Dark Horse Comics Celebrates Two Wins at 2016 Harvey Awards

DARK HORSE TAKES HOME TWO HARVEY AWARDS

Two Brothers and Usagi Yojimbo Chosen as Industry Favorites

MILWAUKIE, Ore.—This past Saturday, Dark Horse Comics, the premier independent publisher in the industry, took home two awards at the 2016 Harvey Awards ceremony. Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon’s Two Brothers shared a win for Best American Edition of Foreign Material. Stan Sakai of Usagi Yojimbo fame was named Best Cartoonist.

The Harvey is one of the comic book industry’s oldest and most respected awards. Held annually at Baltimore Comic-Con, the Harvey Awards recognize outstanding achievements in more than twenty categories. The Harvey Awards are the only industry awards that are both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals.

Below is more information on Dark Horse’s winners:

Best American Edition of Foreign Material (Shared Win): Two Brothers, Gabriel Bá and Fábio Moon

Summary of Two Brothers:

Twin brothers Omar and Yaqub may share the same features, but they could not be more different from one another. After a brutally violent exchange between the young boys, Yaqub is sent from his home in Brazil to live with relatives in Lebanon, only to return five years later as a virtual stranger to the parents who bore him, his tensions with Omar unchanged. Family secrets engage the reader in this profoundly resonant story about identity, love, loss, deception, and the dissolution of blood ties.

Praise for Two Brothers:

"Two Brothers is one the best graphic novels of 2015 and deserves a space on the shelf of every serious fan of the medium."—Comic Book Resources

Best Cartoonist: Stan Sakai, Usagi Yojimbo

Stan Sakai began his career by simply lettering comic books as he perfected his art and began working in the industry. He also wrote and illustrated The Adventures of Nilson Groundthumper and Hermy; a comic series with a medieval setting, influenced by Sergio Aragones's Groo the Wanderer. The characters first appeared in Albedo #1 in 1984, and were subsequently featured in issues of Critters, GrimJack, Amazing Heroes and Furrlough. Stan Sakai became famous with the creation of Usagi Yojimbo, the epic saga of Miyamoto Usagi, a samurai rabbit living in late-sixteenth and early-seventeenth-century Japan.

Praise for Usagi Yojimbo:

One of the most original, innovative, well-executed comic books anywhere to be found.”—Stan Lee

Congratulations to all the talent honored at the 2016 Harvey Awards.

Baltimore Comic-Con Announces its 2016 Weapons Policy - Updated and Amended

New Baltimore Comic-Con Weapons Policy for 2016

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - The Baltimore Comic-Con will be held on September 2-4, 2016 at the Inner Harbor's Baltimore Convention Center.

We want to thank all fans and cosplayers for their quick feedback on our updated policy -- we have heard you and are adjusting to ensure our true concerns are addressed without adversely impacting your ability to cosplay at our event!

Our first priority at Baltimore Comic-Con will always be the safety and welfare of all our fans, guests, vendors, and the Baltimore community. Our amended policy is intended to address sharp-edged blades and realistic, functioning firearms. With that in mind, our AMENDED Weapons Policy follows.

The following list is not meant to be all-inclusive and the Baltimore Comic-Con reserves the right to prohibit additional items not listed in this policy. Prohibited items include:

  1.     Functional firearms of any kind (including air soft guns, BB guns, cap guns, paintball guns, and pellet guns)
  2.     Replica firearms (including reproductions, or toy guns that can be confused for actual firearms by law enforcement)
  3.     Sharp-edged (non-dull) bladed weapons (including axes, daggers, hatchets, knives and swords, sword canes, and switch blades)
  4.     Explosives of any type (including black powder, firecrackers, and fireworks)
  5.     Chemical weapons (including mace and pepper spray)

If you purchase a sharp-bladed weapon (not blunt or rounded) from a Vendor at the convention, please be careful and consider keeping it in its original packaging while you're on the show floor.

We completely appreciate the time and effort that so many of our fans and guests put into their costumes and convention attire and we expect to see many suits of armor, Thor's Uru hammers, Harley's mallets, Cap's shields, etc., and they have always been and will always be welcome at our show. Whether dressing for our annual costume contest, cosplay, or simply showing your fandom, we understand that weaponry is often part of the overall presentation. We sincerely hope everyone understands these extra measures that have been designed to preserve a safe and enjoyable environment for all, and we strongly encourage everyone to continue wearing the costumes on which they have spent so much time and effort.

Thank you in advance for working with us to ensure a safe and fun time is experienced by everyone at the Baltimore Comic-Con.

Al Jaffee to Be Honored at 2016 Baltimore Comic-Con

Al Jaffee to Receive Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award

BALTIMORE, MARYLAND - The Baltimore Comic-Con is September 2-4, 2016 at the Baltimore Convention Center, and will once again host the Harvey Awards on the evening of September 3, 2016. We are privileged to announce the addition of legendary MAD Magazine creator and industry luminary Al Jaffee for a special panel at the Baltimore Comic-Con and bestowal of the Harvey Kurtzman Hall of Fame Award. Mr. Jaffee will be joining us on Saturday, September 2nd. Tickets for the show and awards ceremony are now available.

