MOVIES - From DeadlineParamount has signed Oscar-winning filmmaker, James Mangold, to an exclusive deal in which he write and produce films for the Skydance-owned studio.

SPORTS/MUSIC - From CNN:  Benito Antonio Martinez Ocasio, the Puerta Rican rapper known as "Bad Bunny," will headline the halftime show at Super Bowl LX (NBC, Feb. 8th, 2026 at Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara, CA). Bad Bunny has won three Grammy Awards and 12 Latin Grammy Awards. He received 12 nominations at the upcoming 2025 Latin Grammy Awards.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 9/26 to 9/28/2025 weekend box office is Warner Bros Pictures' "One Battle After Another" with an estimated take of 22.4 million dollars.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineLucy Liu will star in and executive produce the new Peacock series, "Superfakes," from creator, writer, showrunner, and executive producer Alice Ju ("Poker Face," "Beef"). The crime-drama follows a small-time Chinatown luxury counterfeit dealer who enters a dangerous black-market underworld in order to fund a life of suburban respectability for her family.

JAMES BOND/AMAZON - From Deadline:  In an exclusive story, "Deadline" reported that director Denis Villeneuve will embark on the search for an unknown male British actor to play James Bond in the 26th James Bond film ("Bond 26").  He will begin the process after he completes production on "Dune: Part Three."

MOVIES - From Deadline:  According to Deadline: "After earning strong reviews for their Lionsgate thriller The Long Walk, David Jonsson and Cooper Hoffman already have found the project they want to reteam on as the two are in talks to star in A24’s The Chaperones. A24 is partnering with Plan B and Icki Eneo Arlo on the project, with India Donaldson directing. The film is written by Sebastian Black in his feature debut."

TELEVISION - From DeadlineABC announced that Jimmy Kimmel will return to host his late night talk show, "Jimmy Kimmel Live!." The network suspended him "indefinitely" over some triflin' nonsense related to the murder of anti-African American podcaster, Charlie Kirk.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 9/19 to 9/21/2025 weekend box office is Sony and Crunchyroll's "Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle" with an estimated take of 17.3 million dollars.

From Variety:  Sony and Crunchyroll's "Demon Slayer - Kimetsu no Yaiba The Movie: Infinity Castle" is now the highest grossing anime film with 555 million dollars in global box office.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Oscar-winning director-producer Christopher Nolan has been elected the president of the Directors Guild of America.  It's just in time as the next round of film and television union negotiations loom.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 6/27 to 6/29/2025 weekend box office is Warner Bros. Pictures and Apple Original Film's "F1" with an estimated 55.6 million dollars.

From Variety:  Now that Apple Original Films has a certified theatrical hit in "F1" starring Brad Pitt, will it develop more films for theatrical release.  The film was released by Apple and Warner Bros. Pictures.

JAMES BOND - From VarietyAmazon MGM Studios has revealed that Oscar-nominated director, Denis Villeneuve ("Dune") will direct the next "James Bond" film.

MOVIES - From VarietyDaisy Edgar-Jones will star in and Georgia Oakley will direct a screen adaptation of Jane Austen's 1811 novel, "Sense and Sensibility."

STREAMING - From Variety:  Paramount has renewed its hit, "Mobland," for a second season.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 6/20 to 2/22/2025 weekend box office is Universal Studios/DreamWorks Animation's "How to Train Your Dragon" with an estimated total of 37 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Oscar-winner Russell Crowe ("Gladiator") is joining Henry Cavill in the reboot of director Russell Mulchay's 1985 fantasy film, "Highlander."  Crowe will play a variation on "Juan Sanchez-Villalobos Ramirez," the mentor character that the late Sean Connery played in the original film.  The film will be directed by Chad Stahelski of "John Wick."

