From Variety: One of the most revered jazz singers of the 20th century, Nancy Wilson, has died at the age of 81, Thursday, December 13, 2018. Wilson, who won three Grammys and recorded more than 70 albums, also had a 1974-75 NBC variety series, "The Nancy Wilson Show." She was also a frequent guests on variety shows hosted by Carol Burnett, Andy Williams, and Flip Wilson.
From Variety: The actress Sondra Locke died at the age of 74, November 3, 2018. She received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination for her first movie role in the film, "The Heart is a Lonely Hunter." She is probably best known for her association with Clint Eastwood. She appeared in several of his films, including as a murderous, vengeful rape victim in "Sudden Impact." Locke also had a romantic relationship with Eastwood that was quite contentious.

The subject of this movie review is Bring It On, a 2000 high school sports comedy from director Peyton Reed. The film spawned four direct-to-DVD sequels and a stage musical. Bring It On (the original film) focuses on a head cheerleader who makes a shocking discovery just before the upcoming cheerleading championship tournament: the previous captain of her high school’s cheerleading squad stole their best cheer routines from an inner-city school.
All-American girl Torrance Shipman (Kirsten Dunst) sees her dream finally come true. She is now the head cheerleader of the Rancho Carne Toros, at her high school in suburban San Diego. The Toros have won The Nationals of the high school cheerleading championship the last five years, and Torrance is not about to let anything – her parents, her little brother, her grades, or her college future – get in the way of a sixth consecutive title.
The big shocker comes when Torrance learns that her predecessor was stealing the routines that earned the Toros their reputation from an inner-city high school hip-hop cheerleading squad, the Clovers of East Compton. And the Clovers and their captain, Isis (Gabrielle Union), are looking to get even with the Toros at the 2000 Nationals. Now, Torrance and her Toros are going to have to learn all-new routines, all while dealing with the trials and tribulations of high school life.
Bring It On was a hit with ‘tweens, teens, and 20-somethings back in 2000. Although it’s competently directed and the writing doesn’t do much in the character department, the Machiavellian-lite, cutthroat world of competitive youth events, in this case, the world of competitive cheerleading, provides this movie’s fireworks. It’s fun to watch the catfights, preening dumb jocks, and every kid with a smart aleck attitude.
The cheerleading performances, from the practices to the championship, are rousing enough to make you stand up and cheer. The acting isn’t all that great, and the script doesn’t give the black cheerleaders enough room to show that there is actually character behind their sass. Kirsten Dunst’s performance is serviceable for this flick, and Eliza Dushku’s hot babe, Missy Pantone, makes what started out as a dull Disney-like teen movie into a real movie the moment she struts on stage.

Batman: Year One is a 2011 direct-to-video superhero animated film from Warner Bros. Animation. Starring the DC Comics character, Batman, this is also the 12th feature in the DC Universe Animated Original Movies line. Executive produced by Bruce Timm, this film is adapted from the “Batman: Year One” story arc written by Frank Miller (300) and drawn by David Mazzuchelli and originally published in the comic book series, Batman #404-407 (February to May 1987 cover date).
As the film opens, Bruce Wayne (Ben McKenzie) returns to Gotham City after a 12-year absence from his hometown. Meanwhile, policeman detective James Gordon (Bryan Cranston) and his pregnant wife, Barbara (Grey DeLisle), move to Gotham from Chicago. Gordon quickly discovers how corrupt the Gotham City Police Department is after meeting his new partner, Detective Arnold Flass (Fred Tatasciore), who savagely assaults civilians and accepts bribes from the mob. Commissioner Gillian B. Loeb (Jon Polito) seems more like a kingpin of crime than a police commissioner.
Bruce Wayne has decided to fight the street crime that took his parents lives and to put an end to the corruption of the city’s elites. Wayne’s first mission in his war on crime goes badly, but he is soon inspired to put on a weird costume that strikes fear into the hearts of criminals. Soon, the media is calling this mysterious vigilante figure, “The Batman.” Inspired by The Batman, Selina Kyle (Eliza Dushku), a prostitute, puts on a costume and becomes The Catwoman.
After watching the first 10 minutes of Batman: Year One, I didn’t hold out much hope that it would amount to much. However, it turned out to be a very entertaining film. The animation is good, not great, but the script is excellent. The writing captures the motivations of the characters and hits the conflicts dead center. It makes clear the reasons for disputes and the consequences that will result depending on how these clashes are settled. The conflicts, personal strife, and internal battles drive the drama in Batman: Year One.
When it comes to Batman: Year One, the Dark Knight rises, indeed.

