Meryl Streep to Receive the "Cecil B. deMille Award" at 74th Golden Globes
Meryl Streep is the recipient of the Cecil B. deMille Award of the 74th Golden Globes. With eight Golden Globes and 29 nominations, Meryl Streep is an icon of the performing arts. She will be honored with the 2017 Cecil B. deMille Award at the 74th Annual Golden Globe® Awards on Sunday, January 8, 2017, hosted by Jimmy Fallon. The 2017 Golden Globe Awards will air live coast-to-coast on NBC from 8:00-11:00 p.m. (EST)/5:00-8:00 p.m. (PST) from the Beverly Hilton Hotel.
Lorenzo Soria, President of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), made the announcement of Meryl Streep’s honor. Soria stated, "It’s no surprise that the HFPA has chosen Meryl Streep as the recipient of the 2017 Cecil B. DeMille Award. Meryl’s enthralling body of work across a diverse set of genres has made her a role model over the past 40 years, and she will continue to do so for generations to come. She has always taken roles with strong female leads, creating art by showing vulnerability and portraying truth on the big screen. Simply put, she is a trailblazer, having paved the way for women in television, film and stage. For shattering gender and age barriers, all with finesse and grace, the HFPA is humbled to bestow this honor upon her."
Chosen by the HFPA Board of Directors, the Cecil B. deMille Award is given annually to a talented individual for outstanding contributions to the world of entertainment. Recent recipients include Denzel Washington (2016), George Clooney (2015), Woody Allen (2014), Jodie Foster (2013), Morgan Freeman, (2012), Robert De Niro (2011), Martin Scorsese (2010), Steven Spielberg (2009), Warren Beatty (2007), Anthony Hopkins (2006), Robin Williams (2005), Michael Douglas (2004), Gene Hackman (2003), Harrison Ford (2002), Al Pacino (2001), and Barbra Streisand (2000).
For almost 40 years, Meryl Streep has portrayed an astonishing array of characters in a career that has cut its own unique path from the theater through film and television.
Streep was educated in the New Jersey public school system through high school, graduated cum laude from Vassar College, and received her MFA with honors from Yale University in 1975. She began her professional life on the New York stage, where she quickly established her signature versatility and verve as an actor. Within three years of graduation, she made her Broadway debut, won an Emmy (Holocaust) and received her first Oscar nomination (The Deer Hunter). In 2015, Streep was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role as The Witch in Into the Woods, marking her 29th recognition by the HFPA. In the same role, she earned her 19th Academy Award and Screen Actors Guild Award nominations. The three-time Academy Award-winner was recently seen in Stephen Frears’ Florence Foster Jenkins.
She is a member of the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and has been accorded a Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Government and an honorary César. She received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the American Film Institute, a 2008 honor from the Film Society of Lincoln Center, and the 2010 National Medal of Arts from President Obama. In 2011, Streep received a Kennedy Center Honor, and in 2014 the Presidential Medal of Freedom. She holds honorary doctorates from Yale, Princeton, Harvard, Dartmouth Indiana Universities, the University Of New Hampshire, Lafayette, Middlebury, and Barnard Colleges.

Hollywood Foreign Press Association Continues Support for Children's Hospital of Los Angeles
Hollywood Foreign Press Association® Awards $25,000 Grant to Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to Expand Entertainment Industry’s Role in Helping Heal Patients through the Arts
The Hospital's Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program Uses the Power of Art, Music, Dance and Drama to Help Patients Face Life-threatening Illness or Injury with Renewed Hope and Inspiration
LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA) is continuing its support for Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) with its second $25,000 grant to drive collaboration between the entertainment community and the hospital’s Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program. Facilitated by certified expressive arts therapists and partners in the community, the Artists Program uses music, dance, drama and the expressive arts to address the unique physical and emotional challenges faced by hospitalized infants, children, teens and young adults. The grant brings the HFPA’s total commitment to the Artists Program to $50,000.
“The result of two industries coming together for one cause is powerful, moving and inspiring. The HFPA is in awe of the hospital’s staff and the great lengths they go to every day to put a smile on a child’s face.”
In partnership with the hospital’s Hollywood Cares for Kids™ program, the Artists Program will utilize the grant to integrate professionals and artists in the entertainment industry into the program, drawing upon their distinct skillset to inspire, encourage and help patients through their medical journey. For example:
“CHLA is committed to treating the whole child, recognizing the critical role that a child’s spirit plays in the course of healing,” said Alex Field, manager, Mark Taper-Johnny Mercer Artists Program. “Through drama, music, dance, and the visual and expressive arts, we help children find ways to convey their emotions, ask questions they have not found the words to ask and feel a bit more in control of their lives. Young people can also discover a new talent, develop a new interest, or enjoy a form of art they have never experienced before, creating a budding life-long appreciation for the arts.”
