From Variety:  Television and film actress, Kirstie Alley, has died at the age of 71, Monday, December 5, 2022.  Alley rose to fame as "Rebecca Howe" on the former NBC sitcom, "Cheers," from 1987-93, a role for which she won a Primetime Emmy Award for "Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series."  She originated the role of "Saavik" in "Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan," and she also appeared in three "Look Who's Talking" films.

From Variety:   Actor, singer, musician, recording artist, and children's book author, Bob McGrath, has died at the age of 90, Sunday, December 4, 2022.  McGrath played one of the original human characters, "Bob Johnson," on the long-running PBS education series, "Sesame Streeet."  McGrath played Bob Johnson from 1969 until 2016.

TELEVISION - From Deadline: CBS' new drama series, "Fire Country," debuted Fri., Oct. 7th and had the highest debut of any series of the new 2022-23 television season.

NETFLIX - From Deadline:   For the first time, all three big exhibitors (movie theater chains) are on board with releasing a major Netflix title, Rian Johnson's "Knives Out" sequel, "Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery."  The movie will hit theaters on Wednesday, Nov. 23, the day before Thanksgiving, and will begin streaming on Netflix on Dec. 23rd.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Rust Movie Productions LLC and its "Rust" star and producer, Alec Baldwin, have reached a settlement with the estate of slain cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, who died on the set of the Western film due to the discharge of a firearm.  As part of the peace, her husband, Matthew Hutchins, will executive produce Rust, which will return to production in January 2023 with the original cast.

MOVIE - From Deadline:   Actress Taissa Farmiga will return as "Sister Irene" in "The Nun 2," the sequel to 2018's "The Nun."  The new film is due Sept 2023.

JAMES BOND - From Fatherly:   The next James Bond actor will not be in his twenties when he starts the series.

From Deadline:   Comedian and actress, Judy Tenuta, has died at the age of 72, Thursday, October 6, 2022.  Known to her fans as the "Love Goddess," Tenuta appeared on numerous television shows, including several cable comedy specials, game shows, and documentaries.  Tenuta was known for her unconventional and brash stage act and also as a voice performer on several animated TV series, including "Duckman" and "Cow and Chicken."  She was also a two-time nominee in the category, "Grammy Award for Best Comedy Album."

From RollingStone:  Singer-songwriter and country music icon, Loretta Lynn, has died at the age of 90, Tuesday, October 4, 2022.  A three-time Grammy Award winner, Lynn was a pioneering woman in country music for women empowerment with songs like "Fist City" (1968) and "The Pill" (1975).  Her 1970 hit, "Coal Miner's Daughter" (from the album of the same name) was her signature song and became the title of the 1980 Oscar-winning biographical film about her life.

From Variety:  Native American civil rights activist and actress, Sacheen Littlefeather, has died at the age of 75, Sunday, October 2, 2022.  Littlefeather had been suffering from breast cancer.  She was best known for her appearance at the 1973 / 45th Academy Awards where she declined Marlon Brando’s "Best Actor" Oscar for “The Godfather” (1972) on his behalf.  In June (2022), the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences apologized to Littlefeather for her treatment at the Oscars that night, and she attended an in-person presentation ("An Evening with Sacheen Littlefeather") of the apology at the Academy Museum on Sept. 17.

Review: Yep! Keke Palmer Steals Weird and Scary "NOPE"

HORROR/SCI-FI/MYSTERY/THRILLER

Nope is a 2022 science fiction horror film and mystery-thriller written and directed by Jordan Peele.  The film focuses on two siblings who witness something uncanny and terrifying on and around their family's ranch.

Nope introduces Otis “OJ” Haywood, Jr. (Daniel Kaluuya) and his younger sister, Emerald “Em” Haywood (Keke Palmer), who own and operate “Haywood Hollywood Horses,” on their family's ranch where they train horses to perform on film and television.  Things have been difficult since their father, Otis Haywood (Keith David), died several months earlier in a mysterious accident in which random objects fell from the sky.

Since then, uncanny occurrences – strange sounds and odd sightings – have been happening in and around their isolated town with increasing frequency.  When OJ and Em begin to suspect they have an idea of what the abnormal events happening on their ranch are, they decide to capture video evidence of an unidentified flying object.  A local tech store employee, Angel Torres (Brandon Perea), injects himself into the siblings' situation.

However, the involvement of Ricky “Jupe” Park (Steven Yeun), the owner of a local amusement park, “Jupiter's Claim,” takes the mystery to a new level.  Now, OJ, Em, and Angel may come close to filming their own demise.

