ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The latest "Game of Thrones" spinoff, "A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms: A Hedge Knight" is currently in pre-production and will debut in late 2025.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Warner Bros. has signed Tom Cruise and Margot Kidder to be big production deals.  It has spent $200 million on its "Joker" sequel.  It's all to make Warner Bros. attractive to a buyer or merger partner beginning in April.

MOVIES/TRAILERS - From DeadlineLionsgate has released the first trailer for its star-studded film adaptation of the videogame, "Borderlands."  Directed by Eli Roth, the film stars Cate Blanchett who leads a cast including Kevin Hart and Jamie Lee Curtis, to name a few.  It is due in theaters August 9, 2024.

MUSIC - From DeadlineBeyonce has become the first Black woman to reach No. 1 on Billboard's "Hot Country Songs" chart.  Her song, "Texas Hold 'Em," released February 11, 2024, debuted at the top of the "Hot Country Songs" list.

MOVIES - From DeadlineGareth Edwards is in final negotiations to direct the fourth "Jurassic World" movie.  This comes after news that talks with the first choice, "John Wick" director David Leitch, fell through.  Edwards is best known for directing Godzilla (2014) and Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, and recently directing "The Creator."  The new Jurassic World movie is due in theaters July 2, 2025.

MOVIES/BOOKS - From Deadline:  Stephen Kings calls out Warner Bros. on Twitter for holding back on the released date of "Salem's Lot," its film adaptation of King's 1975 classic horror novel. The film has been having release date changes since September 2022.

MOVIES/MUSIC - From Deadline:  Oscar-winning director, Sam Mendes ("American Beauty") will direct four separate films about "The Beatles."  Each film will focus on one of four members of "the Fab Four": John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr.

AMAZON - From DeadlineJonathan van Tulleken will direct and executive produce the first two episodes of the high-profile limited series, Amazon Prime Video‘s "Blade Runner 2099."  Van Tulleken also directed the first two episodes of FX's upcoming "Shogun."

BAFTAS - From Deadline:  The winners at the 2024 / 77th BAFTA Film Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" wins seven awards, including "Best Film," "Best Director" (Christopher Nolan), and "Best Actor" (Cillian Murphy).

AWARDS - From People:  "Barbie" dominates at the 2024 People's Choice Awards, winning six awards. Also, this article has a complete winners list.

MOVIES - From DeadlineSony Pictures has bought the international film distribution rights for "Materialists," the next film from Celine Song, whose recent "Past Lives" has won several awards and is currently Oscar-nominated.  A24 will handle the U.S. release.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 2/16 to 2/18/2024 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "Bob Marley: One Love" with an estimated take of 27.7 million dollars.

MOVIES - From DeadlineRidley Scott will direct Paramount Pictures' biopic about the Grammy-winning, hit-making pop music group, the "Bee Gees" (brothers Barry, Maurice, and Robin Gibb).

OBITS:

From Deadline:   Film, television, and stage actor, Paul D'Amato, has died at the age of 75, Monday, February 19, 2024.  D'Amato is best known for the role of "Tim 'Dr. Hook' McMcCraken" in the 1977 sports movie classic, "Slap Shot."  He also appeared in such films as "The Deer Hunter" (1978) and "Suspect" (1987).

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, Tony Ganios, has died at the age of 64, Sunday, February 18, 2024.  Ganios may be best known for two roles, his debut role as "Paul LaGuardia" in "The Wanderers" (1979) and as "Anthony 'Meat' Tuperello" in the hit 1981 sex comedy, Porky's, and its two sequels.  He also had a recurring role in the former CBS crime drama, "Wiseguy."

From THR:  Key award season dates leading up to the 2024 / 96th Academy Awards, which are Sunday, March 10th, 2024.

From Variety: The nominations for the 2024 / 96th Academy Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" leads with 13 nominations, and "Poor Things" follows with 11.  The winners will be announced Sun., March 10th, 2024.

