s production company Local Time.

Audition is a twisty thriller that follows a celebrated actress enjoying a charmed, bohemian life in Manhattan with her creative husband. That is until a mysterious young man appears, claiming to be her long-lost son. What begins as a misguided reunion spirals into an enthralling mystery about identity, guilt, and the roles we perform.

President Barack Obama, who founded Higher Ground with Michelle Obama, included Audition in his 2025 Summer reading list, declaring the book a “quiet novel about the ways we hide our true selves from others – and ourselves.”

“Katie Kitamura’s Audition is a masterfully crafted psychological thriller that explores the complex layers of identity and performance,” said Higher Ground’s Head of Film Anikah McLaren. “We’re thrilled to partner with LAIKA and Lulu, an incredibly talented and poignant filmmaker, to adapt this compelling narrative about family, deception, and self-discovery.”

“At LAIKA, we are always seeking out bold, emotional, and inventive stories, and Katie Kitamura’s Audition is exactly that,” said Matt Levin, President of Live Action Film & Series. “Lulu Wang is a brilliant and daring filmmaker we've long admired, and her unique vision and Higher Ground’s commitment to powerful storytelling make them the perfect partners to bring this extraordinary novel to the screen.”

“Bringing Katie Kitamura’s Audition to the screen is a thrilling challenge,” said Wang. “What makes it feel possible, and electrifying, is working with Lucy Liu and Charles Melton. They’re both such magnetic performers and I can’t imagine better collaborators to step into this story with.”

Higher Ground’s Vinnie Malhotra and Anikah McLaren, LAIKA’s Travis Knight and Matt Levin, and Lulu Wang are producers. Lucy Liu, LAIKA’s Jeremy Kipp Walker and author Katie Kitamura are executive producers.

Since Higher Ground’s debut film American Factory won the 2019 Academy Award® for Best Documentary Feature, the company has produced a range of acclaimed movies, including the apocalyptic thriller Leave the World Behind (currently #8 on the Netflix all time Most Popular Movies List). The company's diverse film portfolio includes Rustin, American Symphony, Crip Camp, Fatherhood, Becoming, and Worth.

Higher Ground and LAIKA are both represented by CAA. Lulu Wang and Local Time are represented by CAA and management company Redefine Entertainment. Martyna Martok is repped by CAA and management firm Kaplan Perrone Entertainment. Lucy Liu is repped by CAA and management company Framework Entertainment. Melton is repped by 111 Media, CAA, and Johnson Shapiro Slewett & Kole. Katie Kitamura is repped by Trident Media Group and Anonymous Content.

Lulu Wang is coming off her work on Expats, the limited series adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee’s bestselling novel. She served as showrunner, writer, and director of all six episodes. The series, which premiered on Prime Video, featured an ensemble cast led by Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Ji-Young Yoo, Jack Huston, and Brian Tee. Wang is also producing two highly anticipated projects for Searchlight Pictures: Again Again Again, penned by celebrated comedian and writer Joel Kim Booster, and The Eyes are the Best Part, marking the directorial debut of actress and writer Greta Lee. Wang first rose to international prominence with her sophomore feature, The Farewell, which she wrote and directed. The A24 breakout became a cultural phenomenon, earning the Film Independent Spirit Award for Best Feature and a Golden Globe nomination for Best Motion Picture – Foreign Language.

Lucy Liu is a critically acclaimed actress, filmmaker, and artist with a global presence. Known for her roles in Kill Bill, Charlie’s Angels, Chicago, Presence, and Red One, her films have collectively grossed over $3.7 billion worldwide. Liu’s recent work includes starring in and producing Rosemead, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won Best Narrative at the Bentonville Film Festival, where she was honored with the Rising To The Challenge Award. Liu's groundbreaking career began with a 1999 Emmy nomination for her role in Ally McBeal, a landmark achievement that set the stage for her diverse career in television and film. As a producer, she has championed a range of impactful documentaries, including Freedom’s Fury and Redlight, as well as the Emmy-nominated VR experience The Pirate Queen. As a visual artist and UNICEF Ambassador for over 20 years, Liu advocates for women and children globally. In 2019, she received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, becoming only the second Asian American woman to do so in nearly 60 years.

