Review: I Can't Help But Love "HER"
TRASH IN MY EYE No. 40 (of 2014) by Leroy Douresseaux
Her (2013)
Running time: 126 minutes (2 hours, 6 minutes)
MPAA – R for language, sexual content and brief graphic nudity
WRITER/DIRECTOR: Spike Jonze
PRODUCERS: Megan Ellison, Spike Jonze, and Vincent Landay
CINEMATOGRAPHER: Hoyte Van Hoytema (D.o.P.)
EDITORS: Jeff Buchanan and Eric Zumbrunnen
COMPOSER: Will Butler and Owen Pallett
MUSIC: Arcade Fire
Academy Award winner
SCI-FI/DRAMA/ROMANCE
Starring: Joaquin Phoenix, Scarlett Johansson (voice), Amy Adams, Rooney Mara, Chris Pratt, Matt Letscher, Olivia Wilde, Gracie Prewitt, Laura Kai Chen, and Brian Cox (voice)
Her is a 2013 romantic drama and science fiction film from writer-director Spike Jonze. The film focus on a lonely writer who develops an unlikely relationship with the new operating system he bought for his computer and hand-held device.
Her is set in an indeterminate near-future and focuses on Theodore Twombly (Joaquin Phoenix), a lonely, introverted man. Theodore works for BeautifulHandwrittenLetters.com, a business that writes heartfelt, intimate, and deeply personal letters for people who cannot write such letters. Theodore is struggling with an impending divorce from his wife, Catherine Klausen (Rooney Mara), who was his childhood sweetheart.
To help get his life in order, Theodore buys a new operating system (OS) from Element Software. This OS is an artificially intelligent operating system that is designed to adapt and evolve. Taking on the persona of a human female, the OS names itself “Samantha” (Scarlett Johansson). [Of note: actress Samantha Morton originally provided the voice of the OS, before Jonze replaced her, with her consent.] Her ability to learn and to grow psychologically fascinates Theodore. Samantha and Theodore bond over discussions about love and life, and Samantha is constantly available and is designed to meet his every need. She is always curious about Theodore and is interested in him and his life; she is supportive and does not make demands... at least for a while. Theodore is in love with her, but, as she changes, can Theodore sustain this relationship?
Her is one of the best movies of 2013, and, after watching it, I can certainly see why some thought it was the best picture of 2013. I think what Her does best is to evoke feelings in the viewer; it is as if director Spike Jonze wants viewers to feel his movie. I did.
There is a lot that goes into making a special movie, and several people made this movie one of the best. In Her, Joaquin Phoenix does not give one of his best or most adventurous performances, but his subtle and nuanced take on a puppy-love struck, lonely man is endearing. He carries this picture, as well as the viewers' expectations, so his performance is so good that even if it isn't his best, it is still better than most by other actors.
The film's score by Will Butler and Owen Pallett is oddly compelling and queerly futuristic without feeling too far-flung. The score was apparently performed by the Grammy-winning band, Arcade Fire, of which Butler is a member. Hoyte Van Hoytema's gorgeous cinematography is curiously in sync with the score, and it also seems like it belongs to another day. In fact, the art direction and set decoration helps to maintain that almost futuristic, edge-of-tomorrow vibe.
The foundation of Her is Spike Jonze's screenplay, which earned him an Academy Award. It is deeply romantic, heartfelt, and sentimental; it is like a romance novel without melodrama and schmaltz. The writing is thoughtful and provocative, one of the best examples of a screenplay that takes on science fiction without being taken over by sci-fi genre trappings.
I often wonder if science fiction is still relevant; some of it seemed clueless about the lives that many people lived in the late 20th century. I don't know how much science fiction can address pertinent issues in the early 21st century, but I know one science fiction film that did. I think that by plot, by the issues it tackles, and by what it depicts, Her is relevant now and will be in the future. With Her, Spike Jonze does not do science fiction prediction. Instead, he addresses the unchanging aspects of humanity as it grapples with a changing world and evolving environment. What a way to bring new life to the love story.

Book Signing Celebrates "The 101 Best Film Noir Posters"
Film Noir Poster Exhibition at Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery
Seattle, WA. Fantagraphics Bookstore & Gallery is pleased to host an exhibition of posters featured in the new boo,k 101 Best Film Noir Posters from the 1940s-1950s. The show opens on Saturday, September 13 from 6:00 to 9:00 PM. Editor Mark Fertig will be available to discuss the work and sign copies of the book. The exhibition continues through November 10, 2014.
The film noir genre holds a special place in American cinema and the posters reveal a lot about mid-century aesthetics. As director William Friedkin observes in the book's introduction, "he posters convey the style and content of the movies they were designed to advertise, and yet they represent an art form of their own. They are a valid and important school of American art." These posters depict the biggest stars from the Golden Age of Hollywood in some of their most memorable roles. The book includes both a synopsis and fascinating analysis of the films depicted by the posters.
Mark Fertig will attend the opening to discuss and sign copies of the book. This event coincides with the colorful Georgetown Art Attack, featuring visual and performing arts presentations throughout the historic arts community. Fantagraphics Bookstore is located at 1201 S. Vale Street (at Airport Way S.), just minutes south of downtown Seattle. Open daily 11:30 to 8:00 PM, Sundays until 5:00 PM. Phone 206.658.0110.

