Oklahoma Film Critics Gives "Spotlight" its Best Picture Award
The Oklahoma Film Critics Circle (OFCC) is the statewide group of professional film critics. OFCC members are Oklahoma-based movie critics who write for print, broadcast and online outlets that publish or post reviews of current film releases.

Las Vegas Film Critics Named "Spotlight" Best Picture of 2015
The Las Vegas Film Critics Society (LVFCS) is a non-profit organization that describes itself as “progressive” and “dedicated to the advancement and preservation of film.” The LVFCS membership is comprised of “select” print, television and internet film critics in the Las Vegas area. The LVFCS presents its "Sierra" awards each year for the best in film, including The William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award, which is named for the late Academy Award winning actor.

National Board of Review Names "Mad Max: Fury Road" Best Film of 2015
The National Board of Review of Motion Pictures, which is made up of film enthusiasts, academics, students, and filmmakers, historically launches the movie awards season.
NBR President Annie Schulhof said, “2015 has been a banner year for popular cinema. We are thrilled to be awarding George Miller and Ridley Scott, two iconic filmmakers at the top of their game, while also celebrating the next generation of talent.”
The 2015 William K Everson Film History Award recipient is Cecilia De Mille Presley, the granddaughter of legendary director, Cecil B. DeMille. As Vice Chair of the National Film Preservation Foundation, she has devoted her life to film preservation. In honor of her grandfather’s legacy she has co-authored the book Cecil B. DeMille: The Art of the Hollywood Epic.
For 106 years, the National Board of Review has dedicated its efforts to the support of domestic and foreign cinema as both art and entertainment. This year, over 250 films (studio, independent, foreign-language, animated, and documentary) were viewed by this select group of film enthusiasts, filmmakers, professionals, academics, and students. These screenings were frequently followed by in-depth discussions with directors, actors, producers, and screenwriters. Voting ballots were tabulated by the accounting firm of Lutz and Carr, LLP.
The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Willie Geist, this year’s gala will take place on January 5, 2016 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City. Boston Online Film Critics Name "Mad Max: Fury Road" Best Picture of 2015
The Boston Online Film Critics Association (BOFCA) was founded in May 2012. According to the group, BOFCA fosters a community of web-based film critics and provides them with a supportive group of colleagues and a professional platform for their voices to be heard. They collect and link to their reviews every week at a website that also features original content by members, including filmmaker interviews and spotlights on Boston’s vital repertory film scene.
By widening professional membership to writers working in new media, BOFCA aims to encourage more diverse opinions in the field. The Boston Online Film Critics Association has gathered together critics writing for publications that collectively receive over 15 million impressions/page views per month. BOFCA is present on social media year-round with members’ film articles and essays.

"Creed Original Motion Picture Score" Now Available

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--WaterTower Music has announced the release of the Original Motion Picture Score to award-winning filmmaker Ryan Coogler’s Creed - the Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures, Warner Bros. Pictures and New Line Cinema film which explores a new chapter in the Rocky story, opening in theatres Wednesday, November 25, 2015.

The film reunites Coogler with his Fruitvale Station composer and songwriter Ludwig Goransson (Community, Happy Endings), with whom he has a long-standing working relationship. They met as students attending the graduate film program at the University of Southern California. The Swedish-born composer scored Coogler’s first short film, Locks (2009), before creating the music for Coogler’s 2013 Sundance Film Festival-winning feature, Fruitvale Station.
In Coogler’s second feature film, Creed, Ludwig Goransson’s dynamic 21-track score combines symphonic film scoring elements with modern production and beats, many brilliantly crafted from actual sounds in the boxing ring. To craft three of the tracks, “First Date,” “You’re A Creed,” and “You Can See The Whole Town From Here,” Goransson utilized interpolations of “Going The Distance” and “Gonna Fly Now” (Theme From Rocky) from the original Rocky movie. The original Rocky (1976) film won the 1977 Academy Award for Best Motion Picture and Rocky composer Bill Conti, along with Carol Connors, were Oscar-nominated for Best Music: Original Song for “Gonna Fly Now.”
Goransson was inspired by Conti’s iconic score to Rocky, calling it “The theme song of an underdog. What I wanted to do for Creed was create something that had as big of an impact on the movie as the Rocky theme did 40 years ago. I always feel encouraged by Ryan to think outside of the box and create something that I really believe in. Having it come to life and recording it with Ryan is a great reward.”
Coogler was “blown away” by Goransson’s blend of old and new ideas. “I think we landed on something really special,” the director stated.

PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Standing atop the Philadelphia Art Museum’s iconic steps, Philadelphia Mayor Michael A. Nutter proclaimed Wednesday, November 25th, 2015 “Creed” Day in honor of the upcoming film—opening that same day—which explores the next chapter in the “Rocky” saga. Joining Mayor Nutter to receive the official proclamation were Sylvester Stallone himself and fellow “Creed” stars Michael B. Jordan and Tessa Thompson, and the film’s writer/director, Ryan Coogler, and producer Irwin Winkler.
The film, which brings Rocky Balboa face-to-face with the son of his one-time rival and best friend, Apollo Creed, was shot in and around the City of Brotherly Love. The museum steps, and the statue of Rocky that stands at the bottom of them, can, in fact, be seen in “Creed.”

Review: "The Expendables 3" is Best When the Old Dogs Run

The Expendables 3 is a 2014 action movie from director Patrick Hughes. It is the second sequel to the 2010 film, The Expendables, and the third movie in the The Expendables film franchise. In The Expendables 3, team leader, Barney Ross, replaces his old teammates with some new blood for a showdown against a former friend turned arms dealer.
The Expendables 3 opens with the Expendables: Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) the leader; his right-hand man, Lee Christmas (Jason Statham); Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren); Toll Road (Randy Couture); and Hale Caesar (Terry Crews), on a new mission. They seek to rescue Doc (Wesley Snipes), one of the original Expendables.
With Doc in tow, the Expendables head to Mogadishu, Somalia to capture billionaire arms dealer, Victor Minns. However, Minns turns out to really be Conrad Stonebanks (Mel Gibson), who co-founded the Expendables before going rogue. After the Expendables' mission goes horrible wrong, Barney dismisses his current team. When he faces Stonebanks again, Ross plans on having a younger team that is also not connected to him in any personal or emotional way. But are the new Expendables: Thorn (Glen Powell), Luna (Ronda Rousey), Marlito (Victor Ortiz), and John Smilee (Kellan Lutz), really ready to take on an Expendables mission?
Released in the late summer of 2010, The Expendables was a surprising gem, an explosive action film that was a throwback to the old macho, testosterone-fueled action films of the 1980s. However, The Expendables was not some homage, parody, or sentimental recollection of action movie days gone by. As I said in my review of the first film, it was “an authentic ass-kicking, ass-stabbing, cap-popped-in-ass action movie...”
The Expendables 3 is full of old relic-type actors from the 1980s and 90s – stars who dominated the movie box office and one television star. The story toys with the idea that the old folks must make way for the new stars, but ultimately, it only plays with such a notion. Honestly, I want to see Sylvester Stallone, Mel Gibson, Wesley Snipes, Harrison Ford, and Arnold Schwarzenegger more than I want to see Ronda Rousey and Kellan Lutz (nothing against them).
I can't quite express how much I enjoyed seeing Kelsey Grammer (as Bonaparte), an actor about whom I have always had mixed feelings, and Harrison Ford (as Max Drummer). Ford is really showing his seven decades, but he's still cool. The Expendables 3 is at its best when it showed the old dogs in action, which is what made the original film such a treat. So, if there is a fourth film in this franchise, I want more aged beef and less fresh meat.

