Oliver Stone to Receive the "Laurel Award" from the Writers Guild of America

Oliver Stone to Receive WGAW’s 2017 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement

LOS ANGELES – Legendary screenwriter-director Oliver Stone, whose films include Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, JFK, and Wall Street, is set to receive the Writers Guild of America, West’s 2017 Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement in recognition of his extraordinary career and body of work. He will be honored at the Guild’s awards show on Sunday, February 19, 2017 at The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.

“Oliver Stone may be our most committed screenwriter, using an unparalleled sense of conflict and drama to define the past half century,” said WGAW President Howard A. Rodman. “Stone's Vietnam trilogy – Platoon, Born on the Fourth of July, Heaven & Earth – not only illuminated the war, but made us face its consequences. His unofficial and extraordinary history of the 1960s and 1970s – from JFK and The Doors through Nixon and Wall Street – wove a coherent narrative from incoherent facts. His dialogue is always memorable: think of Gordon Gekko's ‘greed is good,’ or Tony Manero's 182 ‘fucks’ in Scarface. But even Stone's most amoral characters are, in the end, like us: all too human. Stone has held a mirror up to our times, and dares us again and again to look at our nation – and ourselves – without turning away.”

“As a young screenwriter I remember seeing so many I admired graced with the Laurel Award, and I never expected I'd be considered their peer. I am most honored to accept this great award,” commented Stone.

Academy Award winner Stone has written and directed nearly two dozen feature films over the course of his career, including some of the most influential and iconic movies of the last several decades.

His trio of acclaimed Vietnam war-era films are informed by his own real-life experience serving in the U.S. Army Infantry in Vietnam in 1967-68, having been wounded twice in combat and ultimately earning the Bronze Star for Valor, Purple Heart, and other medals of honor during his military career. 1987’s Platoon, written and directed by Stone, earned him Academy Awards for Best Director and Best Picture, and an Oscar nomination for Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen, in addition to a Golden Globe for Best Director, a BAFTA Award for Best Direction, and WGA and Golden Globes screenplays noms.

1989’s Born on the Fourth of July (Screenplay by Oliver Stone & Ron Kovic, Based on the Book by Ron Kovic) memorably chronicled Vietnam vet turned anti-war activist Ron Kovic’s personal post-combat struggle as a paraplegic, exploring what it means to be American along the journey. The acclaimed Tom Cruise-starring film earned Stone a pair of Oscars for Best Picture and Best Director, as well as an Oscar nom for Best Writing (Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium), Golden Globe Awards for Best Director and Best Screenplay, and a WGA adapted screenplay nomination.

The final movie in Stone’s powerful Vietnam trilogy, 1993’s Heaven & Earth (Based on the Books When Heaven and Earth Changed Places by Le Ly Hayslip with Jay Wurts and Child of War, Woman of Peace by Le Ly Hayslip with James Hayslip), follows the harrowing true story of a Vietnamese village girl who survives a life of suffering and hardship during and after the Vietnam war – her own tumultuous relationships with the men in her life providing a potent metaphor for U.S.-Vietnamese political relations.

Stone’s canon of complex and challenging films, often exploring specific eras and controversial topics, include such thought-provoking movies as 1991’s JFK (Screenplay by Oliver Stone & Zachary Sklar, Based on the Books The Trail of the Assassins by Jim Garrison and Crossfire: The Plot That Killed Kennedy by Jim Marrs), Stone’s effort to both unravel and illuminate the labyrinth of conspiracy theories surrounding 1963’s Kennedy assassination, earning Oscar noms for Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Writing (Screenplay Based on Material Previously Produced or Published), as well as a Golden Globe Award for Best Director, a Golden Globe screenplay nom, and a WGA adapted screenplay nom; 1995’s penetrating Presidential biopic Nixon (Written by Stephen J. Rivele & Christopher Wilkinson & Oliver Stone), for which he shared an Oscar screenplay nomination; Natural Born Killers (Screenplay by David Veloz & Richard Rutowski & Oliver Stone, Story by Quentin Tarantino), a dark satire our culture’s fixation on media and violence, which earned Stone a Golden Globe Best Director nom; 1991 rock biopic The Doors (Written by J. Randal Johnson and Oliver Stone), a lyrical look at the ’60s filtered through the prism of Jim Morrison’s seminal band; 1986’s explosive political indictment, Salvador (Written by Oliver Stone & Richard D. Boyle), deeply critical of the U.S. government’s involvement in Central America, for which he shared an Academy Award nomination (Best Writing, Screenplay Written Directly for the Screen); 1987’s Wall Street (Written by Stanley Weiser & Oliver Stone), his bold expose of ’80s excess and America’s new brand of capitalism, and 1988’s dark “shock jock” true-life tale, Talk Radio (Screenplay by Eric Bogosian & Oliver Stone, Based on the Play “Talk Radio” Created by Eric Bogosian & Tad Savinar, Written by Eric Bogosian, and the Book Talked to Death: The Life and Murder of Alan Berg by Stephen Singular).