I am a big fan of the first two films Jordan Peele wrote and directed, the Oscar-winning Get Out (2016) and Us (2019).  I am also a fan of the 2021 sequel/reboot, Candyman, which Peele co-wrote and co-produced.  Nope isn't quite as good as his early directorial efforts, but it is not like them, nor is it like any film I have ever seen.

Nope is scary and thrilling, but also offbeat and really weird.  I want to emphasize weird, especially because the mystery the Haywoods are chasing is and isn't what they (or we) think it is.  I found myself trying to unravel the weirdness and the mystery as much as I found myself being scared.  Jordan Peele is so imaginative and inventive that he fills Nope with enough ideas and subplots for four movies.  That is something of a problem, as Nope often feels unfocused.  But I find it brilliant anyway.

Attentive viewers will notice that Nope has similarities to a number of films.  I noticed elements of two Steven Spielberg classics, Jaws (1975) and Close Encounters of the Kind (1977).  There is a touch of M. Night Shyamalan's Signs (2002).  Thematically, Nope brushes against Spielberg's Jurassic Park (1993), and Peele mentioned the influence of The Wizard of Oz (1939) on him while writing Nope's screenplay, which I don't see.  The last act does recall Alien 3 (1992) for me.

Nope does feature the kind of great characters and superb character writing that defined Peele's earlier efforts.  All the characters, especially OJ and Emerald, feel like characters that have a long history before this film and will have a life beyond the confines of Nope's narrative and run time.  Daniel Kaluuya does intense and laid back with equal aplomb; in this quasi-Western film, he makes OJ Haywood a true cowboy hero.  However, I think the actress and character that get the most mileage out of this film are Keke Palmer and Emerald Haywood.  This is the first time that I have seen Palmer play a real adult woman who has lived a life that is complex in its tribulations, but is also filled with good times, even some wild times.  Steven Yeun, Brandon Perea, Michael Wincott, and child actor, Jacob Kim, are quite good in their roles, but Nope is the Daniel Kaluuya and Keke Palmer show.

Nope has a lot of lovely cinematography, especially involving the open sky and clouds.  The sound design is also absolutely good and frequently gave me a feeling of unease.  I think that in some ways Nope is trying to make us uncomfortable, and it proves that Jordan Peele is the master of making films that get at the fault lines of America.

However, in his bid to mystify us and to get at us, Peele might have gone a bit too far this time.  Nope is a brilliant work that is as weird and obtuse as it is thrilling.  With Nope, Jordan Peele is like Denis Villeneuve (Dune: Part One); he is too good for the own good of his film.

Review: "LIGHTYEAR" Works Hard, But the Robot Cat Steals the Show

Lightyear is a 2022 computer-animated, science fiction, action-adventure film directed by Angus MacLane, produced by Pixar Animation Studios, and distributed by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures.  The film is based on the character and story surrounding the character, Buzz Lightyear, that first appeared in the 1995 film, Toy Story.  Lightyear focuses on a marooned space ranger who takes on an army of robots with only an inexperienced group of recruits to help him.

In 1995, a young Andy Davis (of Toy Story) saw the film that inspired the “Buzz Lightyear” toy line that he loves so much.  Lightyear is that film.

Lightyear introduces Buzz Lightyear (Chris Evans), a “Space Ranger” in Star Command and the pilot of “the Turnip,” a space exploration vessel.  Buzz and his commanding officer, Alisha Hawthorne (Uzo Aduba), are exploring the habitable planet, Tikana Prime, when a series of accidents occur.  Now, the Turnip is stranded on Tikana, marooning the entire crew.

Lightyear spends the next several decades experimenting with hyperspace crystalline fuel in a bid to get the marooned crew off the planet.  Eventually, he is mostly a forgotten outcast, with only SOX (Peter Sohn), his robotic cat his only companion.  Buzz meets another group of misfits:  Izzy Hawthorne (Keke Palmer), Alisha's granddaughter; Mo Morrison (Taika Waititi), a clumsy recruit in the colonial defense forces; and Darby Steel (Dale Soules), an elderly paroled convict conscripted into the defense forces.  Together, they will take on a ruthless army of robots and their mysterious leader, Emperor Zurg (James Brolin), who has a shocking connection to Buzz Lightyear.

Lightyear is the first Pixar Animation Studios film to receive a wide theatrical release in North America in over two years, the last being 2020's Oscar-nominated Onward.  In that time, among the Pixar films that Disney released on its streaming service, Disney+, is one almost perfect Pixar film, Soul (2020), and one perfect film, Luca (2021).

