Review: WAITING FOR GUFFMAN (Remembering Catherine O'Hara)

The Canadian and American comedian, actress, and screenwriter, Catherine O'Hara, died Friday, January 30, 2026 at the age of 71. During her prolific 50-year career in film and television, O'Hara appeared in four mock-documentary films (known by the term, “mockumentaries”) directed by Christopher Guest. I have seen three of them: Waiting for Guffman (1996), Best in Show (2000), and A Mighty Wind (2003). I wrote reviews for A Mighty Wind and Waiting for Guffman, but only the former is posted on my Negromancer blog. In memory of O'Hara, I am finally posting Waiting for Guffman.

Waiting for Guffman is a 1996 American mockumentary comedy film from director Christopher Guest. The film's title is a reference to Samuel Beckett's play, Waiting for Godot (1952). The film focuses on an aspiring director and his marginally talented amateur cast who go overboard with their small-town musical production because a prominent Broadway figure will attend the opening night performance.

Waiting for Guffman is seen through the eyes of a documentary filmmaker (who never speaks nor is seen on camera). He records the activities in and around the town of Blaine, Missouri, the “Stool Capitol of the United States” (as in “foot stool”), as the citizens prepare for the town’s 150th birthday celebration.

The town council decides that the best way to celebrate is to top off the day of festivities with an original amateur stage production, entitled “Red, White and Blaine.” The council chooses a transplanted New Yorker, Corky St. Clair (Christopher Guest), to stage the production, but Corky has delusions of making “Red, White and Blaine” a grand production. The cast of his production includes some of the town’s wannabe performers, a collection of eccentrics with more desire than skill, and their lack of theatrical ability is obvious to everyone but them. However, the stakes for the production are raised even higher when a Broadway theatre critic, Mort Guffman, accepts Corky’s invitation to see the opening night of the show.

Waiting for Guffman was the first of Christopher Guest’s mockumentaries. A “mockocumentary” is a term used to describe mock or spoof documentaries. The most famous example of such a film is This is… Spinal Tap, of which Guest was a star and co-writer. Other examples include Bob Roberts, CB4, and Fear of a Black Hat. Whereas documentaries study or take not of real people, real events, and real life, mockumentaries take a look at fiction peoples, places, and things. Since Waiting for Guffman, Guest has directed two other well-received mockumentaries, Best in Show (2000) and A Mighty Wind (2003), and he has another, For Your Consideration, due Fall 2006 (as of this writing).

Waiting for Guffman is mildly entertaining, and is meant to spoof local theatre and the desire of small town folks to be in the spotlight. However, other than for a spot here and there, the characters aren’t nearly as interesting as real people. In fact, a real documentary about local and small town theaters would be much more interesting. Guest reportedly filmed over 60 hours of film from which he cut into an 84 minute movie, and I wouldn’t be surprised to find that some of the funniest (if not funniest) scenes and material were left out of the movie for the sake of time and the narrative. Almost all the dialogue is adlibbed, so what the film basically has topnotch sketch comedy actors misusing their talent to create comedy on the spur of the moment. I was surprised how unfunny or only slightly funny I found some of my favorite comic actors to be in this flick. I generally enjoy the work of actors and comedians: Eugene Levy, Fred Willard, and Catherine O’Hara, but, here, they come across as too flat to me.

What makes Guffman worth watching is Christopher Guest himself. He’s mesmerizing and hilarious in his portrayal of Corky St. Clair’s artistic pretensions and self-importance. Guest is deliciously sly in his droll delivery, and he makes us believe that Corky certainly takes himself seriously – all the time. As comedies go, it would be hard to forget Corky, and even if I did, I’d be instantly delighted once I’d encounter him again. Waiting for Guffman is certainly worth watching, especially for those who want something different in their comedies. It has moments of inspired brilliance, and the theatrical production, “Red, White and Blaine,” is a must-see.

SCANDAL - From APNews: The Associated Press lets you know "What to know about the civil rights charges Don Lemon faces for covering church protest in Minnesota" Lemon, the former CNN anchor, is among nine people, including another journalist (Georgia Fort), have been charged with violating two different federal laws in connection with the protest that interrupted a worship service at the "Cities Church" in St. Paul.

AWARDS - From THR: The nominations for the 2026 / 79th British Academy Film Awards (BAFTAs) have been announced. "One Battle After Another" leads with 14 nominations. The awards will be handed out at ceremony held on February 22, 2026 at Royal Festival Hall in London.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel: Director Daniel Goldhaber’s “Faces of Death” remake, which has been ready to go since 2024 and was shot in 2023, will reportedly get a nationwide release on April 10, 2026. The film is supposedly a remake of director John Alan Schwartz's notorious 1978 film of the same name.

