Comics Review: Disney's "DARKWING DUCK #4" and the Villain Team-Up

DARKWING DUCK VOLUME 2 #4
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Daniel Kibblesmith
ART: Ted Brandt & Ro Stein
COLORS: Dearbhla Kelly
LETTERS: Jeff Eckleberry
EDITOR: Nate Cosby
COVER: Tad Stones
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Mark Bagley; Ted Brandt & Ro Stein; Nicoletta Baldari; Ciro Cangialosi
32pp, Color, $4.99 U.S. (May 2025)

Rated “All Ages”

“Year One” Part Four of Twelve: “Small Time Kooks!”

“Darkwing Duck” was an animated superhero comedy television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation.  It originally aired for three seasons (for a total of 91 episodes) from 1991 to 1992, both as part of the syndicated programming block, “The Disney Afternoon,” and as part of ABC's Saturday morning lineup.  “Darkwing Duck” focused on a suburban duck, Drake Mallard of St. Canard, and his superhero alter-ego, “Darkwing Duck.”  The character was a parody of the pulp fiction vigilante character, The Shadow, and his alter-ego, Kent Allard.

A little over two years ago, Dynamite Entertainment launched a new Darkwing Duck comic book series.  Now, it has recently relaunched the series with Darkwing Duck Volume 2.  It is written by Daniel Kibblesmith; drawn by Ted Brandt & Ro Stein; and colored by Dearbhla Kelly; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  The new series revisits Darkwing Duck's first year as a superhero with Launchpad McQuack at his side and a newly-adopted daughter, Gosalyn, to keep out of trouble.

Darkwing Duck Volume 2 #4 (“Small Time Kooks!”) opens on an island off the coast of St. Canard.  That's where Darkwing Duck (“DW”) and Launchpad take on the the villain, Steelbeak.  Later, at the home of Drake Mallard, our hero and his daughter squabble over this evening's plan.  Gosalyn wants to go to “Jack and Quacker's Family Fun Arcade.”  DW wants to attend a three-hour lecture about the “History of Fingerprint Analysis.”  Fate, however, brings DW, Launchpad, and Gosalyn to the arcade.

What the family doesn't know is that the arcade is actually a front for the lair of two kooky villains, the jester-like Quackerjack and Lillyput Gooney, who talks to and controls ants and who also has a shrink-ray gun.  Quackerjack and Lillyput need to kidnap an ordinary family to use as bait in their trap to capture Darkwing Duck, and they think they've found the perfect family...

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Darkwing Duck Volume 2, Issue #4, one of a few Darkwing Duck comic books that I have ever read.

In a series that has been very sharp during its short run, Darkwing Duck #4 is the sharpest of all, so far.  Writer Daniel Kibblesmith unleashes a pleasurable torrent of witty asides that kept me laughing.  Also, with this story, he has written what may be among the best examples of shrinking in Disney storytelling since the film, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids (1989).

The art team of illustrators Ted Brandt & Ro Stein and colorist Dearbhla Kelly once again offer a spry chapter of storytelling that sparks on the page with adventure and humor.  Brandt & Stein continue to capture the Disney graphical aesthetic that is both traditional and fresh.  Kelly's coloring is the final element that makes me believe that I am reading not just a Disney comic book, but a classic Disney comic book.  Letterer Jeff Eckleberry always strikes the right tone for the story with his wonderful sound effects, captions, and word balloons.

I hope that Dynamite can find continued success with its Darkwing Duck comic books.  There is an audience for this title, and it could be you, dear readers.  It is pure comic book fun.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Darkwing Duck will want to try Dynamite's new Darkwing Duck Volume 2 comic book series.

Hit Animated Film, ParaNorman, Returns for Halloween with a New Animated Short

LAIKA’S ParaNorman Returns to the Big Screen in Remastered RealD 3D for Exclusive Halloween Run Featuring a Brand-New CG Short Film Starring Anna Kendrick and Finn Wolfhard

Limited engagement includes the world premiere of ParaNorman: The Thrifting

Following the record-breaking 2024 re-release of Coraline, LAIKA once again partners with Fathom Entertainment and Trafalgar Releasing to bring this Halloween event to the global moviegoing audience original LAIKA to Re-Release ParaNorman.

LAIKA to Re-Release ParaNorman.

A Blu-ray collection of Laika's biggest films can be found at Amazon.

ANNECY, France & HILLSBORO, Ore. & DENVER & LONDON--(BUSINESS WIRE)--LAIKA’s award-winning stop-motion animated film ParaNorman returns this Halloween for a one-week theatrical engagement.

As with the record-breaking 15th Anniversary 2024 re-release of Coraline in 2D and RealD 3D, LAIKA will bring the gloriously remastered ParaNorman (originally released in 2012) to global audiences in partnership with Trafalgar Releasing in international markets premiering Thursday, October 23, 2025 and Fathom Entertainment in the US premiering Saturday, October 25, 2025.

