Negromancer's 2025-26 Movie Awards Season News - UPDATE #13

The Hollywood movie award season begins in November/December and ends in February/March with the announcement of the Academy Awards ("the Oscars") by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS).

The 2025-2026 movie awards season began in November 2025 and will end Sunday, March 15, 2026 with the 98th Academy Awards ceremony.  This page will track the winners of various movie awards handed out by various organization, especially critics groups and Hollywood guilds, such as the Producers Guild (PGA), Directors Guild (DGA), and Screen Actors Guild (SAG).

MOVIE AWARDS 2025-26:

From AwardsWatch:  The Seattle Film Critics Society (SFCS) has announced the nominations for the 2025 SFCS Awards.  Director Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" leads with a record-tying 14 nominations.  Eventual "Best Picture" Oscar winner, "Everything Everywhere All At Once," received 14 nominations in 2022.  The winners will be announced Monday, December 15, 2025.

From Variety:  The winners of the 2025 / 91st New York Film Critics Circle Awards have been announced.  Director Paul Thomas Anderson's film, "One Battle After Another" wins "Best Film."  The awards will be handed out at a gala ceremony on January 6, 2026 at "Tao Downtown" in New York City.

From Deadline:   The winners at the 2025 / 35th Annual Gotham Awards have been announced.  Director Paul Thomas Anderson’s "One Battle After Another" won "Best Feature." Iranian filmmaker Jafar Panahi and his Palme d’Or winner, "It Was Just An Accident" were the big winners, picking up "Best International Feature," "Best Director," and  "Original Screenplay."

From AwardsWatch:  Twenty films have made crossed the first hurdle in the race for the "Best Visual Effects" Oscar.  Those films include "Avatar: Fire and Ash," "Captain America: Brave New World," "Frankenstein," and "Sinners."  In a little under two weeks, those 20 will be cut down to 10.

From THR:  The nominations for the 2026 / 38th European Film Awards have been announced.  the winners will be announced at the 38th European Film Awards ceremony, which takes place January 17, 2026.

From Deadline:  Last week (Oct. 14th), the European Film Academy shortlisted the 67 films were available to receive nominations for the 38th European Film Awards, taking place on January 17, 2026.  The shortlist included 44 feature films, 15 documentary films, and eight animated feature films.  Among the list of feature films were "Bugonia" and "Sound of Falling."  The nominations are scheduled to be announced today (Oct. 18th).

From THR:  The nominations for the 2025 / 35th Annual Gotham Films Awards have been announced.  Director Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" tops the list of nominees with a record six nominations, including "Best Feature" and "Best Director" for Anderson.  The winners will be announced December 1, 2025.

From Deadline:  American Actor, T.K. Carter, has died at the age of 69, Friday, January 9, 2026.  Carter was best known for his role in John Carpenter's "The Thing" (1982) as "Nauls" (the cook).  Carter also made his mark in roles on such television series, "Punky Brewster," "The Sinbad Show," "Good Morning, Miss Bliss," and in the HBO miniseries, "The Corner."

From Deadline:  American television director and producer, Tom Cherones, has died the age of 86, Monday, January 5, 2026 after a battle with Alzheimer's disease.  He is best known for his work on the former NBC sitcom, "Seinfeld," for which he directed 81 of the first 86 episodes of Seasons 1 to 5.  He won a "Outstand Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series" Primetime Emmy Award for directing the infamous "Seinfeld" 1992 episode, "The Contest."  He also shared another Primetime Emmy win, this time the category of "Outstanding Comedy Series" for "Seinfeld" in 1993.  Cherones received seven other nominations for his work on "Seinfeld."

SCANDAL - From Deadline:  Film and TV mogul, Tyler Perry, is facing a 77 million dollar sexual harassment lawsuit from model, Mario Rodriguez, who appeared in Perry's 2016 film, "Boo: A Madea Halloween," as "Frat Guy No. 10."  The suit also names Lionsgate, the film's distributor, as a defendant.

From Variety:  American actor, Isiah Whitlock, Jr., has died at the age of 71, Tuesday, December 30, 2025.  Whitlock was best known for the role of corrupt state senator, "Clay Davis," in HBO's former drama, "The Wire."  He also appeared in several Spike Lee films, including "25th Hour" (2002), "She Hate Me" (2004), and "Da 5 Bloods" (2020).  Whitlock was also a voice actor in Disney and Pixar productions such as "Cars 3" (2017), "Lightyear" (2022), and the upcoming "Hoppers" (2026). 

