USC Libraries Name Finalists for 36th-Annual Scripter Awards

LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--The USC Libraries named the finalists for the 36th-annual USC Libraries Scripter Award, which honors the writers of the year’s most accomplished film and episodic series adaptations, as well as the writers of the works on which they are based.

The finalist writers for film adaptation are, in alphabetical order by film title:

• Cord Jefferson for “American Fiction” based on the novel “Erasure” by Percival Everett

• Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese for “Killers of the Flower Moon” based on the nonfiction book “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann

• Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer” based on the nonfiction book “American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer” by Kai Bird and Martin J. Sherwin

• Ava DuVernay for “Origin” based on the nonfiction book “Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents” by Isabel Wilkerson

• Screenwriter Tony McNamara and novelist Alasdair Gray for “Poor Things”

The finalist writers for episodic series are, in alphabetical order by series title:

• Peter Morgan, for the episode “Sleep, Dearie Sleep,” from “The Crown,” based on his stage play "The Audience"

• Scott Neustadter for the episode “Fire,” from “Daisy Jones and the Six,” based on the novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid

• Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann for the episode “Long, Long Time” from “The Last of Us,” based on the video game by Neil Druckmann and Naughty Dog

• Will Smith for the episode “Negotiating with Tigers,” from “Slow Horses,” based on the novel “Real Tigers” by Mick Herron

• Max Borenstein, Rodney Barnes and Jim Hecht for the episode “The New World,” from “Winning Time: The Rise of the Lakers Dynasty” based on the nonfiction work “Showtime: Magic, Kareem, Riley, and the Los Angeles Lakers Dynasty of the 1980s” by Jeff Pearlman

The 2024 Scripter selection committee selected the finalists from a field of 80 film and 56 episodic series adaptations. Howard Rodman, USC professor and Vice President/Secretary of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, chairs the 2024 committee.

The USC Libraries will announce the winning authors and screenwriters at a black-tie ceremony on Saturday, Mar. 2, 2024, in the historic Edward L. Doheny Jr. Memorial Library at the University of Southern California.

SCANDAL - From CNBC:  A New Mexico grand jury has indicted actor Alec Baldwin.  He is facing two separate types of "involuntary manslaughter" charges in relation to a fatal shooting on the New Mexico set of the Western film, "Rust." The charges are "Involuntary Manslaughter (Negligent Use of a Firearm)" and "Involuntary Manslaughter (Without Due Caution or Circumspection)."  On Oct. 21, 2021, Baldwin was handling a prop gun that discharged, killing Rust's cinematographer, Halyna Hutchins, and injuring the film's director Joel Souza. Rust has since been completed and is awaiting distribution.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Director Chad Stahelski will oversee the "Highlander" and "John Wick" franchises for Lionsgate.  Stahelski, who is set to direct the reboot of the 1986 fantasy film, "Highlander," has directed all four of the John Wick films, including the most recent, John Wick: Chapter 4.

MOVIES - From THR:  Oscar-nominated actor, Paul Mescal ("Aftersun"), does not want the upcoming "Gladiator 2" to make him more famous.

EMMYS - From Deadline:  The winners at the 2023 / 75th Primetime Emmy Awards were announced Monday night, January 15th, 2024.  HBO's "Succession," Hulu's "The Bear," and Netflix's "Beef" dominated the evening.

From Deadline:  Four members of the cast of the former Fox sitcom, "Martin," reunited at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards ceremony.  Martin Lawrence, Tisha Campbell, Carl Anthony Payne II, and Tichina Arnold reunited to present the "Lead Actor in a Comedy Series," which was won by Jeremy Allen White for "The Bear" (Hulu).

From USAToday:  At the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards, actress Niecy Nash won "Best Supporting Actress in a Limited Series" for her role as "Glenda Cleveland" in the Netflix series, "Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story."  Her Emmys speech paid tribute to "every Black and brown woman who has gone unheard," and she referenced Glenda and real-life victims of police violence, Sandra Bland and Breonna Taylor. 

From Variety:  With his recent Emmy win at the 75th Primetime Emmy Awards for his Disney+ special, "Elton John Live: Farewell from Dodger Stadium," Elton John becomes the 24th person to join the "EGOT Club."  To join the club, one must win an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar, and a Tony Award.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The site examines why a number of broadcast network series are ending with their seventh season, including CBS' "Young Sheldon" and "S.W.A.T." and ABC's "The Good Doctor."

DISNEY - From Variety:  The Walt Disney Company and the National Football League (NFL) are in some kind of "earnest talks."  It could lead to the NFL buying a stake in Disney-owned ESPN and put the league's "NFL Media" unit under Disney's control.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 1/12 to 1/14/2024 weekend box office is Paramount Pictures' "Mean Girls" with an estimated take of 28 million dollars.