CHLA was one of the many non-profits that benefited from the nearly $2.4 million dollars gifted on Aug. 4, 2016 by the HFPA, the organization widely known for hosting the Golden Globe Awards. The group annually donates grants to causes and efforts that the HFPA is committed to supporting, including entertainment-related non-profits, foundations and schools.
“The Hollywood Foreign Press Association unreservedly gives this grant to the Children’s Hospital Los Angeles to help nurture the relationship they have with the entertainment industry,” said HFPA President Lorenzo Soria. “The result of two industries coming together for one cause is powerful, moving and inspiring. The HFPA is in awe of the hospital’s staff and the great lengths they go to every day to put a smile on a child’s face.”
“The entertainment community has the capacity in many unique ways to positively impact the children we serve,” said Lyndsay Hutchison, director, Hollywood Cares for Kids program. “Whether the child is an aspiring artist or just facing a very tough road ahead, having the chance to work with an industry professional brings a level of encouragement and renewed excitement. From writers to animators to musicians and actors, the entertainment community offers a wide array of expertise in their respective fields, providing a tremendous asset in helping children find their voice.”
In addition to their emotional impact, the Artists Program has a physiological effect on children that contributes to healing. Research has shown that heart rates slow, blood pressure decreases, and the perception of pain declines when patients pick up a musical instrument, sing a song or see a live performance up close. In the hospital’s Newborn and Infant Critical Care Unit, staff members have reported the slowing of heart and pulse rates in premature infants upon the first musical note they hear, and mothers have found a new way to bond with babies they cannot yet hold by simply singing to them. At CHLA, the arts are indispensable to the therapeutic process, facilitating recovery and rehabilitation.
Established in 1901 as Southern California’s first hospital dedicated to the care of children, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles has grown alongside the Hollywood community for more than a century. In fact, CHLA moved to its current main campus on Sunset and Vermont in 1913, the same year the very first movie was filmed right down the street in Hollywood.
Today, Children’s Hospital Los Angeles is a leading nonprofit hospital for kids, ranked seventh in the nation and serving more than 111,000 patients annually from Los Angeles county and around the globe. CHLA provides specialized, compassionate care and services for everything that can affect a child or adolescent, from broken bones to the rarest diseases; from homelessness to gender non-conformity. CHLA is also a premier teaching and research hospital with more than 150 physician scientists hard at work to end the most devastating childhood disorders.
In the last fiscal year, our Artists Program impacted the lives of over 33,000 patients and family members. The program runs year-round, seven days per week, and can be found in individual patient rooms, group play areas and lounges, lobbies and even hallways of every floor. With a commitment to family-centered care, CHLA engages parents and caregivers in every stage of treatment. Parents can roll up their sleeves and cut-and-paste with their children, pick up an instrument, or simply sit back and enjoy a performance.
Members of the entertainment industry can learn more about artist program volunteer opportunities by emailing Lyndsay Hutchison at lhutchison@chla.usc.edu or call 323.361.4121.

The network garnered category nominations for “Outlander” for Best Television Series – Drama and “Flesh and Bone” for Best Television Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television.
“We are incredibly proud of our talented actors and producing partners who have been recognized for their achievements.”
This marks the first time the network has received nominations in all three television categories across drama, comedy and limited-series, including Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama for Caitriona Balfe in “Outlander,” Best Performance by an Actress in a Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for Sarah Hay in “Flesh and Bone,” Best Performance by an Actor in a Television Series – Musical or Comedy for Patrick Stewart in “Blunt Talk” and Best Performance by an actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series or Motion Picture Made for Television for Tobias Menzies in “Outlander.”
“Our thanks to the Hollywood Foreign Press Association for honoring STARZ with nominations for our series ‘Outlander’ and ‘Flesh and Bone’ and the performances of Catiriona Balfe, Sarah Hay, Patrick Stewart and Tobias Menzies,” said Starz CEO, Chris Albrecht. “We are incredibly proud of our talented actors and producing partners who have been recognized for their achievements.”
“Outlander,” currently in production on its second season which will return to STARZ in Spring 2016, is adapted from Diana Gabaldon’s international best-selling books and executive produced by Ronald D. Moore (“Battlestar Galactica,” “Star Trek: Deep Space Nine,” “Star Trek: The Next Generation”). The series spans the genres of romance, science fiction, history and adventure as it follows Claire Randall, a married WWII combat nurse who mistakenly falls back in time to 1743. “Outlander” is produced by Tall Ship Productions, Story Mining & Supply Company and Left Bank Pictures in association with Sony Pictures Television.
“Flesh and Bone,” a gritty eight-hour limited series created by Emmy® award-winning "Breaking Bad" writer and Executive Producer Moira Walley-Beckett, follows a young dancer with a distinctly troubled past as she joins a prestigious ballet company in New York. John Melfi (“House of Cards,” “Sex and the City”), Lawrence Bender (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Pulp Fiction” and “Good Will Hunting”) and Kevin Brown ("Roswell”) are Executive Producers. Australian filmmaker David Michôd (“Animal Kingdom,” “Rover”) directed the first episode.