Charles Melton is an award-winning and critically acclaimed actor who has captivated audiences with his performances in film and television. Melton most recently starred opposite Oscar® winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes' film May December, for which he earned a Gotham Award and New York Film Critics Circle Award, among others. Both the film and Melton’s performance were nominated for the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and Film Independent Spirit Awards. Associated Press named him one of the top Breakthrough Performers of 2023, and Variety included him as 10 Actors to Watch. Melton has wrapped production on Nicolas Winding Refn’s My Own Private Hell for Neon. Up next, he will star in the second season of the highly anticipated Netflix Emmy® winning series Beef opposite Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Cailee Spaeny. Other credits include Alex Garland’s Warfare for A24, the Warner Bros.’ feature, The Sun Is Also a Star and Sony’s Bad Boys for Life. On television, he starred in the Emmy nominated mystery-drama series Poker Face opposite Natasha Lyonne, Mel Brooks’ History of the World, Part II for Hulu, and The CW hit series Riverdale. As a Global Ambassador with the Special Olympics organization, Melton advocates for the inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities through education and sports.

Martyna Majok was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her Broadway debut play, Cost of Living, which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. Other plays include Sanctuary City, Queens, and Ironbound, which have been produced across American and international stages, and the libretto for Gatsby: An American Myth, with music by Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett. Martyna is currently adapting Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 for the Broadway stage, has developed TV projects for HBO, and is working on several feature adaptations. Her adaptation of the Atticus Lish novel Preparation for the Next Life will be released by MGM/Orion on September 5th, directed by Bing Liu with Plan B producing alongside Barry Jenkins' Pastel.

Katie Kitamura is the author of five novels, most recently Audition, which is longlisted for the Booker Prize, and Intimacies, which was named one of the New York Times 10 Best Books of 2021, longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and a finalist for a Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Literature, fellowships from the Cullman Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and many other honors. Her work has been translated into 21 languages. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Powered by widespread critical praise and enthusiastic word-of-mouth, James Gunn’s Superman continues to soar at the worldwide box office, flying past the $600 million mark on Friday, August 22, 2025. The announcement was made today by Jeff Goldstein, President, Warner Bros. Pictures Global Distribution.

The vanguard feature launching Gunn and producer Peter Safran’s unified DC Universe, Superman continues to prove a powerful draw at theaters around the world, earning an impressive $344 million and counting in North America, $88 million coming from IMAX® and other large format venues; and $256 million in 78 territories overseas, with consistently strong showings in the UK [$37M], Mexico [$23M], Brazil [$16M], Australia [$16M] and France [$15M], among other markets.

In making the announcement, Goldstein stated, “These incredible results demonstrate that James’s vision for this iconic character is resonating in a big way with audiences here and across the globe. It is a rare and exciting thing for a film to perform at this level so far into its run, but the consistently strong word-of-mouth and minimal drops we’re seeing from week to week tell us that not only are people returning to experience Superman again and again in theaters, they’re bringing their friends and family along for the ride. It’s a tremendous achievement for James, Peter, the brilliant cast and crew, and everyone involved in the film, and we congratulate all of them on this fantastic milestone.”

Gunn and Safran added, “We continue to be overwhelmed and inspired by the energy and enthusiasm of our magnificent global audience – and that spans not only longtime DC fans but newcomers of every age worldwide who are discovering these seminal characters and their amazing universe for the first time. These results are a tribute to their passion for not only Superman but movies and theatrical movie-going, and we couldn’t be more thrilled to have all of them with us as we embark on this incredible journey.”

From DC Studios, Superman soared into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures. In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC Universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music has released the highly anticipated Superman (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack), featuring music from composers John Murphy and David Fleming as featured in Superman from director/writer/producer James Gunn and DC Studios, which opens in US theaters July 11, 2025. Mondoshop.com will be starting pre-order of the 2x LP vinyl on July 11th with 2 different color options: - Blue/ Red / White Spinner and - Solid Red / Blue

To meet the scale of Superman, James Gunn turned to longtime collaborator John Murphy, who introduced sweeping new themes for Lois and Clark and Lex Luthor, while reimagining John Williams' iconic Superman melody with a striking electric guitar arrangement. Emmy-winning composer David Fleming later joined the project, contributing bold new orchestral arrangements of the Williams theme alongside fresh, character-driven motifs for the Justice Gang, the Daily Planet, and Krypto. Together, their dynamic score ensures Superman soars for a new generation.

