Comics Review: "SHEENA Queen of the Jungle #6"

SHEENA: QUEEN OF THE JUNGLE VOLUME 2 #6
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Steven E. de Souza
ART: Wil Rio; Jethro Morales
COLORS: Dinei Ribero
LETTERS: Taylor Esposito
EDITOR: Joseph Rybandt
COVER: Lucio Parrillo
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Rose Besch; Arthur Suydam; Joseph Michael Linsner; Lucio Parrillo; Jackie Goehner and Rick Narvaez (cosplay)
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (May 2022)

Rated Teen+

Sheena originally created by S.M. “Jerry” Iger and Will Eisner; reboot by Steven E. de Souza

“Cenozoic” Part One

Sheena, Queen of the Jungle is an American comic book character.  She first appeared in the British magazine, Wags #46 ( January 1938), and was created by legendary American comic book creators, Will Eisner and S. M. “Jerry” Iger.  Sheena made her first American appearance in Jumbo Comics #1 (Fiction House, cover dated: September 1938) where she was a mainstay until 1953.  Sheena was also the first female comic book character to star in her own series.  A “jungle girl heroine,” Sheen was an orphan, like Edgar Rice Burroughs' Tarzan, who had adventures featuring African natives, wild animals, and white hunters and villains.

Dynamite began publishing Sheena comics in 2017.  Dynamite's second series is Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, Volume 2.  It is written by Stephen E. de Souza; drawn by Jethro Morales and Wil Rio; colored by Dinei Ribero; and lettered by Taylor Esposito.  Writer de Souza begins a new series of challenges for Sheena in the story line, “Cenozoic.”

Sheena: Queen of the Jungle, Volume 2 #6 opens in Cardwell Tower in Val Verde City, Val Verde, South AmericaCardwell Industries is making plans to develop the “Zona Prohibda,” a nature preserve in Val Verde's interior, for shale oil and fracking.  Sheena believes that the only way to stop that is to find the site “The Lost City of Piatiti.”  The United Nations would turn the location of the lost city into a “World Heritage Site,” thus shutting down any industrial development.

With a band of human and animal allies, Sheena heads into the unexplored interior of the country.  Of course, they will find more than they expected.

THE LOWDOWN:  In July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department began providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Sheena: Queen of the Jungle Volume 2 #6, which is the sixth Dynamite Sheena comic book that I have read.

Sheena: Queen of the Jungle Volume 2 is one of my favorite Dynamite titles.  Writer Steven E. de Souza, known for his work in Hollywood as a writer, producer, and director of film and television, offers some nice intrigue, and I must admit that I find his version of Sheena a little more interesting.  She has layers to her personality and is sly, witty and resourceful … like Indiana Jones.  Issue #6 really only hints at what is to come, so I expect the seventh issue to be more explosive.

The art and graphics team returns with Wil Rio joining Jethro Morales on art, so readers will get more of the same beautiful art that has defined Sheena: Queen of the Jungle Volume 2.  Colorist Dinei Ribero and letterer Taylor Esposito also continue doing stellar work.  This continues to be an excellent adventure comic book in which every chapter has both a strong narrative and an intriguing cliffhanger.  Let's keep reading, shall we, dear readers?

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Sheena will want to try Sheena Queen of the Jungle Volume 2.

[This comic book includes “Dynamite Dispatch” May 2022, which features an interview with writer Jordan Clark.]

Comics Review: "KING SPAWN #10" - Better Red Than Dead

KING SPAWN #10
IMAGE COMICS/Todd McFarlane Producions

STORY: Sean Lewis with Todd McFarlane
ART: Javi Fernandez
LETTERS: Andworld Design
EDITOR-in-CHIEF: Thomas Healy
COVER:  Javi Fernandez
28pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (May 2022)

Rated: “T/ Teen”

Spawn created by Todd McFarlane

Spawn is a superhero/antihero character that stars in the long-running comic book series, Spawn.  Created by writer-artist Todd McFarlane, Spawn first appeared in Spawn #1 (cover dated: May 1992).

Spawn was Albert Francis “Al” Simmons.  A career military man who becomes a highly capable assassin and dies a violent death.  He makes a deal with the devil, Malebolgia, in order to return to the living realm to see his wife one last time.  However, Al returns with almost no memories accept that his name is Al Simmons, and he learns that he is now a “Hellspawn” in service of Malebolgia.  Rebelling, Al Simmons, now “Spawn,” finds a new purpose in stopping evil.