Lightyear is a good, but not great Pixar film.  Yes, it follows the formula of Pixar films of having likable and lovable characters with engaging story arcs.  The characters have to overcome flaws, such as Buzz's insistence that he go-it-alone; Izzy's determination to be just like her grandmother; and Mo's clumsiness that is always endangering the mission and his compatriots.  Like many Pixar films, Lightyear has a last act filled with peril and near-disaster, if not near-death.  That is the problem with Lightyear, however; it is simply too formulaic.

Lightyear is not a particularly imaginative science fiction film.  Tikana Prime's aggressive plant vines and killer bugs are generic elements that can be found in American comic books, Japanese manga, sci-fi cartoons, etc.  Lightyear does have one great character, the robotic cat, Sox, who is in the great tradition of both Walt Disney and Pixar's memorable and lovable animal and animal-like sidekicks.  Sox is the reason that Lightyear does not fall into mediocrity.  Also, Peter Sohn, the actor who voices Sox, sounds like actor Jason Bateman (which is a good thing), at least, to me.

After seeing it, I realize that Lightyear is the kind of animated film that I usually wait to watch via the home media release instead of going to a movie theater to see it.  But Sox makes the trip to the theater worth it, and he is the reason for the grade I am giving the film.  While the last act is a nice reward for watching the entire film, Lightyear is not a Disney “instant classic,” and that's all there is to it.

NETFLIX - From Deadline:   In competitive bidding, Netflix closed a deal to acquire U.S. rights to "Gunpowder Milkshake" from STX Films. The female-driven action film is directed by Navot Papushado, and produced by Studiocanal and The Picture Company.

DISNEY - From Deadline: Rick Riordan, the author of the "Percy Jackson" book series, says that the search is underway to find a young actor to play "Percy Jackson" in the Disney+ TV series based on the books.  Actor Logan Lerman played the character in two "Percy Jackson" films for 20th Century Fox.

ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Actress/director Elizabeth Banks is developing an adult animated primetime series, "Bedrock," for Fox.  It would act as a sequel to the 1960s primetime animated television series, "The Flintstones."

OSCARS - From Deadline:  The Oscar ratings turned out to be not quite as bad as initially thought.  Final numbers say 10.4 million viewed - still the all-time lowest.

From Deadline:   The 93rd Academy Awards had the all-time lowest Oscar telecast ratings ever - by a huge margin.  For the first time, the estimated number of viewers was under ten million, specifically 9.85 million. [It was a terrible show, in my estimation - Leroy]

MOVIES - From Deadline:  "Another Round," the Danish film that just won the "Best Foreign Film" Oscar, will get an English-language remake.  It will possibly be a star vehicle for Oscar-winner Leonardo DiCaprio.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:   HBO releases a photographic image to announced that it's "Game of Thrones" prequel, "House of the Dragon" has gone into production and will launch in 2022.

MOVIES - From WeGotThisCovered:   There will reportedly be CGI creatures in "Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City," the upcoming reboot of the "Resident Evil" film franchise.

BOX OFFICE - From Variety:  The winner of the 4/23 to 4/25/21 weekend box office is "Mortal Kombat" with an estimated take of 22.5 million dollars.

From Deadline:  Former actor, child actor, singer and musician, Johnny Crawford, has died at the age of 75, Thursday, April 29, 2021.  Crawford was best known as a child actor for his co-starring role in the late ABC Western television series, "The Rifleman" (1958-63).  Crawford played "Mark McCain," the son of "Lucas McCain," played by the series' star, the late Chuck Connors.  Crawford was the brother of child actor Robert L. "Bobby" Crawford, Jr. ("Laramie") and the son of film editor Robert L. Crawford, Sr.  Crawford was also one of the original "Mouseketeers" that appeared on "The Mickey Mouse Club" (1955-59) TV series, although Crawford only appeared in the first season.  Crawford also received a 1959 Emmy nomination for his role on "The Rifleman."

From Deadline:  Philanthropist and former publicist, Anne Douglas, has died at the age of 102, Thursday, April 29, 2021.  Douglas was married to legendary actor Kirk Douglas from 1954 until his death in February 2020.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Edgar Wright ("Baby Driver") will co-write and direct a new film adaptation of Stephen King's 1982 novel, "The Running Man" (published under the pen name Richard Bachman).  It will not be a remake of the 1987 film adaptation of the novel, which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Thanks to various sexual harassment and misconduct allegations, Hollywood power house, Brett Ratner, has not directed a film since 2014's Hercules.  He is ready to make his comeback with a biopic of disgraced musical act, "Milli Vanilli."

