ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

DISNEY - From Deadline:  ESPN has greelit a "30 for 30" documentary about the late ESPN anchor, Stuart Scott (1965-2015).  According to "Deadline," Scott "shattered preconceived notions of how on-air figures were expected to look, talk, act, and think–and in the process, helped bring hip-hop and Black culture into the sports media mainstream."  Currently in production, the film is being directed by Andre Gaines.

CINEMACON - From THRParamount revealed footage from "Gladiator 2," the sequel to the 2000 "Best Picture" Oscar winner, "Gladiator," at CinemaCon 2024.  Reports suggest that the footage from the film, which is directed by Ridley Scott, director of the first film, left the audience very entertained.

From Deadline:  Oscar-winning director Damien Chazelle will set his next film inside a prison, according to unconfirmed reports.  The film will be part of his overall deal with Paramount.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Remember when CBS' "S.W.A.T." was cancelled and its sixth season was to be its last before it got a reprieve for a seventh season.  Well, CBS has renewed it for an eighth season.

NETFLIX - From DeadlinePrince Harry and Megan, the Duchess of Sussex are launching two non-fiction series at Netflix.  This is part of the overall deal they signed with the streamer via their Archewell Productions in 2020.

CELEBRITY - From Variety:  The Cinema for Gaza auction has received several new celebrity donations from the entertainment world, with its fundraising efforts now surpassing $200,000.  Among the new lots are a “Joker” poster signed by Joaquin Phoenix.  He also donated a poster for “You Were Never Really Here” that he signed alongside director Lynne Ramsay.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Actor Malcolm Jamal Warner will guest-star on four upcoming episodes of ABC's "9-1-1."  Warner, who is best known for his role on NBC's former sitcom, "The Cosby Show," was a series regular on Fox's drama, "The Resident."

MOVIES - From DeadlineDanny Boyle is set to direct the first film in the new "28 Years Later," the follow-up to his film, 28 Days Later, and its sequel, 28 Weeks Later, perhaps, later this year.  Sony Pictures is already lining up a director for the second film and is talks with The Marvels and Candyman (2021) director, Nia DaCosta, to direct it.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineCBS has renewed "NCIS" and "The Neighborhood" for the 2024-25 broadcast season.  For "NCIS," that will be its 22nd season.  For the sitcom, "The Neighborhood," that will be it seventh season.

From DeadlineCBS has renewed its "FBI" franchise trio for the 2024-25 broadcast television season.  "FBI: Most Wanted" will get a sixth season, and "FBI: International," will get a fourth.  The flagship, "FBI," gets three-season renewal which will over Seasons 7 through 9.

TELEVISION - From Variety:  Actor Kit Harrington, who played "Jon Snow" in HBO's "Game of Thrones," says that the Jon Snow spinoff series is no longer in development.  Harrington says the team of showrunners/writers that he brought onto the project couldn't find the right story to tell.

MOVIES - From VarietyJohn Waters is trying to get financing for his first film in 20 years, "Liarmouth."  Meanwhile, "Fruitcake," a sequel to "Hairspray" (1998), might happen.

BOX OFFICE - From Variety:  A list the 30 highest-grossing films of all time.  "Avatar" (2009) is #1 and "Skyfall" is #30.

MOVIES - From THR:  The big Hollywood studios are apparently wary of Francis Ford Coppola's self-financed epic film, "Megalopolis."  The word is that the film is too experimental and "not good," which makes the studios wary of spending 40 million prints and advertising and all marketing for domestic distribution and another 80 to 100 million for an international release.

CANNES - From Deadline:  Francis Ford Coppola's "Megalopolis" will premiere in competition at Cannes 2024 on May 17th.

ANIMATION - From IndieWireDavid Lynch says that Netflix has passed on financing his proposed animated feature film, "Snootworld."  Although Lynch will not commit to directing the film, which he co-wrote with The Nightmare Before Christmas scribe, Caroline Thompson, he would produce the film. He is currently looking for new financiers.