Black to direct the pair in “The Nice Guys,” set to hit theaters June 17, 2016
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Silver Pictures’ upcoming detective thriller “The Nice Guys,” directed by Shane Black (“Iron Man 3”) and starring Oscar winner Russell Crowe (“Gladiator,” “Man of Steel”) and Oscar nominee Ryan Gosling (“Half Nelson,” “Drive”), has staked out the summertime date of June 17, 2016. “The Nice Guys” takes place in 1970s Los Angeles, when down-on-his-luck private eye Holland March (Gosling) and hired leg-breaker Jackson Healy (Crowe) must work together to solve the case of a missing girl and the seemingly unrelated death of a porn star. Hayao Miyazaki and Harry Belafonte Among New Governors Awards and Oscar Statuette Recipients
Harry Belafonte, Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki And Maureen O'Hara To Receive Academy's Governors Awards
LOS ANGELES, CA — The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 26, 2014) to present Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O’Hara, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte. All four awards will be presented at the Academy’s 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.
“The Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “We’re absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November.”
Carrière, who began his career as a novelist, was introduced to screenwriting by French comedian and filmmaker Pierre Étaix, with whom he shared an Oscar® for the live action short subject “Heureux Anniversaire (Happy Anniversary)” in 1962. He received two more nominations during his nearly two-decade collaboration with director Luis Buñuel, for the screenplays for “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “That Obscure Object of Desire.” Carrière also has collaborated notably with such directors as Volker Schlöndorff (“The Tin Drum”), Jean-Luc Godard (“Every Man for Himself”) and Andrzej Wajda (“Danton”). He earned a fourth Oscar nomination for “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” with director Philip Kaufman.
Miyazaki is an artist, writer, director, producer and three-time Oscar nominee in the Animated Feature Film category, winning in 2002 for “Spirited Away.” His other nominations were for “Howl’s Moving Castle” in 2005 and “The Wind Rises” last year. Miyazaki gained an enormous following in his native Japan for such features as “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “Laputa: Castle in the Sky,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” before breaking out internationally in the late 1990s with “Princess Mononoke.” He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a renowned animation studio based in Tokyo.
O’Hara, a native of Dublin, Ireland, came to Hollywood in 1939 to star opposite Charles Laughton in “The Hunchback of Notre Dame.” She went on to appear in a wide range of feature films, including the swashbucklers “The Black Swan” and “Sinbad the Sailor,” the dramas “This Land Is Mine” and “A Woman’s Secret,” the family classics “Miracle on 34th Street” and “The Parent Trap,” the spy comedy “Our Man in Havana” and numerous Westerns. She was a favorite of director John Ford, who cast her in five of his films, including “How Green Was My Valley,” “Rio Grande” and “The Quiet Man.”
An actor, producer, singer and lifelong activist, Belafonte began performing in theaters and nightclubs in and around Harlem, where he was born. From the beginning of his film career, he chose projects that shed needed light on racism and inequality, including “Carmen Jones,” “Odds against Tomorrow” and “The World, the Flesh and the Devil.” He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, marching and organizing alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and often funding initiatives with his entertainment income. Belafonte was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1987 and currently serves on the boards of the Advancement Project and the Institute for Policy Studies. His work on behalf of children, education, famine relief, AIDS awareness and civil rights has taken him all over the world.
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”
The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, also an Oscar statuette, is given “to an individual in the motion picture industry whose humanitarian efforts have brought credit to the industry.”