From Deadline:   American film executive and film producer, Meyer Gottlieb, has died at the age of 86, Monday, December 29, 2025.  He was a cofounder of "Samuel Goldwyn Film" with Samuel Goldwyn, Jr. in 2000.  Gottlieb was also a co-producer of the Oscar-winning film, "Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World."  Gottlieb was a Polish Holocaust survivor who live in labor camps in Ukraine during World War II.

From Deadline:  American film and television actor, Gil Gerard, has died at the age of 82, December 16, 2025.  Gerard was best known for playing the role of Captain William "Buck" Rogers in the 1979 film, "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" and the subsequent NBC spin of TV series, "Buck Rogers in the 25th Century" (1979-81).  Afterwards, Gerard worked steadily in television, appearing in such series as "Sidekicks," "E.A.R.T.H. Force," and "Days of Our Lives," to name a few.  Before playing "Buck Rogers," Gerard appeared in the NBC daytime soap opera, "The Doctors" (1973-76).

From People:  American television actor, Anthony Geary, has died at the age of 78, Sunday, December 14, 2025.  Anthony was best known for the role of "Luke Spencer" on the ABC daytime soap opera, "General Hospital."  Luke was part of the dynamic pair "Luke and Laura (Genie Francis)," whose 1981 wedding on General Hospital" was a huge pop culture event.  For the role of Luke Spencer, Geary was nominated in the Daytime Emmy Award category of "Outstand Lead Actor in Drama" 16 times and won a record eight times.

From Deadline:   American television actor and writer and film director, actor, and writer, Rob Reiner, has died at the age of 78, Sunday, December 14, 2025.  Reiner and his wife, Michele, were found stabbed to death in their home.  Reiner's best known was as the character, "Michael 'Meathead' Stivic," on the former CBS sitcom, "All in the Family" from 1971-78. He received five Primetime Emmy Awards nominations for the role, winning twice (1974, 1978).  As a film director, he is best known for such films as "This is Spinal Tap" (1984), "Stand by Me" (1986), "The Princess Bride" (1987), "When Harry Met Sally" (1989), "Misery" (1990), "A Few Good Men" (1992), "The American President" (1995), and "Ghosts of Mississippi" (1996), to name a few.  Reiner was nominated for the "Best Picture" Oscar for "A Few Good Men."  Reiner was the son of the late acting couple Estelle (Lebost) Reiner (1914-2008) and Carl Reiner (1922-2020).

AWARDS - From CBR:  The nominations for the 2026 / 83rd Golden Globes Awards have been announced.  Cynthia Erivo received a "Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy" nod for playing "Elphaba" in "Wicked: For Good," while Ariana Grande was recognized in "Best Supporting Actress" for the role of "Glinda."  Last year, both women received the nominations in the same categories for the same roles in the first film, "Wicked" (2024). This is a first in the history of the Golden Globes.

From Deadline:  American voice actor and radio personality, Jim Ward, has died at the age of 66, Wednesday, December 10, 2025.  Among his best known work was playing the voice of "Captain Qwark" in the "Ratchet and Clank" video game series.  He also voiced "Doug Dimmadome" and "Chet Ubetcha" in the long-running Nickelodeon animated series, "The Fairly OddParents."  He also played voice roles in such series as "Ben 10," "Biker Mice from Mars," and "Wolverine and the X-Men," to name a few.  In 2009, he won a Daytime Emmy Award for his work on "Biker Mice from Mars."

From TMZ:  American actor, stand-up comedian, and voice performer, Jeff Garcia, has died at the age of 48, Wednesday, December 10, 2025.  A beloved voice actor, Garcia was best known for performing the voice of the character, "Sheen Estevez," in the 2001 animated film, "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius;" and the Nickelodeon animation television spinoffs, "Jimmy Neutron: Boy Genius" (2002-06) and "Planet Sheen" (2010-13).  Garcia also played Sheen in other Nickelodeon "Jimmy Neutron" TV movies and specials.  Garcia was also a series regular on the former syndicated sitcom, "Mr. Box Office" (2012-13).

From Deadline:  Netflix is officially buying Warner Bros. Discovery for a total enterprise value of $82.7 billion.  Netflix is paying $27.75 a share for the venerable Hollywood studio, with a total equity value of $72 billion dollars. Netflix will acquire Warner Bros., including its film and television studios, HBO Max and HBO, subject to regulatory conditions – of which there will be several.  The deal will follow after WBD’s global networks division, Discovery Global, spins out into a new publicly-traded company, a move that is now expected to happen in the third quarter of 2026.

MOVIES - From THR:  Sony Pictures is developing a new film in its "Men in Black" franchise.  Chris Bremner is working on a script, but there is so far no director or cast members named.