MOVIES - From THR:  The recent success of the hit film, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, practically ensures that Legendary Entertainment and Warner Bros' "MonsterVerse" has a bright future.

CANNES - From Variety:  The first installment of Kevin Costner's Western epic, "Horizon, an American Saga," will makes its premiere at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival.  It will be shown out of competition May 19th.  The film will be released in two installments, with the first debuting June 28th and the second arriving August 16th.

DISNEY - From Deadline20th Century Studios has closed a deal to finance and release "Deliver Me from Nowhere."  This will be a narrative film written and directed by Scott Cooper and starring Emmy-winner, Jeremy Allen White ("The Bear"), as Bruce Springsteen in a pivotal moment in his life.

SCANDAL - From Deadline:  Former Marvel Studios star, Jonathan Majors, has avoided jail time.  Over three months after being convicted of "reckless assault and harassment," Jonathan Majors was sentenced by Judge Michael Gaffey in an NYC courtroom to participate a domestic violence treatment program. The one-year “in person batterers” intervention program will be in Los Angeles, where Majors is based.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 4/5 to 4/7/2024 weekend box office is Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" with an estimated take of 31.7 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  58 years after making his debut feature ("What's Up, Tiger Lily"), Woody Allen is sitting “on the fence” about whether his latest movie, "Coup de Chance," his 50th feature, will be his last cinematic outing.  "The romance of filmmaking is gone," Allen says.

STAGE - From Deadline:  The Jamie Lloyd Company has announced that its upcoming West End production of Romeo & Juliet, headlined by Sony/Marvel "Spider-Man" star, Tom Holland, will head to Broadway after its 12-week London run.  Juliet will be played by Francesca Amewudah-Rivers, who is making her West End debut.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  In a deal worth $500,000 against $1.5 million, Legendary Entertainment has optioned Pulitzer Prize finalist Annie Jacobsen‘s nonfiction book, "Nuclear War: A Scenario."  Legendary plans to use the film adaptation potential reteam with director Denis Villeneuve, who has directed the "Dune" films for Legendary and Warner Bros.  The expectation is that Villeneuve would work on this film after he finishes his third "Dune" film, "Dune: Messiah," which would be the final part of the "Dune" trilogy.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American screenwriter and director and documentary filmmaker, Eleanor Coppola, has died at the age of 87, Friday, April 12, 2024.  Coppola is best known for her 1991 documentary film, "Hearts of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse," for which she won two Emmy Awards.  Eleanor was married to legendary film director Francis Ford Coppola from 1963 to her passing.  They had three children: the late Gian-Carlo Coppola (1963-86), and filmmakers Sofia Coppola and Roman Coppola.

From ESPN:  Former NFL player, actor, and broadcaster, O.J. Simpson, has died at the age of 76, Wednesday, April 10, 2024.  Simpson was the 1968 Heisman Trophy winner at USC, and he was a member of the 1967 USC "National Championship" team that finished No. 1 in the AP and Coaches Polls.  He was the No. 1 pick in the 1969 NFL Draft by the Buffalo Bills. When he retired in 1969, he was 2nd on the NFL's all-time rushing list.  After football, Simpson had an active two-and-a-half decade acting career, appearing in such films as "The Towering Inferno" (1974), "Capricorn One" (1978), and the "Naked Gun" film trilogy.  His television appearances included the ABC miniseries, "Roots" (1977), "Goldie and the Boxer" (1979), and "In the Heat of the Night" (1979).  After his playing career, Simpson was a "color commentator," including on ABC 's "NFL Monday Night Football" (1983-85).  However, Simpson will best be remembered for being arrested, charged, and later acquitted for the murder of his ex-wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and her... friend, Ron Goldman, on June 12, 1994.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Drew Barrymore has said that her frequent co-star, Adam Sandler, has written the screenplay for "Happy Gilmore 2," a sequel to one of his most popular films.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Actor Raymond Lee, star of NBC's "Quantum Leap," reboot announced via "Instagram" that the NBC has cancelled the series after two seasons.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Writer-producer-director-star Dev Patel talks about how important Oscar-winner Jordan Peele was in getting his debut feature, "Monkey Man," into theaters.