From THR:   The Directors Guild of America has announced the winners at the 2024 / 76th DGA AwardsChristopher Nolan won the top category, "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film of 2023," for his work on his blockbuster film, "Oppenheimer."

From Deadline:  The winners at the 2024 / 51st Annie Awards have been announced.  "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" won six, including "Best Feature."  Its predecessor, "Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse" also won six categories, including "Best Feature."

From AwardsWatch:  The NAACP has announced the nominees for the 2024 / 55th NAACP Image Awards.  By visiting www.naacpimageawards.net, the public can vote to determine the winners of the 55th NAACP Image Awards’ in select categories. Voting closes February 24th at 9:00 p.m. NAACP will also recognize winners in non–televised Image Awards categories March 11–14th, which will stream via naacpimageawards.net.  The winners will be revealed during the two–hour LIVE TV special, airing Saturday, March 16, 2024 at 8:00 PM ET/ PT on BET and CBS.

From THR:  The Art Directors Guild (IATSE Local 800) has announced the winners at the 28th Art Directors Guild Awards.  "Poor Things," "Oppenheimer," and "Saltburn" win top prizes.

From Deadline:  The nominations for the 2024 Writers Guild Awards have been announced. The winners will be announced on April 14th, more than a month after the Oscars.

From Variety:  The nominations for the 2024 / 77th EE BAFTA Film Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" leads with 13 nominations, and "Poor Things" follows with 11 nominations.  The winners will be announced Feb. 18th.

From Variety:  The Producers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2024 / 35th annual Producers Guild Awards.  For the first time in the history of the awards, two international films, "Anatomy of a Fall" and "The Zone of Interest," have made been nominated in the PGA's top category, "Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures." The winners will be announced Feb. 25th.

From Variety:   The nominees for the 2024 / 51st Annie Awards have been announced.  Netflix's "Nimona" leads the features categories with nine nominations.  The winners will be announced Sat., Feb. 17th.

From Deadline:  The Screen Actors Guild nominations for the 2024 / 30th annual SAG Awards have announced. "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" leads the film side of things with four nominations apiece.  The winners will be announced Saturday, Feb. 24th.

From AwardsWatch:  The Latino Entertainment Journalists Association has announced the 6th Annual LEJA Awards.  "Past Lives" won "Best Picture."  Actor Coleman Domingo won "Best Actor" for his role in "Rustin" and "Best Supporting Actor" for his role in "The Color Purple."

From AwardsWatch:  The Vancouver Film Critics Circle has announced its 2023 film awards.  "Anatomy of a Fall" won "Best Picture."

ENTERTAINMENT AND CULTURE NEWS:

MOVIES - From Variety:  Director Denis Villeneuve says that there are "words on paper" for a Dune Part Three.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  The site has a first-look at "Hurricanna," a biopic about the late TV personality, model, "Playboy Magazine" centerfold, and actress, Anna Nicole Smith.  The project is currently filming.

From Deadline:  A heist moving starring Ryan Reynolds is a hot pitch.  There reportedly seven "big bids" for what is being described as a high-concept ensemble action comedy.

STREAMING - From Deadline:  The third season of Max's "And Just Like That" (a follow-up to "Sex in the City") will arrive in 2025.

MUSIC - From Time:  Grammy Award-winning recording artist, Taylor Swift, has been named "Time" magazine's "Person of the Year" for 2023.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  The Eddie Murphy Christmas-themed holiday movie, Candy Cane Lane, is is the number one film globally on Prime Video.  It is also Amazon MGM Studios is the most watched film.  "Candy Cane Lane" debuted Dec. 1st.

From DeadlinePrime Video has lined up an all-star guest cast for its eight-episode series, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," starring Donald Glover and Maya Erskine and based on the 2005 Brad Pitt-Angelina Jolie action comedy, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.  Newly announced guests include Sarah Paulson, Ron Perlman, and Alexander Skarsgard, to name a few.