Murphy shares, "From the start, James and I knew we wanted to honor Superman’s legacy while creating something bold and new. There’s such purity in the character, and I wanted that reflected in the music - noble, orchestral, timeless, while still finding moments to experiment and push the boundaries."

Fleming adds, "There’s a deep emotional core to this Superman, and musically it was about tapping into that humanity. Reimagining the iconic theme while building new ones. From The Daily Planet to the Justice Gang, it was a chance to explore his world in a way that felt classic and completely fresh."

DC Studios heads Peter Safran and Gunn are producing the film, which Gunn directs from his own screenplay, based on characters from DC, Superman created by Jerry Siegel and Joe Shuster.

When Superman is drawn into conflicts both abroad and at home, his actions to protect humankind are questioned, and his vulnerability allows tech billionaire and master deceiver Lex Luthor to leverage the opportunity to get Superman out of the way for good. Will the Daily Planet’s intrepid reporter Lois Lane, together with the aid of Metropolis’s other metahumans and Superman’s own four-legged companion, Krypto, be able to help Superman before Luthor can completely destroy him?

DC Studios Presents a Troll Court Entertainment/The Safran Company Production, A James Gunn Film, Superman will be in theaters and IMAX® nationwide on July 11, 2025, and internationally beginning July 9, 2025, distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

LAIKA’S ParaNorman Returns to the Big Screen in Remastered RealD 3D for Exclusive Halloween Run Featuring a Brand-New CG Short Film Starring Anna Kendrick and Finn Wolfhard

Limited engagement includes the world premiere of ParaNorman: The Thrifting

Following the record-breaking 2024 re-release of Coraline, LAIKA once again partners with Fathom Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing to bring this Halloween event to the global moviegoing audience original LAIKA to Re-Release ParaNorman.

LAIKA to Re-Release ParaNorman.

A Blu-ray collection of Laika's biggest films can be found at Amazon.

ANNECY, France & HILLSBORO, Ore. & DENVER & LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LAIKA’s award-winning stop-motion animated film ParaNorman returns this Halloween for a one-week theatrical engagement.

As with the record-breaking 15th Anniversary 2024 re-release of Coraline in 2D and RealD 3D, LAIKA will bring the gloriously remastered ParaNorman (originally released in 2012) to global audiences in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing in international markets premiering Thursday, October 23, 2025 and Fathom Entertainment in the US premiering Saturday, October 25, 2025.

LAIKA’s delightful second film, which garnered multiple awards including Oscar®, BAFTA® and Golden Globe nominations, as well as multiple ANNIE Awards®, was written by Chris Butler (Missing Link, ParaNorman) and directed by Butler and Sam Fell (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget). Offered in stunning, newly remastered RealD 3D and 2D formats, ParaNorman’s return launches a year-long 20th Anniversary celebration of LAIKA, it was announced today at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

The studio’s new, CG animated short film, ParaNorman: The Thrifting is directed by LAIKA’s lead character designer Thibault LeClercq and written by Chris Butler. The short features the voice work of "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard and Anna Kendrick reprising her role of Norman’s older sister, Courtney Babcock. Produced in association with Passion Pictures, ParaNorman: The Thrifting will be attached to the re-release screenings.

Coraline’s re-release success last year signaled an audience desire for repertory cinema as moviegoers re-discover older films, especially accessible horror titles that families can enjoy together. Coraline’s return scored $56M in worldwide box office, making it one of the biggest global film re-releases of the past decade and the highest grossing stop-motion movie of all time.

“ParaNorman was a breakthrough film for LAIKA -- emotionally rich, visually daring, and proudly weird in all the right ways,” said LAIKA’s Chief Marketing & Operations Officer David Burke. “Bringing it back to theaters in stunning remastered 3D, paired with a brand-new short film, is an invitation for audiences to rediscover the heart and humor of Norman’s world -- or experience it for the first time. Today, horror has become a shared family ritual, and ParaNorman sits right at the intersection of spooky and meaningful. It’s the perfect ‘starter horror’ -- a gateway into genre storytelling that’s as thoughtful as it is thrilling.”

