Review: "THE ADDAMS FAMILY 2" is a Truly Disappointing Sequel

The Addams Family 2 is a 2021 computer-animated supernatural comedy from directors Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan. The film is a sequel to the 2019 animated film, The Addams Family. Both films are based on the characters created by The New Yorker cartoonist, the late Charles Addams (1912-1988). The Addams Family 2 focuses on the Addams Family as take a road trip, during which a scientist pursues Wednesday.
The Addams Family 2 opens at a school science fair. There, Wednesday Addams (Chloe Grace Moretz) presents her experiment, in which she uses DNA from her pet squid, Socrates, on her Uncle Fester (Nick Kroll) to show how humans can be improved. Wednesday is somewhat put off that her family: father, Gomez Addams (Oscar Isaac); mother, Morticia (Charlize Theron); and her brother, Pugsley (Javon “Wanna” Walton) have decided to attend the science fair, which is sponsored by the Cyrus Strange Foundation. Cyrus Strange (Bill Hader) himself appears at the fair as a 3D hologram, and he is instantly drawn to Wednesday experiment and hopes to recruit her to work for him.
Back at home, Gomez Addams worries that the children are drifting apart from him and Morticia. He decides that a family vacation is just what is needed to keep the family together, so he declares that they are going on a road trip across the United States. Uncle Fester, Thing (the sentient hand), and Lurch (the butler) join them on the vacation, with everyone packing into an huge, odd-looking camper. Gomez even takes the family to Miami where he hopes Cousin Itt (Snoop Dogg) can help with the family dilemma.
There is a complication in these vacation plans, however. Cyrus Strange is determined to have Wednesday, and sends a shady lawyer, Mr. Mustela (Wallace Shawn), and a brutish henchman, Pongo (Ted Evans) to trick Gomez and Morticia into believing that Wednesday might be Cyrus' child. Wednesday is already having doubts about her connections to the Addams Family, so which family will she decide to choose, the Addams or Cyrus Strange?
Charles Addams' macabre cartoon characters first became “The Addams Family” in the former ABC television series, “The Addams Family” (1964-66). I have been a fan of that series since I was a child. As a child, I was also a fan of NBC's former Saturday morning cartoon series, “The Addams Family” (Hanna-Barbera, 1973). That series depicts the Addams Family on a cross-country road trip, exploring the United States in their “Creepy Camper” that resembles their Victorian-style mansion home. The Addams Family 2 is not a remake of that old cartoon series, but it does borrow a few elements from it.
The Addams Family 2019 was enough of a hit that producing a sequel probably seemed obvious to MGM, which holds the rights to produce Addams Family film and television series. The end result is something that looks and feels like a sequel that was rushed into production. The idea of Wednesday not being an Addams is a ridiculous plot. I can certainly accept the notion of a precocious child wondering about her parentage and lineage. However, if she is different from the rest of her family, it is because each member of the Addams Family is different from all others. That is the point this film makes at end of the story, but we didn't need an entire mediocre movie to tell us that. Raising questions about Wednesday's family is just a lame plot line.
So, it goes without saying that I did not like this film. The Addams Family 2 ends up being the latest in a long line of pitiful Hollywood road trip movies. I will say that the last 17 minutes of the film – before the end credits – are actually good. It is the only time that the film has any real conflict, melodrama, or action, and what happens in these seventeen minutes is actually consequential to the both the Addams Family and a few other supporting characters.
The Addams Family 2019 is my favorite media adaptation of “The Addams Family” characters outside of the 1960s and 1970s. It manages to be sweet, charming, heartwarming, and, of course, macabre – the way it should be. I gave it a B+, but The Addams Family 2 bored the hell outta me until the last seventeen minutes. I'm being generous giving it a C.

Review: 2021 "DUNE " is Both Tremendous and Tedious

Dune is a 2021 science fiction film directed by Denis Villeneuve. It is based on the 1965 novel, Dune, written by author Frank Herbert. This the third screen adaptation of Herbert's novel after writer-director David Lynch's 1984 film and writer-director John Harrison's 2000 television miniseries. Dune 2021 focuses on the male heir to a noble family who finds himself in the middle of conspiracy and prophecy on a desert planet where is found the most vital element in the universe.
Dune opens in the far future in the year 10,191. The most valuable substance in the universe is “Spice,” which extends human vitality and life and is absolutely necessary for space travel. Spice is only found on the desert planet, Arrakis. For over eighty years, House Harkonnen, one of the noble houses of the “Landsraad,” has mined the planet for Spice.
