Comic Book Nominees for "Dwayne McDuffie Award 2019" Announced

Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids' Comics Announces 2019 Shortlist

Kids Read Comics has announced the shortlist for the annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics, which will be handed out at the Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival on June 14, 2019.

The award honors the pioneering comics and animation writer who cofounded Milestone Media and created the teen superhero Static among others. Judges seek out excellent comics aimed at school-aged children and young teens and score the work on four main criteria: Quality, Timelessness, Originality and Diversity.

After reviewing scores of books published in 2018, the judges narrowed the field to a list of ten that showcase today’s amazing variety of comics for young readers: books that cover a wide range of topics from many viewpoints and in distinct voices.

On this year’s shortlist are:

Be Prepared, by Vera Brosgol, sends young Vera, a Russian girl living in an American suburb, to summer camp—Russian summer camp, the only one her single mom can afford and the one where she just might be able to fit in,

The Cardboard Kingdom, by Chad Sell, follows a neighborhood of kids who transform ordinary cardboard into fantastical homemade costumes as they explore conflicts with friends, family, and their own identity.

Hidden Witch, by Molly Knox Ostertag, continues the story of Asler, hero of The Witch Boy, as he takes magic lessons from his grandmother and tries to help his non-magical friend Charlie escape from a curse that's trying to attach itself to her.

Last Pick, by Jason Walz, takes readers to an earth overrun by alien invaders, where only those too young, too old, or too "disabled" have been spared from abduction...but maybe the kids last picked can step up and start a revolution.

Lumberjanes: The Infernal Compass, by Lilah Sturges and polterink, finds the Janes separated during an orienteering outing, thanks to a mysterious compass that others very much want to lay their hands on.

My Beijing: Four Stories of Everyday Wonder, by Nie Jun, introduces Yu'er and her grandpa, who live in a small neighborhood in Beijing that's full of big personalities—with a story around every corner and a hint of magic each day.

Onibi: Diary of a Yokai Ghost Hunter, by Atelier Sento, transports readers to the places where natural and supernatural meet, as it explores some of the lesser-known parts of Japan in a story that is part fantasy and part travelogue.

Peter & Ernesto: A Tale of Two Sloths, by Graham Annable, tells the story of two best friends who are nothing alike—Peter loves their tree and never wants to leave, while Ernesto loves the sky and wants to see it from every place on earth.

The Prince and the Dressmaker, by Jen Wang, finds Prince Sebastian hiding a secret life―taking Paris by storm wearing fabulous dresses as the Lady Crystallia―and relying on the brilliant young dressmaker Frances, who guards his secret but has dreams of her own.

Sanity & Tallulah, by Molly Brooks, features best friends who live on a dilapidated space station at the end of the galaxy―but when Sanity creates a definitely-illegal-but-impossibly-cute three-headed kitten, the havoc it wreaks may mean the end of their outer space home.

This year, the judges for the Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics are Faith Roncoroni, a high school English teacher and comics and anime club adviser; Tameshja Brooks, who works at Green Brain Comics, and Nola Pfau, managing editor for Women Write About Comics. They have been assisted by Edith Donnell, a Kids Read Comics cofounder and youth and teen librarian.

The full list of books considered for the award can be found at the end of this a2caf.com post.

Previous years' winners were Hilda and the Black Hound by Luke Pearson, Awkward by Svetlana Chmakova, Ghosts by Raina Telgemeier and The Tea Dragon Society by Katie O'Neill.

Nominations for 2019 titles can be made through January 31, 2020 by emailing mcduffiekidsaward@gmail.com.

Kids Read Comics is a Michigan-based nonprofit that hosts the annual Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival in collaboration with the Ann Arbor District Library. A2CAF is a free, weekend event for kids, teens and adults that features over 60 artists and writers and a full slate of interactive programs including many hands-on workshops. Guests at the 2019 show include comics artists and writers Jerry Craft (New Kid), Wendy and Richard Pini (Elfquest), Lucy Knisley (Kid Gloves: Nine Months of Careful Chaos), Raúl the Third (¡Vamos! Let’s Go to The Market!), Judd Winick (Hilo), Joamette Gil (Power & Magic: The Queer Witch Comics Anthology), Ben Hatke (Zita the Spacegirl), and Raina Telgemeier (Share Your Smile).

A2CAF is immediately preceded by A2 Inkubate, a one-day conference for educators and librarians aimed at helping them use comics successfully in their professional settings, and includes cartoonists with whom they can collaborate in advocating for comics.

