The Las Vegas Film Critics Society (LVFCS) is a non-profit organization that describes itself as “progressive” and “dedicated to the advancement and preservation of film.” The LVFCS membership is comprised of “select” print, television and internet film critics in the Las Vegas area. The LVFCS presents its "Sierra" awards each year for the best in film, including The William Holden Lifetime Achievement Award, which is named for the late Academy Award winning actor.

Review: New "Fantastic Four" is Fantastically Problematic

Fantastic Four is a 2015 superhero movie and science fiction film from director Josh Trank. It is the third film in 20th Century Fox's Fantastic Four film franchise, and it is also a reboot of that franchise. Fantastic Four 2015 follows four young people whose physical forms are changed in shocking ways after being exposed to energy from an alternate and dangerous universe.
Reed Richards (Miles Teller) and Ben Grimm (Jamie Bell) have been friends since childhood, when Ben started helping Reed build his prototype teleportation device. It is in high school when they attract the attention of Professor Franklin Storm (Reg E. Cathey), who is the director of the Baxter Foundation, a government-sponsored research institute for young prodigies.
Reed joins the foundation and begins working with Storm's adopted daughter, Susan “Sue” Storm (Kate Mara), and eventually his son, Johnny Storm (Michael B. Jordan). Reed also gets to work with Professor Storm's wayward protege, Victor Von Doom (Toby Kebbell). Together, this quartet builds a device called the “Quantum Gate,” which opens a way to “Zero,” a planet in an parallel dimension. Awaiting those who travel to “Zero,” however, is energy that will change them in unimaginable and fantastic ways.
Fantastic Four isn't a good movie, but it isn't a terrible movie. It is like flavorless chewing gum. The gum might start with a lot of promise, but pretty soon you're just chewing for the sake of chewing and the flavor is gone. That is this Fantastic Four reboot. It starts off with promise, but pretty soon, the story seems to be just going through the motions, and I was simply watching it out of habit, waiting for the end credits to roll.
Fantastic Four 2015 is mostly build-up. In some ways, it is like a long teaser for another movie, the real Fantastic Four (or “FF”) movie that is “coming soon.” What we get with this new movie is something akin to a prologue or an overly long introductory act. In fact, this film's big villain, called “Doom,” rather than Doctor Doom, does not show up until the last 10 or 15 minutes of the movie.
I think that there are a kernel or two of good ideas in this new Fantastic Four that could become something good... in a second movie... produced by an entirely different group of people. I think that the special effects for Reed Richards' (Mr. Fantastic) stretching powers is much better than it was in the 2005 and 2007 Fantastic Four films. Ben Grimm (The Thing) looks better in this reboot than in the earlier films. Hard as it is to believe, Kate Mara as Sue Storm is worse than Jessica Alba as Sue in the first two films. I like Michael B. Jordan, but his Johnny Storm (Human Torch) is stiff compared to Chris Evans' rascally Human Torch from the earlier films.
Overall, director Josh Trank has made a Fantastic Four film that is actually less entertaining than Tim Story's uneven 2005 and 2007 FF films. I wouldn't recommend this even to comic book fans. It is so mediocre and uninspiring that it isn't even awful enough to be an enjoyable “bad movie.” It is like the ultimate average and bland film. This Fantastic Four makes it clear that 20th Century Fox should just stop making Fantastic Four movies.

Austin, Texas – The South by Southwest® (SXSW®) Film Conference and Festival announced the world premiere of Everybody Wants Some as its Opening Night film for the 23rd edition of SXSW Film on March 11, 2016 in Austin, Texas. Set in the world of 1980s college life, Everybody Wants Some is a comedy, directed and written by Richard Linklater, that follows a group of college baseball players as they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Get ready for the best weekend ever.
Richard Linklater is a world-class filmmaker who put Austin on the map. He creates consistently stellar work including Slacker, Dazed and Confused, Waking Life, Scanner Darkly, School of Rock, Bernie, Fast Food Nation, the Midnight trilogy and last year’s Academy Award®-nominated Boyhood. Linklater also serves as the Artistic Director for the Austin Film Society, which he founded in 1985.

Everybody Wants Some features an ensemble cast of Will Brittain, Zoey Deutch, Ryan Anthony Guzman, Tyler Hoechlin, Blake Jenner, Glen Powell and Wyatt Russell. The film is written and directed by Richard Linklater and produced by Megan Ellison of Annapurna Pictures, Richard Linklater and Ginger Sledge. Paramount Pictures will release the film on April 15, 2016.
Everybody Wants Some is designated as a SXsports film, which means that Film, Interactive, Gold, and Platinum badges all have access to attend the screening.