CELEBRITY - From THR:  Oscar-winner Jamie Foxx makes his first public appearance since his "medical event" back in April (2023). Foxx attended Critics Choice Association's "Celebration of Cinema and Television: Honoring Black, Latino and AAPI Achievements" where he received the "Vanguard Award" for his performance in director Maggie Betts' 2023 legal drama, "The Burial."

MOVIES - From Showbiz411:  The recent Barbie, Margot Robbie, and Ken, Ryan Gosling, will reunite for an "Ocean's 11" prequel.  Robbie and Gosling will play the parents of Danny Ocean of the George Clooney trilogy: Ocean's 11, 12, and 13.  They will also be the parents of Debbie Ocean of "Ocean's 8," of which I am not that familiar, so Debbie is apparently Danny's sister.

DISNEY - From DeadlineRyan Murphy will reunite with one of his "American Horror Story: Delicate" stars, Kim Kardashian, for a "high-end, glossy and sexy adult procedural" set in Los Angeles. The series is bound for Hulu.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 12/1 to 12/3/2023 weekend box office is AMC Theatres Distribution/Variance' "Renaissance: A Film by Beyonce" with an estimated take of 21 million dollars.

From Variety:  With its gross now north of 14.36 million dollars, "Godzilla Minus One" is now the highest-grossing live-action movie in North America.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineHBO Films has optioned the rights to Mark Chiusano’s new book, "The Fabulist: The Lying, Hustling, Grifting, Stealing, and Very American Legend of George Santos" (which was published on November 28, 2023), as part of its plan to develop a film about disgraced former U.S. Congressman, George Santos.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Amazon has renewed "Jack Reacher" for a third season, although Season 2 doesn't make its debut until Dec. 15th.

TELEVISION - From DeadlineHBO has released the first teaser trailer for "House of the Dragon" Season 2, along with some information on new cast members and plenty of first-look images from the upcoming season.  The new season is set for Summer 2024.

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, Ryan O'Neal, has died at the age of 82, Friday, December 8, 2023.  He received a "Best Actor" Oscar nomination for his role in the 1970 romance, "Love Story."  His other most famous films include "What's Up, Doc" (1970), "Paper Moon" (1973), "Barry Lyndon" (1975), and "The Main Event" (1979), to name a few. Before he took up acting, O'Neal was an amateur boxer.

From Deadline:  Television writer and producer, Norman Lear, has died at the age of 101, Tuesday, December 5, 2023.  TV pioneer, icon, and legend, Lear produced, wrote, created, or developed over 100 TV shows.  His best known TV work occurred in the 1970s and include "All in the Family" (1971-79), "Maude" (1972-78), "Sanford and Son" (1972-77), "The Jeffersons" (1975-85), and "Good Times" (1974-79), to name a few.  He was nominated for 18 Primetime Emmy Awards and won six, including the three he won for "All in the Family" as "Outstanding Series - Comedy."  Lear was also known for his political activism and support of liberal causes and politicians and for founding the advocacy organization, "People for the American Way."

From Deadline:  English rock musician, guitarist, and songwriter, Denny Laine, has died at the age of 79, Tuesday, December 5, 2023.  Laine was a rounding member of the English rock band, "The Moody Blues," with who he performed from 1964 to 1966. In 1971, he joined Paul McCartney and Linda McCartney to form "Wings" (also known as "Paul McCartney and Wings"). He remained with the band until it disbanded in 1981.  He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame - Class of 2018 - as a member of The Moody Blues.  Laine received four Grammy Award nominations as a member of Wings and won two of them.

DISNEY - From Variety:  This year is the 30th anniversary of the release of the Disney film, "Cool Runnings," a Disneyfied account of a real event in Jamaican Olympic history. Apparently, the director, Jon Turteltaub (The Meg) and the cast, tussled with Disney over the cast's Jamaican accents.

STREAMING - From Deadline:  Hulu has renewed its popular series, "Only Murders in the Building," its most watched original comedy series ever.

MOVIES - From DeadlineLionsgate's Michael Jackson biopic, entitled "Michael," will have Universal Pictures International as its distributor to the international film market.