Al Jaffee to Be Honored at 2016 Baltimore Comic-Con

Al Jaffee to Receive Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - The Baltimore Comic-Con is September 2-4, 2016 at the Baltimore Convention Center, and will once again host the Harvey Awards on the evening of September 3, 2016. We are privileged to announce the addition of legendary MAD Magazine creator and industry luminary Al Jaffee for a special panel at the Baltimore Comic-Con and bestowal of the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award. Mr. Jaffee will be joining us on Saturday, September 2nd. Tickets for the show and awards ceremony are now available.

Al Jaffee, MAD Magazine cartoonist and creator of the celebrated fold-in cover, is a Guinness World Record holder with the longest career of a comics artist (over 73 years!). His early career was spent as an artist for Timely Comics and Atlas Comics, and later again working for Stan Lee again as an editor on Timely's humor and teenage comics, including the Patsy Walker titles. His syndicated strip, Tall Tales, was collected and published by Abrams in 2008, winning the 2009 Harvey Award for Best Cartoonist and the Special Award for Humor in Comics. After time spent at MAD Magazine, he followed Harvey Kurtzman to Trump and Humbug, the former of which was recently collected and reprinted by Dark Horse. After both efforts folded, Jaffee returned to MAD Magazine, where he continues to provide fold-in covers to this day.

His work can be most recently be found in Tall Tales from Abrams (2008), the MAD Fold-In Collection 1964-2010 from Chronicle Books (2011) and Al Jaffee's Mad Life by Mary-Lou Weisman (and illustrations by Al Jaffee) from HarperCollins (2010).

Al has received numerous awards that celebrate his long career. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2013. He has received the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 2008 as well as their Humor Comic Book Award in 1979. He was also Best Cartoonist in 2001 for his work on MAD Magazine. He has received the Sergio Award from the Comic Art Professional Society and the Inkpot Award at the San Diego Comic-Con.

"This is such a huge honor," said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "Not only to have such a giant among giants of the comics field at the show, but to be able to celebrate his storied career and contributions to the industry at the Harvey Awards ceremony. Robinson and Kyle Baker, it received worldwide critical acclaim and won a number of prestigious literary awards, including two Harvey Awards (Best Original Graphic Novel and Best Biographical, Historical, or Journalistic Presentation) and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Reality-Based Work. It is a Lambda Literary Finalist for Best LGBT Graphic Novel, an American Library Association Great Graphic Novel for Teens, and has been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives Permanent Collection. The Fifth Beatle is now being adapted into a multi-part TV event series that has secured unprecedented access to Beatles music. Vivek will be adapting his work for television and serving as executive producer.

Vivek has also just acquired the TV and film rights to Astronaut Academy, the middle-grade graphic novel series from bestselling author-illustrator Dave Roman (Agnes Quill), with plans to turn the books into both a live-action TV series and a film franchise, and talks are underway with writers, networks, and studios to adapt the coming-of-age adventure story set at a fantastical space station school.

Vivek's illustrated Young Adult novel Asha Ascending, with art by the award-winning Sara Richard (My Little Pony, Jem and The Holograms, Ghostbusters) is currently being serialized chapter-by-chapter free at AshaAscending.com. Taking place in a near-future where surgical implants access a virtual Internet, Asha Ascending follows teenage coder Asha Rai as she helps irresponsible party-boy Hal Haven save his mother's life, while they race against an evil faction to unlock the code to immortality.

"Hosting last year's Harvey Awards was the best night of my life in comics," said Tiwary, "I got to introduce beloved luminaries like Jules Feiffer and the late Darwyn Cooke, while honoring the creators of today's most inspiring work. But to quote Al Pacino -- 'I'm just getting warmed up!' See you in Baltimore!"

On Broadway, Tiwary's productions have won a combined 25 Tony Awards. They include such groundbreaking work as Green Day's American Idiot, The Addams Family, A Raisin In The Sun, and Mel Brooks' The Producers. Vivek is currently working with Alanis Morissette and Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner Tom Kitt to adapt Morissette's breakthrough album Jagged Little Pill for Broadway.

Vivek has served on the Board of Directors for Valiant Entertainment, a multi-platform company that boasts the third largest universe of comic book characters and has secured a 5-film deal with Sony Pictures.

Vivek held a number of major label music-industry positions working with artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Britney Spears.