DISNEY - From Variety: Hulu has set the premiere date for “The Testaments,” the follow-up to the streamer’s hit series adaptation of “The Handmaid’s Tale.” The series will see its first three episodes drop on on April 8,2026 with new episodes dropping weekly thereafter. Like “The Handmaid’s Tale,” the new show is based on author Margaret Atwood's 1985 novel of the same name.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro: The winner of the 1/23 to 1/25/2026 weekend box office is Amazon/MGM Studios' "Mercy" with an estimated take of 11.1 million dollars.

O'Hara first gained prominence for starring in the Canadian sketch-comedy television series, "SCTV." Her most famous film role may be that of "Kate McCallister," the mother of actor Macauley Culkin's character, "Kevin McCallister," in the blockbuster Christmas film, "Home Alone," and it's sequel, "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" (1992). She also appeared in director Christopher Guest's "mockumentary" films: "Waiting for Guffman" (1996), "Best in Show" (2000), and "A Mighty Wind" (2003), and "For Your Consideration" (2006). Other notable film roles include "Beetlejuice" (1988) and its sequel "Beetlejuice Beetlejuice" (2024). O'Hara was nominated for ten Primetime Emmy Awards, and she won twice, including "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy" for her role in the Canadian sitcom, "Schitt's Creek."

From THR: American television actor, ordained minister, and Vietnam veteran, Demond Wilson, has died at the age of 79, Friday, January 30, 2026. Wilson is best known for playing "Lamont Sanford," the son of the late actor Redd Foxx's "Fred G. Sanford," in the former NBC sitcom, "Sanford and Son" (1972-77). Wilson also starred in two short-lived sitcoms, CBS' "Baby... I'm Back" (1978) and ABC's "The New Odd Couple" (1982-83). Wilson served in the United State Army from 1966 to 1968 and served in Vietnam, where he was wounded and earned a "Purple Heart."

From Deadline: Jamaican drummer, songwriter, producer, and recording artist, Sly Dunbar, has died at the age of 73, Monday, January 26, 2026. Dunbar is best known for his work with the late Robbie Shakespeare (1953-2021) to form the reggae rhythm section known as "Sly and Robbie." The hugely influential duo was known for their work with such reggae artists as Peter Tosh, Bunny Wailer, and "Black Uhuru." Their work extended beyond reggae to such rock and pop acts as Bob Dylan, Mick Jagger, Grace Jones, Cyndi Lauper, and Yoko Ono. Sly and Robbie also released numerous albums of their own, beginning with 1985's "Language Barrier." For his work, Sly was nominated for 15 Grammy Awards, winning twice.

From THR: The nominations for the 2026 / 98th Academy Awards have been announced. Director Ryan Coogler's Sinners leads with history-making 16 nominations, including for "Best Picture," "Best Director" (Coogler), and Best Actor (Michael B. Jordan). The winners will be announced March 15, 2026.

From Truthout: Directed by Andrew Jarecki and Charlotte Kaufman, the 2025 documentary film, "The Alabama Solution," is one of five nominees in the category of "Best Documentary Feature." The film chronicles the horrific conditions inside the state of Alabama's prisons. The incarcerated men who produced footage for "The Alabama Solution" were abruptly transferred to solitary this month (January).

From TheGuardian: Director Ryan Coogler's "Sinners" earned 16 Oscar nominations at the 98th Academy Awards, the most in the 98-year history of the awards. The previous record is 14, held by "All About Eve" (1950), "Titanic" (1997), and "La La Land" (2016).

From Variety: With her fifth Oscar nomination, for "Best Costume Designer" for "Sinners," Ruth E. Carter is now the most Oscar-nominated Black woman in the history of the Academy Awards.

From Truthout: One of the five nominees for this year's "Best International Feature" Academy Award is "The Voice of Hind Rajab." Representing the nation of Tunisia, the film is a mix of drama and documentary, and it tells the story of Hind Rajab, a five-year old girl who was killed January 29, 2024 by Israel Defense Forces (IDF) during the Israeli invasion of the Gaza strip.

From YahooEntertainment: At the age of 73, actor Delroy Lindo finally gets his first Oscar nomination - in the category of "Best Supporting Actor" for "Sinners." The actor also talks about being "profoundly disappointed" by previous Academy snubs.

From EW: Oscar-nominee Kirsten Dunst is not pleased that her husband, previous Oscar-nominee, Jesse Plemons, was not Oscar-nominated for his work in the recent acclaimed film, "Bugonia."

From AlbuquerqueJournal: A judge has ordered director and Emmy-winning actor Timothy Busfield released from jail as he awaits trial on child sex abuse charges.

From CBS: Director and Emmy-winning actor, Timothy Busfield (Thirtysomething), surrendered to New Mexico authorities in answer to an arrest warrant for child sex abuse charges. The complaint involves twin brothers who claim that Busfield molested them on the set on the former Fox suspense drama, "The Cleaning Lady," for which Busfield was a series director.