TELEVISION/NFL - From Deadline:  Just the presence of Taylor Swift attending made the Chiefs at Jets Sunday Night Football game (Sun., Oct. 1st) the highest rated NFL games since Super Bowl LVII in February.

AI - From Deadline:  Zelda Williams, the daughter of the late legend Robin Williams, says that she is disturbed by a use of AI to recreate his voice.

POLITICS - From SheKnows:  Author Michael Lewis was on "60 Minutes" (Sun., Oct. 1st) promoting his new book, "Going Infinite: The Rise and Fall of a New Tycoon," which is about disgraced FTX founder, Sam Bankman-Fried. In the book Bankman-Fried says that Donald Trump told him that he wanted 5 BILLION DOLLARS to sit out the 2024 presidential race. Lewis wrote the book that was the basis for the 2009 Sandra Bullock film, The Blind Side.

BUSINESS - From Deadline:  Miramax CEO Bill Block is leaving the company as soon as today, Tues., Oct. 3rd.  Block is credited with reviving the company since his became CEO in 2017.

MOVIES - From EW:  Action director John Woo (Paycheck) talks about making the essentially dialogue-free revenge thriller, "Silent Night," starring Joel Kinnaman.  The film is due Dec. 1st.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 9/29 to 10/1/2023 weekend box office is Paramount's "Paw Patrol: The Mighty Movie" with an estimated take of 23 million dollars.

TELEVISION - From THR:  Director Albert Hughes says that his John Wick prequel series, "The Continental" (Peacock), was locked in before they knew the how John Wick 4 would conclude.

MOVIES/MUSIC - From Variety:  A film based on Beyonce‘s smash hit "Renaissance World Tour" is in advanced talks to distribute directly to AMC Theatres, sources with knowledge of the project told Variety.

DISNEY - From Deadline:   Media entrepreneur Byron Allen talks about his 10 billion dollar offer for ABC and other Disney networks.  Allen said that "capital’s not an issue,” but that Disney CEO Bob Iger “is not ready” yet to pursue linear sale.

OBITS:

From ESPN:  The former American football player, sportscaster, actor, and philanthropist, Dick Butkus, has died at the age of 80, Thursday, October 5, 2023.  Butkus was best known for his legendary career as a middle linebacker for the NFL's Chicago Bears from 1965-73.  Butkus was one of the "Monsters of the Midway," and was an eight-time "Pro Bowl" selection and was twice voted "NFL Defensive Player of the Year."  He was selected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1979.  Butkus has an extensive acting career, appearing in a number of films ("The Longest Yard," "Any Given Sunday) and television series ("My Two Dads," "Hang Time").

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, Keith Jefferson, has died at the age of 53, Thursday, October 5, 2023.  Jefferson has announced his cancer diagnosis on August 9th.  Jefferson had appeared in three of director Quentin Tarantino's films:  Django Unchained, The Hateful Eight, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.  He was set to appear in "The Burial," an Amazon Prime film starring his longtime friend, Jamie Foxx, who announced Jefferson's passing.

WRITERS/ACTORS STRIKE:

From Deadline:  The Screen Actors Guild (SAG) and the Hollywood studios CEOs met for strike talks for the first time since the actors went on strike July 14th. They plan to meet again, Wed., Oct. 4th.

BREAKING - From Deadline:  The Writers Guild of America (WGA) has reached a tentative agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) to end its strike after nearly five months. The parties finalized the framework of the deal Sunday when they were able to untangle their stalemate over AI and writing room staffing levels.

From Deadline:  Television writers rooms are opening again in the wake of the end of the writers strike.  On Monday, such series as "Grey's Anatomy," "9-1-1," and "Family Guy," to name a few, go back to work.

From Variety:  The Writers Guild (WGA) and AMPTP to meet today (Sun., Sept. 24th) after the studios supposedly make their "best and final" offer to the writers.

From Deadline:  A meeting between leading television showrunners, including Kenya Barris and Noah Hawley, and WGA leadership has been cancelled.