The Broadcast Film Critics Association (BFCA) announced the nominees for the 21st Annual Critics’ Choice Movie Awards, Monday, December 14, 2015. The winners will be revealed at the Critics’ Choice Movie Awards on January 17, 2016 at the Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. The award ceremony, hosted by T.J. Neil Gaiman's "How to Talk to Girls at Parties" Becomes a Graphic Novel
In June 2016, Dark Horse Books will be pleased to offer How to Talk to Girls at Parties, a brilliant new graphic novel adaptation of an award-winning short story from Neil Gaiman—one of the most celebrated authors of our time—by award-winning artists Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá.
Originally published in Neil Gaiman’s Fragile Things: Short Fiction and Wonders, “How to Talk to Girls at Parties” quickly became a celebrated work, receiving a nomination for a 2007 Hugo Award for Best Short Story and winning the Locus Award for Best Short Story the same year.
Now Moon and Bá are set to adapt the Gaiman story they were born to draw in a sumptuous graphic novel that is not to be missed.
“They have a storytelling aesthetic where [depicting] body language is everything. The story is all about what’s in the narrators’ heads, so it can be very hard to do that in comics. It’s incredibly enjoyable to write a story and see them make it real,” said Neil Gaiman in an exclusive interview with Publishers Weekly.

The 88th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Thursday, January 14, 2016, at 5:30 a.m. PT at the Academy’s Samuel Goldwyn Theater in Beverly Hills.
The 88th Oscars® will be held on Sunday, February 28, 2016, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® in Hollywood, and will be televised live by the ABC Television Network at 7 p.m. ET/4 p.m. PT. Review: "Mad Max: Fury Road" is the Real Fast and Furious

Mad Max: Fury Road is a 2015 post-apocalyptic action film from director George Miller. Written by Miller, Brendan McCarthy, and Nico Lathouris, Fury Road is the fourth film in the Mad Max film franchise, which began with the 1979 Australian film, Mad Max. Actor Tom Hardy replaces actor Mel Gibson as the title character; Gibson portrayed Max in the franchise's first three movies. Mad Max: Fury Road follows a warrior who escapes with a group of female prisoners and takes them on a search for her homeland, with the aid of a drifter named Max.
Mad Max: Fury Road is set some years after a nuclear holocaust has left civilization collapsed and the world a desert wasteland. One oasis is The Citadel, which is ruled over by the tyrannical Immortan Joe (Hugh Keays-Byrne), who has an army of “War Boys” to carry out his orders. Early in the story, Joe sends one of his lieutenants, Imperator Furiosa (Charlize Theron), in an armored truck to collect gasoline. After she goes off-route, Joe realizes that Furiosa has escaped with his five wives: Angharad (Rosie Huntington-Whiteley), Capable (Riley Keough), Cheedo (Courtney Eaton), The Dag (Abbey Lee), and Toast (Zoë Kravitz).
Immortan Joe leads his entire army in pursuit of Furiosa and her armored truck, a “war rig.” A sick War Boy named, Nux (Nicholas Hoult), seeks to make his name stopping Furiosa. But the fate of Furiosa and her fellow escapees may rest in the hands of a drifter recently caught by the War Boys, the former “Road Warrior,” Max Rockatansky (Tom Hardy).
If Mad Max: Fury Road is not the best genre film of the year, it is one of the best and sits near the top. Compared to its summer action movie competitors, Fury Road features relatively little use of CGI and other computer-generated special effects. What is even more surprising is that the hero of Fury Road is really a female character, Charlize Theron's Imperator Furiosa. Tom Hardy's Max is, at best, a partner, if not a kind of sidekick.
The Furiosa-Max dynamic allows Miller and his co-writers to drive this film with themes of survival and redemption, rather than with male-centered, goal-oriented themes like revenge or the pursuit of something (like gas and guns). Thus, Fury Road seems more hopeful than the other films in this franchise, which were about the desperation to survive. In fact, this film's thoughtful approach to both character and to the drama of the big “Fury Road” chase, allows even an ostensible villain, Nux the War Boy, to have an arc of redemption.
I could talk more about the performances, the characters, and the drama, which are all good, but I would rather talk about the action. Mad Max: Fury Road is a whirling dervish of action sequences and scenes. I see, at least, a best editing Oscar nomination in Fury Road's future, and some love from whatever awards that are given for the men and women who perform stunt work in movies. The road races and vehicle pursuits surpass even the amazing chases in 1981's Mad Max 2 (known as The Road Warrior for its 1982 U.S. release). The action is so good that it makes Fury Road seem like one long action scene, which it most certainly is not.
Mad Max: Fury Road is one of those films that has to be seen to be believed. I don't think I can convey in a review how awesome an action movie it is and how surprisingly good a post-apocalyptic drama it also is. Director George Miller proves once and for all that he is one of the great film directors and that he only gets better with age.