From NBCNews: Already facing charges related to claims that he molested twin brothers on the set of a TV series where he was a director, Emmy-winner Timothy Busfield is also facing accusations that he kissed and inappropriately touch a 16-year-old girl years ago.

From THR: In the wake of his arrest on child sex abuse charges, Timothy Busfield finds himself without a talent agency The Santa Monica-based agency, "Innovative Artists," has ceased working actor and director.

From Deadline: Daniel Stern ("Home Alone") is no longer part of ABC‘s comedy pilot, "Do You Want Kids?," which is set to star Rachel Bloom and Rory Scovel. ABC and the producing studio, 20th Television, will be recasting the series-regular role that Stern was supposed to play. Stern was recently arrested on a misdemeanor charge of soliciting a prostitute.

“Supernatural” created by Eric Kripke

"Supernatural" was an American television series created by Eric Kripke. It debuted on The WB broadcast network on September 13, 2005 and subsequently became part of successor network, The CW. The series ended November 19, 2020, after a total of 15 seasons and 327 episodes. “Supernatural” starred Jared Padalecki as “Sam Winchester” and Jensen Ackles as “Dean Winchester,” two brothers who hunt demons, ghosts, monsters, and other supernatural beings.

DC Comics and its Wildstorm imprint published four Supernatural comic book miniseries over a period from 2007 to 2011. Now, Dynamite Entertainment has the license and has launched a new series, Supernatural. It is written by Greg Pak; drawn by Eder Messias and others; colored by Ellie Wright; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry. According to Dynamite, this new comic book is set between Supernatural Seasons 1 and 2, and finds Dean and Sam Winchester forced to take on a new threat before they can continue their hunt for the demon that killed their mother, Mary Winchester.

Supernatural #3 opens in Erie, Arizona where two live action-role players, Johannes and Orville, get in deeper than at least Orville expected. A week later, the “monster hunters,” Sam and Dean arrive and have to make a stop because of car trouble.

Now, a group of Johannes and Orville's friends go looking in the woods for their pals, and face a mysterious attack. Luckily, Sam and Dean are tracking them and comes to the rescue. In this case, however, the weapons this role-players face are real, and the Winchester brothers are about to suffer than own supernatural hassles.

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. Supernatural #3 is one of the latest, and it is the second “Supernatural” comic book that I have read.

I did not read any of the DC/Wildstorm's Supernatural comic books, and I only watched the first few seasons of “Supernatural.” When I tried to rejoin it later in the series run, I just couldn't reconnect. Eventually, I'll try streaming it... all 15 seasons...

Supernatural #3 is an interesting but not really special issue. It is the first misstep in this series for writer, Greg Pak, but, as this seems to be the first part of a story line, I'll wait to see what the fourth issue offers before making a final judgment.

Artists Eder Messias, Pasquale Qualano, Alessandro Ranaldi, Vincenzo Federici, and Gerardo Gambone continue to create creepy moods that make this series feel genuine to its source material, the television series, “Supernatural.” Ellie Wright's colors capture the garish supernatural elements that appear in this tale, while letterer Jeff Eckleberry creates a kind of soundtrack for this tale of the supernatural gone amok.

Dear readers, let's keep following this iteration of the adventures of the Winchester brothers.

Archie and the Gang in “Chill Out!”

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character. In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics frequently publishes holiday themed one-shot comic books featuring Archie's characters (sometimes referred to as “Archie and the Gang”). The latest is Archie Christmas Spectacular, 2025 edition. It features one new story and five reprint stories. The new story is entitled, “Chill Out!” This five-page tale is written by Dan Parent; drawn by (pencils) and Bob Smith (inks); colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

Archie and the Gang in “Chill Out!”:

Archie and the Gang are headed to the North Pole. It all starts when Santa Claus' daughter, Noelle Claus, invites Archie to the North Pole High Christmas Dance. This time, however, Betty and Veronica are not the two females fighting for that first dance with Archie. They are Noelle and Sugarplum, a fairy who is one of Santa's holiday helpers.

Still, Betty, Veronica, Reggie, and Jughead won't be left behind, especially because Veronica has been invited by a new-look Jingles the Elf. So what will happen when the gang from Riverdale learns that high school is the same everywhere – even the North Pole?

THE LOWDOWN: I have been reading comic books, on and off, for decades. I have sporadically read Archie Comics titles over that time. For many years now, Archie's marketing department has been sending PDF copies of some of their titles for review. Archie Christmas Spectacular – 2025 edition – is the latest.

I have missed some emails sent to me by Archie Comics' marketing department. One of those emails included the review PDF for Archie Comics Spectacular. I am glad that I found it because I enjoyed this issue's new story, “Chill Out!” I usually like the Archie Comics short stories created by writer-artist Dan Parent, and this one is quite nice. It captures the quintessential Archie-Betty-Veronica love triangle with a delightful new twist.

