Rated “M/ Mature”

Creepshow is a new horror comic book anthology series from Image Comics.  It is a TV-tie in to the horror anthology television series, “Creepshow,” that currently streams on “Shudder” and later airs on the cable TV network, “AMC.”  Of course, both the comic book and TV series are descendants of the 1982 horror and comedy film, Creepshow, which was directed by the late George A. Romero and written by Stephen King.  Each issue of Creepshow the comic book will feature different creative teams with uniquely horrifying (and sometimes horrible) standalone stories.

Creephow #1 contains two stories.  The first is “Take One,” which is written and drawn by Chris Burnham and colored by Adriano Lucas.  The second story is “Shingo,” which is written by Paul Dini and Stephen Langford; drawn by John McCrea; and colored by Mike Spicer.  Both stories are lettered by the great Pat Brosseau.  Creepshow's horro host, “The Creep,” narrates the story.

THE LOWDOWN:  I'm going to summarize and review each story separately:

“Take One” by Burnham, Lucas, and Brosseau:
It's Halloween night.  Scaredy-cat Phil is wearing a poorly made mummy costume, and he is trick-or-treating with his asshole friends, Nate and Erik.  They come upon the house of the late Mr. Xander, who apparently died the way he treated his neighbors.  Well, although his house is dark, there is a bowl of full-size candy bars on the porch.  “Take One” says the sign in the bowl, so what will happen if Phil, Nate, and Erik help themselves to more?

I love Halloween stories – prose and comics.  That said, “Take One” is an embarrassment.  The punishment does not fit the crime, and the level of violence is neither comic horror nor scary horror.  I have enjoyed some of Burnham's work (Nameless, Secret Wars: E is for Extinction) in the past, but “Take One” is lame horror trying to pass for clever.

On the other hand, I have to admit that Burnham's art and Lucas' colors are nicely atmospheric.  Too bad it's wasted on a wack-ass story.

“Shingo” by Dini & Langford, McCrea, Spicer, and Brosseau:
As the story opens, Sandy Clark is angry, determined, and desperate to find a party entertainer for her daughter, Fiona's birthday party.  It looks as if Fiona's dad, Tom Clark, has also come up short.  Enter Shingo; he (or it) is the party entertainer with the appetite to make any party unforgettable.

After the fumble of “Take One,” I didn't expect much from “Shingo.”  I know that many consider Paul Dini a “legend” for his work on the 1990s animated TV series, “Batman” a.k.a. “Batman: The Animated Series.”  However, I find his comic book work to be hit or miss or miss or mediocre.  I don't know how the collaboration between Dini and Langford worked, but “Shingo” is brilliant.

It is everything that comic horror or horror comedy should be.  It's crazy, wacky, satirical, farcical, droll, and witty and also have an batty monster.  The title boogey is “Shingo,” who is like a gleefully mean-spirited blend of PBS's “Barney,” the purple dinosaur from PBS' long-running “Barney & Friends” TV series, and a mangy “Teletubby” (from the British PBS import TV series, “The Teletubbies”).  The ending and the final-girl-heroes are the double cherries on top.

Artist John McCrea, a master of blending the comic, the violent, and the horrifying, makes this story sing.  Other artists could make this story work, but not as well as McCrea, who also gets some perfect coloring from Mike Spicer.

“Shingo” saves Creepshow #1, and my grade for this issue reflects “Shingo” and not so much “Take One.”  I think “Shingo” has the potential to be a good horror movie in the vein of director Michael Dougherty's 2015 film, Krampus.  And I would be remiss if I didn't say that Pat Brosseau's lettering throughout this issue is outstanding.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic horror comic book anthologies will want to read Creepshow.

[This comic book includes an afterword by Greg Nicotero, the executive producer of Shudder's “Creepshow.”]

"Briggs Land," New Brian Wood Comic Book Being Developed for TV

Brian Wood Launches New Comic Book Series “Briggs Land”, Writes and Produces Potential TV Adaptation

MILWAUKIE, OR— From New York Times best-selling writer Brian Wood (The Massive, Rebels, DMZ, Channel Zero) comes an electrifying crime saga relevant to current world events: Briggs Land.

The new ongoing comic series is set to begin in summer 2016, with interior artist Mack Chater (Ashes, Six), cover artist Tula Lotay (Rebels), and Hugo Award–nominated colorist Lee Loughridge bringing Wood’s script to life on the page.

Wood is also developing a television adaptation of the comic for AMC, serving as writer and executive producer, with producing partners John Hodges and Ravi Nandan at A24.

“AMC and I have been looking for the right thing to work on together for years, and it finally came in the form of Briggs Land, a crime drama set within a rural secessionist community. It’s the culmination of everything I’ve done in my twenty years as a comics creator, bringing socially conscious and politically charged themes to the page, putting some of the more unsettling elements of American culture under scrutiny,” noted Brian Wood. “With AMC I have a much larger canvas to work on, and the ability to design the overall story so the TV show and the comic add to each other.”

A24’s John Hodges and Ravi Nandan added, “We have been avid readers and rabid fans of Brian’s work for some time, and we are thrilled to collaborate with him on translating this exciting new property to the screen for AMC, which continues to define itself by championing bold and unique voices.”

The series tells the story of Briggs Land, nearly a hundred square miles of rural wilderness that harbors the largest and most secretive antigovernment secessionist movement in the United States. When matriarch Grace Briggs wrests control of the operation from her incarcerated husband, she sparks a war within the community—and her immediate family—that threatens to bring the full power of the federal government down on their heads.