From YahooSports:   Former NFL player, Vincent Jackson, has died at the age of 38, Monday, February 15, 2021.  He was found dead in a hotel in Brandon, a suburb of Tampa, Florida.  He played 12 years in the NFL as a wide receiver, first for the San Diego Chargers (2005-2011) and then, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers (2012-2016).  He was a three-time Pro Bowl player (2009-2011).

STAR TREK - From Deadline:  Paramount Pictures new film chief, Emma Watts, is trying to figure out the direction of the "Star Trek" film franchise.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Lionsgate has announced a fifth installment of the "John Wick" film franchise.  It will be shot back-to-back with the previously announced "John Wick 4."

MOVIES - From Deadline:  A federal judge has given the U.S. Justice Department permission to terminate the "Paramount Consent Decrees."  This will allow movie studios once again to take significant ownership stakes in movie theater chains for the first time since the late 1940s.

ANIMATION - From BleedingCool:  Hulu's revival of the animated series, "Animaniacs," debuts November 20th.

From Deadline:  American film producer and studio executive, Tom Pollock, has died at the age of 77, Saturday, August 1, 2020.  He was the chairman of Universal Pictures from 1986 to 1995.  During his tenure, Universal released numerous box office hits and Academy Award winning and nominated films including "Jurassic Park" (1993) and "Schindler's List" (1993).  Pollock was also an entertainment lawyer and he negotiated the deal that gave George Lucas sequel and merchandising rights to Lucas' film, "Star Wars" (1977), rights that normally remained with the movie studio, in this case 20th Century Fox.

From Deadline:  The actor and television advertising pitchman, Wilford Brimley, has died at the age of 85, Saturday, August 1, 2020.  Brimley is best known for appearing in such film, as "The China Syndrome" (1979), "The Thing" (1982), "Tender Mercies" (1983), and "The Natural" (1984), and "The Firm" (1993).  He was also the longtime face of television ads the Quaker Oats Company.  He promoted diabetes education and appeared in diabetes related ads for the medical home-delivery service Liberty Mutual.

The reality show-spoofing “Real Husbands of Hollywood” chronicles newly divorced comedian Kevin Hart and his Hollywood pals as they navigate their way through stardom alongside – or in spite of – their famous wives. Season 5 of the hit mockumentary stars Kevin Hart, Nelly, Nick Cannon, Cynthia Kaye McWilliams as Trina Shaw; with special appearances from JB Smoove, Boris Kodjoe, Duane Martin and Jackie Long. High wattage guest stars include Nia Long, Keke Palmer, Tyga, LeToya Luckett, and Faizon Love. Kevin Hart also makes his directorial debut this season. Kevin Hart serves as Executive Producer along with Jesse Collins, Ralph Farquhar, Stan Lathan, Chris Spencer, and Dave Becky.

Now he’s bringing his own interracial and blended family to BET in a 30-minute unscripted series that is colorful, truthful and hysterical. Gary is constantly pushing the limits of what is politically correct when it comes to kids in small-town Ohio. Gary Owen executive produces alongside Bunim/Murray Productions' Gil Goldschein, Jeff Jenkins and Andrea Metz. LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--It was a night full of electrifying performances, emotional speeches and unforgettable moments at the “BET Awards” '14 -- also known as the "Black World Cup," according to hilarious host Chris Rock -- which aired live from the Nokia Theatre at L.A. LIVE on Sunday, June 29.

Pharrell Williams opened the show with an energetic rendition of "Come Get It Bae" surrounded by a bevy of cheerleaders, and was joined by surprise performer and fellow Virginia native, the amazing Missy Elliott, who brought the crowd to their feet to "Pass That Dutch." Williams became a familiar face on the stage after winning both "Best Male R&B/Pop Artist" and "Video of the Year," and again coming on to present music icon Lionel Richie with the Lifetime Achievement Award. Young Money and Beyoncé took home the most trophies with three awards, as did acclaimed film “12 Years A Slave” which swept the film award categories. Pharrell Williams and August Alsina each won two awards.

The tribute to Richie included a presentation of classics "Hello" and "Still" by John Legend and a pulsating rendition of "Brick House" by Ledisi. Just before Richie came on stage to accept his award, Yolanda Adams delivered a soulful, inspired performance of "Jesus Is Love," bringing the crowd to its feet (and some to tears!) and prompting Richie to admit he was "glad [he] sang the song first." Richie showed off his own skills when he sat at the piano and serenaded the audience with "Easy," then got the crowd dancing along to "All Night Long."