In addition to hosting the awards ceremony, Vivek will be speaking on a panel and signing books throughout the weekend at the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Dark Horse Comics Celebrates 2016 Eisner Award for Fabio Moon and Gabriel Ba

Moon & Bá’s “Two Brothers” Wins Eisner for Best Adaptation

MILWAUKIE, OR — This past Friday, Fábio Moon and Gabriel Bá, the Eisner Award–winning and New York Times best-selling duo behind Neil Gaiman's How to Talk to Girls at Parties, received the Eisner Award for Best Adaptation from Another Medium for their critically acclaimed graphic novel Two Brothers.

Twin brothers Omar and Yaqub may share the same features, but they could not be more different from one another. After a brutally violent exchange between the young boys, Yaqub is sent from his home in Brazil to live with relatives in Lebanon, only to return five years later as a virtual stranger to the parents who bore him, his tensions with Omar unchanged. Family secrets engage the reader in this profoundly resonant story about identity, love, loss, deception, and the dissolution of blood ties.

Dark Horse also celebrated two awards shared with other publishers.

The award for Best Coloring went to Jordie Bellaire, for The Autumnlands, Injection, Plutona, Pretty Deadly, The Surface, They’re Not Like Us, Zero (Image); The X-Files (IDW); The Massive (Dark Horse); and Magneto, Vision (Marvel).

The winner in the Best Digital/Webcomic category was Bandette, by Paul Tobin and Colleen Coover (Monkeybrain/comiXology, collected in print by Dark Horse). A costumed teen burglar by the nome d’arte of Bandette and her group of street urchins find equal fun both in skirting and aiding the law. This is the second Eisner for Bandette following a win in 2013.

Artists Colleen Coover (Bandette) and Joëlle Jones (Lady Killer, Brides of Helheim) were the women with the most nominations in a record-breaking year for female creators, with three each. Dark Horse’s Lady Killer, by Jamie S. Rich and Joëlle Jones, was nominated for Best New Series, and Jones was also nominated for Best Penciller/Inker and Best Cover Artist. The book also shared a coloring nod for Laura Allred.

Dark Horse’s other nominees included Harrow County (Best New Series) and Nanjing: The Burning City (Best Graphic Album—New).

Named for acclaimed comics creator Will Eisner, the awards are celebrating their twenty-eighth year of highlighting the best publications and creators in comics and graphic novels.

Congratulations to all winners and nominees.

Additional praise for Fabio Moon and Gabriel Bá’s Two Brothers:

Beautiful, poignant.” —THE AV CLUB

"...come and see what flavor of genius the Brazilian-based brothers have crafted from the work of Milton Hatoum.” —COMICS BEAT

Beautifully rendered.” —PASTE MAGAZINE

Second Annula Dwayne McDuffie Awards Goes to "Awkward" by Svetlana Chmakova

Svetlana Chmakova’s AWKWARD Wins Dwayne McDuffie Award

The second annual Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics was presented to Svetlana Chmakova’s Awkward at the recent Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival (A2CAF).

Awkward tells a story that is very much of this moment but at the same time ageless—a story about the missteps of middle school, about rivalries and hurt feelings, and about the many twists and turns of friendship. Of the scores of comics from 2015 read by the judges, Chmakova’s book best met the four main criteria for selection: Quality, Timelessness, Originality and Diversity.

Those four values represent core concerns of Kids Read Comics, the nonprofit that sponsors A2CAF and the McDuffie Award. They also fit the man the award was named for. Dwayne McDuffie was a comics and animation writer, a winner of the Humanitas Prize, and the creator of Static, the teenaged superhero who first appeared in 1993, and Static Shock, the animated series based on the comic. McDuffie was an enthusiastic supporter of Kids Read Comics who believed in comics and believed in kids. He shared KRC’s belief that comics can expand young minds and change young lives for the better.

There is no more appropriate name to attach to an award that showcases the incredible variety of outstanding comics currently being created for kids and teens.

In accepting the award on video, Svetlana Chmakova said, “When I heard about the award, I was so happy to see that one of the four judging criteria was diversity. When I create my work, inclusion is something that’s always at the forefront of my mind. And not just because I think it’s actually overdue…but also because I was an immigrant, and I experienced it. I experienced inclusion.” Recapturing what that experience meant to her, she added, “I was a kid and it was so important.”

“While I’m truly, truly thankful to be the recipient of this year’s award,” Chmakova went on to say, “I’m even more thankful that this award exists.”

Judges for this year’s Dwayne McDuffie Award for Kids’ Comics were Edith Donnell, a Kids Read Comics cofounder and youth and teen librarian; Andrew Woodrow-Butcher, manager of Little Island Comics, a comic shop exclusively for kids; Eva Volin, a children’s librarian and comics-in-libraries advocate; and Marv Wolfman, a comics and animation writer and editor whose storied career goes back nearly half a century.

