NEWS:

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/28 to 11/30/2025 weekend box office is Disney's "Zootopia 2" with an estimated gross of 96.8 million dollars.

MOVIES - From THR:  Scarlett Johansson will star in director Mike Flanagan's reboot or re-imagining of the 1973 film "The Exorcist" for Universal and Blumhouse.  This new film is an attempt to reviver "The Exorcist" franchise in the wake of Universal/Blumhouse's ill-fated film, "The Exorcist: Believer" (2023).

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Apparently with a push from President Trump, "Rush Hour 4" is happening.  Brett Ratner is returning to direct Jackie Chan (as Inspector Lee) and Chris Tucker (as Detective Carter) in the film.  Paramount Pictures will distribute with Warner Bros.

NETFLIX - From Deadline:  It’s been nearly two years since Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson announced he would be executive producing a documentary about imprisoned music impresario, Sean "Diddy" Combs. The project finally has a release date. The four-episode project titled "Sean Combs: The Reckoning" will drop globally on Netflix on December 2, 2025.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/21 to 11/23/2025 weekend box office is Universal Pictures' "Wicked: For Good" with an estimated total of $150 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Grammy-winning rapper, Kendrick Lamar, and "South Park" creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, are working on a live-action comedy. The movie will not meet its March 20, 2026 and is on indefinite delay. Lamar says they are working hard on the film.

OBITS:

From Variety:  The Czech-born, English playwright and screenwriter, Tom Stoppard, has died at the age of 88, November 2025.  Stoppard was nominated eight times for the "Best Play" Tony Award, and he won five times, including for "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead" (1968).  He was twice nominated for the "Best Original Screenplay" Oscar.  He won for "Shakespeare in Love" (1998) and was nominated for "Brazil" (1985).  He also received an Emmy nomination for his work on the BBC miniseries, "Parade's End" (2012-13).

From Deadline:  Former American child actor, John Eimen, has died at the age of 76, Friday, November 21, 2025.  Eimen's career ran from the late 1950s to the mid-1960s during a time fans consider the "classic TV era."  Eimen is best known for the role of "Cadet Monk Roberts" in the former NBC children's sitcom, "McKeever and Company," appearing in 11 episodes.  Eimen appearances in such classic 50s and 60s television series as "Have Gun - Will Travel," "Leave It to Beaver," "Petticoat Junction," "The Twilight Zone," and "Wagon Train," to name a few.

From Reuters:  Jamaican multi-instrumentalist, musician, singers, songwriter, and actor, Jimmy Cliff, has died at the age of 81, Monday, November 24, 2025.  Cliff was a legendary Jamaican singer who, along with Bob Marley, popularized the Jamaican music genres: reggae, ska and rocksteady music, doing so over a six decade career.  Cliff's best known songs include "You Can Get It If You Really Want" (1970), "The Harder They Come" (1972), and also for two covers songs he did: Cat Stevens' "Wild World" (1970) and Johnny Nash's "I Can See Clearly Now" (1993).  Cliff starred in the 1972 Jamaican crime film, "The Harder They Come," which helped popularize reggae worldwide through its soundtrack.  He was inducted into the "Rock and Roll Hall of Fame" in 2010.  He was a a seven-time Grammy Awards nominee and won twice.  Cliff's wife, Latifa Chambers, announced his death on Facebook on Monday.

MOVIE AWARDS 2025-26:

From AwardsWatch:  Twenty films have made crossed the first hurdle in the race for the "Best Visual Effects" Oscar.  Those films include "Avatar: Fire and Ash," "Captain America: Brave New World," "Frankenstein," and "Sinners."  In a little under two weeks, those 20 will be cut down to 10.

From AwardsWatch:  The site has a list of all 322 films eligible for Oscar consideration in the animated, documentary, and international film categories.

From THR:  The nominations for the 2026 / 38th European Film Awards have been announced.  the winners will be announced at the 38th European Film Awards ceremony, which takes place January 17, 2026.

