Comics Review: "ELVIRA in Horrorland Volume 1 #5" - Elvira Finds the Exit

ELVIRA IN HORRORLAND VOLUME 1 #5
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: David Avallone
ART: Silvia Califano
COLORS: Walter Pereya
LETTERS: Taylor Esposito
EDITOR: Joseph Rybandt
COVER: Dave Acosta and Jason Moore
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (December 2022)

Rated Teen+

Chapter Five: “Fly Me to the Moon”

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character,” known as “Elvira.”  Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name.  As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s.

Elvira also appeared in comic books, beginning in 1986 with the short-lived series from DC Comics, Elvira's House of Mystery.  In 2018, Elvira returned to comic books via Dynamite Entertainment.  Elvira's latest comic book series is Elvira in Horrorland Volume 1.  The series is written by David Avallone; drawn by Silvia Califano; colored by Walter Pereyra; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  The series finds Elvira trapped in the Multiverse of Movies (a bunch of “pocket dimensions” created by the existence of movies) with only the illusive “Remote Control of Federico Fellini” capable of returning her home.

Elvira in Horrorland Volume 1 #5 (“Fly Me to the Moon”) opens in a new world.  Elvira lands in the cinematic world of filmmaker, Daniel Chernabog.  First up for the Mistress of the Dark is the horror flick starring two unreasonably tall people, “The Mumblefly.”  Now she faces off against telepods, Brundleflies, scanners, videodromes, talking cockroaches, bug powder … and a static-y hand that emerges from a television screen.  Is this the final leg of Elvira's journey?  Will the remote finally work correctly for her?  Or will she merely be left with a naked lunch?

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Elvira in Horrorland Volume 1 #5, one of many Dynamite/David Avallone Elvira comic books that I have read and enjoyed.

“Fly Me to the Moon” skewers the films of the renowned Canadian filmmaker and writer-director, David Cronenberg, who is one of my favorite film directors.  Writer David Avallone spoofs Cronenberg as “Daniel Chernabog” and references a number of Cronenberg's films, including Scanners (1981), Dead Ringers (1988), and Naked Lunch (1992).  The ones that get the most pounding are two of Cronenberg's most memorable and notorious films, Videodrome (1983) and The Fly (1986), which is a remake of classic 20th Century Fox sci-fi/horror film, The Fly (1958).

Avallone gleefully lampoons Videodrome's acclaimed actor turned pariah, James Woods.  Avallone also has fun with his spoof versions of the stars of The Fly, Jeff Goldblum and Geena Davis, and he captures the strangeness of them as leads in the same film.  I believe that if Cronenberg's The Fly were made today, the studio would not allow two offbeat types like Goldblum and Davis to be cast – maybe one, but not both.  [They'd likely cast British or Australian waifs with generic American accents.]

Elvira in Horrorland artist Silvia Califano certainly captures the general wackiness of the actors who star in Cronenberg's films.  Califano produces a perfectly creepy cartoon version of James Woods, and that alone is worthy of an award from some comics organization.

Elvira in Horrorland is fun and full of puns and proves that even the best filmmakers are ripe for some deflating of filmography … if not also of reputation.  Avallone and Califano also prove once again that if you can't get Elvira live, you can get her as a perfect comic book character.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Elvira and of David Avallone's Elvira comic books will want to read Elvira in Horrorland Volume 1.

Marvelman created by Mick Anglo; Miracleman created by Alan Moore, Garry Leach, and Dez Skinn

Marvelman is a British superhero character created in 1954 by writer-artist Mick Anglo for British publisher, L. Miller & Son.  The character was originally created as a substitute for the American character, Captain Marvel (Fawcett Comics), in the U.K.

In March 1982, Warrior, a British monthly, black-and-white anthology comics magazine, was launched by editor and publisher Dez Skinn, who decided to revive Marvelman.  Warrior would eventually publish a new and darker version of Marvelman, written by Alan Moore and initially illustrated by Garry Leach and later by Alan Davis.  In August 1985, Eclipse Comics began reprinting the Marvelman stories from Warrior (in color) in a comic book entitled, Miracleman (to avoid legal problems with Marvel Comics).

After purchasing the rights to the character decades later, Marvel Comics brought Eclipse Comics’ Miracleman series back into print in a new special edition with extras, beginning in 2014.  Now, Marvel Comics is celebrating the fortieth anniversary of the beginning of Marvelman/Miracleman's modern era with a new one-shot comic book.

Miracleman #0 contains four stories, a pin-up, and a few gag strips, all sandwiched between a framing sequence slash set-up, entitled “Apocrypha,” written by Neil Gaiman and drawn by Mark Buckingham.  On the cusp of a new era, Miracleman #0 celebrates the launch of a comic that would help change American superhero comic books.

THE LOWDOWN:  So the conceit of Gaiman and Buckingham's “Apocrypha” is that Miracleman visits the “Library of Olympus.”  There, he finds old Miracleman comic books, which he begins reading.  The following stories: “Blood on the Snow,” “Whisper in the Dark,” "Kimota's Miracle," and “The Man Whose Dreams were Miracles;” the gag strips “Miracle Funnies” (by Ty Templeton), and the fake ad, “MM: TAS” (also by Templeton) are what Miracleman reads in those old comic books.