Robert Zemeckis' "The Walk" Due October 2015
TRISTAR ANNOUNCES TITLE AND WRAP OF PRODUCTION FOR "THE WALK"
3D / IMAX 3D CAPER FILM DIRECTED BY ROBERT ZEMECKIS STARRING JOSEPH GORDON-LEVITT BASED ON PHILIPPE PETIT’S BOOK "TO REACH THE CLOUDS"
This is the 40th Anniversary of Petit’s August 7, 1974 Walk Between the Twin Towers
MONTRÉAL, Canada, Principal photography has wrapped on the inaugural film from Tom Rothman’s TriStar Productions, now officially titled The Walk. Directed by Robert Zemeckis, the film is a true story based on Philippe Petit’s book "To Reach the Clouds," starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt as the young dreamer who dared the impossible: an illegal wire walk between the World Trade Center towers. Zemeckis wrote the screenplay with Christopher Browne. Producers are Steve Starkey, Robert Zemeckis, and Jack Rapke. The film will be released on October 2, 2015.
August 7 was the 40th anniversary of the astounding event, now being brought back to vivid life in the third act climax of the film.
Twelve people have walked on the moon, but only one man has ever, or will ever, walk in the immense void between the World Trade Center towers. Guided by his real-life mentor, Papa Rudy (Ben Kingsley), and aided by an unlikely band of international recruits, Petit and his gang overcome long odds, betrayals, dissension and countless close calls to conceive and execute their mad plan. Robert Zemeckis, the director of such marvels as Forrest Gump, Cast Away, Back to the Future, Polar Express, and Flight, again uses cutting edge technology in the service of an emotional, character-driven story. With innovative photorealistic techniques and IMAX 3D wizardry, The Walk is true big-screen cinema, a chance for moviegoers to viscerally experience the feeling of reaching the clouds. The film is a love letter to Paris and New York City in the 1970s, but most of all, to the Towers of the World Trade Center.
Also starring in the film are James Badge Dale, Ben Schwartz, Charlotte Le Bon, Clément Sibony and César Domboy.
The production’s creative team includes director of photography Dariusz Wolski, production designer Naomi Shohan, editor Jeremiah O’Driscoll, and costume designer Suttirat Larlarb. The composer is Alan Silvestri.
Moviegoers can follow the film on the official movie site at www.thewalkmovie.com, on Facebook at www.facebook.com/TheWalkMovie or on Twitter @TheWalkMovie.
Photos from the film were made available at www.sonypicturespublicity.com on Thursday, August 7th at 9AM Pacific time.

"If I Say" Inspired Song and YouTube Sensation Now on iTunes
WaterTower Music Announces Release of “If I Stay – Song Inspired by The Book” by Fan Abigail Wate, Discovered on YouTube
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music today announced the release of the digital single “If I Stay – Song Inspired by The Book” by Abigail Wate.
If I Stay author Gayle Forman, who served as an executive producer on New Line Cinema’s and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ film of the same name, found a video of Abigail singing the song on YouTube and immediately shared it by social media. WaterTower Music, who released the soundtrack for “If I Stay,” also embraced the song and has released it digitally on iTunes.
Miss Wate, an aspiring musician living in Nashville, Tennessee, stated, “Reading has been the inspiration for my songwriting for years. I read If I Stay for the first time when I was thirteen and the story was so captivating and moved me so much that I had to write a song just to get out ‘all the feels.’ While I was composing the song “If I Stay” my mind was still caught up in all the emotion of Mia and Adam’s world. It goes beyond anything I could have imagined for my first single to be a part of this amazing project.”
Released on August 29, the single for “If I Stay – Song Inspired by The Book” is now available at iTunes.
The soundtrack for the film is also now available at iTunes and Amazon.
About WaterTower Music
WaterTower Music, the in house music label for Warner Bros., has been releasing recorded music since 2001. About “If I Stay”
Gayle Forman’s best-selling novel comes to the big screen in New Line Cinema’s and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures’ drama “If I Stay,” starring Chloë Grace Moretz (“Carrie,” the “Kick-Ass” films), Mireille Enos (TV’s “The Killing,” “World War Z”); Joshua Leonard (“Higher Ground”); Jamie Blackley (“Snow White and the Huntsman”); and Stacy Keach (“Nebraska”).
Mia Hall (Moretz) thought the hardest decision she would ever face would be whether to pursue her musical dreams at Juilliard or follow a different path to be with the love of her life, Adam (Blackley). But what should have been a carefree family drive changes everything in an instant, and now her own life hangs in the balance. Caught between life and death for one revealing day, Mia has only one decision left, which will not only decide her future but her ultimate fate.
Also starring are Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard as Mia’s parents, Kat and Denny, and Stacy Keach as Gramps. Rounding out the main cast are Jakob Davies as Mia’s little brother, Liana Liberato as her best friend, Gabrielle Rose as Gran, and Aisha Hinds as Nurse Ramirez.
R.J. Cutler (“The September Issue,” TV’s “Nashville”) directed the film from a screenplay by Shauna Cross (“Whip It”) based on Forman’s novel. “If I Stay” was produced by Alison Greenspan (“The Lucky One”), with Denise Di Novi, Forman and Brad Van Arragon serving as executive producers.