From Deadline:   The actors’ strike is now in its 63rd day.  Now, SAG-AFTRA leaders are ramping up their rhetoric against the studio heads, accusing them in the latest issue of the "SAG-AFTRA Magazine" of “behaving like petty tyrants,” “would-be feudal lords” and “land barons in feudal times.”

From Deadline:  Sony Pictures Entertainment CEO Tony Vinciquerra says that Hollywood unions need to embrace AI.

From Deadline:  The AMPTP says that the Writers Guild's claims that their is division in the ranks of the studios about the strike are false.

From Deadline:  The WGA (Writers Guild of America) told its members Friday (Sept. 8th) that despite the united front the streamers and studios (via the AMPTP) have shown in public during the guild’s 130-day strike, several of the legacy companies privately have expressed “both the desire and willingness to negotiate an agreement that adequately addresses writers’ issues.”

From Deadline:  Warner Bros. Discovery boss David Zaslav says the industry must focus and fight to resolve the writers and actors strikes.

From Deadline:  The writers of MTV’s "Ridiculousness" are coming closer to being unionized. The show’s writing team, which was behind over 230 episodes last year, has been going through the process to unionize over the last few months, hoping to join the WGA.

From THR:  As talks with the Writers Guild of America stall, the studio trade association, AMPTP, has retained D.C.-based firm, The Levinson Group, to pursue a fresh messaging strategy.

From Deadline:  Regarding the Hollywood writers strike, the AMPTP (representing the studios) released the details of a proposed labor agreement that it made to the WGA (the Writers Guild) on August 11th.

From Deadline:  A pair of former production assistants-turned-assistant directors have created a nonprofit in hopes of providing financial aid to PAs (production assistants) who’ve been put out of work due to the strike.

From Deadline:  Writers Guild (WGA) and the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers (AMPTP) will resume strike talks today, Fri., Aug. 11th.

From Deadline:  Meeting for the first time in more than three months, the Writers Guild and the AMPTP on Friday failed to reach an agreement to resume contract negotiations. The Writers Strike will go on indefinitely.

From Deadline:  Hollywood’s superstars are answering the call from the SAG-AFTRA Foundation, donating $1 million or more each to help their fellow performers during the ongoing actors and writers strikes.  Among the big donors are Leonardo DiCaprioMeryl StreepOprah Winfrey, and Ryan Reynolds and Blake Lively.

From Deadline:  Author George R.R. Martin, whose works were the basis for HBO's "Game of Thrones," says the strikes will be long and bitter.

From THR:  Production works at Warner Bros. Animation (66) and at Cartoon Network (22) have gone public with their attempt to unionize via The Animation Guild.

From Variety:  Halted film productions due to the writers and actors strikes are costing each Hollywood studio at least 600,000 dollars per week.

From Variety:  Said at a strike meeting: “Without a transformative change in SAG-AFTRA’s current contract with the AMPTP, the acting profession will no longer be an option for future generations of performers, and actors already working in the industry will need to pursue other careers in order to survive.”

From Deadline:  If you are a "social media influencer" who is NOT  a member of SAG-AFTRA, you can be barred from future membership for promoting a film or television series during the actors' strike.

From Variety:  The SAG/AFTRA strike begins in New York and Los Angeles.  Hollywood actors began striking today, Fri., July 14th.

From THR:  TV super-producer, Ryan Murphy, in a letter from his attorney to the leadership of the Writers Guild of America, threatened litigation against Warren Leight, an East Coast strike captain and Strike Rules Compliance Committee member who has subsequently forfeited those positions.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Tyler Perry has announced the second film of the four-picture deal he signed with Amazon back in November 2022.  Perry will write, produce, and direct "Divorce in the Black."  Among its stars are Meagon Goode, Debbie Morgan, and Perry himself, to name a few.

MARVEL STUDIOS - From Deadline:  Marvel Studios' star, Anthony Mackie (Falcon, Captain America) speaks out in support of his fellow Marvel star, Jonathan Majors (Kang the Conqueror), who has recently faced multiple accusations of violence against women.