Stone’s films also include his unconventional view of professional sports, Any Given Sunday (1999, Screenplay by John Logan and Oliver Stone, Screen Story by Daniel Pyne and John Logan), epic historical drama Alexander (2004, Written by Oliver W. Stone and Laeta E. Kalogridis and Christopher Kyle), the timely sequel Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps (Written by Allan Loeb and Stephen Schiff, Based on Characters Created by Stanley Weiser & Oliver Stone), which chronicled the 2008 stock market crash and Gordon Gekko’s fate after prison; the drug cartel dark comedy Savages (2012, Screenplay by Shane Salerno & Don Winslow & Oliver Stone, Based on the Novel by Don Winslow), and most recently real-life political thriller Snowden (Screenplay Kieran Fitzgerald & Oliver Stone, Based on the Book The Time of the Octopus by Anatoli Kucherena; Based on The Guardian Book by Luke Harding), in which Stone explores timely issues of privacy and surveillance through the case of military whistleblower Lt. Edward Snowden, accused of leaking millions of U.S. government documents and now in Russian exile.

His other screenplay credits include such diverse movies as comic book blockbuster Conan the Barbarian (1986, Written by John Milius and Oliver Stone, Based on the Character Created by Robert E. Howard), iconic gangster drama Scarface (1983, Screenplay by Oliver Stone, Based on Book by Armitage Trail), crime thriller Year of the Dragon (1985, Screenplay by Oliver Stone & Michael Cimino, Based on the Novel by Robert Daley), Eight Million Ways to Die (1986, Screenplay by David Lee Henry and Oliver Stone, Based on the Book by Lawrence Block), and the Madonna-starring, Broadway-to-screen musical Evita (Screenplay by Alan Parker and Oliver Stone, Based on the Musical Play “Evita,” Lyrics by Tim Rice, Music by Andrew Lloyd Webber).

While still in his ’20s, Stone made his feature film screenwriting and directing debut with 1975’s horror yarn Seizure (Screenplay by Oliver Stone & Edward Asher Mann, Story by Oliver Stone) – and would later revisit the horror genre with the 1981 thriller The Hand (Screenplay by Oliver Stone, Based Upon the Book The Lizard’s Tail by Marc Brandel).

A WGAW member since 1977, Stone first received industry accolades for his acclaimed screenplay for the 1978 Turkish prison drama Midnight Express (Screenplay by Oliver Stone, Based on the Book by William Hayes with William Hoffer), earning him an Academy Award (Best Writing, Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium), a Writers Guild Award (Best Drama Adapted from Another Medium), and a Golden Globe Award (Best Screenplay – Motion Picture) for his screenplay.

Stone’s additional directing credits include World Trade Center (2006), depicting the true story of our nation’s few 9/11 survivors; 2008’s no-holds-barred political biopic W., his satirical skewering of former U.S. President George Bush; and pitch-black thriller U-Turn (1997). He has also produced or co-produced a dozen films, including The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996), The Joy Luck Club (1993), and Reversal of Fortune (1990). On the small screen, Stone shared a 1995 Primetime Emmy Award (Outstanding Made for Television Movie) for executive producing the telefilm Indictment: The McMartin Trial.

His documentaries include a trio of films focusing on late Cuban leader Fidel Castro (2003’s Comandante, 2004’s Looking for Fidel, and 2012’s Castro in Winter), as well as 2009’s South of the Border, featuring Hugo Chavez and six other Presidents in a continent undergoing seismic social changes, and Stone’s tribute to the late Venezuelan leader and personal friend, Mi Amigo Hugo (2014). He also made 2003’s Persona Non Grata, examining Israel-Palestine relations. Stone’s latest work includes the ambitious Showtime doc series, The Untold History of the United States, a monumental, 12-hour interrogation of the conventional “triumphalist” narrative of U.S. history.

Born on September 15, 1946, in New York City, Stone launched his writing career early on, penning his first novel – A Child’s Night Dream – when he was only 19. The book, ultimately published in 1997 by St. Martin’s Press, is set to be adapted and directed by Stone’s own son, Sean. After returning from Vietnam, he completed his undergraduate studies at New York University Film School in 1971. His early jobs included such diverse stints as a taxi driver, merchant marine, messenger, advertising salesman, and, finally, production assistant, which provided a segue to his prolific, celebrated filmmaking career.

