“Who is the Black Panther?” Part One
The Black Panther, also known as T’Challa, is a Marvel Comics character and was the first black superhero to appear in mainstream American comics. Created by writer Stan Lee and artist Jack Kirby, the Black Panther first appeared in Fantastic Four #52 (cover dated: July 1966).
On occasion, I have come across some Black Panther comic books that I have liked, and Black Panther has appeared as a guest or co-star in other comic book series that I find memorable, such as in Fantastic Four #241, during John Byrne's incredible run as writer-artist during the early to mid-1980s.
Still, the Black Panther comic book that I have loved the most did not arrive until early 2005. That year, Marvel Comics launched a new Black Panther series under the “Marvel Knights” (MK) banner. It was written by Reginald Hudlin, a movie director and producer, who was best known, at the time, for directing House Party (1990) and Boomerang (1992). He would go on to earn a best picture Oscar nomination as one of the producers of Quentin Tarantino's Django Unchained (2012). This Black Panther comic book was drawn by John Romita, Jr. (pencils) and Klaus Janson (inks); colored by Dean White; and lettered by Chris Eliopoulos.
Black Panther #1 (“Who is the Black Panther?” Part One) opens in the Black Panther home land, the central African nation of Wakanda, during the 5th century A.D. The story also visits Wakanda during the 19th century. It seems that these are two moments in Wakandan history when the mysterious nation ably defended itself from outside raiders. In the early 21st century, however, outside forces seek to penetrate the defenses and veil of Wakanda, this time successfully.
Within the last year, Marvel Studios has announced that it is producing a Black Panther feature film; has cast an actor to play Black Panther/T'Challa (Chadwick Boseman); and has selected a director for the film (Ryan Coogler). So I decided to re-read 2005 Black Panther #1 again, which I had not read since it was first published. It would be a start to rereading as much of that series as I could before Black Panther makes his first feature film appearance in the upcoming film, Captain America: Civil War. Another reason for me to revisit this series is the anticipation of author, journalist, and political and cultural commentator, Ta-Nehisi Coates' upcoming work on the character.
I think what I like about Black Panther #1 is that it makes Wakanda and the legacy that is Black Panther so bad-ass. Of course, Reginald Hudlin delivers a stellar script, full of enthralling action and mystery. John Romita, Jr.'s pencils are some of his most stylish art, and Klaus Janson's stellar inking strengthens the compositions and storytelling. Dean White's colors make the story seem as if it is on fire, almost too hot to handle for the imagination. The Ohio Players said Fi-Ya!
However, it is the sense that the Black Panther mythos is as powerful as any other Marvel superhero mythos or world, and that makes this comic book so cool. Black Panther is not a token, and he is more than historical. His is a world within the larger world of the Marvel Universe with which others will have to reckon. This is the gift that Reginald Hudlin gave to Black Panther. Hudlin picked up on the strong work that Christopher Priest began in his 1998 Black Panther, which was the first step in making Black Panther a major character, for reals, and Hudlin kept it too-real for some readers slash haters.
Ta-Nehisi Coates, I hope you can make the Panther's claws sharper than ever.

New Commemorative Logo Kicks Off Festivities Leading to First Solo Film in 2017

BURBANK, CA — To mark the 75th anniversary of one of the world’s best-known Super Heroes, Warner Bros. Entertainment and DC Entertainment today unveiled plans for a year-long celebration of Wonder Woman. The character has transcended the pages of comics to become a powerful global symbol of justice, equality and peace.
Beginning with a new commemorative logo honoring the Amazon Princess’s legacy, highlights of the year will include the relaunch of her comic book series; new graphic novels; convention panels; and consumer products, including apparel, toys and other exclusive merchandise. These and further anniversary events will culminate in the release of the very first “Wonder Woman” feature film on June 2, 2017.
First seen in October 1941 in All-Star Comics #8 in a back-up story meant to test her appeal at a time when female superheroes were rare, Wonder Woman quickly broke out and headlined her own title by the next year. Subsequent generations came to know the star-spangled heroine with metal bracelets on her wrists and a magic lasso by her waist via her hit 1975-79 television series and roles in animated shows and movies, as well as her historic appearance on the cover Ms. Magazine #1 in 1972. This past March, Wonder Woman was seen for the first time in a live action motion picture with her introduction in the global blockbuster “Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice.”

Over the decades, Wonder Woman has run for president, organized a union, flown an invisible plane, lost and regained her powers, studied martial arts, battled Ares, the God of War, worked at a fast food chain, and had a romantic relationship with Superman. Her diverse history will be integrated and celebrated in a new comic book series launching this month as part of DC Universe: Rebirth that honors what fans love most about the character.
Written by fan favorite Greg Rucka and on sale June 22nd, 2016, Wonder Woman #1 will be the first print debut of the new Wonder Woman 75th commemorative logo. Other variations of the new logo created for various products merge the character’s name and traditional “W” symbols with the number 75, set alongside a striking blue silhouette of the iconic character in a warrior stance.