From Deadline:  Last week (Oct. 14th), the European Film Academy shortlisted the 67 films were available to receive nominations for the 38th European Film Awards, taking place on January 17, 2026.  The shortlist included 44 feature films, 15 documentary films, and eight animated feature films.  Among the list of feature films were "Bugonia" and "Sound of Falling."  The nominations are scheduled to be announced today (Oct. 18th).

From THR:  The nominations for the 2025 / 35th Annual Gotham Films Awards have been announced.  Director Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" tops the list of nominees with a record six nominations, including "Best Feature" and "Best Director" for Anderson.  The winners will be announced December 1, 2025.

SUMMARY OF REVIEW:

-- Spiritually, “Jurassic World Rebirth” is closer to the original, 1993 “Jurassic Park” film than it is to any other “Jurassic World” film

-- Writer David Koepp humanizes the characters giving us their hopes, dreams, conflicts, and grief that helps us connect us with the characters. Director Gareth Edwards uses this to deliver an monster movie that is as dramatic as it is adventurous

-- I highly recommend this film to anyone who enjoyed any “Jurassic World” film and especially to anyone who hasn't approached this franchise since the original trilogy

Jurassic World Rebirth is a 2025 American science fiction, action-adventure, and dinosaur film from director Gareth Edwards.  It is the fourth film in the Jurassic World movie franchise and is a standalone sequel to Jurassic World Dominion (2022).  This film is also the seventh entry overall in the Jurassic Park franchise.  Rebirth focuses on a group of people stranded on a former island research facility where three types of massive dinosaurs and their monstrous mutant brethren reside.

Jurassic World Rebirth finds formerly extinct dinosaurs in trouble.  By 2025, most of Earth's climate is unsuitable for them, and most of the new dinosaurs have died.  The remaining animals survive in a tropical band around the equator that is similar to the climates in which dinosaurs lived tens of millions ago.  The governments of the world have turned these areas into “exclusion zones,” to which humans are forbidden to travel.  Thus, the “Neo-Jurassic Age” has begun.  However, there are always people who want their way...

The pharmaceutical company, ParkerGenix, wants to collect blood samples from three colossus dinosaur specimens:  the Mosasaurus, the Titanosaurus, and the Quetzalcoatlus, in order to develop a revolutionary new cardiovascular disease treatment for humans.  These animals can be found on the Atlantic Ocean island of Ile Saint Hubert, which is 260 miles from French Guiana (South America).

One of the company's executive, Martin Krebs (Rupert Friend), enlists Zora Bennett (Scarlett Johansson), former black ops who specializes in retrieval missions and “situational security and reaction.”  Zora will accompany Krebs and paleontologist, Dr. Henry Loomis (Jonathan Bailey), in order to collect the samples from the dinosaurs.  Zora recruits longtime associate, Duncan Kincaid (Mahershala Ali), to lead the expedition with the aid of a group of security experts and mercenaries.

As the mission gets underway, there is a complication.  A civilian father, Reuben Delgado (Manuel Garcia-Rulfo), is sailing in nearby waters with his daughters, Teresa (Luna Blaise) and Isabella (Audrina Miranda), and Teresa's boyfriend, Xavier Dobbs (David Iacono), whom Reuben openly disdains.  Fate will find both groups shipwrecked on an island of mutants and monsters.  First, they must survive.  Then, they must escape.

I didn't expect much from Jurassic World Rebirth, especially as it arrived only three years after the final film in the original Jurassic World film trilogy, Jurassic World Dominion.  I assumed that it would be a few more years before we'd see a new film in the series.  However, Universal Pictures and executive producer Steven Spielberg's Amblin Entertainment hired the right people.  First, this film's screenwriter is David Koepp, who co-wrote Jurassic Park (1993) with author Michael Crichton, whose 1990 book, Jurassic Park, was the basis for the film.  Koepp's screenwriting in Rebirth recalls the tone of the first Jurassic Park trilogy by focusing on the characters and delving into the underlying desires and doubt of the characters.  In the case of Rebirth, it makes it easier to embrace the characters and actually see them as people rather than as character types waiting to be dinosaur food.