DISNEY - From TechCrunch:  Pixar will see a round of layoffs in 2024.  The number of people let go could be as high as 20%, seeing its team of 1300 employees fall to below 1000.

MOVIES - From THR:  Producers StudioCanal and Monumental Pictures have dropped the first international teaser trailer for the hotly anticipated "Back to Black," the upcoming music biopic on the late Grammy Award-winning singer-songwriter and recording artist, Amy Winehouse.  Up-and-coming British actress Marisa Abela plays Amy Winehouse.  "Back to Black" will debut in the UK and Ireland on April 12th. Focus Features will release the film in the U.S. on May 10th.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American actress, Joyce Randolph, has died at the age of 99, Saturday, January 13, 2024.  She was best known for portray the character, "Trixie Norton," wife of the late actor Art Carney's "Ed Norton," on "The Jackie Gleason Show (1952-57, CBS) and on the classic American television sitcom, "The Honeymooners" (1955-56, CBS)

From Deadline:  Film and television actress, Lynne Marta, has died at the age of 78, Thursday, January 11, 2024. Marta appeared in such films as the Clint Eastwood/Robert Duvall Western, "Joe Kid" (1972), the music driven teen drama, "Footloose" (1984).  However, Marta was a prolific TV actress. She appeared on 18 episodes of "Love, American Style" and was a guest star on numerous TV series over a four decade career, including "Barnaby Jones," "Charlie's Angels," "Designing Women," and "ER."

From THR:  Key award season dates leading up to the 2024 / 96th Academy Awards, which are Sunday, March 10th, 2024.

From Variety:  The nominations for the 2024 / 77th EE BAFTA Film Awards have been announced.  "Oppenheimer" leads with 13 nominations, and "Poor Things" follows with 11 nominations.  The winners will be announced Feb. 18th.

From Variety:  The Producers Guild of America has announced the nominees for the 2024 / 35th annual Producers Guild Awards.  For the first time in the history of the awards, two international films, "Anatomy of a Fall" and "The Zone of Interest," have made been nominated in the PGA's top category, "Darryl F. Zanuck Award for Outstanding Producer of Theatrical Motion Pictures." The winners will be announced Feb. 25th.

From Variety:   The nominees for the 2024 / 51st Annie Awards have been announced.  Netflix's "Nimona" leads the features categories with nine nominations.  The winners will be announced Sat., Feb. 17th.

From Deadline:  The Screen Actors Guild nominations for the 2024 / 30th annual SAG Awards have announced. "Barbie" and "Oppenheimer" leads the film side of things with four nominations apiece.  The winners will be announced Saturday, Feb. 24th.

From Variety:  The Directors Guild of America has announced the nominations for the 2024 / 76th DGA Awards.  In the top category, "Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Theatrical Feature Film of 2023," the nominees are Greta Gerwig for "Barbie," Christopher Nolan for “Oppenheimer,” Martin Scorsese for “Killers of the Flower Moon,” Yorgos Lanthimos for “Poor Things,” and Alexander Payne for “The Holdovers.”  The winners will be announced Feb. 10th.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Actor Gerard Butler provided the voice of "Stoick," the father of the hero, "Hiccup," in the DreamWorks Animation film, How to Train Your Dragon (2010). Butler will also play Stoick in the Universal Pictures' live-action version of the film, which is due in theaters June 13, 2025.

TELEVISION - From CBR:  Emmy-winning actor John Larroquette reunited with his former co-star, Marsha Warfield, on NBC's "Night Court" revival. Larroquette and Warfield became castmates on the original "Night Court" when Warfield joined the series in 1986 (Season 4). From Variety:   American-British film and television actor, singer-songwriter, and recording artist, David Soul, has died at the age of 80, Thursday, January 4, 2024.  Soul was best known for starring as "Detective Kenneth "Hutch" Hutchinson" on the former ABC police drama, "Starsky & Hutch" (1975-79).  Soul also starred in CBS' hit 1979 miniseries adaptation of Stephen King's novel "Salem's Lot."  Soul's film breakthrough was a role in the 1973 "Dirty Harry" film, "Magnum Force."  As a singer-songwriter and recording artist, Soul released five studio albums.  His hit single, "Don't Give Up on Us," recording in 1976, was a #1 hit on the "Billboard Hot 100."  It hit #1 on the charts in four other countries, including the U.K. where it sold 1.16 million copies.

From Deadline:  Author, playwright, and screenwriter, Herman Raucher, has died at the age of 95, Wednesday, December 28, 2023.  Raucher is best known for writing the autobiographical screenplay, Summer of '42 (1971), which went onto become one of the biggest box office hits of the 1970s.  He also wrote the film's novelization which became a national bestselling novel.  He also wrote the screenplays and novels for the films, "Watermelon Man" (1970) and "Ode to Billy Joe" (1976).  Raucher received a "Best Original Screenplay" Oscar nomination for his work on "Summer of '42."