NEW YORK and NEW ORLEANS, October 3, 2012 – It has been 25 years since “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” hit the air. Now, seven main members of that historic show will reunite as Patrick Stewart (Captain Jean-Luc Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi), Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data) and Gates McFadden (Dr. Beverly Crusher) will attend Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con, Nov. 30 - Dec. 2 at New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
The series, which ran for seven seasons from 1987 through 1994, garnered 18 daytime Emmys and was a hugely successful follow-up to the original “Star Trek” from two decades earlier. The seven stars are also scheduled to appear at this month's Austin Comic Con in what would be the first gathering of the group in the U.S. since “TNG” first aired.
Stewart is scheduled to appear on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 1-2, while the rest of the cast is slotted for attendance all three days. Weekend fans will have the unique opportunity to pose for a photo op with all seven actors.
Other standouts on the Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con celebrity roster include comics legend Stan Lee, “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” star Eliza Dushku, Reservoir Dogs headliner Michael Madsen and WWE® Superstar CM Punk®. Wil Wheaton Joins Wizard World Austin's Star Trek TNG Reunion
Eighth Cast Member To Join 25-Year 'TNG' Reunion At Austin Convention Center, October 26-28
Wil Wheaton, who starred as a teenager in the classic coming-of-age film Stand By Me in 1986 and a year later earned an important role in “Star Trek: The Next Generation,” will appear at next month's Wizard World Austin Comic Con. Wheaton joins seven other “TNG” cast members in a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the start of the landmark series, Oct. 26-28 at the Austin Convention Center.
Wheaton portrayed Wesley Crusher, son of Dr. Beverly Crusher (played by Gates McFadden) in the show. Other fellow “TNG” cast members scheduled for Austin include Patrick Stewart (Capt. Picard), Jonathan Frakes (Commander William T. Riker), LeVar Burton (Lt. Commander Geordi La Forge), Michael Dorn (Lieutenant Worf), Marina Sirtis (Counselor Deanna Troi) and Brent Spiner (Lt. Commander Data).

Gillian Anderson of "The X-Files" at Wizard World New Orleans

Viewers of “The X-Files” were told to “Trust No One” and to “Deny Everything.” Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con attendees, on the other hand, can trust that Gillian Anderson, who starred as “Agent Dana Scully” in the popular Fox TV show, will be appearing at Wizard World New Orleans Comic Con, and confirm that she will be attending on Saturday, December 1, and Sunday, December 2, at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.
Anderson an award-winning film, television, and theatre actress whose other credits include the ill-fated socialite “Lily Bart” in Terence Davies' masterpiece The House of Mirth (2000) and “Lady Dedlock” in the very successful BBC production of Charles Dickens' “Bleak House.”
In 2003, she won the Whatsonstage.com Theatregoers' Choice Best Actress Award for her West End debut in Michael Weller's two-hander “What the Night Is For.” The following year, she starred in Rebecca Gilman's play “The Sweetest Swing in Baseball” which ran at London's Royal Court Theatre from March 25 through May 15, 2004. From May 14 through July 18, 2009, she played Nora in a new version of Ibsen's “A Doll's House” at the Donmar Warehouse in London. She received a Laurence Olivier Nomination for her performance.