Now, the Emperor of the Known Universe has ordered House Harkonnen to withdraw from the planet. The Emperor has appointed Duke Leto I (Oscar Isaac) of House Atreides and ruler of the ocean planet, Caladan, as the new fief ruler of Arrakis and the one responsible for the mining of Spice.
However, Paul Atreides (Timothée Chalamet), the son of Leto and his concubine, Lady Jessica (Rebecca Ferguson), is the focus of the Bene Gesserit, a powerful sisterhood who wield advance mental and physical abilities, to which Jessica belongs. The Bene Gesserit have a prophecy concerning a “superbeing,” called the “Kwisatz Haderach,” and Paul may be this superbeing because of the machinations of his mother. Meanwhile, Paul has dreams and visions, most of them set on Arrakis and involving the natives of Arrakis, the “Fremen.” And of the Fremen, Paul dreams most of a mysterious young woman (Zendaya) with blue in her eyes. Paul knows that his fate lies on Arrakis, and he will discover it if he survives the plot against his family.
Although the title of this film is “Dune,” when the movie starts the credits read “Dune: Part One.” That's right, director Denis Villeneuve refused to adapt Frank Herbert's novel as one long film when he preferred to do it as two long films. I have seen Herbert's novel referred to as “unwieldy” source material, but the truth is that like Robert A. Heinlein's novel, Starship Troopers (1959), which was adapted into a 1997 film, Dune is philosophical and thoughtful. Much of the narrative takes place in the minds of its major characters, and I don't think that big-budget, event Hollywood films are really good at internal philosophical monologues.
Denis Villeneuve's Dune is visually ambitious. It is pomp and circumstance. It focuses on the rituals of the Landsraad (the empire's noble houses) and of the Fremen – to the point of being anthropological. Dune is costumes, uniforms, makeup, hairdos, and lavish spectacle. Dune offers some of the most imaginatively designed space crafts, flying contraptions, utility machines, and personal devices outside of the Star Wars films. It leans towards opulence in its breathtaking landscapes and astonishing vistas. This visual and design aesthetic creates the kind of overwhelming cinematic sensory experience that is exactly why we need to see some films in movie theaters.
Villeneuve apparently also said that Dune has “power in details,” and his obsession with details, both in terms of visuals and narratives, is a problem for Dune, much in the way it was a problem for his acclaimed 2016 film, The Arrival … to a lesser extent. For Dune, he builds a big world in pictures and images, and then, he and his co-writers Jon Spaihts and Eric Roth (the ones who are credited onscreen), drag the movie out by drowning every key scene and sequence in detail. There is no better example of this than the scene with the “Herald of the Change” (Benjamin Clementine), when Duke Leto formerly excepts his assignment to Arrakis. It was pointless scene about the pointlessness of the Emperor and his rituals.
At one point while watching this film, I checked my phone and realized that there was still an hour to go. I wasn't sure if I could make. I could not understand how a film could be so visually dazzling as Dune is and have a story that frustratingly seems to be going somewhere … slowly. And Dune's wonderful cast goes right along with this, delivering performances that are earnest in their grimness. Still, the actors didn't make me want to connect with their characters, and Rebecca Ferguson's Lady Jessica is just fucking tiresome.
I am giving this film a B+ because of two things – the sometimes unbelievable visuals and, surprisingly, Hans Zimmer's amazing musical score, for which he supposedly created new musical instruments. Without his constantly inventive score, this film would put people to sleep. If I were focusing only on story, I'd give Dune a B- or a B, because there are some characters that are fascinating the few times they are on screen, such as Baron Harkonnen (Stellan Skarsgard) and his nephew, Rabban (Dave Bautista). There are also a few scenes that resonate. I really don't know how to recommend a film that will impress you almost as much as it will tire you, but that Denis Villeneuve's Dune in a nutshell.

The Addams Family the movie focuses on an eccentrically macabre family and their interactions with the denizens of a colorful, but bland suburb.
The Addams Family opens as Gomez (Oscar Isaac) and Morticia (Charlize Theron) prepare to marry in front of their eccentric, odd, and weird family members. However, the people of the local town despise the macabre nature of the happy couple and their family, and chase them away. Luckily, the newlywed Morticia and Gomez and their companion, Thing (sentient hand), escape to New Jersey. There, the trio finds two things. The first is a home in an abandoned and decaying manor-style building that was once an asylum, and the second is a butler in the hulking Lurch (Conrad Vernon).