From THR:  The British stage, film, and television actor, Tom Wilkinson, has died at the age of 75, Saturday, December 30, 2023.  Wilkinson was nominated twice for an Academy Awards, "Best Actor" ("In the Bedroom") and Best Supporting Actor" ("Michael Clayton"). He won a British Academy Award for "Best Supporting Actor" ("The Full Monty") and nominated three other times.  He won an Primetime Emmy Award for his role in the HBO TV miniseries, "John Adams" (2008) and was nominated three other times.  He was an acclaimed character actor in such films as "Sense and Sensibility" (1995), "Shakespeare in Love" (1998), "Batman Begins" (2005), and "Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol" (2011), to name a few.

From Deadline:  The comedian, actor, musician, songwriter and composer, Tom Smothers, has died at the age of 86, Tuesday, December 26, 2023.  Tom was best known for teaming up with his younger brother, Dick Smothers, to form the musical comedy duo, "the Smothers Brothers."  The brothers are best known for their controversial comedy and variety series, "The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour" (1967-69), which CBS abruptly cancelled in April 1969.  Tom received two Primetime Emmy nominations, shared with other writers, including his brother, Dick.  In 2008, Tom received an honorary Emmy Awards.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Michael Jai White (Black Dynamite) has wrapped production on "Trouble Man!," the action-comedy that he directed and stars in for Samuel Goldwyn Films.  The movie, which also stars Orlando Jones, Mike Epps, and Method Man, to name a few, will be released in 2024.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  The finale episode of the CBS/NBC's "Magnum P.I." reboot starring Jay Hernandez will air Jan. 3rd, 2024 with the final two episodes (19 and 20 of Season 5) airing as a two-hour event from 9 to 11 EST.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Warner Bros. has won an auction for "Calamity Hustle," an action-comedy from writer-directors Adam & Aaron Nee. The film is currently set to star Ryan Reynolds and Channing Tatum.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  The site has the screenplay for "Asteroid City" by Wes Anderson and Roman Coppola available for reading.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  Dwayne Johnson will play Mark Kerr, the legendary MMA fighter from the no-holds barred era of UFC, in A24‘s "The Smashing Machine." The film will be directed by Benny Safdie of Uncut Gems fame.

AMAZON - From Deadline:  Amazon MGM Studios has won the "film pitch packet" for "Best of Enemies," a spy thriller set to star Bradley Cooper and Christian Bale.

MOVIES - From Deadine:  Actress Naomi Scott, who first gained fame as "Princess Jasmine" in Disney's live-action Aladdin (2019), will star in Paramount sequel to its 2022 horror hit, Smile.  The sequel is set to hit theaters Oct. 18th, 2024.

STREAMING - From Variety:  From 1993 to 2004 Tony Award-winning actor David Hyde Pierce played "Dr. Niles Crane" on the former NBC sitcom, "Frasier."  He received 11 Primetime Emmy Award nominations for the role and won four of them. The series was recently rebooted for Paramount+ with series star, Kelsey Grammer, returning, but Pierce says that he did not return because he never really wanted to go back.

POLITICS - From Deadline:  "Biden Victory Fund" campaign co-chair, Jeffrey Katzenberg (co-founder of DreamWorks), says that the fund raised a record 15 million dollars during President Joe Biden and First Lady Dr. Jill Biden's weekend visit to Los Angeles.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 12/8 to 12/10/2023 weekend box office is GKIDS' "The Boy and the Heron" with an estimated take of 12.8 million dollars.

From Deadline:  "The Boy and the Heron" is now the first original anime production to finish at the top of the domestic (North American) box office.

AMAZON - From THR:  David Alan Grier says playing a black Santa Claus in the Prime Originals holiday movie, Candy Cane Lane, reminded him of Marvel's Black Panther.

From Deadline:  Prime Video has released the first trailer for its upcoming series, "Mr. and Mrs. Smith," based on the the 2005 Jolie-Pitt film, Mr. and Mrs. Smith.  Premiere date is Feb. 2nd, 2024.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  Journalist, historian, and documentary filmmaker, Cari Beauchamp, has died at the age of 74, Thursday, December 14, 2023.  Her 1998 biography, "Without Lying Down: Frances Marion and The Powerful Women of Early Hollywood," became a documentary she wrote and co-produced.  It premiered on Turner Classic Movies (TCM).  Beauchamp frequently appeared on TCM programming and at the annual TCM Classic Film Festival.

From Variety:   Film and television actor, Andre Braugher, has died at the age of 61, Monday, December 11, 2023.  Braugher was best known for his TV work.  He was "Detective Frank Pembleton" on NBC's former cop drama, "Homicide: Life on the Streets" and "Captain Raymond Hoult" on the former Fox/NBC sitcom, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine."  Braugher was nominated for 11 Primetime Emmy Awards and won twice, once for his work on "Homicide."