The rest of the Christmas stories in this issue star a number of lesser known Archie Comics characters. There is a story starring “Kardak the Mystic,” who received a superhero reboot in 2024's Kardak the Mystic #1. Golden Age Archie Andrews' contemporary, “Wilbur Wilkin,” appears in three stories. “Sabrina the Teenage Witch” also leads a tale featuring Archie and the Gang.

Dear readers, I will always recommend classic-style Archie Comics, especially when it comes in Christmas packaging – anytime of the year. So, yes: I am suggesting you read Archie Christmas Spectacular – 2025 edition.

DARTH MAUL - From StarWars: Disney+ has released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming Lucasfilm animated series, "Star Wars: Maul - Shadow Lord." The series set for an April 6th debut on Disney+.

COMICS - From BleedingCool: Marvel Comics unveils "Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge - Echoes Of The Empire," a five-issue comic book miniseries launching April 2026. Set on Batuu, the comic connects to Disney’s "Galaxy’s Edge Park," and also expands the "Star Wars" timeline with classic heroes. Readers should expect appearances from Luke Skywalker, Leia, and Chewbacca facing the Empire over a dangerous relic. It is written by Ethan Sacks and drawn by Jethro Morales and Roi Mercado.

DAVE FILONI - From TheWrap: As Kathleen Kennedy steps down as President of Lucasfilm and Dave Filoni becomes Chief Creative Officer comes a report that Filoni did not like Lucasfilm's Emmy-winning hit, "Andor." Lynwen Brennan is also announced as co-president.

From Forbes: Reports state that Lucasfilm, Chief Creative Office (CCO), Dave Filoni, will become president of Lucasfilm when current president Kathleen Kennedy steps down. A director, producer, and screenwriter, Filoni is known for directing the 2008 animated film, "Star Wars: Clone Wars" and the upcoming live-action film, "The Mandalorian and Grogu." Filoni was also the writer, director, and executive producer on Lucasfilm/Disney+ television series like "The Mandalorian," "The Book of Boba Fett," and "Ahsoka."

COMICS - From BleedingCool: "Star Wars: Shadow of Maul" is a five-issue comic book miniseries that will act as a prequel to upcoming Disney+ animated series, "Maul - Shadow Lord." The comic book is written by Benjamin Percy and drawn by Madibek Musabekov, and the first issue arrives March 2026.

FRANCHISE - From YahooTotalFilm: Despite working on Star Wars properties since "The Phantom Menace," Lucasfilm design director Doug Chiang says that only George Lucas truly knows what Star Wars design is. "I don’t always get it 100 per cent right."

COMICS - From BleedingCool: Artist Taurin Clarke is Marvel Comics' "Star Wars Black History Month" cover artist for February 2026.

From BleedingCool: Ahmed Best, the voice actor best known for the role of "Jar Jar Binks" in the "Star Wars" prequel trilogy, will co-write an official Star Wars Jar Jar Binks comic book for Marvel Comics. The one-shot comic book is due February 2026 and will be co-written by Marc Guggenheim and illustrated by Kieran McKeown and Laura Braga.

From FlickeringMyth: Dark Horse Comics has announced that it will return to the High Republic era of "Star Wars" next year with the six-issue limited series, "Star Wars: The High Republic Adventures – Pathfinders." The series will be written by George Mann ("Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories – Qui-Gon") and drawn by Partha Pratim, Jagdish Kumar, and Michael Atiyeh ("Star Wars: Hyperspace Stories: The Bad Batch"). The first issue is scheduled to arrive March 11, 2026.

THE MANDALORIAN - From YouTube: Lucasfilm has released the first official trailer for "The Mandalorian and Grogu," which is due in theaters May 22, 2026.

STARFIGHTER - From IGN: Lucasfilm offers a new set photo from "Star Wars: Starfighter," featuring cast members, Ryan Gosling and Flynn Gray. The film is due May 28, 2027.

From THR: The latest Star Wars movie, "Star Wars: Starfighter," started shooting on Thursday (Aug. 28th) in the U.K. Lucasfilm marked the ocassion by releasing an image of star Ryan Gosling and new cast member, Flynn Gray, in front of a speeder. Lucasfilm also revealed the latest additions to the cast. Including Flynn Gray, they are Aaron Pierre, Simon Bird, Jamael Westman, Daniel Ings, and Amy Adams. The film is being directed by Shawn Levy and stars Ryan Gosling. Mia Goth and Matt Smith were already revealed to be in the cast, playing villains.

From Deadline: Matt Smith ("Doctor Who") will star alongside Ryan Gosling as a villain in the "Star Wars" film, "Star Wars: Starfighter," which is scheduled for a 2027 release.