SPORTS/NBA - From ESPN:  The Oklahoma City Thunder have won the 2024-25 NBA World Championship.  They defeated the Indiana Pacers 103-91, winner the series 4 games to 3.  This is the Thunder's first NBA championship in their 17 year history. The franchise was formerly the "Seattle Super Sonics," which won the NBA titles in 1979.

MOVIES/AI - From Variety:  At the 27th Shanghai International Film Festival, the China Film Foundation and partners launched two major AI-driven initiatives under the Kung Fu Film Heritage Project.  One is a large-scale effort to restore 100 classic martial arts films using artificial intelligence.  The other is the unveiling of a brand-new animated feature, “A Better Tomorrow: Cyber Border,” billed as the world’s first fully AI-produced animated feature film.  These projects will involve the work and apparently the likenesses of martial arts cinema legends:  Jackie Chan, Bruce Lee, and Jet Li.

OBITS:
From Deadline:  American newspaper and television journalist, political commentary, Bill Moyers, has died at the age of 91, Thursday, June 26, 2025.  Moyers is best known for his work in public broadcasting, and he was one of the key players in creating the public broadcasting system, being influential in what would become the "Public Broadcasting Act of 1967."  In 1971, he began working for PBS and launch his first television, "The Week with Bill Moyers" (1971-73) and later, there was "Bill Moyers Journal" (1972-81). From 1982 to 2006, he produced and hosted 70 different documentary, interview, and limited series for PBS.  Moyers won five Primetime Emmy Awards and was nominated for a sixth.  He won seven "News & Documentary Emmy Awards" and was nominated for 13 more.  In 2006, he received the News & Documentary Emmy Awards' "Lifetime Achievement Award." Moyers also won a "Business and Financial Reporting Award" and was nominated for two others.

From Truthout:  Henry A. Giroux of "Truthout" memorializes his friend, the recently passed American journalist and political commentator, Bill Moyers.  No, Bill was not a stenographer.

From Deadline:  Argentine-American composer, arranger, conductor, and pianist, Lalo Schifrin, has died at the age of 93, Thursday, June 26, 2025.  Schifrin is best remembered for his large body of film and television scores.  One of his most recognized and enduring TV themes is the one for the former espionage TV series, "Mission: Impossible," which earned him one of his five Grammy Awards.  He was nominated for an Academy Awards six times, including for his film scores for such movies as "Cool Hand Luke" (1967) and "The Amityville Horror" (1979) and includes a "Best Original Song" nomination for "People Along" from the 1980 film, "The Competition." Schifrin received an Honorary Academy Award in 2018. He was nominated the Primetime Emmy Award four times, three for his work on "Mission: Impossible."

From Deadline:  American film and television actor, Rick Hurst, has died at the age of 79, Thursday, June 26, 2025.  Hurst is best known for playing "Deputy Cletus Hogg," cousin of "Boss Hogg" from 1980 to 1983 on the former CBS action-comedy series, "The Dukes of Hazzard" and in two made-for-TV reunion movies, "The Dukes of Hazzard: Reunion!" (1997) and "The Dukes of Hazzard: Hazzard in Hollywood" (2000).  He also was a series regular on two short-lived TV series, "On the Rocks" (ABC, 1975-76) and "Amanda's (ABC, 1983). His film appearances include the original "The Karate Kid" trilogy and "Steel Magnolias" (1989).

From Deadline:  American singer, television actor, and former teen idol, Bobby Sherman, has died at the age of 81, Tuesday, June 24, 2025.  One of Sherman's early TV roles was as a house singer and cast member on former ABC musical variety series, "Shindig" (1964-66).  He also made an early acting appearance on the former ABC crime drama series, "Honey West."  He eventually scored a major role on the ABC comedy Western series, "Here Comes the Brides" (1968-70).  Sherman made numerous TV guest appearances, including on such series as "The Monkees," "Mod Squad," and "Emergency," which lead to a career change for Sherman.  As a recording artist, Sherman released 107 songs, 23 singles, and 10 albums from 1962 to 1976.  His biggest hit was the million-selling "Little Woman" (1969), which was certified gold by the RIAA.  He toured the United States and the around the world and his concerts sold out to mostly screaming young female fans.  Sherman left showbusiness in the 1970s to work as a paramedic and eventually as a deputy sheriff.