The best of the lot is “The Man Whose Dreams were Miracles” by writer Jason Aaron and artist Leinil Francis Yu.  In spite of Yu's scratchy looking art, which irritates me eyes and my imagination, the story is good.  It may also give us a hint of Miracleman's future in the Marvel Universe proper, as I have come across Internet rumors that Jason Aaron may be the writer on Marvel's first Miracleman ongoing comic book series.

Still, Miracleman #0 isn't much of a 40th anniversary special, granted Marvel is often not good with anniversary issues and specials (see Marvel Comics #1000).  A proper Miracleman anniversary comic book would feature the work of Alan Moore, but he has held to his infamous promise never to write for Marvel.  Moore won't even let Marvel use his name when it reprints Miracleman comic books that he wrote!  Garry Leach is recently deceased.  The last possibility is Alan Davis; at least, he contributed the art for the main cover (Cover A) for Miracleman #0.  A word or two from someone formerly associated with Eclipse Comics would have been nice, as would be something from Dez Skinn.

Miracleman #0 does include a six-page preview of Mark Buckingham's black and white art for the upcoming Miracleman: The Silver Age, the second arc of his and Gaiman's long-awaited Miracleman magnum opus.  Mostly, Miracleman #0 seems like a lame money-grab.  My disagreements are not about this comic book's creative talent; there is enough talent here for several comic books.  I simply think Marvel could (and should) have done better – much better – to celebrate Miracleman.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Miracleman may want to try Miracleman #0

[This comic book includes a black and white preview of Miracleman: The Silver Age #1 by Neil Gaiman and Mark Buckingham.]

Review: Netflix's "THE POWER OF THE DOG" is Certainly a Movie

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 74 of 2022 (No. 1886) by Leroy Douresseaux

The Power of the Dog (2021)
Running time:  128 minutes (2 hours, 8 minutes)
MPA – R for strong sexuality and language
DIRECTOR:  Jane Campion
WRITER:  Jane Campion (based on a novel by Thomas Savage)
PRODUCERS:  Jane Chapman, Iain Canning, Roger Frappier, Tanya Seghatchian, and Emile Sherman
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Ari Wegner (D.o.P.)
EDITOR:  Peter Sciberras
COMPOSER:  Jonny Greenwood
Academy Award winner

WESTERN/DRAMA

Starring:  Benedict Cumberbatch, Kirsten Dunst, Jesse Plemons, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Genevieve Lemon, Peter Carroll, Frances Conroy, Alison Bruce, Keith Carradine, Thomasin McKenzie, Ramontay McConnell, Adam Beach, and Maeson Stone Skuggedal

The Power of the Dog is a 2021 Western drama film from writer-director Jane Campion.  It is based on the1967 novel, The Power of the Dog, from author Thomas Savage.  The Power of the Dog the movie focuses on a charismatic rancher who torments his brother, his brother's new wife, and her son.

The Power of the Dog opens in rural Montana, 1925 and focuses on Phil Burbank (Benedict Cumberbatch).  Phil is, along with brother, George Burbank (Jesse Plemons), wealthy ranch-owners.  George meets Rose Gordon (Kirsten Dunst), a widow and inn owner, during a cattle drive.  The kindhearted George is quickly smitten with Rose, but Phil, always coarse and volatile, dislikes her and considers her nothing more than a gold-digger who wants George's money.

Phil also belittles Rose's teenage son, Peter (Kodi Smit-McPhee), whom he derides as weak and effeminate – a sissy.  George and Rose soon marry, and Rose comes to live at the Burbank brothers' isolated ranch estate and manor home. However, Rose withers under Phil's torment.  Sometimes later, Peter comes to stay and things begin to change...

The Power of the Dog is a ridiculous title for a film, but I like it for a novel.  The film is a psychological drama dressed in the rags of a Western.  Its narrative focuses on two despicable characters (Phil and Pete) and two meek, but lovable and sympathetic characters (George and Rose).

I would not describe any of the characters as vague so much as they reflect a narrative that is oblique, which in turn reflects on characters with pinched personalities.  Benedict Cumberbatch's Phil Burbank is mean and spiteful, but just like that, one day, he turns all … gay over a weirdo kid he only hated just a few seconds ago.  Kodi Smit-McPhee's Peter may be the film's most well-developed character; it is obvious that there is a lot going on with him.  He is more than the audience can imagine and apparently quite the litle psycho-sociopath.

As I said, Kirsten's Dunst's Rose and Jessie Plemons' George are lovable, but are slight characters.  They both received Oscar nominations in supporting acting categories; whether they deserved them or not is a matter of opinion.  I will say that Dunst spends most of the film crying and sniveling and yelling and stumbling around.  Jesse Plemons is barely a whisper in the wind as George, and sometimes it seems as if George's entire screen time amounts to only a few minutes.  Of course, he is onscreen more than that; it's just that he seems to be on it much less...

I can see why actor Sam Elliot questioned The Power of the Dog's credibility as a Western.  The film lacks a central, focused voice, and girl, Westerns have voice.  It is not a bad film.  The Power of the Dog does indeed have some power and some powerful moments, but director Jane Campion sublimates the passion and the urges she says define this film.  The film lacks heart and is unhurried to the point of being meandering.

My original plan was to write a review of The Power of the Dog that was comprised of a single question mark.  However, the film's shock ending gave me a reason to say more.  I guess I'm one critic who is not buying into The Power of the Dog.