NETFLIX - From DeadlineNetflix has revealed the cast of "Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black."  The new 16-episode, hour-long drama series is coming to the streamer as a result of a previously announced creative partnership between Netflix and Tyler Perry.  The deal calls for Perry will write, direct, and produce feature films and series under a multi-year first-look deal.  Cast members include Taylor Polidore Williams, Amber Reign Smith, Crystle Stewart, Ricco Ross, Debbi Morgan, and Richard Lawson, to name a few.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Emmy-winning actress, Gillian Anderson, won't say "No" to appearing in Ryan Coogler's planned reboot of Fox's former sci-fi drama, "The X-Files."  Anderson played FBI Agent Dana Scully in the series, which ran from 1993 to 2002 and again from 2016-18.

DISNEY - From DeadlineBob Iger thug life is still a thing.  Disney has succeeded in barring Nelson Peltz from its board of directors as shareholders at the company’s hotly anticipated annual meeting today voted in its slate of 12 nominees, fending off outsiders. It was a months-long bitter and costly fight.  Neither Pletz nor anyone from his Trian Group or Blackwells landed anyone on the board.

MOVIES - From VarietyWarner Bros. is returning to "the Matrix" for a fourth sequel.  "Matrix 5" will be written and directed by Drew GoddardLana Wachowski, the co-creator of the franchise and the director of the fourth film, "The Matrix: Resurrections," will be an executive producer on this film.  No word yet on what actor will be returning.

STAGE - From DeadlineThe Jamie Lloyd Company announced the full cast for the upcoming West End production of Romeo & Juliet.  They confrimed that newcomer Francesca Amewudah-Rivers confirmed as Juliet opposite Tom Holland as Romeo.  "Romeo & Juliet" opens at the Duke of York’s Theatre on Thursday, May 23, 2024, with previews from Saturday, May 11, and runs until Saturday, August 3.

MUSIC/MOVIES - From TheRoot:  Inspired by Beyonce's smash hit new country album, "Cowboy Carter," "The Root" has a list of must see Black Western films.  The list includes a couple of Idris Elba films, "The Harder They Fall" and "Concrete Cowboy."

SCANDAL - From THR:  The estate of the late, legendary comedian, George Carlin, has settled a lawsuit it brought against the makers of a podcast that used generative AI to impersonate the late stand-up comic's voice and style for an unauthorized special.

TELEVISION - From VarietyChris Carter, the creator of Fox's former sci-fi drama, "The X-Files," talks about the reboot being shepherded by Ryan Coogler ("Black Panther").  Also, he mentions that original series star, Gillian Anderson ("Dana Scully") did not have enough "sex appeal" for Fox executives.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Oscar-nominee Benedict Cumberbatch and Oscar-winner Olivia Colman will star in director Jay Roach's reimagining of the 1989 film, "The War of the Roses."  The original was directed by Danny DeVito and starred Michael Douglas and Kathleen Turner.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Emmy-winner Felicity Huffman ("Desperate Housewives") joins Paramount+'s "Criminal Minds: Evolution" Season Two.

BOX OFFICE - From Variety:  The winner of the 3/29 to 3/31/2024 weekend box office is Warner Bros. and Legendary Entertainment's "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" with an estimated take of 80 million dollars.

From Variety:  "Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire" had an opening weekend of RMB317 (the equivalent of 44.6 million dollars) in mainland China, between Friday and Sunday (March 29th-31st).  Thus far, it is the biggest opening of any Hollywood film in China this year.

From Variety:  American actor, writer, and comedian, Joe Flaherty, has died at the age of 82, Monday, April 1, 2024.  A prolific actor, he was best known for his roles on the Canadian sketch comedy series, "Second City Television" ("SCTV"), and on the former NBC sitcom, "Freaks and Geeks."  As a writer, he shared nine Primetime Emmy nominations for his work on SCTV, winning twice.