King Spawn is one of three recently launched comic book series that join the original series to form the “Spawn Universe.”  This series is written by Sean Lewis with Todd McFarlane; drawn by Javi Fernandez; colored by FCO Plascencia; lettered by Andworld Design.  King Spawn finds Spawn battling the members of a dark conspiracy that wants to force him to accept his crown.

King Spawn #10 opens on the streets of New York City.  While Spawn is in Greenworld, sparring with Gaia and receiving grave prophecies and warnings, his best friend, Terry Fitzgerald, is about to enter the Exodus Foundation building.  Exodus is resource central for all the major players in the “King Spawn” movement:  Psalms 137, the Court of Priests, and Black Azrael.

With the shadow of Spawn at his side (or behind him, as it may be), Terry goes deeper and higher into the foundation's building than any ordinary human could.  But Terry ain't any ordinary human, and the Godthrone ain't any ordinary throne … as he is about to learn.

THE LOWDOWN:  King Spawn continues to be the best Spawn spin-off comic book to date.  This hybrid of dark fantasy, the supernatural, and superheroes never disappoints.  It either whets my appetite for destruction or blows my mind.

King Spawn #10 may be the best issue yet, and I want to call it my favorite issue (although I know other favorites are just around the corner).  The art is presented in the three-color format: black, white, and red.  I've always thought that the best artists really show off their chops in black and white, and in King Spawn #10, Javi Fernandez certainly reveals his command of mood, atmosphere, and settings  His art is gorgeous – like a mixture of Eduardo Risso's best work from 100 Bullets (DC Comics) and Moonshine (Image Comics).  King Spawn #10 is crime comics cool meets monster comics kick-ass.

King Spawn #10 is one of those issues in which writer Sean Lewis sprinkles bits from all his craziness so far, but done in a way that thrills regular readers and acts as a “roach motel” for new readers.  And it is indeed a thrill to read.  Get King Spawn.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Spawn will want to read King Spawn.

Comics Review: A TOWN CALLED TERROR #2

A TOWN CALLED TERROR #2

Rated “M/Mature”

A Town Called Terror” created by Steve Niles and Szymon Kudranski

Part 2: “The Return”

A Town Called Terror is a new comic book series from writer Steve Niles and artist-colorist Szymon Kudranski.  The series blends the genres of crime and horror fiction and is set largely in a town of monsters and freaks.  Letterer Scott O. Brown completes the creative team.

In a town called “Terror” (population 1300), a great man has just come back from the dead – apparently not for the first time.  Henry West has also just been kidnapped to Terror, his hometown.  Meanwhile, his wife, Julie, knows very little of the circumstances surrounding her husband's disappearance, only that her husband has been kidnapped.

A Town Called Terror #2 (“The Return”) opens in a town called Terror.  No, it's not a nightmare, Henry.  You are back into Terror and are locked in.  In a tense meeting with his father, Henry learns that dear old dad has forced his return to Terror because his wife (and Henry's mother) has mysteriously disappeared, and Henry apparently has the skills to find her.

But being home has not only reacquainted Henry with painful memories, but also with old rivalries.

THE LOWDOWN:  Steve Niles may be the most famous writer of modern American horror comic books.  Artist Szymon Kudranski has been plying his trade on the dark side of comics with stints on Marvel Comics' The Punisher and on Spawn and recently on Nita Hawes NIGHTMARE Blog (also from Image Comics).  They have come together for a comic book that could be quite special.

Niles is playing out the story in monthly serial form; for instance, we really don't know what happened to his mother other than the vague “beyond the grave” offering.  While Niles werewolf-cock-teases us, Kudranski is slaying readers with some of the most beautifully haunting and hauntingly beautiful horror comic book art being published today.  [Honestly, it seems that the best artists of horror comic books are currently mostly at Image Comics.]

Here, Kudranski's art and storytelling is truly Film-Noir, not just light noir-ish pretend.  It is as if someone, Kudranski, in this case, took the sublime shadowy worlds of Bernie Wrightson and decided to evolve what the late artist did rather than just be “inspired” by it or “homage” it to death.

The world that Kudranski creates in A Town Called Terror is ... terrifying, but also too beautiful to resist.  If there is ever a film or TV adaptation of this comic book, no cinematographer or director of photography will be able to recreate the visual, graphical, and illustrative beauty that is the art of A Town Called Terror.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Steve Niles, Szymon Kudranski, and horror comic books will to try A Town Called Terror.