TELEVISION - From THR:  Sky 1 and Das Erste's ground period drama, "Babylon Berlin." has wrapped up production on its fifth and final season.  The neo-noir series will close with a final 8-episode arc leading up to the Nazis seizing power in Germany in 1933.

MOVIES - From Deadline:   Universal Pictures has acquired "Portrait of God," a spec script from emerging filmmaker Dylan Clark.  The script, which is written by Clark and Joe Russo, expands on the world of Clark's viral horror short of the same name.  The film is will mark the first collaboration of producers Sam Raimi and Jordan Peele, two of the biggest names in horror, who have never before worked together.

From Deadline:  The Japanese-born American film and television actor and producer, Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa, has died at the age of 75, Thursday, December 4, 2025.  He is best known for the role of "Shang Tsung" in "Mortal Kombat" (1995).  Tagawa also appeared in such films as "The Last Emperor" (1987), "Rising Sun" (1993), "The Phantom" (1996), "Pearl Harbor" (2001), and "Memoirs of the Geisha" (2005), and "47 Ronin" (2013), to name a few.  He appeared in such TV series as "Nash Bridges" (1996-97), "The Man in the High Castle" (2015-18), and Netflix's "Lost in Space" (2018-21), to name a few.

From ESPN:  Former professional basketball player, Elden Campbell, has died at the age of 57, Tuesday, December 2, 2025.  Campbell left Clemson University as an all-time school great.  His all-time 1880 career points is still the school record.  Campbell was drafted as the 27th pick of the first round of the 1990 NBA Draft by the Los Angeles Lakers, where he spent the first nine years of his career.  Campbell won an NBA Championship as a member of the 2003-04 Detroit Pistons.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Over the course of about two hours, Michael B. Jordan relived his 25 years as an actor while accepting the 39th American Cinematheque Award, presented to him by his longtime collaborator, Ryan Coogler, on Thursday night (Nov. 20th).  “Nobody warns you how crazy this is to see your whole career flash before your eyes,” Jordan said, wiping tears away.  It had been an emotional day for Jordan, who spent the morning (Nov. 20th) saluting his friend, the late Chadwick Boseman. The “Black Panther” star, who died in 2020, received a posthumous star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame. Jordan's own "Walk of Fame" star was unveiled in 2023.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Director and Oscar-winning screenwriter, Taika Waititi, has signed a first-look deal with 20th TV, FX, and Hulu.

AMAZON - From Variety:  Amazon is officially moving forward with a new “Stargate” TV series.  The new project hails from Martin Gero, who began his career in the original “Stargate” TV franchise.  Now, Gero will act as writer, executive producer, and showrunner.  The series will be produced by Amazon MGM Studios and air on Prime Video.  Among the new series' executive producers are Dean Devlin and Roland Emmerich, who co-wrote the original film which Emmerich directed. Brad Wright and Joe Mallozzi, longtime creative leaders within the “Stargate” universe, will serve as consulting producers.

MOVIES - From MSN:  According to reports, Saudi Arabia's Sovereign Wealth Fund may be pursuing a bid to buy Warner Bros. Discovery.

From MSN:  How Warner Bros. Pictures lost the rights to the "The Matrix" and "Ocean's 11" sequels to Alcon Entertainment.

OSCARS - From Variety:   The Academy held its 16th Annual Governors Awards ceremony on Sunday, November 16, 2025. The recipients had been announced on June 17, 2025.  Receiving the "Academy Honorary Award" (recipient  receives an Oscar statuette) were Debbie Allen, Tom Cruise, and Wynn Thomas.

Debbie Allen:  Actress, dancer, and choreographer (among many things), Allen has also won five Emmy Awards and two Tony Awards.  A film director and producer, Allen has provided choreography for numerous films and television programs.

Tom Cruise:  Cruise, an actor and film producer, has previously been nominated three times for an acting Oscar and once as a film producer ("Top Gun: Maverick).  Cruise gave an emotional speech, saying, "Making films is who I am."

Wynn Thomas:  An American film production designer (scenographer), Thomas began his career on Spike Lee's "She's Gotta Have It" (1986) and collaborated with Lee on other films such as "Do The Right Thing" (1989), "Malcolm X" (1992), and "Inside Man" (2006).  Thomas has also worked on such films as "The Five Heartbeats" (1991), "Cinderella Man" (2005), and "Hidden Figures" (2016).  Thomas has to date not received a nomination for a competitive Academy Award, although he is a two-time winner of "Art Directors Guild Awards."

Dolly Parton also received the "Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award," but was unable to attend the ceremony.