The Ann Arbor Comic Arts Festival is held annually at the Ann Arbor (Michigan) District Library, and features over fifty artists alley guests ranging from national bestselling authors and award winners—this year including Cece Bell, Kazu Kibuishi, Nathan Hale, Tom Angleberger and Ben Hatke—to teenaged cartoonists and even younger students from local cartooning classes. A2CAF programming focuses largely on hands-on workshops and interactive drawing games, allowing event attendees of all ages and skill levels to participate. The event attracts approximately 3,000 visitors each year.

Joe Sinnott, the award’s namesake and first recipient, made a statement in April regarding this year’s inductees:

“I was quite pleased to hear that the Inkwell Awards has selected two very deserving inkers into the Hall of Fame class of 2016: Frank Giacoia and Jose Rubinstein.

Frank was a fabulous inker and a good friend of mine, who left us much too soon. It was always a pleasure meeting up with Frank at shows and spending time with him. Frank’s smooth, thick line graced the pages of virtually every Marvel title. I really enjoyed Frank’s inking over Jack Kirby on Captain America. Like myself, we pretty much inked the Marvel Universe.

Joe is an outstanding inker and portrait artist as well.
I absolutely am honored by the great job he did in capturing my likeness for the cover of the 2nd Annual Joe Sinnott Inking Challenge. I once pencilled a piece that Joe inked for The Official Handbook of the Marvel Universe Index collection. At that time Joe was doing all these Marvel Universe books and he told me that he had actually worked on more Marvel characters than I had. Joe also did some great background inks on the Superman Vs. Spider-Man Treasury Edition that I inked over John Buscema.

It is wonderful that Frank and Joe are the recipients of the 2016 Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award. These two superb artists make the already great list of Hall of Famers even more elite.

Thank you to the Inkwell’s committee for electing them, and thanks to everyone for their continued support of the Inkwell Awards.

Joe Sinnott

In cooperation with Special Inkwell Ambassador and award-winning author J. David Spurlock, the ceremony kicked off with a special appearance by industry legend Jim Steranko who discussed the artform of comic-book inking, his related experiences in the medium, and its artists, including Joe Sinnott and Frank Giacoia. Inkwell Awards founder and director Bob Almond acted as both ceremony host and presenter, joined by hostess “Ms. Inkwell,” as portrayed by Holly Black. Artist Breno Tamura accepted Joe Prado’s award as a pre-recorded video of Prado’s acceptance speech was played. Guest speaker, artist-writer Mike Grell, spoke for Rubinstein. Writer Todd Dezago spoke for Giacoia, and statements from their respective families, including for Vince Colletta, were read. Silver Inkwell trophies were presented to three nomination committee members who served five years: Michele Witchipoo, Bob Bretall and Johnny B. Gerardy. All acceptance statements from the winners can be found in the “Results” section of the Inkwell Awards' website in the near future.

The Inkwell Awards is the only existing, official 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to educate and promote the art form of comic-book inking, as well as annually recognize and award the best ink artists and their work. The organization is overseen by a committee of industry professionals and assisted by various professional ambassadors and contributors. They sponsor the Dave Simons Inkwell Memorial Scholarship Fund for the Kubert School and host the Joe Sinnott Hall of Fame Award.

2016 Will Eisner Comic Industry Award Nominations Announced

The Will Eisner Comic Industry Awards, also simply know as the “Eisner Awards,” are awards annually given for creative achievement in American comic books.  The awards are named for pioneering comic book writer, artist, and publisher, Will Eisner.  Some consider the Eisner Awards to be the preeminent awards that honor American comic books, even referring to the awards as “the Oscars of comic books” (which is so obviously ridiculous).  A "judging panel" picks the nominees.  Eligible voters that meet certain professional criteria vote on winners.

The Eisner Awards also include the Comic Industry's Hall of Fame.  The Eisner Awards are associated with the annual Comic-Con International convention held in San Diego, California, in July.  The Eisner Awards have been given annually since 1988, with the exception of 1990.

The 2016 Eisner Award nominations were announced Tuesday, April 19, 2016.  They winners will be announced Friday, July 22, 2016 at a gala ceremony held during Comic-Con International 2016.

Of note, 49 women received a record 61 nominations.

The 2016 Eisner Awards judging panel consists of journalist/reviewer Brian Doherty, comics writer/editor Danny Fingeroth, retailer Jason Grazulis (BSI Comics, Metairie, LA), librarian Jason M.
