Chapter Three: “Raiders of the Lost Schlock”

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character,” known as “Elvira.”  Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name.  As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s.

Elvira also appeared in comic books, beginning in 1986 with the short-lived series from DC Comics, Elvira's House of Mystery, which ran for eleven issues and one special issue (1987).  Eclipse Comics and Claypool Comics began the long-running Elvira: Mistress of the Dark from 1993 to 2007.  In 2018, Elvira returned to comic books via Dynamite Entertainment in the four-issue comic book miniseries, Elvira Mistress of the Dark, that actually ran for 12 issues.

Vincent Price (1911–1993) was an American actor and a legendary movie star.  Price was and still is best known for his performances in horror films, although his career spanned other genres.  Price appeared in more than 100 films, but he also performed on television, the stage, and on radio.  Thus, he has two stars on the “Hollywood Walk of Fame,” one for motion pictures and one for television.

Elvira and Vincent Price team up for the first time in the comic book miniseries, Elvira Meets Vincent Price.  The series is written by David Avallone; drawn by Juan Samu; colored by Walter Pereyra; and lettered by Taylor Esposito with Elizabeth Sharland.  The series finds Elvira and Price searching for a long-lost cult movie, “Rise of the Ram,” because it contains an incantation that can save the world from destruction at the hands of the ancient Egyptian god, Amun-Ra.

As Elvira Meets Vincent Price #3 (“Raiders of the Lost Schlock”) opens, Elvira and Vincent travel to Cairo, Egypt in hopes of finding the one person who could still have a copy of “Rise of the Ram,” the film's screenwriter, Ahmed Alhazred.  Our ghoulish duo finds him at “The Pyramid Fields of Abu Sir,” conducting tours and doing archaeological work.  Elvira and Vincent get lucky, as Ahmed has even more good news for them about The Books of the End of All Things, a scroll that has suddenly become an important part of Elvira and Vincent's quest.

However, they are unaware that they are being stalked by the “Sons of the Desert.”  Even if they avoid that trouble, their main adversary is about to make her big appearance.

THE LOWDOWN:  Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department recently began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Elvira Meets Vincent Price #3, which is the third issue of the series that I have read and one of many Dynamite Elvira comic books that I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I have been a fan of writer David Avallone's Elvira comic books for a few years now.  Once again, an issue of Elvira Meets Vincent Price reminds me, if I need a reminder (which I don't), why I love these comic books so much.  In this third issue, Avallone gifts his readers a game of cat-and-mouse among the pyramids.  His script is filled with sparkling comedy, witty asides, and enough cultural references to make Quentin Tarantino jealous.  I should not forget the funny bit players and supporting characters like the “Sons of the Desert” who may be a riff on a kind of silent movie stock villain.

Talented Spanish artist, Juan Samu's graphical storytelling and art creates a comic book that recalls screwball comedies and Bob Hope and Bing Crosby with Dorothy Lamour.  Walter Pereya's painterly colors light up the story in living color.  The lettering, by Taylor Esposito with Elizabeth Sharland, creates a delightful pitter-patter of breezy comedy and endless charm.

I could read another 100 pages of Elvira Meets Vincent Price #3; I'm addicted.  Dear readers, don't deny yourself this cure for the pandemic-time blues.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Elvira and of Vincent Price and of David Avallone's Elvira comic books will want to read Elvira Meets Vincent Price.

Vampirella is a vampire and female superhero created by the late author and science fiction and horror expert, Forrest J Ackerman, and designed by comic book artist, Trina Robbins.  Vampirella first appeared in Vampirella #1 (Sept. 1969), the debut issue of a black and white horror comics magazine from Warren Publishing.  Writer-editor Archie Goodwin changed the character from a hostess of horror comics to a leading character in her own stories.

In 2010, Dynamite Entertainment obtained the character and has been publishing new Vampirella material since then.  One of Dynamite's titles is the Vampirella Holiday Special, an anthology, holiday-themed comic book.

Vampirella Holiday Special 2021 Volume 5 features three short stories.  The first story is “The Fright Before Christmas,” which is written and drawn by Will Robson and colored by Andrew Dalhouse.  The second story is “Vampire Bells,” which is written and drawn by Vincenzo Federici and colored by Matt Herms.  The final story is “Sleigh,” which is written and drawn by Vencenzo Carratu and colored by Kike J. Diaz.  All three stories are lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

THE LOWDOWN:  I will summarize and review each story one at a time:

“The Fright Before Christmas,” by Will Robson and Andrew Dalhouse:

Every year, there is the annual hunting trip known as the “Christmas Eve Gala of the Occult.”  Three different hunters who call themselves “The Spirits of Christmas” hunt a mythical, paranormal, or supernatural creature.  This year, the gala's grand prize is Vampirella, but the hunters are about to find out that Vampirella isn't just any old kind of hunting game.

“The Fright Before Christmas” is the longest story of the three, clocking in at 20 pages.  It is a truly great story with every page filled with Robson's beautiful, Arthur Adams-inspired art.  Andrew Dalhouse's colors make this tale shine like Christmas lights.

“Vampire Bells” by Vincenzo Federici and Matt Herms:

In Hong Kong for Christmas, Vampirella can't celebrate if she has to battle a kaiju.  “Vampire Bells” is a four-pager with nice art and coloring, and I have nothing else to say about it.