Review: "Escape Plan" Almost Old-Timey

Escape Plan is a 2013 action movie from director Mikael Håfström. The film stars Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger in a tale about a structural-security engineer incarcerated in the world’s most secret and secure prison and the escape plan he concocts with a fellow inmate.
Escape Plan opens in Bendwater Federal Penitentiary and introduces Ray Breslin (Sylvester Stallone). Breslin seems to be prisoner, but actually, he specializes in breaking out of maximum security prisons in order to test their reliability. With his partner, Lester Clark (Vincent D’Onofrio), Breslin owns the Los Angeles-based, independent security company, B&C Security, where Breslin studies, researches, and writes about prisons.
Breslin and Clark’s latest client is CIA Agent Jessica Mayer (Caitriona Balfe). Mayer offers Breslin double his free to break out of the International Detainee Unit, a top-secret prison where the world’s most dangerous criminals and terrorists are held, in order to see if it is really escape-proof. Breslin takes the identity of a Spanish terrorist named “Anthony Portos,” and prepares to be taken into custody.
The plan goes awry, and Breslin awakens in a glass cell located in a complex full of glass cells. Warden Willard Hobbes (Jim Caviezel) seems delighted to have “Portos” in his prison. Fellow inmate, Emil Rottmayer (Arnold Schwarzenegger), seems too eager to get to know him. Now, Breslin must use all his skills to escape, but this prison seems designed to foil his every move.
If you have to see an action movie, Escape Plan will do. The first half of the film is a nearly unwatchable bore, but the second half of the film is entertaining. The plot is stretched past the point of credulity in order for the resolution to make sense.
Escape Plan is a pale imitation of Sylvester Stallone and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s 1980s mindless flicks. From the mid-1980s to the early 1990s, Escape Plan would have been considered a cutting edge techno-thriller; now it’s a shame to see two such venerable stars in such a movie. Actually, it would make sense for this to be a modern Steven Seagal or even a Jean-Claude Van Damme straight-to-DVD movie. I must note that Schwarzenegger still looks good, but Stallone’s face is a post-op, plastic surgery wreck.
On the other hand, these two old action movie dogs can still deliver some of what we expect of them. Escape Plan gives plenty of Stallone brawling, and, in the movie’s last act, we get Schwarzenegger in a classic pose as he fires an automatic weapon, in a way that references him in The Terminator franchise. I did not ask much of this movie, and thanks to a clunky, listless first half, I almost did get what little I expected. I will say this: Escape Plan actually could have been better, so I would like to see Stallone and Schwarzenegger team-up again.

Homefront is a 2013 crime thriller and action movie from director Gary Fleder. The film is loosely based on the 2005 novel, Homefront, by author Chuck Logan. Homefront the movie focuses on a former DEA agent who moves to a small town, where he soon catches the attention of a local drug lord.
Homefront is a mean, gritty little bastard of a film. It is a true southern gothic in the tradition of such movies as White Lighting (a Burt Reynolds classic), Deliverance, and Walking Tall.
Widowed ex-solider Phil Broker (Jason Statham) works undercover for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA). After an operation goes bad, Broker retires, and he and his 10-year-old daughter, Maddy (Izabela Vidovic), move to the quiet Southern town of Rayville. However, the small town is riddled with drugs and violence, and, after Maddy gets into a fight at her new school, Broker discovers that Rayville is not as idyllic as it seems on the surface. Broker catches the attention of Gator Bodine (James Franco), a local drug lord with big ambitions. Those ambitions cause Gator to go into Broker’s past, which brings trouble for everyone.
It is too easy to mock a screenplay written by Sylvester Stallone; after all, he has been writing movie scripts for four decades. His Homefront screenplay is tightly written, perhaps a bit too tightly. The movie runs at about an hour-and-a-half of actual story time, which is too short for the plot and characters. Stallone introduces several characters and establishes them as potentially having a major impact on the story. Many of them, however, end up being used sparingly, especially the teacher Susan Hetch (Rachelle Lefevre), who might have romantic feelings for Broker. Cassie Bodine Klum (Kate Bosworth), as a character connected to both Broker and Bodine, has the most potential to improve the drama in Homefront, but, except for a few scenes, Cassie is underutilized.
What Stallone’s script gets right is the relationship between Broker and his daughter, Maddy. The film takes the time to establish how important both characters are to each other. The movie emphasizes two things: as a family that recently underwent loss, Broker and Maddy are in a fragile state and also that external threats are not the only things that can damage the family. Maddy is every bit as stubborn and determined as her father, and her love for him won’t deter her from confronting him. So when the bad guys start attacking, the audience will buy into the threat to the family because the film made the bond and relationship between Broker and Maddy seem genuine and honest.
Fear not, Jason Statham fans; our guy gets to kick ass and pop caps. Director Gary Fleder and film editor Padraic McKinley largely eschew CGI god-tech and instead, offer old-fashioned, no-gloss gunfights that will glue your attention to the screen. The bone-crunching, ball-rupturing, face-smashing fights are short and to the point, and I found myself re-watching them.
Homefront is one of the better Jason Statham vehicles because his character seems more grounded in realism. Phil Broker is both susceptible to being hurt and has something to lose. And because this movie was not a box office success, we likely won’t get to see Statham as Broker in another film – a pity.