LAIKA’s delightful second film, which garnered multiple awards including Oscar®, BAFTA® and Golden Globe nominations, as well as multiple ANNIE Awards®, was written by Chris Butler (Missing Link, ParaNorman) and directed by Butler and Sam Fell (Chicken Run: Dawn of the Nugget). Offered in stunning, newly remastered RealD 3D and 2D formats, ParaNorman’s return launches a year-long 20th Anniversary celebration of LAIKA, it was announced today at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival.

The studio’s new, CG animated short film, ParaNorman: The Thrifting is directed by LAIKA’s lead character designer Thibault LeClercq and written by Chris Butler. The short features the voice work of "Stranger Things" star Finn Wolfhard and Anna Kendrick reprising her role of Norman’s older sister, Courtney Babcock. Produced in association with Passion Pictures, ParaNorman: The Thrifting will be attached to the re-release screenings.

Coraline’s re-release success last year signaled an audience desire for repertory cinema as moviegoers re-discover older films, especially accessible horror titles that families can enjoy together. Coraline’s return scored $56M in worldwide box office, making it one of the biggest global film re-releases of the past decade and the highest grossing stop-motion movie of all time.

“ParaNorman was a breakthrough film for LAIKA -- emotionally rich, visually daring, and proudly weird in all the right ways,” said LAIKA’s Chief Marketing & Operations Officer David Burke. “Bringing it back to theaters in stunning remastered 3D, paired with a brand-new short film, is an invitation for audiences to rediscover the heart and humor of Norman’s world -- or experience it for the first time. Today, horror has become a shared family ritual, and ParaNorman sits right at the intersection of spooky and meaningful. It’s the perfect ‘starter horror’ -- a gateway into genre storytelling that’s as thoughtful as it is thrilling.”

”Fathom is very pleased to extend our distribution partnership with LAIKA and bring the critically acclaimed ParaNorman back to US audiences this Halloween in both 2D and RealD 3D and with the exclusive consumer added value feature, ParaNorman: The Thrifting,” said Ray Nutt, Fathom Entertainment’s Chief Executive Officer. “Coraline consumers voted with their wallets last year, resulting in approximately 70% of the record-breaking $34M+ U.S. theatrical box office coming in 3D. ParaNorman is the ideal, spooky follow-up for audiences to enjoy on the big screen later this year.”

“Following the incredible global response to Coraline's theatrical re-release, which surpassed its original box office run in some international markets, we’re thrilled to partner with LAIKA once again to bring ParaNorman back to the big screen this Fall,” said Kymberli Frueh, SVP of Programming and Content Acquisitions at Trafalgar Releasing. “ParaNorman is a visually stunning, emotionally resonant film that deserves to be experienced in theaters -- both in 2D and in vividly remastered RealD 3D. We can’t wait for audiences around the world to rediscover this groundbreaking stop-motion classic.”

Review: "FRIDAY THE 13TH: A New Beginning" Fumbles a Chance to Be New and Good

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 27 of 2025 (No. 2033) by Leroy Douresseaux

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning (1985)
Running time:  92 minutes
MPAA – R
DIRECTOR:  Danny Steinmann
WRITERS:  Martin Kitrosser & David Cohen and Danny Steinmann; based on story by Martin Kitrosser & David Cohen
PRODUCER: Timothy Silver
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Stephen L. Posey
EDITOR:  Bruce Green
COMPOSER:  Harry Manfredini

HORROR

Starring: Melanie Kinnaman, John Shepherd, Shavar Ross, Richard Young, Marco St. John, Carol Locatell, Ron Sloan, Tiffany Helm, Jerry Pavlon, Jere Fields, John Robert Dixon, Miguel A. Nunez, Jr., Debisue Voorhees, Dick Wieand, Dominick Brascia, Bob De Simone, Vernon Washington, and Corey Feldman

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is a 1985 slasher horror film from director Danny Steinmann.  It is a direct sequel to the 1984 film, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, and is the fifth movie in the Friday the 13th movie franchise.  A New Beginning focuses on a young man who has a connection to Jason Voorhees and who is now living in an area beset by a series of brutal murders that resemble the work of Voorhees.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning begins with 12-year-old Tommy (Corey Feldman) facing the monster, Jason Voorhees, again.  Now, in the present day, teenage Tommy Jarvis (John Shepherd), still haunted by his past, has departed the “Unger Institute for Mental Health.”  He is being transported to “Pinehurst Youth Development Center,” where he will receive treatment.

Managed by its director, Dr. Matthew Letter (Richard Young), and assistant director, Pam Roberts (Melanie Kinnaman), the center works on the “honor system” and gives its patients more freedom in their mental health journey.  Tommy learns just how different Pinehurst is when he encounters a kid, Reggie the Reckless (Shavar Ross), who hangs around because his grandfather, George (Vernon Washington), is the center's cook.