”Fathom is very pleased to extend our distribution partnership with LAIKA and bring the critically acclaimed ParaNorman back to US audiences this Halloween in both 2D and RealD 3D and with the exclusive consumer added value feature, ParaNorman: The Thrifting,” said Ray Nutt, Fathom Entertainment’s Chief Executive Officer. “Coraline consumers voted with their wallets last year, resulting in approximately 70% of the record-breaking $34M+ U.S. theatrical box office coming in 3D. ParaNorman is the ideal, spooky follow-up for audiences to enjoy on the big screen later this year.”

“Following the incredible global response to Coraline's theatrical re-release, which surpassed its original box office run in some international markets, we’re thrilled to partner with LAIKA once again to bring ParaNorman back to the big screen this Fall,” said Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing. “ParaNorman is a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film that deserves to be experienced in theaters -- both in 2D and in vividly remastered RealD 3D. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to rediscover this groundbreaking stop-motion classic.”

"The Alto Knights" Soundtrack Now Available

The Alto Knights (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack) Available Now

THE ALTO KNIGHTS Original Motion Picture Soundtrack - Music by David Fleming

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music is excited to announce the release of "The Alto Knights (Original Motion Picture Soundtrack)" with music by award-winning composer David Fleming (“The Last of Us Season 1,” “Mr & Mrs. Smith”). The Soundtrack is available now on all platforms.

David Fleming notes, “Barry Levinson's The Alto Knights is a true story of the end of a brotherhood and the fall of the American mafia. When Barry and I first spoke about the music, we knew it needed to have a simmering, kinetic energy to mirror the undercurrent of quiet machinations that push Frank and Vito toward sabotage and betrayal. The score uses pulsing saxophones and synthesizers juxtaposed over classic sounds of a bygone era to underpin this tectonic shift in the history of organized crime.”

“The Alto Knights” was written by Oscar nominee Nicholas Pileggi (“Goodfellas”) and produced by Oscar winner Irwin Winkler (“Rocky,” “Goodfellas”), Levinson, Jason Sosnoff, Charles Winkler and David Winkler, with Mike Drake executive producing.

"Conclave" and "Say Nothing" Top 2025 Scripter Awards

Writers of “Conclave,” “Say Nothing” Win 37th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The authors and screenwriters behind the film “Conclave” and the series “Say Nothing” won the 37th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Awards on the evening of Saturday, Feb. 22, 2025. Selection committee chair Howard Rodman announced the winners at a black-tie ceremony at USC’s Town and Gown ballroom.

“You start off with a book that you love, you read it again and again, and then you end up throwing it over your shoulder”

The Scripter Awards recognize the year’s most accomplished adaptations of the written word for the screen, including both feature-length films and episodic series.

Novelist Robert Harris and screenwriter Peter Straughan took home the award for “Conclave.”

In accepting the award, Straughan said “Adaptation is a really strange process, you’re very much the servant of two masters. In a way it’s an act of betrayal of one master for the other.” He joked that “You start off with a book that you love, you read it again and again, and then you end up throwing it over your shoulder,” crediting author Robert Harris for being “so kind, so generous, so open throughout.”

In the episodic series category, Joshua Zetumer and Patrick Radden Keefe won for the episode “The People in the Dirt” from the limited series “Say Nothing,” which Zetumer adapted from Keefe’s nonfiction book about the Troubles in Ireland.

Zetumer referenced this year’s extraordinary group of Scripter finalists, saying “Projects like these reminded me of why I wanted to become a writer when I was sitting in USC’s Leavey Library dreaming of becoming a screenwriter. If you fell in love with movies, or fell in love with TV, chances are you fell in love with something dangerous.”

Special guest for the evening, actress and producer Jennifer Beals, shared her thoughts on the impact of libraries. “If ever you are at a loss wondering if there is good in the world,” she said, “you have only to go to a library. There you will find shelf upon shelf of books where authors have poured their knowledge, their stories, their creativity on page after page...if a library is not the very best of what society has to offer, I don't know what is.”

Earlier in the evening, Howard Rodman accepted the Ex Libris Award, which honors exceptional commitment to the USC Libraries. Rodman has been the chair of the Scripter Selection Committee for the past twelve years. Presenting him with the award was celebrated novelist Walter Mosley who credited Rodman for being an influence on thousands of writers, producers, editors, directors, and “a gardener of revelation for those of us who didn’t know where we were going or even when we had arrived.”