Thirteen years later, Morticia and Gomez have two children – a precocious and mordacious, Wednesday (Chloe Grace Moretz); and an explosives-loving son, Pugsley (Finn Wolfhard). The family is in kind of a state of crisis. Gomez struggles as he prepares Pugsley for his upcoming “Sabre Mazurka,” a rite of passage that every male Addams family member must pass. Morticia struggles to keep Wednesday from wanting to experience the world outside the mansion, which includes the girl's desire to go to school.
Elsewhere, reality TV host, Margaux Needler (Allison Janney), is in the middle of building a perfect planned community that she is calling, “Assimilation.” This is supposed to be the highlight of her television series' season finale. However, when she discovers that the Addams' dilapidated home overlooks Assimilation, Margaux is determined to give their home an extreme makeover, whether they like it or not. Meanwhile, many members of the Addams clan are gradually arriving in order to celebrate Pulley's big day.
I have been a fan of ABC's 1960s television series, “The Addams Family” (1964-66), since I was a child. As a child, I was also a fan of NBC's Saturday morning cartoon series, “The Addams Family” (1973). I have mixed feelings about Orion Pictures' two 1990s live-action films, The Addams Family (1991) and Addams Family Values (1993). As an adult, I became a huge fan of the work of Charles Addams, especially of his delightfully macabre cartoons that featured the characters that would become known as “The Addams Family.”
The latest media iteration of these characters, the computer-animated The Addams Family, borrows elements from the Addams Family media that has come before it. Here, the illustrative and graphic design of the characters and their world recall both Addams cartoons and the 1973 TV series, although I find the way this film's Morticia and Gomez look to be a little off-putting. Overall, however, I find the look of this film visually appealing, and I think the Addams family's relatives are an interesting lot of inventively designed characters.
One thing that I think The Addams Family 2019 has over The Addams Family 1990s film franchise is that this animated film gets it right in the way it contrasts the Addams family against the outside world. Charles Addams' best cartoons juxtaposed his creepy characters and their playfully insidious actions with the normal human world. Much about the 1990s films was insular and did not send the family out into the normal world. The second film did, at least, send Wednesday and Pugsley to summer camp, which is why I think the second film is much better than the first.
By sending the Addams down the mountain to meet their neighbors in this film, the filmmakers get to play with themes and ideas of individuality, conformity, acceptance, change, and family, which makes this movie more than just another cartoon romp featuring a bunch of strange characters. Ultimately, The Addams Family 2019 emphasizes that a family can be made up of both different people and of people who live and act differently from the rest of the family.
This film's standout voice actor/character pairs are Chloe Grace Moretz as Wednesday and Allison Janney as Margaux Needler. Nick Kroll delivers a killer turn as Uncle Fester, and Bette Midler takes what is a small role in Grandmama Addams and makes it feel like a major part. Jenifer Lewis, with her commanding voice and delivery, turns Great Auntie Loom into a character that steals scenes.
The Addams Family 2019 is my favorite media adaptation of “The Addams Family” characters outside of the 1960s and 1970s. I highly recommend this film to fans of the characters. It does take a while for the film to get going – about 20 minutes into the story, but it manages to be sweet, charming, heartwarming, and, of course, macabre – the way it should be.

The big-screen adaptation of Frank Herbert’s seminal bestseller Dune stars Oscar nominee Timothée Chalamet (“Call Me by Your Name”), Rebecca Ferguson (“Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation”), Oscar Isaac (“Star Wars: Episode VIII – The Last Jedi”), Oscar nominee Josh Brolin (“Milk,” “Deadpool 2,” “Avengers: Infinity War”), Stellan Skarsgård (the “Mamma Mia!” films, “Avengers: Age of Ultron”), Dave Bautista (the “Guardians of the Galaxy” films, upcoming “Avengers: Endgame”), Zendaya (“Spider-Man: Homecoming”), David Dastmalchian (the “Ant-Man” movies), Stephen Henderson (“Fences,” “Lady Bird”), with Oscar nominee Charlotte Rampling (“45 Years,” “Assassin’s Creed”), with Jason Momoa (“Aquaman”), and Oscar winner Javier Bardem (“No Country for Old Men,” “Skyfall”). A mythic and emotionally charged hero’s journey, “Dune” tells the story of Paul Atreides, a brilliant and gifted young man born into a great destiny beyond his understanding, who must travel to the most dangerous planet in the universe to ensure the future of his family and his people. As malevolent forces explode into conflict over the planet’s exclusive supply of the most precious resource in existence—a commodity capable of unlocking humanity’s greatest potential—only those who can conquer their fear will survive.