From THR:  American film, television, and stage actress, Barbara Rush, has died at the age of 97, Sunday, March 31, 2024.  She appeared in over one hundred films, TV series, and TV movies.  Her best known film appearances include "It Came From Outer Space" (1953), "Magnificent Obsession" (1954), "The Young Philadelphians" (1959), and "Robin and the 7 Hoods" (1964), to name a few.  She appeared in such TV series as ABC'S "Peyton's Place" and "All My Children," NBC's "Flamingo Road," and The WB's "7th Heaven," to name a few.  In 1954, Rush won the "Golden Globe Award" for "New Star of the Year - Actress."

From THR:  American visual effects artist, Tim McGovern, has died at the age of 68, Saturday, March 30, 2024.  He won the "Special Achievement Academy Award" for his work on "Total Recall," sharing the win with Eric Brevig, Rob Bottin, and Alex Funke.  A digital effects pioneer, McGovern was also a founding member of Sony Picture ImageWorks, where he worked on such films as "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" (2015) and "Dunkirk" (2017).  His other credits include "Last Action Hero" (1993), "As Good as It Gets" (1997), and "Shazam: Fury of the Gods" (2023).

From THR:  American film and television writer and producer and TV director, Norman Steinberg, has died at the age of 83, Saturday, March 15, 2024.  Steinberg is best known for co-writing Mel Brooks' "Blazing Saddles" (1974) and Richard Benjamin's "My Favorite Year" (1982), which starred Peter O'Toole.  He won a Primetime Emmy Awards for cowriting an episode of the former NBC variety series, "The Flip Wilson Show."

TELEVISION/STREAMING - From Deadline:  Layoffs are underway at CBS Studios and at Paramount TV Studios.

AWARDS - From Deadline:  "Everything Everywhere All at Once" wins the "Best Feature" award at the 2022 / 32nd Annual Gotham Awards, one of two wins for the film.

From IndieWire:  The nominations for the 2023 Film Independent Spirit Awards have been announced.   "Everything Everywhere All at Once" leads with eight nominations.  The winners will be announced March 4th, 2023.

From Variety:  The nominations for the 2022 / 32nd Annual Gotham Awards were announced a month ago.  Todd Field's "Tar" leads with five nominations.  The winners will be announced Monday, November 28th.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/25 to 11/27/2022 Thanksgiving weekend box office is Disney/Marvel Studios' "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" with an estimated take of 45.9 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Antonio Banderas, who has played the character, "Zorro," in two films, says that if there is a reboot he would like to see "Spider-Man" actor, Tom Holland, take the role.

SPORTS - From Deadline: Thursday's (11/24/2022) Thanksgiving Day game between the New York Giants and Dallas Cowboys, who won 28-20, is the most watched regular season NFL game ever.  42 million viewers apparently tuned into the game broadcast on FOX.

HISTORY - From Deadline:  Friday, November 25, 2022 marked the 75th anniversary of the birth of the "Hollywood Blacklist," which began with the "Waldorf Declaration" on November 25, 1947.

MOVIES - From VarietyIce Cube lost a $9 million dollar payday because he didn't want to get the required COVID vaccination for the film, "Oh Hell No."

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Director James Mangold says that actor Harrison Ford was "de-aged" for "Indiana Jones 5" so that he could look like he did in the first three films from the 1980s.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From VarietyQuentin Tarantino says that actors in Marvel Studios are not movie stars and that, for instance, Captain America is the star.

DISNEY - From VarietyBob Chapek is out as CEO of The Walt Disney Company.  After three years of retirement, Bob Iger, has been reinstated as CEO of Disney.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/18 to 11/20/2022 weekend box office is Disney/Marvel Studios' "Black Panther: Wakanda Forever" with an estimated take of 67.3 million dollars.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Actor John Leguizamo said that he based his character, "George Diaz," from the new film, "The Menu," on action movie star Steven Seagal, says "He's kind of a horrible human."