Awarded to a Writers Guild member who has advanced the literature of motion pictures and made outstanding contributions to the profession of the screenwriter, past recipients of the WGAW’s Laurel Award for Screenwriting Achievement include Elaine May, Harold Ramis, David Mamet, Tom Stoppard, Paul Mazursky, Lawrence Kasdan, Robert Benton, Barry Levinson, Steven Zaillian, and Eric Roth.

The Writers Guild Awards honor outstanding writing in film, television, new media, videogames, news, radio, promotional, and graphic animation categories. The awards will be presented at concurrent ceremonies on Sunday, February 19, 2017, in Los Angeles at the Beverly Hilton and in New York City at the Edison Ballroom. Dark Horse Comics Announces the Return of "The Shaolin Cowboy"

Legendary Writer/Artist Geof Darrow’s "Shaolin Cowboy" Returns in 2017

MILWAUKIE, Ore.—Get a kung-fu grip on yourself as Geof Darrow’s blood-spattered killing machine the Shaolin Cowboy returns this April in a new four-issue mini-series to be published by Dark Horse Comics. The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign? will be written and illustrated by Darrow, who has won the Inkpot Award and won (and lost) multiple Eisner Awards, and colored by the Eisner Award-winning Dave Stewart. The first issue will have a main cover by Darrow and Stewart and a variant cover by the award-winning Frank Miller, Darrow’s co-contributor on Hard Boiled and Big Guy and Rusty the Boy Robot. In The Shaolin Cowboy: Who’ll Stop the Reign?, the titular hero of the series finds that his road to hell is paved not with good intentions but old nemeses hell bent on bloody revenge.

In addition to the chainsaw-fueled adventures of the Shaolin Cowboy, Darrow is renowned for his early work with Moebius, his designs for television (including Super Friends, Richie Rich, and Pac-Man) and films (including The Matrix and Speed Racer), his collaborations with Frank Miller and Andrew Vachss, and his iconic and detailed comic book covers.

“For a press release about a comic known for not having much dialogue, this press release sure has a lot of words in it,” said Darrow.

Before he was a Three-time Eisner Award winner, Geof Darrow was born in Cedar Rapids, IA. He is an ex-altar boy, garden mechanic and boom operator on a soft-core adult film. He resides in Chicago IL and his artwork inspires and disillusions fans and artists alike:

Obsessively detailed, hysterically ultraviolent … Darrow has no truck with fripperies like plot, which would only get in the way of his exceptional draftsmanship and genius for staging Grand Guignol fight scenes.”—NEW YORK TIMES BOOK REVIEW

"No one draws violence quite like Geof Darrow, and nothing he’s drawn is quite as violent as his latest graphic novel.”—NY MAG’s VULTURE

Shaolin Cowboy has always been a little on the crazy side. Okay, a lot on the crazy side.”—IGN

Mind-blowing.”—PASTE MAGAZINE

“Completely ridiculous—and 100% amazing.”—io9

A cold shower wake up call to those who forgot that there are pictures that go with all of the colorful rhetoric.”—AIN’T IT COOL NEWS

Who says you can’t learn things from comic books? For example, in “Shaolin Cowboy” ... I’ve learned that monks aren’t too chatty.—BLOODY DISGUSTING

To say that Geof Darrow is unique is a bit of an understatement. I think he’s just plain brilliant.”—Mike Mignola

Content Discovery Platform, Kitsu, Gets $600,000 in Seed Funding

KITSU RAISES $600,000 IN SEED FUNDING TO BRING ANIME TO THE MACHINE... AND MORE

Anime-focused recommendation and social platform gets backing from VIZ Media and Bernard Chong to build out world-class content discovery capabilities

PITTSBURGH, Pennsylvania – Kitsu, a startup changing the way the community experiences anime, announced today that it has raised six hundred thousand dollars in a seed round between San Francisco, California-based entertainment company VIZ Media, LLC, and Manila, Philippines-based entrepreneur Bernard Chong. Kitsu will use these funds to build out its world-class content discovery platform at kitsu.io, led by Kitsu founder and CEO, Josh Fabian, who started the project under the Hummingbird name. Josh previously was Lead Designer, Groupon Stores, and Lead Designer, oBaz.

“What makes me most excited about where Kitsu is going is how easy it's going to be to connect with other anime and manga fans,” said Josh Fabian, Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Kitsu. “We’ve been very proactive and thoughtful about how exactly to approach the social component of anime, and we think what we have will continue to drive that conversation moving forward."