Villeneuve is directing “Dune” from a screenplay he co-wrote with Eric Roth and Jon Spaihts based on Herbert’s novel. The film is being produced by Mary Parent, Cale Boyter, Joe Caracciolo and Villeneuve. It is the ninth movie in the Star Wars film franchise, which began with the 1977 Oscar-winning film, Star Wars, created by George Lucas. The Last Jedi is also a direct sequel to Star Wars: The Force Awakens (2015) and the eighth Star Wars “episode” film. The Last Jedi focuses on a young woman who takes her first steps into the world of the Jedi and tries to unlock the mysteries of The Force and the secrets of the past.
Star Wars: The Last Jedi finds the wannabe galactic rulers, the First Order, and its Supreme Commander Snoke (Andy Serkis), ascendant. The First Order moves to destroy the main base of its enemy, the Resistance. General Leia Organa (Carrie Fisher) struggles to keep the Resistance one step ahead of the First Order. Heroic Resistance pilot, Poe Dameron (Oscar Isaac), leads the charge that gives the Resistance vessels the time they need to jump into hyperspace to escape the First Order. However, escaping the First Order will not be so easy, and now stormtropper turned Resistance fighter, Finn (John Boyega), and mechanic, Rose Tico (Kelly Marie Tran), must execute a dangerous mission to allow the Resistance to really escape the First Order.
Meanwhile, budding Jedi, Rey (Daisy Ridley), is on the planet, Ahch-To, where she has found the long-missing Jedi Knight legend, Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill). However, Luke refuses to initiate Rey into the ways of the Force and also declares that the Jedi Order must end with him. Frustrated, Rey also discovers that she has some kind of psychic connection to Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), Luke's former student who turned to the Dark Side and now serves Snoke and the Resistance.
I found Star Wars: The Last Jedi to be as entertaining and as well-made as Star Wars: The Force Awakens. It is quite thrilling at times and kept my on the proverbial edge of my seat hoping our heroes could survive the overwhelming First Order odds against them. The Last Jedi is not exactly a “non-stop thrill machine,” but it is thrilling. But neither The Last Jedi nor The Force Awakens are as good as 2016's Rogue One: A Star Wars film.
I thought about why I feel that way. I thought about it, and I think that The Force Awakens and The Last Jedi both suffer because Star Wars creator George Lucas did not have direct hand in making them.
For all the criticism leveled against Lucas by critics and fans over the decades, especially because of the Lucas directed “prequel” films, (Star Wars: Episodes I to III), Lucas is a wildly imaginative and inventive filmmaker and storyteller. Each prequel film had enough subplots, characters, settings, worlds, ideas, and creatures to power its own film trilogy. Lucas' weakness (relatively speaking) seems to be in the execution of telling a film story via screenplay and directing (especially in directing actors). Visually, Lucas' films seem almost too big for even the biggest movie screens, but that size and scale comes at the cost of the narrative.
The Force Awakens (Episode VII) and The Last Jedi (Episode VIII) are disciplined and narrow in focus, in terms of plot. The Last Jedi focuses on (1) the struggle of the Resistance to escape destruction at the hands of the First Order and (2) Rey's quest to discover the secrets of the Jedi and the Force. The Last Jedi is so focused that it looses the sense of wonder that permeates the original Star Wars films. Instead, The Last Jedi references and remakes scenes from Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983). Some people complained that The Force Awakens was a kind of remake and reboot of the original Star Wars film, but The Last Jedi does not do that as much. [Strangely, I find that Rogue One, which is a side story connected to Star Wars 1977, comes across as a fresh, new take on Star Wars, while being true to the work of George Lucas.]
Star Wars: The Last Jedi is a Star Wars movie, and I will likely always love all Star Wars movies, to one extent or another. [Every time one is on TV, I try to watch at least some of it.] So I love The Last Jedi and will give it a high grade. However, this final trilogy (Episodes VII to IX) is starting to seem like fan fiction, created by writers and directors who cherry pick ideas from their childhood Star Wars favorite moments. Maybe the current owner of Star Wars, The Walt Disney Company, and the filmmakers it hires to continue the “Star Wars saga” are really afraid of new ideas or too many new ideas. Maybe, Disney got the message; the prequel trilogy looked too different from the original trilogy and audiences, at least the vocal part of it, were pissed. Well, the Disney-produced Star Wars films will suffer for playing it safe.