Created by William Moulton Marston, a psychologist who invented the lie-detecting polygraph machine, Wonder Woman was conceived as a new type of superhero who used wisdom and compassion, not just her fists, to triumph over evil. Daughter of the queen of the all-female Amazon tribe from Greek mythology, Wonder Woman was imbued by the gods with powers, including super-strength and a lasso that compels anyone it surrounds to tell the truth. Wearing a costume inspired by the flag of a downed American pilot, she travelled to “patriarch’s world” to fight for such values as peace and equality. She is the only female comic book character to have her own stories continuously published for the past three quarters of a century.

● At long last, June 2, 2017, will see the long-held hopes of millions of fans fulfilled as the first “Wonder Woman” movie is released in cinemas worldwide, starring Gal Gadot in the title role, Chris Pine as Captain Steve Trevor, Robin Wright as the Amazonian General Antiope and Connie Nielsen as Queen Hippolyta, directed by Patty Jenkins.

Original cast members will give new life to Helga, a complicated and cynical girl who puts up a mean front, but is full of extreme emotions; Phoebe, Helga’s confidante and loyal best friend; Harold, a former bully with a tough exterior and soft interior; Rhonda, a fashionista who comes from a preppy and prestigious family; and Olga, Helga’s beautiful, intelligent and friendly older sister; as well as the other colorful characters.

The greenlight for an original Hey Arnold! TV movie was announced earlier this year. The voice actors reprising their famed roles include: Francesca Marie Smith (The Prince of Egypt) as Helga; Anndi McAfee (Tom and Jerry: The Movie) as Phoebe; Justin Shenkarow (Recess) as Harold; Olivia Hack (Family Guy) as Rhonda; Nika Futterman (The Boxtrolls) as Olga; Dan Butler (Frasier) as Mr. Simmons; Dan Castellaneta (The Simpsons) as Grandpa; Tress MacNeille (The Simpsons) as Grandma; Antoinette Stella (Melrose Place, writer) as Stella; Carlos Alazraqui (Happy Feet) as Eduardo; Dom Irrera (Back at the Barnyard) as Ernie; Maurice LaMarche (Futurama) as Bob Pataki; Kath Soucie (Rugrats) as Miriam; Danielle Judovits (Toy Story) as Big Patty; Danny Cooksey (The Lorax) as Stoop Kid; Jim Belushi (According to Jim) as Coach Wittenberg; and Craig Bartlett as Miles.
Additionally, Lane Toran (original voice of Arnold) and Jamil Smith (original voice of Gerald) will supplement the returning cast by lending their voices to several other roles.

Original cast members will give new life to Helga, a complicated and cynical girl who puts up a mean front, but is full of extreme emotions; Phoebe, Helga’s confidante and loyal best friend; Harold, a former bully with a tough exterior and soft interior; Rhonda, a fashionista who comes from a preppy and prestigious family; and Olga, Helga’s beautiful, intelligent and friendly older sister; as well as the other colorful characters.
New voices in the Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie include: Mason Vale Cotton (Mad Men) as Arnold; Benjamin “L’il P-Nut” Flores, Jr. (Game Shakers) as Gerald; Gavin Lewis (Real Boy) as Eugene; Jet Jurgensmeyer (Bubble Guppies) as Stinky; Aiden Lewandowski (Comedy Bang! Bang!) as Sid; Laya Hayes (Santa Hunters) as Nadine; Nicolas Cantu (The Impossible Joy) as Curly; Wally Wingert (Sonic Boom) as Oskar; and Stephen Stanton (Star Wars Rebels) as Pigeon Man.
Rounding out the cast, Alfred Molina (Spider-Man 2) voices resident villain, Lasombra, an infamous river pirate operating from a secret compound in the jungles of San Lorenzo.
The greenlight for an original Hey Arnold! TV movie was announced earlier this year. Hey Arnold!: The Jungle Movie will feature a storyline that picks up from where the original series ended in 2004 and will resolve unanswered questions and plotlines--including Arnold finally getting answers about the whereabouts of his missing parents.
This August celebrates 25 years of original creator-driven animation for Nickelodeon, marking a significant milestone exemplifying decades of rich history and commitment to bringing fresh innovative content to kids and families around the world. Later in the year, Nickelodeon will open up a 190,000 square-foot, state-of-the-art complex to serve as the West Coast hub for the network, housing the ever-growing number of animated and live-action series, TV movies, and award shows and events seen globally.