WALKING DEAD - From Deadline:  The lawsuit over profits from "The Walking Dead" television series that pit the series' network, AMC, against the series' original showrunner, Frank Darabont, and his talent agency, CAA, has come to an end. According to Deadline: “The Settlement Agreement provides for a cash payment of $200 million (the “Settlement Payment”) to the plaintiffs and future revenue sharing related to certain future streaming exhibition of The Walking Dead and Fear The Walking Dead...”

RUST - From Deadline:  The police report produced by the Sante Fe County Sheriff's Office on its investigation into the shooting on the New Mexico set of the Western, "Rust," has been made public.  Cinematographer Halyna Hutchins was killed after being shot by an accidental discharge from a pistol held by actor Alec Baldwin.

OBITS:

From Variety:  English musician and singer-songwriter, Christine McVie, has died at the age of 79, Wednesday, November 30, 2022.  She was best known for her association with the British-American rock band, Fleetwood Mac, and was a member during the band's greatest success and greatest sales.  As a member of the band, she shared the 1978 Grammy Award for "Album of the Year" for the album, "Rumors" (1977).  McVie also released four solo albums.

From Deadline:  Film and television actor and theater professor, Clarence Gilyard, Jr., has died at the age of 66, Monday, November 28, 2022.  Gilyard was best known for playing the role of "Conrad McMasters" on NBC's former mystery legal drama, "Matlock" (1989-93) and for the role of "Ranger James Trivette" on CBS' former action-crime drama, "Walker, Texas Ranger" (1993-2001).  His best known film roles were playing Tom Cruise's co-pilot in "Top Gun" (1986) and playing "Theo" a terrorist computer expert in "Die Hard" (1988).

From THR:  Hawaiian-born, American film director, Albert Pyun, has died at the age of 69, Saturday, November 26, 2022.  He was known for directing, low-budget, high-concept films that became cult classics, such as the sword and sorcery film, "The Sword and the Sorcerer" (1982).  His best known film may be the 1989 Jean-Claude van Damme martial arts/sci-fi film, "Cyborg."  He is also known for directing the low-budget 1990 film, "Captain America," based on the Marvel Comics character.

From Variety:  Actress, singer, and songwriter, Irene Cara, has died at the age of 63, Friday, November 25, 2022.  Cara appeared in the 1980 film, "Fame," and sang the title song, "Fame," which won the "Best Song" Oscar for its songwriters.  Later, Cara would win an Oscar for co-writing the song, "Flashdance... What a Feeling" from the film, "Flashdance" (1983).  She also won two Grammys for her work on "Flashdance... What a Feeling."

From Deadline:  Former child actor, Mickey Kuhn, has died at the age of 90, Sunday, November 20, 2022.  Kuhn was the last surviving credited-cast member of  the legendary film, "Gone with the Wind."  Kuhn worked in the film industry from 1934 to 1956 before leaving for good.

From Deadline:    The actor Jason David Frank has died at the age of 49, Saturday, November 19, 2022.  Frank was best known for playing the role of Tommy Oliver" the "Green Ranger"/"White Ranger" on the the TV series, "Mighty Morphin Power Rangers" (1993-96).  He also appeared in several other TV series in the "Power Rangers" franchise.

From NBCNews:   Brittney Griner will enter a system of isolation, grueling labor and psychological torment when she is transferred to a penal colony, the successor to the infamous Russian gulag, to fulfill a nine-year sentence handed down Tuesday in Moscow, former prisoners and advocates said.

From NBCNews:  A Russian court has rejected Brittney Griner's appeal of her nine-year prison sentence on (fake) drug charges.

From Reuters:  Russia says that it is ready to talk prisoner swamp for Brittney Griner and U.S. Marine veteran Paul Whelan, but also scolds the U.S. Embassy.

From TheDailyBeast:   Legendary NBA bad boy and champion (Detroit Pistons, Chicago Bulls), Dennis Rodman claims that he has been given permission to go to Russia and help free imprisoned hostage, WNBA star, Brittney Griner.

From Vox:  Vox's Jonathan Guyer talks the Brittney Griner case with Danielle Gilbert, a Dartmouth professor who is writing a book about states and rogue actors that take hostages.