From Deadline:  British musician, singer-songwriter, and recording artist, Mick Ralphs, has died at the age of 81.  He family announced his passing without providing a cause or date of his passing.  Ralphs cofounded the rock bands, "Mott the Hopple" and "Bad Company."  His notable songwriting credits include 1969's "Rock and Roll Queen" (Mott the Hoople), "Ready for Love" (Mott the Hoople), "Can't Get Enough" (Bad Company), and "Feel Like Makin' Love" (with Paul Rodgers for Bad Company), to name a few.  As a member of Bad Company, Ralphs received a "Best New Artist" Grammy Award nomination at the 17th Annual Grammy Awards (1975).

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  Multiple studios have reportedly shown interest in a reboot of "Texas Chainsaw Massacre" with rising star, Glen Powell, attached as star and JT Mollner ("Strange Darling") attached as the director.

AMAZON - From Variety:  Former head of Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal, and producer David Heyman, are being considered to run the "James Bond" franchise for Amazon MGM Studios.  Amazon is finalizing a deal to take creative control of the franchise from Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson, whose family has managed the franchise for over half a century.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  Actor Austin Abrams ("Euphoria") is in talks to star in director Zach Cregger's "Resident Evil" reboot, which will begin shooting this fall.

SCANDAL - From Deadline:  Actor Jonathan Majors, whose career took a big hit because of a domestic abuse conviction, was on "The Sherri Shepherd Show" to talk about his new film, "Magazine Dreams." Shepherd was moved to tears by Major's portrayal of the film's lead character, "Killian Maddox."

ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Last year (2024), independent production studio and film distributor, Ketchup Entertainment, obtained the North American rights to Warner Bros. Pictures' animated film, "The Day the Earth Blew Up: A Looney Tunes Movie." Now, Ketchup is negotiating an all-rights acquisition with Warner Bros. for its shelved live-action/animation hybrid film, "Coyote vs. Acme." If the deal goes through, the film will be released in 2026.

CANNES - From WorldofReel:  The 2025 / 78th Cannes Film Festival will announce its official lineup on April 10th.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  "Saw 11" has been cancelled, so the "Saw" film franchise might be dead... for the time being.

MUSIC/POLITICS - From Variety:  The rock band, "Semisonic," has objected to the Trump White House using it 1998 hit, "Closing Time," in one of its social media video clips about deportation.  Semisonic said that the clip misinterpret the song and was used without permission. "Closing Time" was written by the band's lead singer, Dan Wilson, and was nominated at the 41st Grammy Awards (1999) in the category of "Best Rock Song."

MOVIES - From Truthout:  Truthout writer, Tim Brinkhof, says that director Bong Joon-Ho's film, "Mickey 17" hold up a mirror to life under a second Trump presidential administration. Brinkhof says that the film is "both a critique of gangster capitalism and an argument in favor of proletarian revolution."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 3/14 to 3/16/2025 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "Novocaine" with an estimated take of 8.7 million dollars.

From Deadline:  "Deadline" looks at five directors who have films due in 2025 after some years of being away from the spotlight: Paul Thomas Anderson, Kathryn Bigelow, Derek Cianfrance, Paul Greengrass, and Lynne Ramsay.

STREAMING - From Deadline:  There will be a Season 4 of "Ted Lasso" at Apple TV+.

JAMES BOND - From Deadline:  Regarding the casting of the next cinematic James Bond, series producer Barbara Broccoli said the next Bond will be a man, in his 30s, and not necessarily white.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Film director and Oscar-winning film producer, Steve McQueen (12 Years a Slave), talks about his private cancer diagnosis and his "full recovery." He also speaks on his new historical epic, "Blitz."