The Golden Raspberry Award or, as it is best known, the Razzie Award, is basically the opposite of the Academy Awards (the Oscars). This award honors the worst achievements in film in a calendar year, as determined by the paid membership of the Golden Raspberry Award Foundation.
Unlike the Oscars, BAFTAs, Golden Globes, and other awards, black and African-American performers and filmmakers are well represented in the Razzies. Razzie voters seem to have a particular hatred for Tyler Perry. That is why I often think of the Razzies as nothing more than a hater fest for jealous bitches and envious ho’s. I hear charges of nepotism concerning Will Smith and his son, Jaden, around the movie After Earth. Nepotism in Hollywood: is that a new thing? Really?

Warner Bros. Pictures’ “Grudge Match” stars award-winning movie legends Oscar® winner Robert De Niro (“Raging Bull,” “Silver Linings Playbook”) and Oscar® nominee Sylvester Stallone (the “Rocky” films, “The Expendables”) as old boxing rivals who come out of retirement for one final match. Peter Segal (“Get Smart,” “The Longest Yard”) directs the comedy.
De Niro and Stallone play Billy “The Kid” McDonnen and Henry “Razor” Sharp, two local Pittsburgh fighters whose fierce rivalry put them in the national spotlight. Each had scored a victory against the other during their heyday, but in 1983, on the eve of their decisive third match, Razor suddenly announced his retirement, refusing to explain why but effectively delivering a knock-out punch to both their careers. Thirty years later, boxing promoter Dante Slate Jr., seeing big dollar signs, makes them an offer they can’t refuse: to re-enter the ring and settle the score once and for all. But they may not have to wait that long: on their first encounter in decades, their long-festering feud erupts into an unintentionally hilarious melee that instantly goes viral. Review: "Judge Dredd" Simply a Stallone Movie

The subject of this movie review is Judge Dredd, a 1995 science fiction movie starring Sylvester Stallone. The film is based on the comic strip Judge Dredd, which appears in the British science fiction comics anthology, 2000 AD. The title character, Judge Dredd, first appeared in 2000 AD #2 (March 5, 1977) and was created by writer John Wagner and artist Carlos Ezquerra. Judge Dredd the movie is set in a dystopian future, where Dredd, the most famous judge, is falsely convicted of a crime.
In the 3rd millennium, much of Earth is a desert wasteland. Most humans reside in one of the huge Mega-Cities. There, the justice system is maintained by a corps of Judges who are police officer, judge, jury, and executioner – basically a cop with instant field judiciary powers. In Mega-City One, the most famous is Judge Joseph Dredd (Sylvester Stallone), best known as simply Judge Dredd.
Dredd’s brother, Rico (Armand Assante), and the corrupt Judge Griffin (Jurgen Prochnow) hatch a plot to frame Judge Dredd for the murder of the muck-racking journalist, Vardas Hammond and his wife. After the prison transport ship that is taking him to a penal colony crashes, Dredd and another prisoner, Herman “Fergie” Ferguson (Rob Schneider), return to Mega-City One to set things straight and stop a conspiracy.
The people behind Judge Dredd the movie basically took characters and situations from the Judge Dredd comics series. Then, they used them to make a Sylvester Stallone movie, specifically a Sylvester Stallone science fiction/action movie. Once you accept that this is not really a Judge Dredd the comic strip movie, then, you can decide if you like this Sylvester Stallone science fiction/action movie.
I do like it. Sure, it is a moronic 1980s action movie, feeling a bit behind the times because of its mid-1990s release date, but it is harmless fun. There are some things that stand out as being good about Judge Dredd. For one, it has a sense of humor. The second thing is Armand Assante’s performance. He does a slight impersonation of Stallone, without mocking him, but it is enough to convince viewers that his character, Rico, is the brother of Dredd – as played by Stallone.
The production values: art direction, sets, costumes, etc. are unexpectedly good and surprisingly colorful. The visual effects are also good, although dated. These unexpected things make Judge Dredd a bit of a surprise. I remember not liking this movie the first time I saw it, but now, I have to admit that I enjoyed it.