From ESPN:   A Russian court sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison Thursday, Aug. 4th.  Griner was arrested Feb. 17 for bringing cannabis into the country and pleaded guilty July 7, though the case continued under Russian law.

From ESPN:  The Biden administration has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday.

AWARDS - From Deadline:   The winners at the 2022 / 28th annual SAG Awards. "CODA" wins the top prize, "Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:   The winner of the 2/25 to 2/27/2022 weekend box office is Sony Pictures' "Uncharted" with an estimated take of $23.25 million.

NAACP - From Variety:  Here is a complete list of winners at 2022 / 53rd NAACP Image Awards in the film, television and music categories.  Jennifer Hudson was named "Entertainer of the Year."

TELEVISION - From DeadlineQuentin Tarantino is in early talks to direct one or two episodes of "Justified: City Primeval," the FX limited series that brings Timothy Olyphant as U.S. Marshal Raylan Givens from FX's long-running series, "Justified" (2010-15).

MOVIES/NETFLIX - From BETTyler Perry talks to BET about his new Madea movie, "A Madea Homecoming," which is streaming on Netflix.

MOVIES - From DeadlineSteven Spielberg is attached to direct a new original story based on "Lt. Frank Bullitt," the character the late Steve McQueen played in the 1968 film, "Bullitt."

AWARDS - From Deadline:  "Lost Illusions" and "Annette" top the 2022 Cesar Awards in France.

DISNEY - From Deadline:  Disney has set the release date for its film, "Haunted Mansion," for March 10, 2023.  Justin Simien is directing stars Tiffany Haddish, Owen Wilson, Rosario Dawson, Danny DeVito, and LaKeith Stanfield.

From Variety:   Film and television actress, Sally Kellerman, has died at the age of 84, Thursday, Feruary 24, 2022.  Kellerman was nominated for a "Best Supporting Actress" Oscar for her role as "Margaret 'Hot Lips' Houlihan" in director Robert Altman's 1970 film, "MASH."  From 2014 to 2015, she had a recurring guest role on the CBS soap opera, "The Young and the Restless," which earned her a 2015 Daytime Emmy Award nomination.

From Deadline:  American singer-songwriter and rock musician, Mark Lanegan, has died at the age of 57, Tuesday, February 22, 2022.  He was one of the leading figures in the development of "grunge music" as the vocalist for the band, "Screaming Tress," and recorded seven albums with them.  He also released 12 solo studio albums.  He was also a member of the rock band, "Queens of the Stone Age."

From Deadline:  British music entrepreneur and YouTube star, Jamal Edwards, has died at the age of 31, Sunday, February 20, 2022.  He was known for founding "SBTV," a YouTube music channel dedicated to breaking emerging music acts in the United Kingdom.  Edwards helped launch the careers of artists such as Ed Sheeran and Jessie J, to name a few.  Edwards and SBTV are also credited with helping to popularize "grime music" in the UK and beyond.

From Deadline:   American film editor, David Brenner, has died at the age of 59, February 17, 2022.  Brenner was known for editing blockbuster films of noted directors like Roland Emmerich, Oliver Stone, and Zach Snyder, to name a few.  He won an Oscar with Joe Hutshing for editing Stone's 1989 film, "Born on the Forth of July."  Brenner was the editor on the "Avatar" sequels.

OSCARS - From Variety:  The nominations for the 2022 / 94th Academy Awards have been announced.  "The Power of the Dog" leads with 12 nominations.  The winners will be revealed March 27th.

From Deadline:    With his "Best Actor" nomination for "The Tragedy of Macbeth," Denzel Washington is the most nominated Black actor is Oscar history.  He has been nominated in two acting categories a total of 10 times with two wins total.

From Variety:   With her "Best Director" Oscar nomination for "The Power of the Dog," Jane Campion becomes the first woman nominated twice in that category. She was previously nominated in that category for "The Piano" (1993).

From Variety:  With his three nominations today, Kenneth Branagh of "Belfast" becomes the first person to have been nominated in seven individual categories over his career.