Downton Abbey is a 2019 historical drama film directed by Michael Engler.  It is based on the British television series, “Downton Abbey” (ITV, 2010-15), which was created by Julian Fellowes, who also wrote the screenplay for this film.  Downton Abbey the movie continues the story of the Crawley family as they prepare the family estate for a royal visit.

Downton Abbey opens in 1927, eighteen months after the end of the television series.  Robert Crawley, Lord Grantham and 7th Earl of Grantham (Hugh Bonneville), receives word that King George V (Simon Jones) and Queen Mary (Geraldine James) intend to visit Downton Abbey during their royal Yorkshire tour.  Downton is the Crawley family's large estate in the English countryside of Yorkshire (County of York).  Both the family and the staff of Downton Abbey are excited by the news.

Lord Grantham puts his daughter, Lady Mary Talbot (Michelle Dockery), in charge of the preparations for the visit.  Lady Mary feels that the current head butler, Thomas Barrow (Robert James-Collier), is ill-equipped to manage such an important event.  Thus, she recruits retired head butler, Charles Carson (Jim Carter), to briefly return from retirement in order to assist her, much to Barrow's chagrin.  However, once members of the royal staff begin to arrive at Downton in advance of the King and Queen themselves, they act rudely towards the Downton staff and make it clear that they will supplant them for the duration of the royal visit.

Meanwhile, a feud brews between Lord Grantham's mother, Violet Crawley, Dowager Countess of Grantham (Maggie Smith), and Maud, Lady Bagshaw (Imelda Staunton), the Queen's lady-in-waiting and a relative of the Crawleys.  Lord Grantham is Maud's first cousin once removed, so he should inherit Maud's estate.  However, Maud has plans regarding her maid, Lucy Smith (Tuppence Middleton), who has a mysteriously close relationship with Maud.  Meanwhile, Tom Branson (Alan Leech) meets Lucy, and they strike up a friendship.

These are just a few of the dramas and melodramas, both large and small, that brew as a royal visit threatens to upend the lives of those upstairs and downstairs at Downton Abbey.

The original television series, Downton Abbey, began airing on the British television network, ITV, in 2010 and ended in 2015, after six seasons and 52 episodes.  It aired on the American broadcast network, PBS, as part of its “Masterpiece” series from 2011-20, before moving onto streaming services, Peacock and Netflix.  The final episode of “Downton Abbey” was set on New Year's Eve, 1925, and the movie is set 18 months after the TV series finale, according to an interview the writer and director gave to the Hollywood film site, The Wrap.  The King George V depicted in this film reigned from 1910 to 1936.  He was also the father of the next king, Edward VIII, who abdicated a few months into his reign.  Thus, George V's second son, Prince Albert, Duke of York, became King George VI, who was also the father of the current Queen Elizabeth II.

When I first heard of “Downton Abbey,” I mostly ignored it, although I watched a few minutes here and there.  One Sunday afternoon, however, while channel surfing, I came across the show and recognized an actor (maybe American actress Elizabeth McGovern).  I decided to see what she was doing on the show and within a few minutes I was hooked.  It wasn't until two hours later I realized that I still had chores to do, but it was hard to pull myself away from the TV.  I found myself in the thrall of “Downton Abbey's” hypnotic powers.

I also found Downton Abbey the movie hypnotic.  It offers many of the same ingredients of the television series that made it so popular and have since made it an enduring favorite.  The film both expands and extracts those elements, as needed, for the main plot – the royal visit.  Actually, creator Julian Fellowes' screenplay allows all the regular members of the TV cast to do what is expected of their respective characters, while allowing them to shine in the small moments of this film.  New characters, such as Imelda Staunton as Cousin Maud and Tuppence Middleton as her maid, Lucy, who shine in their respective supporting roles.

Some of the subplots here could work as story lines for an entire season of the television series.  That includes an assassination subplot and a first gay romantic experience, the former seeming forced and unauthentic and the latter being something beautiful, but woefully underdeveloped.

If you liked the television series, you will like this, to some degree, because it is more Downton Abbey.  Or you will be disappointed, to some degree, because it does not meet your expectations of what more Downton Abbey should be.  Honestly, I loved it, and I wanted more.  Downton Abbey the movie made me happy, and I look forward to the soon to be released sequel, Downton Abbey: A New Era.