“Sleigh” by Vencenzo Carratu and Kike J. Diaz:

After a meal of reindeer, Vampirella happens upon a fight between Christmas figures of lore.  So what if the night before Christmas, it had to be Vampirella?

“Sleigh” is also a four-page story, but it delights me far more than “Vampire Bells.”  It is such a novel and clever spin on Christmas that I won't spoil it.  I will say, however, that it may be the most Christmas-inspired tale of the three.

So, instead of picking a favorite, I will say that Vampire Bells is my least favorite of the three – not that it is bad.  It simply does not capture my imagination anywhere near as much as “The Fright Before Christmas” and “Sleigh” do.  Vampirella Holiday Special 2021 is an excellent holiday comic book.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Vampirella comics will want to read Vampirella Holiday Special 2021.

Comics Review: "PURGATORI Volume 2 #2" is an Excellent Second Issue

Purgatori created by Brian Pulido and Steven Hughes

“Witches Get Stitches” Part 2

Purgatori is a horror comics character created by writer Brian Pulido and artist Steven Hughes and originally published by Chaos! Comics.  A crimson-skinned, winged vampire goddess, she first appeared in the comic book, Evil Ernie: Revenge #1 (cover dated: October 1994).  Chaos! Comics eventually went out of business, and in 2010, Purgatori became the intellectual property (IP) of Dynamite Entertainment.

Dynamite's first solo Purgatori comic book series is Purgatori Volume 2.  It is written by Ray Fawkes; drawn by Álvaro Sarraseca; colored by Salvatore Aiala; and lettered by Tom Napolitano.  Purgatori follows the title character as she deals with a plot against her, formulated by a coven of witches who want her immortality and power.

Purgatori Volume 2 #2 opens in a gloomy forest in Øvre Pasvik, Norway.  Purgatori was at a monastery in Hunan Province, China, where she is worshiped.  However, her confrontation with Sara, a member of a coven of witches based in London, has brought her to this Norwegian forest.

While fighting a pack of “Draugar,” Purgatori meets Asim Darwish, the last of the warriors of St. Luke, the monster-hunting society.  He could be an ally, but Purgatori is being such a bitch.  She may need him, however, as the coven makes its next move against her.

THE LOWDOWN:  Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department recently began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Purgatori Volume 2 #2, which is the second Purgatori comic book of any kind that I've read.

Writer Ray Fawkes offered the kind of intriguing first issue that will draw many readers back for more.  Now, he offers the kind of second issue that declares that the first was not a fluke.  He continues to tease just enough about the conspiracy against Purgatori and about the conspirators to make me want to find out more.  Fawkes depicts Purgatori as crazy, sexy, cool, and arrogant – the perfect comic book bad girl.  Meanwhile, Fawkes also drops in the intriguing Asim Darwish...

Artist Álvaro Sarraseca continues to deliver beautifully drawn art.  The clean drawing style and clear storytelling convey the many attention grabbing elements in Fawkes' script.  Salvatore Aiala's colors have an eye-candy quality that makes this comic book all sparkly, and, as always, letterer Tom Napolitano delivers the kind of work that gives comic books a sense of sound.

I didn't expect much of Purgatori; after all, I have always ignored the character.  But after the first two issues, I am in as a regular reader.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Chaos Comics Purgatori will want to visit Purgatori Volume 2.

Comics Review: The Army of Darkness 1979 #3

Army of Darkness is a 1992 comic horror film and the third film in the Evil Dead film franchise.  The film focuses on the series' lead character, Ash Williams (portrayed by actor Bruce Campbell), as he is trapped in the Middle Ages and battling an army of undead warriors.

In 1992, Dark Horse Comics released a three-issue adaptation of Army of Darkness, and in 2004, Dynamite Entertainment acquired the rights to produce comics based on the Army of Darkness film, featuring Ash as the main character.

The most recent Army of Darkness comic book in the Dynamite catalog is The Army of Darkness 1979.  It is written by Rodney Barnes; drawn by Tom Garcia; colored by Dinei Ribero; and lettered by Troy Peteri.  In the new series, Ash Williams finds himself in late 1970s New York City.  Not only is he fighting his usual adversaries, the Deadites and the Necronomicon, but he is also caught in a turf war between rival street gangs.

As The Army of Darkness 1979 Volume 1 #3 opens, Ash and “The Half Deads” street gang are getting the worst of it from rival street gang, “The Panthers.”  Even if the tide turns, “The Mrs. Bradys” are waiting to deliver their special brand of motherly love.

Not far away, the leader of “The Warlocks” is still in possession of the Necronomicon, and he sees this as a chance for world domination.  However, the rest of his gang just wants to use the dark magic for some creature comforts.  How will their leader deal with this dissension?  Meanwhile, the streets of New York City are in a panic and awash in meat puddles and bloody mush!

THE LOWDOWN:  Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department recently began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is The Army of Darkness 1979 Volume 1 #3, which is the third Dynamite Entertainment Army of Darkness comic book I have read.

This third issue of the series may be the funniest yet.  Writer Rodney Barnes uses a two-page section that depicts a mayoral press conference and local TV reporter to deliver trademark Army of Darkness comic horror dialogue, ghoulish wit, and mockery.  Meanwhile, Tom Garcia draws his strongest art yet, so Army of Darkness 1979 Volume 1 is steadily pumping up the volume.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Army of Darkness comic books and of the franchise, in general, will want to read The Army of Darkness 1979.