Review: "The Expendables 2" is Darker, But Still Fun

The Summer 2010 movie season offered an unexpected treat, The Expendables, an explosive action film co-written, directed, and starring Sylvester Stallone. It was a throwback to the macho, testosterone-fueled, action flicks of the 1980s.
The subject of this movie review is its sequel, The Expendables 2, a 2012 action movie from director Simon West. Like its predecessor, The Expendables 2 is not an homage to or parody of action movie days-gone-by. It is an authentic ass-kicking, ass-stabbing, cap-popped-in-ass action movie, but it is a little darker and more downbeat than the original.
Barney Ross (Sylvester Stallone) is still the leader of the Expendables, an elite band of mercenaries. Ross and his right-hand man/knife specialist, Lee Christmas (Jason Statham); martial artist Yin Yang (Jet Li); unstable Gunner Jensen (Dolph Lundgren); demolitions expert Toll Road (Randy Couture); weapons specialist Hale Caesar (Terry Crews); and the new guy, sniper Billy the Kid (Liam Hemsworth), charge into Nepal on a rescue mission. It is a success, of course, but Ross and the Expendables have a debt to pay. So says secretive CIA agent, “Mr. Church” (Bruce Willis).
Soon, the Expendables are escorting one of Church’s operatives, Maggie Chan (Nan Yu), to a crash site in the Gasak Mountains, Albania. The item that the Expendables are trying to retrieve is also the target of Jean Vilain (Jean-Claude Van Damme), the leader of a large mercenary band called the Sangs. After one of the Expendables is brutally murdered, Ross leads his team into hostile territory on a mission of revenge.
Early in The Expendables 2, even with the crazy opening in Nepal, it is obvious that this is a darker movie. This sequel replaces the cartoonish and stylish violence with more grit. It seems that just as many, if not more people are casually shot and also shot to pieces, but there is something meaner here. Perhaps, it is this film’s chilly shooting locations in Bulgaria, or maybe it’s the story.
More than the original film, The Expendables 2 is a Sylvester Stallone movie, and the theme, or at least emphasis, is that his character, Barney Ross, has come to a morbid conclusion about his life. He’s a tired, old soldier, but this dog still has a lot of fight in him. But Ross is simply determined not to drag any new people into the meat grinder that is his place of work and profession. The other Expendables are largely in the background compared to the first movie, which is hugely disappointing to me. Still, wise-ass Jason Statham gets many opportunities to spread his wings of sarcasm, and he has some cool, solo martial arts fight scenes. That’s worth the price of admission.
Stallone and some of his costars are starting to look real hoary because of plastic surgery. In fact, there is enough plastic surgery between some of them that it would not be too snarky to say that they are starting to look like action figure toys. Anyway, if you liked the first movie, you’ll likely like the second. The Expendables 2 is good enough to make me ready to go on a third mission with Ross and company.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dark Castle Entertainment will partner with IM Global and After Dark Films on director Walter Hill’s upcoming action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, it was announced today jointly by the three companies.
The film is scheduled to begin production on location in Louisiana later this month and will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures, under its ongoing arrangement with Dark Castle.
Based on the graphic novel Bullet to the Head, written by Matz and illustrated by Colin Wilson, it tells the story of a New Orleans hitman (Stallone) and a New York City cop who form an alliance to bring down the killers of their respective partners.
Joel Silver, Chairman of Dark Castle Entertainment, previously produced the Stallone films “Demolition Man” and “Assassins.” He says, “Sylvester Stallone is an iconic action star the world over and I’m thrilled to be working with him again. I look forward to joining with IM Global and After Dark in bringing this exciting new story to the screen.”

Silver’s previous creative collaborations with veteran director Hill include the box-office hit “48 Hours,” “Warriors” and HBO’s long-running “Tales from the Crypt.”
The new film, a Warner Bros. Pictures presentation, in association with Dark Castle Entertainment, IM Global and After Dark Films, also features rising star Sung Kang (“Fast Five,” “Ninja Assassin”) in a key supporting role. Additionally serving as producers will be Alexandra Milchan, Miles Millar, Alfred Gough, Kevin King-Templeton and Andrew Rona. Stuart Ford, Brian Kavanaugh-Jones, Deepak Nayar, Courtney Solomon, Allan Zeman and Steve Richards will executive produce.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Dark Castle Entertainment will partner with IM Global and After Dark Films on director Walter Hill’s upcoming action thriller starring Sylvester Stallone, it was announced today jointly by the three companies.
The film is scheduled to begin production on location in Louisiana later this month and will be distributed domestically by Warner Bros. Pictures, under its ongoing arrangement with Dark Castle.