As part of the investment, Bernard Chong as well as Brad Woods, VIZ Media's Chief Marketing Officer, will join the Kitsu board. VIZ Media’s Rob Pereyda, Vice President of Business Development, led the deal at the company and will serve as Senior Advisor.

“We're thrilled to be working with Josh and the Kitsu team to bring this content to a wider audience,” said Brad Woods, Chief Marketing Officer at VIZ Media. "The features that are being rolled out with the new platform are really exciting, and we believe they will drive engagement for the anime industry as a whole."

“Discovery is one of the great challenges in the entertainment world today,” said Bernard Chong. “With Josh, I see an incredible entrepreneur with the product chops to help drive consumption, monetization and just plain joy in the business, and to me that is exciting.”

Built atop the modern web frameworks Ruby on Rails and Ember, the Kitsu platform (formerly Hummingbird) will remain open-source and be available to other entrepreneurs to use to drive their own discovery and social capabilities. The seed round investment from Bernard Chong and VIZ Media coincides with a ground-up rewrite and redesign of the Kitsu platform, now placing a greater emphasis on the social component of a user's experience.

While a key selling point of the platform for many users has been the functionality to track the anime and manga they've seen and are planning to see, "Version 3" of the platform heavily focuses on the social aspect, leveraging a robust machine learning engine to surface content users will be more likely to enjoy, including not just one-to-one, show-to-show recommendation pairings, but sophisticated taste-based content cohorts (interest clusters).

About Kitsu
Kitsu is a content discovery platform that helps anime and manga fans track, share and discover more of what they love. Through a world-class recommendation engine layered with social, machine learning and more, Kitsu is able to go beyond the traditional “what to watch next” and instead become a central part of peoples’ lives. With an open source platform and a thriving developer community, Kitsu is a one-of-a-kind player in the content discovery space not just for anime and manga, but the entertainment business in general. It actively shares its technology with the community and aims to enrich the lives of fans as well as help the business grow. More information is available at kitsu.io.

Dark Horse to Publish French Comic Book Adaptation of "Moby Dick"

DARK HORSE ADAPTS MELVILLE’S WHALE OF A TALE INTO A GRAPHIC NOVEL

MILWAUKIE, Ore.—Dark Horse Books is proud to announce the Vents d’Ouest graphic novel adaptation of Herman Melville’s timeless classic Moby Dick, available in English for the first time on February 8, 2017.

A masterpiece of French literary comics, this hardcover edition collects both Vents d’Ouest volumes and features illustrations by the award-winning French author and artist Christophe Chabouté (Purgatoire, Tout Seul). Striking black-and-white frames faithfully capture this Great American Novel as we follow the revenge-seeking voyage of Captain Ahab.

The graphic adaptation is perfect for literature lovers looking for a unique spin on the tale of the great white whale. The English edition includes a foreword by John Arcudi (Dead Inside, Rumble).

“No comics adaptation I’ve seen has come close to doing what Christophe Chabouté does right here in this graphic novel…His storytelling, his pacing, matches Melville’s perfectly,” said Arcudi. “He does it with obvious love for Melville’s poetic writing, and he has the advantage of a great gift for drawing that allows him to give light to those potent words. He can almost hypnotize us with his gorgeous, grand, rhythmic art.”

Moby Dick is available for preorder at Amazon, Barnes and Noble, IndieBound, Things From Another World, DarkHorse.com, and more!

"The Man in the High Castle" Gets Third Season from Amazon

Amazon Prime Video Greenlights Season Three of Emmy Award-Winning and Top-Streamed Original Dramatic Series The Man in the High Castle

Eric Overmyer will serve as showrunner and executive producer

Season Two had the most viewers over its debut weekend of all scripted Amazon Original Series that debuted this year

SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ: AMZN)—Amazon today announced it has greenlit a third season of the original dramatic series The Man in the High Castle. Additionally, Eric Overmyer (Treme, Bosch, The Affair) will serve as showrunner and executive producer for this new season. Seasons one and two of the Emmy Award-winning drama series are now available exclusively on Amazon Prime Video in the US, UK, Germany and Austria via the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Fire TV, mobile devices and online at http://amazon.com/originals. Following in the footsteps of its first season, Season Two of The Man in the High Castle premiered with the most viewers over its debut weekend of all scripted Amazon Original Series.

“The screenplay is mesmerizing, and the sets beyond perfection, giving you an idea of what America would have been.”