MOVIES - From Variety:  "Stranger Things" star, Finn Wolfhard, and his partner, Billy Bryk, will re-imagine the 1999 horror movie, "Idle Hands," for Sony.  Jason Reitman, who has directed Wolfhard in two "Ghostbusters" films, will produce.

MOVIES - From THR:  "The Hollywood Reporter" is confirming that Oscar-winning actress, Lupita Nyong'o, is joining the cast of Christopher Nolan's secret 2026 film project.

AMAZON - From DeadlineAmazon is shutting down Freevee and is folding it into Prime Video.  Non-Prime members will still be able to access free streaming content.  The phase out will continue over the next couple of weeks.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineHulu offers a first-look at the sixth and final season of "The Handmaid's Tale."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/8 to 11/10/2024 weekend box office is Sony Pictures' "Venom: The Last Dance" with an estimated take of 16.225 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Sources tell "Deadline" that Oscar-winner Anne Hathaway and Emmy-winner Zendaya have been added to Oscar-winner Christopher Nolan's next film project, which is super-secret and due 2026. The film already includes Tom Holland, Matt Damon, and reportedly Lupita Nyong'o.

GODZILLA - From Variety:  Director Takashi Yamazaki will embark on another "Godzilla" film, following his 2023 Oscar-winner, "Godzilla Minus One."

MOVIE AWARDS:

From DeadlineThe 2024 / 34th Gotham Awards kick off the 2024-25 movie awards season by announcing its nominations for achievement in film.  Director Sean Baker's "Anora," which won the Palme d'Or at Cannes this year, leads with four nominations.  The winners will be announced Monday, December 2, 2024.

From Deadline:  The nominations for the 2024 British Independent Film Awards have been announced.  The Irish film, "Kneecap," leads with 14 nominations. The winners will be announced Sunday, December 8, 2024.

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

NEWS - From CNN:  ISIS has claimed responsibility for an attack at a popular concert hall complex, "Crocus City Hall," near Moscow on Friday, March 22nd, after assailants stormed the venue with guns and incendiary devices.  The death toll has risen to 115 people, with at least 145 injured.

MEDIA - From Variety:  What happens to Paramount Global if it is sold? What happens if it is sold in pieces?

MOVIES - From THR:  Recent Oscar winner, Da'Vine Joy Randolph ("The Holdovers"), is in talks to to join a musical in development at Universal from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams that has Kelvin Harrison Jr. attached to star. The untitled coming-of-age project is said to be inspired by Williams’ formative years growing up in Virginia Beach in the 1970s.

EMMYS - From Variety:  The site offers some early prediction for the 2024 / 76th Primetime Emmy Awards, which is currently scheduled for September 15, 2024.  The nominations will be announced July 17, 2024.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  Earlier this year, director Ryan Coogler (Fruitvale Station) put up for a bid a film project starring his frequent collaborator, Michael B. Jordan (Creed).  Rumors suggest the film will focus on a battle between vampires and the Ku Klux Klan of the 1960s.  The film is due in theaters March 7, 2025 from Warner Bros.

DISNEY/TRAILER - From THR:  Director Fede Alvarez says that both Ridley Scott (director of "Alien") and James Cameron (director of Aliens) have seen his upcoming franchise film, "Alien: Romulus."  There is a teaser trailer for the film, which is due in theaters August 16th.

MOVIES - From EW:  "Entertainment Weekly" has a first look at Michael Keaton and other cast members of the Beetlejuice sequel, "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice."  The article also has some quotes from director Tim Burton.

DISNEY - From Variety:  "Star Wars" mastermind, George Lucas, Disney’s largest individual shareholder, has come out with a statement supporting Disney’s board and CEO Bob Iger, urging Disney investors to reject bids by two activist investor groups to take seats on the media company’s board.