NETFLIX - From DeadlineNetflix has signed a five-year deal with Japanese screenwriter Yuki Sakamoto.  He won the screenplay award at this year's Cannes Film Festival for the film, "Monster."

DISNEY - From THREvan Peters, hot off "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story," will reportedly play the villain next to Jared Leto's hero in "Tron 3."  Joachim Ronning is scheduled to direct the film that hopes to begin filming in August.

DC STUDIOS - From Variety:  Actor David Corenswet will play Superman/Clark Kent and Rachel Brosnahan will play Lois Lane in 2025's "Superman: Legacy."

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  MSNBC has renewed John Leguizamo's travelogue-style show, "Leguizamo Does America," for a second season.

ACADEMY AWARDS - From THR:  Actress Angela Bassett, writer-director-actor-songwriter Mel Brooks and film editor Carol Littleton have been tapped to receive honorary Oscars, while former Sundance Institute chief Michelle Satter will receive the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award at the 2023 Governors Awards, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences announced Monday, June 26th.  The 14th annual honors will be presented at a ceremony at the Fairmont Century Plaza in Los Angeles on Nov. 18th.

MUSIC - From Variety:  The winners at the 2023 BET Awards were announced.  There was a tie for "Album of the Year," Beyonce for "Renaissance" and SZA for "SOS."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 6/23 to 6/25/2023 weekend box office is Sony Pictures' "Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse" with an estimated take of 19.3 million dollars.

From Variety:  "The Flash" experiences a 73 percent drop from its debut weekend (when it was #1) to its second weekend (where it finished at #3).

From Variety:  Film director and actor, Alan Arkin, has died at the age of 89, Thursday, June 29, 2023.  Arkin won the best supporting actor Oscar for his performance in the "Little Miss Sunshine" (2006).  His prolific career includes roles in such films at "Catch-22," "The In-Laws," "The Rocketeer," "Glengarry Glen Ross," and "Argo," to name a few.

From Deadline:   The English film and television actor, Julian Sands, has been confirmed dead, at the age of 65.  Sands had been missing since mid-January when he was believed to be hiking on Mount Baldy, northeast of Los Angeles.  Hikers found human remains on Mount Baldy on June 24th, and they were confirmed as Sands Tues., June 27th, 2023.  His varied film career included roles in such films as "A Room with a View" (1985), "Gothic" (1986), "Warlock" (1989), "Boxing Helena" (1993), and "Leaving Las Vegas" (1995), to name a few.

From Deadline:  Television, film, and state actor, Nicolas Coster, has died at the age of 89, Monday, June 26, 2023.  Among his best known works are his roles on the former NBC daytime soaps, "Another World" (1970-80) and "Santa Barbara" (1984-93).  He appeared in numerous other TV series, including "Star Trek: The Next Generations," "Law & Order," and "As the World Turns," to name a few.  He won a Daytime Emmy Awards in 2017 and was nominated four other times for his work on "Santa Barbara."

SCANDAL - From Variety:  Actor Danny Masterson, best known for Fox's former sitcom, "That '70s Show" (1998-2006), has been convicted on two counts of "forcible rape," seeming from incidents back in 2003.  He faces 30 years in prison, with a sentencing hearing set for August 4th.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 5/26 to 5/28/2023 three-day Memorial Day weekend box office is Disney's "The Little Mermaid" with an estimated total of 95.5 million dollars.

From THR:  Actress-singer Stephanie Mills says that she can relate to the racist backlash fellow actress-singer Halle Bailey has face over playing the lead in "The Little Mermaid." When she was 17, Mills originated the role of "Dorothy" in Broadway's "The Wiz," a soulful re-imagining of "The Wizard of Oz."

STREAMING - From Variety:  Actress Kim Cattrall will return as "Samantha Jones" for the Season 2 finale of "And Just Like That," Max's revival of the beloved HBO series, "Sex in the City."  The new season of "And Just Like That" debuts June 22nd, but Cattrall's episode won't stream until August.