Gareth Edwards is also a great choice as the director for a dinosaur movie that emphasizes the personality of the human characters.  His 2010 film, Monsters, and his 2014 film, Godzilla (the opening salvo in the Legendary Entertainment's “Monsterverse”), showed his deft touch with enticing characters and breathtaking monster movie action.  Edwards helms hot dinosaur action in the scenes involving the Mosasaurus, the Titanosaurus, and the Quetzalcoatlus, and especially so in the breathtaking scenes featuring a romantic Titanosuarus couple.  Also, race-with-the-devil scenes featuring the mutant dinosaurs froze me to my seat.

This film's cast genuinely conveys the interpersonal relationships of these characters, but Scarlett Johansson as Zora and Mahershala Ali as Duncan are the stars here.  They make a great team, so I hope to see them doing the Jurassic thing again.  I don't think that I've supported Jurassic lead actors this much since Jurassic Park, The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997), and Jurassic Park III (2001).

Jurassic World Rebirth made me appreciate what the original Jurassic Park films brought to the world of cinema more than I have in a long time.  As a standalone film, Rebirth stands on its own very strongly.  I found myself thrilled and chilled and appreciative of each character's arc (at least the ones that lived).  If Gareth Edwards and David Koepp don't return for the next film, I hope that the newcomers can capture Edwards and Koepp's lighting in a bottle that is Jurassic World Rebirth, which is a true rebirth of the best elements of this film franchise.

SPORTS - From ESPN:  The Las Vegas Aces have won the 2025 WNBA Championship, defeating the Phoenix Mercury in Game 4 (97-86) to win the series 4 games to 0.  This is the Aces third championship in four years.

AWARDS - From CBSNews:  The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize was awarded on Friday Oct. 10th to Venezuelan political opposition leader, Maria Corina Machado. The Swedish Academy said Machado received the award "for her tireless work promoting democratic rights for the people of Venezuela and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy."

DISNEY - From Deadline:  Disney has resumed developing a live-action remake of its 2010 animated hit, "Tangled."  Scarlett Johansson is in play to take the role of the villain, "Mother Gothe."

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Taron Egerton and Jessica Henwick are set to star in the comedy thriller "Everybody Wants To F*ck Me," which will be written and directed by Jonathan Schey.  The film is a Studiocanal, LuckyChap, Film4, and Parkville Pictures co-production and is set in London and the world of modern dating.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 10/3 to 10/5/2025 weekend box office is AMC Distribution's "Taylor Swift | The Official Release Party of a Showgirl" with an estimated take of 33 million dollars.

NFL SCANDAL - From NewYorkPost:  "The New York Post" has a timeline of events regarding the events surrounding the stabbing of former NFL quarterback and current Fox Sports analyst, Mark Sanchez. The article also has a picture of the alleged victim, 69-year-old Perry Tole.

From NBCSports:  Stabbed just a few nights ago, former NFL quarterback and Fox Sports analyst, Mark Sanchez, has gone from victim to facing felony charges, including one that could land him in prison for up to six years.

From TMZ:  Former collegiate (USC) and NFL quarterback, Mark Sanchez, was stabbed in Indianapolis sometime late Fri (Oct. 3rd) or early Sat. (Oct. 4th). Sanchez is currently a broadcaster for Fox Sports.

SCANDAL - From USAToday:  Grammy Award-winning recording artist and music producer and business mogul, Sean "P Diddy" Combs, has been sentenced to 50 months for his conviction in a federal sex-crimes case.  However, Combs will received credit for the time he has already spent locked up in the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn, New York.

POLITICS - From Variety:  Oscar-winner Jane Fonda has relaunched the "Committee for the First Amendment," the McCarthy-era initiative founded in the 1940s by her father, Oscar-winner Henry Fonda, to protect against attacks on free speech.  The Committee has already received the support of more than 550 A-list names, including Kerry Washington, Natalie Portman, Aaron Sorkin, Spike Lee, Viola Davis, Pedro Pascal, Ben Stiller, Whoopi Goldberg, Barbra Streisand, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Billie Eillish, to name a few.