Briggs Land #1 is in stores August 17, 2016.

Praise for other works by Brian Wood:

One of the best character writers in the industry.”—IGN

[Northlanders is] another creative victory for writer Wood, who’s quickly emerging as one [of] the medium’s premier scribes.”—Entertainment Weekly

2014 Primetime Emmy Awards - Complete Winners List

by Leroy Douresseaux

AMC's much-loved crime drama, “Breaking Bad” (which ended last year) won five awards at the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards, including for best drama series and lead actor.  “Modern Family” won its fifth consecutive award for best comedy series, one of three awards its won.  Other multiple winners included “Fargo,” Sherlock: His Last Vow, and “American Horror Story: Coven.”

To me, the entire ceremony seemed stuck in a loop that began three or four years ago.  Television is supposed to be in a new golden age.  However, all the buzzed-about shows like Game of Thrones, House of Cards, and Orange is the New Black lose to the same shows and performers who have been winning again and again for what seems like ages.  And “The Walking Dead” doesn't even get nominations in the major categories.  Oh, well...

The 66th Primetime Emmy Awards took place on Monday, August 25, 2014.  The ceremony aired on NBC and was hosted by Seth Meyers.

David Boyd Talks AMC's "The Walking Dead"

Some people who observe and write about television say that we are in a new golden age of TV.  Really, you need to have access to cable television to experience the best of TV, like AMC's critically lauded series, "Breaking Bad" and "Mad Men."  AMC once again brings us something different this fall with "The Walking Dead," a horror series based upon the long-running, black and white comic book series from writer Robert Kirkman that is published by Image Comics.

The AMC blog recently posted an interview with "The Walking Dead" cinematographer, David Boyd, which you can read here or here:

The cinematographer for Friday Night Lights and Firefly explains how you make daylight terrifying, compares The Walking Dead with Westerns and describes how Walkers are more dangerous than Reavers.

Q: How did you get involved with The Walking Dead?

A: Gosh, I don't even know. I've never worked with Frank Darabont before; I think they just looked at a bunch of reels and resumes and called me up. That was it.

Q: Had you ever had a desire to shoot a zombie series?

A: No, but you know I came up through the camera department in horror movies -- I crewed on Re-Animator, From Beyond, all those Empire Pictures movies. So I'm used to things like that.

Q: Horror movies usually take place at night. This series takes place mostly during the day. What are the challenges to that?

A: I think the challenges are to just get the idea that there's something to be afraid of around every corner. Because it's daylight you're not normally scared -- we're scared at night. But the levels of this are brilliantly laid out by Frank: The rooftop is a little safer than street level, street level is really terrifying, and below street level gets safer. So the scary places start to be the safe places, and the safe places start to be the scary places.

Q: What kind of visual tricks do you use to enhance this feeling of danger?

A: Just to play it as normal as possible, and prey on the fact that everyone knows that it's scary [Laughs]. We do tricks like we make it a little cooler -- like the warmth has disappeared from the world. And we use film so that the blues come out a little stronger, but I'm trying hard to keep it purely on a psychological level. Also, it's normal policy to make a camera perfectly level with the horizon, but not here. We don't do the obvious tilt left or right, but all things are a little bit off. My aim is to make it off-kilter enough to where there's just something subconsciously wrong with every image -- it starts to become a world where nothing's right.

Q: You're responsible for the show's lighting and color, but your source material is a black and white comic. What inspiration can you draw from it?

A: Oh all kinds. Everything comes from the comic book. And then Frank's taken it to its own place where it needs to be for us. Photographically all I've done is take most of the color out -- I've desaturated things and I'll bleed the color out. It's still a color image, it's still acceptable for television (because you can't put a black and white show on television any more) --

Q: You'd like to try, I take it?

A: I would love to try. I think we should just do it! Any convention out there I think we should put our foot through it. That said, we have to do it with color, so we'll just take the color out a bit, and bring it back within the realm of what was originally intended by Kirkman.

Q: Is that a situation where the decision to shoot on 16mm film is useful?

A: 16mm is the perfect choice. Regardless if we did it in HD or 35mm film, we'd add grain in the end to make it have this look. It calls up the language of what we're used to seeing in a horror film. George Romero's stuff was all grainy. It's like looking at a documentary, and you instantly get into the 16mm documentary world. And if you take those same cameras and put them into The Walking Dead, it begins to be a believable, real experience. We were looking at a day exterior the other day, and it actually becomes scary -- the moment when you realize it's possible to do something this frightful in broad daylight.

Q: You're used to shooting Westerns, having shot a few episodes of Deadwood and all of Firefly. Do you see any Western themes in The Walking Dead?

A: [Laughs] Yeah, I think that's encapsulated in Rick Grimes, right? I actually find myself thinking about Firefly from time to time on set. In both we made the choice not to embellish an image -- in my lexicon it would be not adding backlight, which is a product of working on a soundstage. In a practical location like where we are, we choose not to make it pretty, and to instead have it be a bunch of people on the edge of life.

Q: Speaking of Firefly, which is scarier: Reavers or Walkers?

A: You know those Reavers were awful scary, but these Walkers don't have a purpose other than to eat things. So they're slower, but they're more inexorable. They're just not going to stop, no matter what, so I'd go for the Walkers. The Walkers occupy my thoughts at night a lot more than the Reavers. The Reavers I could kind of laugh off. [Laughs]

"The Walking Dead" premieres this October.