The Man in the High Castle stars Alexa Davalos (Mob City), Rupert Evans (American Pastoral), Luke Kleintank (Pretty Little Liars), DJ Qualls (Z Nation), Joel De La Fuente (Hemlock Grove), Brennan Brown (Focus), Bella Heathcote (The Neon Demon), and Callum Keith Rennie (Longmire), with Cary-Hiroyuki Tagawa (Revenge) and Rufus Sewell (Victoria). The series was developed by Frank Spotnitz (The X-Files), with Ridley Scott (The Martian), David W. Zucker (The Good Wife), Richard Heus (Ugly Betty), Isa Dick Hackett (The Adjustment Bureau), and Daniel Percival (Banished) serving as executive producers for Season Three.

“As timely as ever, the exploration of characters at a dark point for humanity has provided incredible stories for two seasons,” said Joe Lewis, Head of Comedy and Drama, Amazon Studios. “Eric and his team are doing an incredible job crafting stories about the inner lives of those who struggle to do good in a world that is not. We couldn’t be more excited to bring season three to customers in 2017.”

Season two has an average customer rating of 4.6 stars. Here is what customers have been saying:

  •     “Set in a dystopian future where the Allies lose the war, it is a brilliant piece with an interesting plot line and interesting characters to match.”
  •     “…A terrific television drama in all of the ways I was expecting — it's an intelligently written and competently directed adaptation of what seems like a truly great science fiction classic.”
  •     “The screenplay is mesmerizing, and the sets beyond perfection, giving you an idea of what America would have been.”
  •     “The Man in the High Castle is phenomenal television in every sense.”
  •     “This show has one of the best possible premises in the history of television.”

Based on Philip K. Dick's Hugo Award-winning 1962 alternate history novel, season two of the one-hour drama series The Man in the High Castle continues to explore what would have happened if the Allied Powers had lost World War II. While Germany controls much of the East Coast and Japan controls the West Coast, the Rocky Mountains have become a “neutral zone”—and ground zero for a resistance, led by a mysterious figure known only as “the Man in the High Castle." While some citizens struggle against the fear, oppression and inequality, others accept their lives, as compromised and unfulfilling as they might be. But after a series of enigmatic films surface depicting a world vastly different from their own, some begin to question the very nature of their reality.

Eric Overmyer has writing and producing credits that include St. Elsewhere, The Days and Nights of Molly Dodd, Homicide: Life on the Street, Law & Order, The Wire, New Amsterdam and Treme, which he created with David Simon, and adapting Amazon Original Series Bosch for television. He has four Writers Guild nominations, three Emmy nominations, two Edgar nominations and a Humanitas nomination. With his colleagues, he has shared a Writers Guild award and an Edgar award for The Wire, and a Peabody award and a PEN teleplay award for Treme.

The first two seasons of The Man in the High Castle are now available for Prime members to stream and enjoy using the Amazon Prime Video app for TVs, connected devices including Amazon Fire TV, and mobile devices, or online at Amazon.com/originals, at no additional cost to their membership. AWARDS GALA WILL TAKE PLACE AT THE TAGLYAN COMPLEX IN LOS ANGELES FEBRUARY 9th AT 9PM ET/ 6 PM PT

Los Angeles, CA – Movies, documentaries and TV shows about the black experience were in abundance in 2016 making it a truly historic year in terms of the number of movies, documentaries and TV shows released and number of blacks represented in front and behind the camera.

“Our members had a plethora of outstanding movies, documentaries and TV shows to choose from this year," says AAFCA Co-founder Shawn Edwards. "It was an exceptional year in terms of the quantity and quality of films about the black experience. And while this by no means solves the diversity issue in the film industry it was definitely refreshing to have such a wide-range of exceptional work to choose from to honor and celebrate with our approval."

There were several movies released this year that are considered masterpieces. However, it was "Moonlight" that dominated this year’s voting for the 8th AAFCA Awards. The independent film which chronicles the life of a young black man from childhood to adulthood as he struggles to find his place in the world while growing up in a rough neighborhood of Miami completely resonated with the majority of the members of the association. The A24 Pictures film earned multiple awards including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Ensemble and Best Supporting Actor. Awards were also given to singer Janelle Monae for Breakout Performance. She delivered star-making performances this year in both "Moonlight" and "Hidden Figures." The top acting honors went to Denzel Washington and Ruth Negga for their roles in Fences and Loving. AAFCA will hold its 8th annual awards ceremony on Thursday, February 9, 2017 at the Taglyan Complex in Hollywood, CA.

"2016 provided our membership with many great films to choose from,” says AAFCA President and Co-founder, Gil Robertson. "Every movie and TV show on our Top 10 Lists could have easily been number one. The number of incredible performances by black actors and actresses added to a very competitive field of performances and represents a step towards inclusion that our membership warmly embraces. We look forward to what 2017 has in store."