ANIMATION - From Variety:  Disney's 20th Century has set a July 23, 2027 release date for the animated sequel film to 2007's "The Simpsons Movie."

From Variety:  American film and television actress, Diane Keaton, has died at the age of 79, October 2025.  Keaton had a long and successful career. Keaton won the "Best Actress" Oscar for her role in Woody Allen's film, "Annie Hall" (1977).  She also received "Best Actress" Oscar nomination for her roles in "Reds" (1981), "Marvin's Room" (1996), and "Something's Gotta Give" (2003).  Keaton is also best known for her roles in Francis Ford Coppola's "The Godfather" trilogy of films, "Baby Boom" (1987), "Father of the Bride" (1991), "Father of the Bride II" (1995), "The First Wives Club" (1996), and "Mad Money" (2008), to name a few.

From BBC:  The English actress and singer, Patricia Routledge, has died at the age of 96, Friday, October 3, 2025.  Routledge was best known for playing the character, "Hyacinth Bucket," on the former BBC sitcom, "Keeping Up Appearances." Hyacinth was a social-climbing snob who insisted that her married surname, "Bucket," was pronounced "Bouquet" when it really was pronounced "bucket." Hyacinth often made her put-upon husband, "Richard Bucket" (played by the late Clive Swift). In 1968, Routledge won the Tony Award for "Best Actress in a Musical" for her performance in "Darling of the Day."

From ABC:  London-born English zoologist, primatologist, and anthropologist, Jane Goodall, has died at the age of 91, Wednesday, October 1, 2025.  Goodall was only 26 years old when she first entered the Goombe Stream National Park in the East African nation of Tanzania and began her important research on chimpanzees in the wild with the park's "Kasakela chimpanzee community."  Throughout her study of the species, Goodall proved that primates display an array of similar behaviors to humans, such as the ability to develop individual personalities and make and use their own tools.  Goodall was the subject of more than 40 films, many of them documentary works.

From THR:  Italian artist and painter, Renato Casaro, has died at the age of 89, September 30, 2025.  Casaro was best known for the film posters he painted and he was one of the most influential, important, and innovative Italian film poster artists.  His best known work in American films includes painting movie posters for such films as "Flash Gordon" (1980), "Conan the Barbarian" (1981), "Dune" (1984), and "Army of Darkness" to name a few.  Casaro also painted calendars, collectibles, and book covers, and album covers.

Universal Releases First "Jurassic World Rebirth" Official Trailer

Universal Pictures has released the first trailer for its 2025 film, "Jurassic World Rebirth."  The film is due in theaters July 2, 2025.

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

SCANDAL - From Deadline:  Nicki Minaj‘s show in Manchester, England, was postponed after the singer was arrested at Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport on suspicion of carrying marijuana.  The Grammy-nominated recording artist has since been released.

CELEBRITY - From THR:  The venerable Hollywood paper profiles hot HOT actor Glen Powell and his continuing rise up the film industry superstar ladder. 

ANIME - From JapanTimes:  Four rare anime short films from Studio Ghibli will be screened at Cannes. One of them, "Mei and the Baby Cat Bus" is a 14-minutes mini-sequel to the legendary anime film, "My Neighbor Totoro" (1989), which was directed by Hayao Miyazaki, the co-founder of the studios.

CANNES - From Variety:  Netflix has bought director John Lee Hancock's drama, "Monsanto," starring Glen Powell, Anthony Mackie, and Oscar-winner, Laura Dern.

From Variety:  Director Ali Abbasi's film, "The Apprentice," a biopic of Donald Trump, has screen at Cannes.  Actor Sebastian Stan (Captain America: The Winter Soldier) plays Trump. The film has drawn attention for a controversial scenes of sex or rape - depending on point of view.

DISNEY - From EW:  "Pirates of the Caribbean" producer Jerry Bruckheimer would like to reboot the PotC franchise and also do a PotC film starring Margot Robbie.  Bruckheimer also said that he'd bring Johnny Depp back as "Captain Jack Sparrow" if it were up to him... So it's apparently not.