AMAZON - From Deadline Prime Video Australia is remaking the British sitcom, "The Office" (2001-03) as a female-led series with comedian Felicity Ward in the role Ricky Gervais made famous in the original.  Of course, there was the NBC's American remake, also entitled "The Office" (2005-13).

ANIMATION/MOVIES - From THR: Mason Thames will star as "Hiccup" and Nico Parker will star as "Astrid" in Universal's live-action version of DreamWorks Animation's 2010 3D-animated hit, "How to Train Your Dragon." Thames starred in Universal’s horror hit The Black Phone, and Parker was last seen in HBO’s "The Last of Us."  Universal has set the films for a March 14, 2025 theatrical release.

MOVIES - From THR:  Director Penelope Spheeris talks about how falling out with star Mike Myers on "Wayne's World" cost her the gig directing "Wayne's World 2."

MOVIES - From Variety:  During his post-Cannes 2023 tour of Italy, famed film director Martin Scorsese meet with Pope Francis, and the result is that Scorsese is going to make a film about Jesus Christ.

CANNES - From Deadline:  As Cannes 2023 ends, the festival's top honor, the "Palme d'Or," goes to the film, "Anatomy of a Fall."  The film's director, Justine Triet, becomes only the third woman to win that honor.

CANNES - From Variety:  A white male can direct a 200-million dollar flop and get the chance to direct another film, but she as a Latina would not get that second chance says actress and now director Eva Longoria.

STREAMING - From Variety:  Today, "HBO Max" becomes just "Max." Of course, the transition is not without some glitches.

MOVIES/TRAILERS - From Variety:  On Christmas Day 2023, "The Color Purple" returns to theaters as a musical from director Blitz Bazawule and executive producers Oprah Winfrey and Steven Spielberg. Warner Bros. has debuted the film's first trailer.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 5/19 to 2/21/2023 weekend box office is Universal's "Fast X" with an estimated take of 67.5 million dollars.

From Deadline:  Film and television actor, John Beasley, has died at the age of 79, Tuesday, May 30, 2023.  Beasley appeared in such films as "Rudy" (1993), "The General's Daughter" (1999), and "The Purge: Anarchy" (2014).  He was both a regular and a recurring character in TV Land's "The Soul Man" (2012-16) and also appeared in such TV series as "Millennium," "Treme," and "The Mandalorian," to name a few.

From RollingStone:  Singer, dancer, recording artist, actress, and author, Tina Turner, has died at the age of 83, Wednesday, May 24, 2023.  Born in America (Tennessee, USA), Turner was a naturalized citizen of Switzerland, where she died.  Born Anna Mae Bullock, she rose to prominence as "Tina Turner," half of the musical duo, the "Ike and Tina Turner Revue."  As part of this duo, she was nominated for four Grammy Awards and won one.  In 1976, Tina broke away from Ike, and began her solo career.  As a solo act, she was nominated for a Grammy 21 times and won seven of them.  Turner was a hugely successful touring act as a solo artist, and she also co-authored books and appeared in several films, most famously in 1985's "Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome."

From Variety:  Irish film and television actor, Ray Stevenson, has died at the age of 58, Monday, May 22, 2023.  He portrayed "Frank Castle/The Punisher" in the film, "Punisher: War Zone" (2008).  He played "Volstagg" in Marvel Studios' first three "Thor" films.  He is scheduled to appear in the upcoming Lucasfilm Disney+ series, "Ahsoka."

WRITERS STRIKE:

From Deadline:  Warner Bros Discovery chief David Zaslav gave the commencement address at Boston University. There he was met with jeers and also chants of "pay your writers" from picketers and from some in the audience.

From Deadline:   President Joe Biden speaks on the Writers Guild of America strike.

From Deadline:  Retaliation! The studios have starting informing writer-producers who have "overall" and "first-look" deals that such deals are being suspended.