Not long after Tommy arrives, however, a shocking and savage killing occurs at Pinehurst.  That seems to kick off a brutal series of murders in the area.  As the bodies pile-up, the area's top law enforcement official, Sheriff Tucker (Marco St. John), believes that Jason Voorhees is the killer.  But Tommy Jarvis, as a 12-year-old boy, killed Jason (as seen in Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter), didn't he?

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning was apparently going to be the first in a new trilogy of Friday the 13th films featuring a different villain.  Disappointing box office returns, however, meant that Jason returned as the villain in the series' sixth film, Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives (1986).  Thus, A New Beginning remains only the second film in the series in which Jason Voorhees is not the main villain.  The original film, Friday the 13th (1980), features (spoiler alert) Jason's mother, Mrs. (Pamela) Voorhees, as the killer.

Like the fourth film, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter, A New Beginning has a high body count.  I counted at least 15 people murdered.  Like many of the films in the series, A New Beginning has an interesting menagerie of eccentric characters, many worth exploring, but all of them exist in the story in order to be murder victims or almost-murder victims.

This film's plot and narrative bounces around so that various characters can be killed.  For me, the most interesting thing about this film is that it features some character actors whom I encounter in film and television from time to time.  They are Shavar Ross, Marco St. John, and Miguel A. Nunez, Jr.

Friday the 13th: A New Beginning has an interesting plot, characters, and setting, and the film's prologue or opening scene is surprisingly eerie and weird.  This film in not really suspenseful, and it wants to be vulgar and raunchy as much as it is brutal and crude.  Of course, it certainly is brutal and crude.  Friday the 13th: A New Beginning is a beginning that deserved to end after one film... but it could have been something better.

Comics Review: "STAR WARS #2" - Luke Skywalker Raises His Pimp Hand

“Smoke”

In 2015, Marvel Comics began publishing Star Wars comic books again.  Marvel's new Star Wars #1 opened in the time immediately after the events depicted in the original film, Star Wars (1977).  After 75 issues, that series ended.  In late 2019, the next new Star Wars ongoing series (cover date: 2020) debuted and focused on the aftermath of the events depicted in the second original Star Wars film, The Empire Strikes Back.  It ended in 2024 after 50 issues.

Now, ten years after returning to the publication of Star Wars comic book series, Marvel has another Star Wars #1.  Its stories will be set after the events depicted in the third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983).  This new Star Wars comic book is written by Alex Segura; drawn and colored by Phil Noto; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

Star Wars finds Luke Skywalker leading a mission near “Fenril Sector” in order to stop a band of pirates from looting New Republic supply shops.  On Chandrila – the provisional capital of New Republic, Princess Leia and Mon Mothma unsuccessfully attempt to negotiate an alliance with the planets of the Fenril Sector.  On the Outer Rim planet of Guat'a, Han Solo and the bounty hunter, Beilert Valance, battle the “Zantarrk Gang.”

Star Wars #2 (“Smoke”) opens on an unnamed planet near the Fenril Sector.  There, Luke and fellow pilot, Rynn Senat, have just had a strange experience with what was supposed to be a pirate.  For Luke, however, the pirate pilot and the experience are even stranger.  His words send Luke on a mission to the planet, Gadrilam, where the pilots says Luke must find, Ibo Truddispal, a hoarder of artifacts, including Jedi artifacts.

What tragedy awaits Luke on Gadrilam?  And who are the victims and who are the bad guys on this strange planet?

THE LOWDOWN:  I do not receive PDF or physical review copies of any titles published by Marvel.  I bought this new Star Wars comic book via Amazon Kindle slash comiXology, and it is not the first Star Wars comic book that I have read or reviewed.

Writer Alex Segura continues to weave a new narrative spin on the post-Return of the Jedi Star Wars universe.  If the recent Star Wars #1 was about hope, this second issue is about the new perils that our heroes face now and the dangers that are bound to come for them.  Segura continues to bury his cast in deep sh*t, but he makes it all seem like a wonderful world of adventure.  His characters, settings, and plot lines are genuine, as if they stepped right out of the original film trilogy.

Phil Noto's storytelling deftly depicts this most dangerous game that Luke is playing, and I'm here for it.  Noto presents page-turning thrills and chills that sent me careening to the last page.  Segura and Noto make a good creative team for Star Wars because they are willing to make it as dark and dangerous, but seem unwilling to make Star Wars a repeat of everything that came before this new iteration.  Also, Clayton Cowles' lettering is an exercise in low key graphics, telling the story with a sense of classic comics cool.

I continue to be pleasantly surprised by this new Star Wars comic book.  It feels like classic Star Wars that has found a new pathway to a galaxy of adventure.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Star Wars comic books will want to read the 2025 Star Wars comic book series.