Let me summarize my thoughts and feelings this way. If Disney replaced the title, Star Wars: The Last Jedi, with something else, say Alien or Predator, I would give this film a rating of 5 or 6 out of 10 at most. This 8 out of 10 is the kind of love you show family.

Review: "X-Men: Apocalypse" is Garbage

X-Men: Apocalypse is a 2016 superhero movie from director Bryan Singer. It is 20th Century Fox’s eighth film based on Marvel Comics’ X-Men comic book franchise. This new movie is a sequel to X-Men: Days of Future Past. In X-Men Apocalypse, the world's first mutant, a world-destroyer, reemerges and begins a plan for human extinction that the X-Men must stop.
X-Men: Apocalypse opens in Ancient Egypt, 3600BC and introduces En Sabah Nur/Apocalypse (Oscar Isaac), the ruler of that land and a supremely powerful mutant believed to be the very first of his kind. He is betrayed by some of his worshipers and is buried alive for centuries. Apocalypse arises in 1983 and is upset to discover what he considers “false gods” to have arisen in his absence. He gathers “four horsemen” and Erik Lensherr/Magneto (Michael Fassbender) is one of the quartet. Apocalypse begins to unleash an extinction level plan to clean the Earth of everything and everyone, so that only the strong survive.
Meanwhile, Charles Xavier/Professor X (James McAvoy) continues to build his educational institute in Westchester County, New York. He is also adding new students, when a former friend, Raven/Mystique (Jennifer Lawrence), returns to warn him of Magneto's new activities. When they learn the extent of Apocalypse's threat, the X-Men are forced to come together to save the world.
Some believe that Superman: The Movie, originally released in 1978, is the beginning of the modern superhero film. Other believe that the current age of superhero movies was spearheaded by Tim Burton's 1989 film, Batman. [Those are good choices, but I believe the current superhero movie rage was born of the surprise (even shocking) success of the 1998 film, Blade. Its success spurred Fox into producing X-Men (2000), which was a hit and which really pushed superhero movie production into overdrive.]
I am starting to believe that the most influential film in the current onslaught of superhero movies is 2012's Marvel's The Avengers. Why? The Avengers' immediate and massive success at the box office was practically unprecedented. It's opening weekend dollar gross set what was at the time a record for North American box office. It's worldwide box office exceeded a billion dollars, and while that was not the first time a superhero movie crossed the billion-dollar mark (which 2008's The Dark Knight did first), I don't think anyone, not Disney, Marvel, box office watchers, or movie fans, expected The Avengers to be so successful in terms of box office – not before its release.
Such surprising success breeds copycats. Superhero movies that are big, even massive, and filled with destruction followed The Avengers. See Warner Bros. The Man of Steel (2013) and Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (2015). In fact, the latter is Warner Bros. desperate attempt to make an Avengers-like movie featuring characters from DC Comics, which is, like Warner Bros., part of Time Warner.
To me, X-Men: Days of Future Past was trapped between being 2011's X-Men: First Class and Marvel's The Avengers. X-Men: Apocalypse reeks of the desperation to be like The Avengers. 20th Century Fox owns the film rights to Marvel Comics X-Men franchise, and as Fox makes one mediocre and/or financial failure X-Men movie after another, they cannot help but look at Marvel Studios' unprecedented success with the Marvel Comics characters to which it still has film rights. Hell, Fox isn't the only Hollywood studio that wants to be like Marvel.
But the X-Men are not the Avengers. The Avengers are a gathering of loosely connected superheroes who come together to defend Earth – or avenge it. The X-Men can be superheroes, but their story has largely been about a racial minority, known as “Mutants,” that bands together for protection. Their acts of heroism are essentially a defense of the race or species. It is as if the X-Men's heroic actions declare that they can peacefully coexist on this planet with humans, which gives them reason to want to defend it.
X-Men: Apocalypse is just a big action movie. Familiar X-Men themes: fear, racism, bigotry, tribalism, unity, extended families, familial and friendship bonds, etc. are just window dressing for big special effects driven and created set pieces. X-Men: Apocalypse does not take from the wheelhouse of the best X-Men films (such as the first two films in the franchise); instead, it steals from Marvel's The Avengers and even Michael Bay's Transformers movies.
You know what, dear reader? I've taken enough of your time. I hate this movie.