Al Jaffee, MAD Magazine cartoonist and creator of the celebrated fold-in cover, is a Guinness World Record holder with the longest career of a comics artist (over 73 years!). His early career was spent as an artist for Timely Comics and Atlas Comics, and later again working for Stan Lee again as an editor on Timely's humor and teenage comics, including the Patsy Walker titles. His syndicated strip, Tall Tales, was collected and published by Abrams in 2008, winning the 2009 Harvey Award for Best Cartoonist and the Special Award for Humor in Comics. After time spent at MAD Magazine, he followed Harvey Kurtzman to Trump and Humbug, the former of which was recently collected and reprinted by Dark Horse. After both efforts folded, Jaffee returned to MAD Magazine, where he continues to provide fold-in covers to this day.

His work can be most recently be found in Tall Tales from Abrams (2008), the MAD Fold-In Collection 1964-2010 from Chronicle Books (2011) and Al Jaffee's Mad Life by Mary-Lou Weisman (and illustrations by Al Jaffee) from HarperCollins (2010).

Al has received numerous awards that celebrate his long career. He was inducted into the Society of Illustrators Hall of Fame in 2014, and the Will Eisner Hall of Fame in 2013. He has received the Reuben Award from the National Cartoonists Society in 2008 as well as their Humor Comic Book Award in 1979. He was also Best Cartoonist in 2001 for his work on MAD Magazine. He has received the Sergio Award from the Comic Art Professional Society and the Inkpot Award at the San Diego Comic-Con.

"This is such a huge honor," said Marc Nathan, promoter of the Baltimore Comic-Con. "Not only to have such a giant among giants of the comics field at the show, but to be able to celebrate his storied career and contributions to the industry at the Harvey Awards ceremony. We're exceptionally proud, and fans won't want to miss his panel Saturday at the show!"

Robinson and Kyle Baker, it received worldwide critical acclaim and won a number of prestigious literary awards, including two Harvey Awards (Best Original Graphic Novel and Best Biographical, Historical, or Journalistic Presentation) and the Will Eisner Comic Industry Award for Best Reality-Based Work. It is a Lambda Literary Finalist for Best LGBT Graphic Novel, an American Library Association Great Graphic Novel for Teens, and has been added to the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Library and Archives Permanent Collection. The Fifth Beatle is now being adapted into a multi-part TV event series that has secured unprecedented access to Beatles music. Vivek will be adapting his work for television and serving as executive producer.

Vivek has also just acquired the TV and film rights to Astronaut Academy, the middle-grade graphic novel series from bestselling author-illustrator Dave Roman (Agnes Quill), with plans to turn the books into both a live-action TV series and a film franchise, and talks are underway with writers, networks, and studios to adapt the coming-of-age adventure story set at a fantastical space station school.

Vivek's illustrated Young Adult novel Asha Ascending, with art by the award-winning Sara Richard (My Little Pony, Jem and The Holograms, Ghostbusters) is currently being serialized chapter-by-chapter free at AshaAscending.com. Taking place in a near-future where surgical implants access a virtual Internet, Asha Ascending follows teenage coder Asha Rai as she helps irresponsible party-boy Hal Haven save his mother's life, while they race against an evil faction to unlock the code to immortality.

"Hosting last year's Harvey Awards was the best night of my life in comics," said Tiwary, "I got to introduce beloved luminaries like Jules Feiffer and the late Darwyn Cooke, while honoring the creators of today's most inspiring work. But to quote Al Pacino -- 'I'm just getting warmed up!' See you in Baltimore!"

On Broadway, Tiwary's productions have won a combined 25 Tony Awards. They include such groundbreaking work as Green Day's American Idiot, The Addams Family, A Raisin In The Sun, and Mel Brooks' The Producers. Vivek is currently working with Alanis Morissette and Pulitzer and Tony Award-winner Tom Kitt to adapt Morissette's breakthrough album Jagged Little Pill for Broadway.

Vivek has served on the Board of Directors for Valiant Entertainment, a multi-platform company that boasts the third largest universe of comic book characters and has secured a 5-film deal with Sony Pictures.

Vivek held a number of major label music-industry positions working with artists ranging from Bruce Springsteen to Britney Spears.

In addition to hosting the awards ceremony, Vivek will be speaking on a panel and signing books throughout the weekend at the Baltimore Comic-Con.

The Harvey Awards are one of the comic book industry's oldest and most respected awards. The Harveys recognize outstanding achievements in over 20 categories. They are the only industry awards both nominated and selected by the full body of comic book professionals. Additionally, the Hero Initiative will present 2 awards to outstanding members of the comics community.

The Hero Initiative was established to aid comic creators with a financial safety net when in need of emergency medical aid, financial support for essentials of life, and an avenue back into paying work. In the years since its inception, the board has created an award to recognize those individuals in the industry that have dedicated their talent over the lifetime of their careers to the comic book community at-large, achieving the status of Hero. Previous recipients include Denis Kitichen, Herb Trimpe, Sal Buscema, John Romita, Joe Kubert, Nick Cardy, Neal Adams, and George Perez. Who will be this year's lifetime Hero?

The Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will also be presented at the Harvey Awards Banquet. Giordano, who passed away in early 2010, was part of Hero Initiative's Board of Directors. He was also a legendary artist, a guiding force at Charlton Comics and DC Comics for many years, a mentor to his colleagues, and a friend to all who knew him. His legacy epitomizes the caring and commitment Hero Initiative strives to achieve. In his honor, the Dick Giordano Humanitarian of the Year Award will recognize one person in comics each year who has demonstrated the generosity and integrity Dick brought to the charity, and to the comic book community at large.