AI - From Variety:  "Sky," is one of the voice-enabled chatbots in OpenAI's latest release, "GPT-4o." Sky sounds like the voice Scarlett Johansson uses as the disembodied AI companion in the director Spike Jonze's 2013 film, Her.  Many people noticed, including Johansson, herself who threatened legal action.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Will Smith's action film, "Sugar Bandits" to be directed by Stefano Sollima, is set to start production in September. The film has sealed a number of international deals, including with Amazon Prime Video, ahead of that.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 5/17 to 5/19/2024 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "IF" with an estimated total of 35 million dollars.

CANNES - From Variety:  Cate Blanchett's new film, "Rumors," directed by Guy Maddin, is indeed named after Fleetwood Mac's iconic 1977 album.

MOVIES - From THR:  Sony's reboot of the 1997 horror film hit, "I Know What You Did Last Summer," is due "Summer 2025."

Review: "SING 2" is Full of Feel-Good Magic

Sing 2 is a 2021 computer-animated, jukebox musical comedy film written and directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Illumination Entertainment.  It is a sequel to the 2016 animated film, Sing.  In Sing 2, the Moon Theater crew must persuade a media mogul and a reclusive rock star to believe in their new show.

Sing 2 opens some time after the events depicted in Sing.  Buster Moon the koala (Matthew McConaughey) and the rebuilt “Moon Theater” are thriving.  His latest goal is to impress Suki (Chelsea Peretti), a talent scout from Crystal Entertainment in Redshore City, but Suki is definitely not impressed with the stars of the theater.  So Buster leads his troupe:  Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a housewife and mother of 25 piglets; Gunter (Nick Kroll), the exuberant pig performer who wants to dance as much as he wants to sing; Ash (Scarlett Johansson), the punk-rock porcupine and singer; Johnny (Taron Egerton), the teenage gorilla singer, and Meena (Tori Kelly), the shy teenage elephant singer, to their destiny in Redshore.

Once there, they infiltrate Crystal Tower Theater in order to get an audience with Jimmy Crystal (Bobby Cannavale), a white wolf and media mogul, but Crystal brushes them off.  Desperate, Buster starts making promises to Crystal.  The first is that he and his troupe can stage a massive space-themed musical, “Out of This World.”  Secondly, Buster says that he can get reclusive rock legend, Clay Calloway (Bono), to be part of his show.

The problem is that Calloway has not been seen in over fifteen years since his wife died.  Buster sends his secretary, Miss Crawly (Garth Jennings), to find him.  After Miss Crawly fails spectacularly, Buster's show is in trouble and his life is on the line with Jimmy Crystal.  Is there anyway or anyone that can save “Out of This World?”

I recently watched the original film, Sing, for the first time.  I found that all the obstacles that Buster and his troupe face in the original were all over the place and overkill, and I did not think that Matthew McConaughey's voice performance amounted to much.  McConaughey is better in Sing 2, but not great.  The conflict and obstacles that Buster and the Moon Theater troupe face are singularly focused or directly related to putting on their sci-fi show, “Out of This World.”

In Sing 2, I find the returning characters to be likable or more likable, perhaps, because I am now more familiar with then.  There are also some excellent new characters.  I hope Letitia Wright's Nooshy, a lynx and a street dancer who teaches Johnny to dance, returns if there is another film in the series.  Porsha Crystal (Halsey), Jimmy's daughter, actually grows as a character in the film.  Bobby Cannavale has a fine old time with his performance as Jimmy Crystal, and noted film director, Spike Jonze, is excellent as Jerry the cat, Jimmy's loyal and groveling assistant.  As Clay Calloway, Bono (of the legendary rock band, U2) doesn't sound like Bono, and his performance is mostly flat.

The film's big musical finale, the actual performance of “Out of This World,” is sweet and lovely, although it is a little over the top.  It is an excellent show-stopper, and serves as a nice send off for Buster Moon and his troupe – on to better things.  I hope that there is a third film in the series.  Watching the endearing Sing 2 reminded me of why I really love watching animated films, especially computer-animated films.  They are the warm cup of cocoa in my life as a movie lover.