Chris Brown made a triumphant return to the “BET Awards” stage that drew a standing ovation. He proved he hasn't missed a beat delivering an incredible performance of "Loyal," which was amped up even more with appearances by Lil Wayne, Tyga and Travis Barker.

Always one to get the crowd going, Lil Wayne got the mosh pit popping with "Krazy" and "Believe Me." Jennifer Hudson showed off her incredibly powerful pipes during a performance of "Walk It Out" and debut of her new single "It's Your World" as a disco roller derby swirled around her. One of today's hottest rising stars, Jhené Aiko joined John Legend on stage for one of the most impressive performances of the evening.

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of his first album, Usher performed an action-packed medley of his biggest hits, including "Yeah!" "Confessions," "Caught Up" and "Love In This Club," which drew a standing ovation. Nicki Minaj gave an dramatic Alice In Wonderland-inspired performance of "Chi-Raq" and "Pills N Potions," filling the stage with oversized mushrooms, a contemporary dancer and a white rabbit.

T.I. showed off his lyrical prowess with "No Mediocre," while Iggy Azalea wowed the crowd with her skills with her hit single "Fancy." Fan and crowd favorite August Alsina, whose earlier performance alongside Trey Songz and Chris Brown drew squeals from all of the ladies in the house, took home the Coca-Cola Viewers' Choice Award. Robin Thicke gave a mesmerizing performance of "Forever Love," while surprise performers Troop, Color Me Badd and Silk scored huge cheers, as each group took the stage for their biggest hits for a '90s throwback medley of "All I Do Is Think of You," "I Wanna Sex You Up" and "Freak Me."

Presenter Kerry Washington, making her first television appearance since giving birth to daughter Isabelle in April, got in on the night's fun with co-presenter Kevin Hart, who tried to convince the crowd that he was, in fact, Oliver Pope, a reference to Kerry's alter-ego Olivia Pope on her hit show "Scandal."

Review: "Ice Age: Continental Drift" - Same Old, Same Good

The subject of this movie review is Ice Age: Continental Drift, a 2012 computer-animated film from Blue Sky Studios and 20th Century Fox. This comedy-adventure movie is the fourth film in the Ice Age series. Continental Drift follows the original Ice Age trio of Manny, Diego, and Sid after they are separated from the rest of the herd.

As Ice Age: Continental Drift begins, the herd is living in peace in the vast land they call home. Manfred “Manny” the mammoth (Ray Romano) is at odds with his teenage daughter, Peaches (Keke Palmer), with mother, Ellie (Queen Latifah), caught in the middle. Family strife isn’t the only rumbling in the land. The continents are dividing, and an earthquake separates Manny, Sid the giant sloth (John Leguizamo), and Diego the saber-toothed tiger (Denis Leary) from Ellie and the rest of the herd.

Lost at sea, Manny, Sid, and Diego begin an epic journey to reunite with the herd, their family. Standing in their way are a vicious primate, Captain Gutt (Peter Dinklage), and his band of pirates, who sale the seas using a floating iceberg as their ship. Meanwhile, the prehistoric squirrel/rat, Scrat (Chris Wedge), continues to chase that acorn.

I expected Ice Age: Continental Drift to be more of the same when it comes to the Ice Age franchise, but that is not a bad thing, anyway. The Ice Age films have been entertaining, if not great, because the franchise’s shtick is both funny and familiar. Each Ice Age film is basically a prehistoric, domestic situation comedy featuring talking animals, and the situation always involves some adventurous mission.

Still, Continental Drift offers its own inventive high points: icebergs as pirate ships, a group of tricky sirens, and Scrat’s treasure hunt come to mind. Captain Gutt and his pirates are, in my estimation, the series’ scariest villains to date, with Peter Dinklage giving a wonderful, layered voice performance. The film actually has a number of good voice performances. Wanda Sykes delivers her funniest voiceover as Sid’s Granny, and Jennifer Lopez is just shockingly good as Shira, a saber-toothed tiger and one of Gutt’s crew.

Continental Drift underutilizes some characters, such as Louis the mole hog (Josh Gad), Peaches’ love-interest-of-sorts. Sometimes, the film is too laid back, but overall Ice Age: Continental Drift is quite good. I found myself laughing at and with the characters, and ultimately, I cared enough to cheer them on.