MOVIES - From FandomWire:  Rumors say that actor Aaron Taylor-Johnson has been offered the chance to be the next "James Bond."  Taylor-Johnson says "I find it charming and wonderful that people see me in that role.

MUSIC - From RollingStone:  The venerable magazine reports on "Suno," the AI music generator, a so-called ChatGPT for music.  There is also an example of what Suno can do, an unsettling Delta blues song.

MOVIES - From THR:  Director Rian Johnson (Knives Out) and his production company, T-Shirt, with partner, Ram Bergman, has signed a two-film deal with Warner Bros.

ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Emmy winners, Bill Hader and Quinta Brunson, will lead Warner Bros. Animation's "The Cat in the Hat," which is due in theaters March 26, 2026.

DISNEY - From Deadline:  Disney's recent animated film, "Wish," will debut on Disney+ April 3rd.

CANNES - From Deadline:  The site looks at the English-language films seeking to make a splash at the 2024 / 77th Cannes Film Festival.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 3/15 to 3/17/2024 weekend box office is Universal Pictures/DreamWorks Animation's "Kung Fu Panda 4" with an estimated take of 30 million dollars.

NAACP/BLM - From Deadline:  The 2024 / 55th Annual NAACP Image Awards came to a close.  Grammy-winning recording artist, Usher, won the "Entertainer of the Year."  "The Color Purple" continued with wins in the category of "Outstanding Motion Picture," "Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture" (Fantasia Barrino), "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture" (Coleman Domingo), "Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture" (Taraji P. Henson).  The film also won in five other categories.

ANIMATION - From CartoonBrew:  According to reports, DreamWorks Animation is going to let go of hundreds of its staffers, and some departments will be cut by half or more.  DreamWorks Animation COO Randy Lake won't say people are being "laid off," but this "downsizing" will occur because many staffers will not have their contracts renewed.

From Deadline:  The winners at the 2024 / 51st Annie Awards have been announced.  "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" won six, including "Best Feature."  Its predecessor, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" also won six categories, including "Best Feature."

From Variety:  The nominations for the 2024 / 77th EE BAFTA Film Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" leads with 13 nominations, and "Poor Things" follows with 11 nominations.  The winners will be announced Feb. 18th.

From THR:  The winners at the 2023 European Film Awards have been announced.  "Anatomy of a Fall" won five awards including for "Best Film," "Best Director" (Justine Triet), and "Best Actress" (Sandra Huller).

From AwardsWatch:  The 2023 National Board of Review film honors have been announced.  "Killers of the Flower Moon" won "Best Film," "Best Director" (Martin Scorsese), and "Best Actress" (Lily Gladstone).

From AwardsWatch:  The American Film Institute (AFI) names its top ten films: American Fiction, Barbie, The Holdovers, Killers of the Flower Moon, Maestro, May December, Oppenheimer, Past Lives, Poor Things, and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse.  It also names its top ten television series: Abbott Elementary, The Bear, Beef, Jury Duty, The Last of Us, The Morning Show, Only Murders in the Building, Poker Face, Reservation Dogs, and Succession.

From AwardsWatch:  "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" lead the nominations for "Astra Film & Creative Arts Awards," which are put on by the "Hollywood Creative Alliance" (formerly known as the Hollywood Critics Association).  The winners will be announced Jan. 6th, 2024 in Los Angeles.

From Deadline:  At the 2023 / 26th British Independent Film Awards, director Andrew Haigh's "All of Us Strangers" won seven awards, including "Best British Independent Film."

From Variety:  The winners at the 2023 / 89th New York Film Critics Circle Awards have been announced.  "Killers of the Flower Moon" (directed by Martin Scorsese) was named "Best Film of 2023."  Christopher Nolan won "Best Director" for his film, "Oppenheimer."

From Variety:  The winners at the 2023 / 33rd Annual Gotham Awards were announced Mon., Nov. 27th.  Writer-director Celine Song's South Korean romantic drama, "Past Lives" won the "Best Feature" award.