Sing is a 2016 computer-animated, jukebox musical comedy film written and directed by Garth Jennings and produced by Illumination Entertainment.  The film focuses on a struggling theater owner who holds a singing competition to save his theater.

Sing is set in a city (Calatonia) inhabited by anthropomorphic (humanoid) animals.  The film introduces Buster Moon (Matthew McConaughey), a koala who owns the “Moon Theater.”  The theater is struggling, and Judith (Rhea Perlman), a brown llama who represents Buster's bank, is threatening the theater with foreclosure.  In a bid to get people interested in the theater, Buster decides to hold a singing competition with a prize of $1,000 going to the winner.  However, Buster's secretary, Miss Crawly (Garth Jennings), an elderly iguana, accidentally creates a typo that adds two extra zeros to the prize money.  The misprinted fliers for the competition, which declare a $100,000 prize, are also accidentally blown all over the city.

Soon, animals are lined up in front of the theater for the competition's open audition, but Buster only chooses a select few to participate in the singing competition.  There is Rosita (Reese Witherspoon), a housewife and mother of 25 piglets.  She is paired with another pig, Gunter (Nick Kroll), an exuberant performer who wants to dance as much as he sings.  Ash (Scarlett Johansson) is a punk-rock porcupine and singer who is trying to find her voice as a songwriter.

Johnny (Taron Egerton) is a singer and teenage gorilla, but he is also reluctantly part of his father, Big Daddy's (Peter Serafinowicz) gang of thieves.  Mike (Seth MacFarlane) is a white mouse who is a street musician and singer of swing music.  Meena (Tori Kelly), a teenage elephant, could be a contestant, but she has terrible stage fright.  Can Buster and his friend, Eddie Noodleman (John C. Reilly), a sheep, bring everyone together and save the theater before financial doom sinks them all?

The Hollywood film industry, sometimes called a “dream factory,” has consistently been pedaling fantasies in which plucky underdogs overcome obstacles in order to achieve something positive, which provides the audience with a happy ending.  Some films pile trials and tribulations, errors, failures, and misfortune upon the hero and supporting characters so much so that it often strains credulity.  The idea seems to be that the more the underdog has to overcome, the greater the pay off for the audience when the underdog wins in the end.

That is Sing in the proverbial movie nutshell.  I found it rather tiresome.  Poor old Buster Moon suffers so much failure, most of it brought upon him by his own actions, that it made Buster less sympathetic to me.  Buster is a plucky theater owner.  He is also such a con artist that it is hard to imagine him as much more than a loser, which is what most people would call him.  It did not help that I found Matthew McConaughey all wrong as the voice of Buster.

For me, there are a couple of things that enhance Sing.  First is Seth MacFarlane, who is best known for the Fox Network's long-running, prime time animated television sitcom, “Family Guy.”  Initially, I did not recognize his voice as Mike the white mouse, but when I did, it made sense to me.  MacFarlane is a genius at voice acting in both live-action and animated productions.  He can sing the heck out of big band and swing music standards, and as Mike, he steals most of the scenes in which the character appears.  Seth certainly makes a case for a Mike solo movie.

Second, I also initially did not realize that Scarlett Johansson was the voice of Ash, the punk-rock porcupine.  Johansson gives a voice performance full of texture, emotion, and personality, and when Ash sings, Johansson kills it.  [Johannson has released one solo album and an album recorded with Pete Yorn].  I spent most of movie wanting for her to be back on screen.  I'm one vote for an Ash movie.

Finally, the third thing that saves this film is the last 20 minutes.  Most of Sing's characters are caricatures and character types, as pleasant as they may be.  However, all the characters (except Buster) shine in the film's riveting, song-filled final 20 minutes.  This rousing songfest even offers a thrilling jail break and a crazy car chase.  I avoided Sing for years, and I am not really interested in singing competitions, in general.  I only really watched it because I am going to watch and review its recent sequel, Sing 2.  However, MacFarlane, Johansson, and the show-stopping finale made me glad I watched Sing.  I like animated movies – even the ones that are not Pixar-great.