Cutler’s behind-the-scenes team included cinematographer John de Borman (“An Education”), production designer Brent Thomas (“The Big Year”), editor Keith Henderson (TV’s “Justified”), costume designer Monique Prudhomme (TV’s “Bates Motel,” “Juno”) and composer Heitor Pereira (the “Despicable Me” films).
New Line Cinema and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures present a Di Novi Pictures Production, “If I Stay.” Rated PG-13 for thematic elements and some sexual material, the film is being distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment company, and Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures. ifistaymovie.com

Peter Mayhew, Chewbacca of the "Star Wars" Film, to Attend 2014 Baltimore Comic-Con
Peter "Chewbacca" Mayhew to be Media Guest of Honor at the Baltimore Comic-Con
BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - The Baltimore Comic-Con, returning to the Baltimore Convention Center on Friday, September 5th through Sunday, September 7th, is privileged to announce our 2014 Media Guest of Honor. Peter Mayhew, known by fans the world over for his portrayal of Chewbacca, the Wookie co-pilot of the Millennium Falcon in Star Wars, The Empire Strikes Back, and Return of the Jedi. Peter is currently filming Star Wars Episode VII, due to be released in 2015, and will appear with us all three days of the 2014 Baltimore Comic-Con!
Mayhew was born in Barnes, England, and at the age of eight was diagnosed with giantism. While working as an orderly at London's King's College Hospital, a reporter took a photo of him which was published in a local paper, an event that would change his life.
That photo demonstrated Peter's towering 7'3" figure and giant frame. By mere chance, the producers of Sinbad and the Eye of the Tiger saw this picture, which led to Peter being cast as the Minoton in his first film. Once Peter finished filming, he returned to his job at the hospital, only to be called again to audition with a gentleman by the name of George Lucas about his project, Star Wars. George walked into the room, Peter stood up to shake his hand like a proper Englishman, and the rest is history.
Peter brought the mighty wookiee Chewbacca to life in Star Wars (1977), The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978), Empire Strikes Back (1980), The Muppet Show (1980), and Return of the Jedi (1983).
When the movies were finished, Peter moved to Yorkshire where he lived quietly for 14 years. As the Star Wars Special Edition movies were being released in 1997, Peter found himself in high demand on the SciFi Convention circuit, and began making personal appearances around the world. In 1999 he married and packed his bags, made the jump across the pond, and moved to Texas where he eventually became an American citizen.
Peter was again asked to reprise his role as Chewbacca in Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith, introducing Chewie's home planet of Kashyyyk and the world of Wookiees. In 2011, Lucasfilm flew Peter and his wife Angie out to Skywalker Ranch to consult with the animators and artists as they introduced Chewie into the Clone Wars series. After 30 years, Peter's relationship with his beloved character came full circle by having him voice Chewbacca in Star Wars: The Clone Wars.
Currently, he is on hiatus from filming the highly anticipated Star Wars Episode VII, which will be hitting theaters next year. Peter will be at the Baltimore Comic-Con all three days, signing autographs and taking photos at his table. He will also be doing a panel Sunday.
"We are amazingly lucky to be adding Peter as a guest this close to the show date," said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "Chewbacca is one of the cultural icons coming out of the Star Wars series, and is recognized and loved by fans young and old. We know the Star Wars fans are going to be beside themselves with this announcement!"
The Baltimore Comic-Con will be held Friday, September 5 through Sunday, September 7, 2014, at the Baltimore Convention Center, which is located immediately across the street from the historic Camden Yards sports complex (which includes Oriole Park and Geppi's Entertainment Museum). Tickets, a full guest roster, and additional information is available on the convention's website.

2014 Primetime Emmy Awards - Complete Winners List
by Leroy Douresseaux
AMC's much-loved crime drama, “Breaking Bad” (which ended last year) won five awards at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, including for best drama series and lead actor. “Modern Family” won its fifth consecutive award for best comedy series, one of three awards its won. Other multiple winners included “Fargo,” Sherlock: His Last Vow, and “American Horror Story: Coven.”
To me, the entire ceremony seemed stuck in a loop that began three or four years ago. Television is supposed to be in a new golden age. However, all the buzzed-about shows like Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black lose to the same shows and performers who have been winning again and again for what seems like ages. And “The Walking Dead” doesn't even get nominations in the major categories. Oh, well...
The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Monday, August 25, 2014. The ceremony aired on NBC and was hosted by Seth Meyers.

DAVID BOWIE TO STAR IN COMIC BOOK
In a summer filled with music, Bluewater Productions announced the release of new comic book biography of music icon David Bowie.
Fame: David Bowie will be released this week in print as well as digital. This summer, Bluewater has released biographical comic books featuring Kurt Cobain, Amy Winehouse, and Freddie Mercury as part of their popular Tribute series.

Few artists are able to make the impact on both the worlds of music and acting that David Bowie has. As a longtime fan of his work in both areas, it was an honor and privilege to work on this book,” said artist George Amaru.
Bluewater has focused on other music icons in the past such as Paul McCartney, Prince, John Lennon, Jimi Hendrix, Jim Morrison, Keith Richards and more.
Coming soon are comic books featuring Alice Cooper, George Harrison, and the cast of Doctor Who.
