Amazon to Release Steven Soderbergh’s New Film Logan Lucky on Prime Video During Its Exclusive US Streaming Window; Signs First-Look Deal with Fingerprint Releasing

Soderbergh returns from a self-imposed four-year retirement to direct the heist comedy starring Channing Tatum (Magic Mike), Daniel Craig (Skyfall), Adam Driver (Amazon Original Paterson), Seth MacFarlane (Ted), Hilary Swank (Million Dollar Baby), Riley Keough (Mad Max: Fury Road), Katherine Waterston (Alien: Covenant), Katie Holmes (Batman Begins) and Sebastian Stan (Captain America: Winter Soldier)
SEATTLE--(BUSINESS WIRE)--(NASDAQ:AMZN) Amazon today announced a deal to bring Steven Soderbergh’s newest film to Prime Video customers during its exclusive first-run US streaming window. Logan Lucky will hit theaters on August 18, 2017 and is expected to be released on Prime Video during the first quarter of 2018. Additionally, Amazon has signed an exclusive two-year first-look deal with Fingerprint Releasing on its theatrical film projects. Fingerprint is the new US film distributor formed by Soderbergh and piloted by Dan Fellman, former long-time President of Domestic Distribution for Warner Bros., with Amazon providing strategic P&A financing to augment the marketing of Fingerprint’s theatrical releases.

Says Soderbergh, the Oscar- and Emmy-winning director known for box office and critical successes such as Ocean’s Eleven, Erin Brockovich and Magic Mike, “The deal with Amazon is the final, crucial piece of the puzzle. The scale of this endeavor required a fearless, flexible co-conspirator, and Amazon has shown they have the appetite and vision to help us navigate these semi-unchartered waters. I’m both relieved and excited, which is one of my favorite states of being.”

Logan Lucky was written by Rebecca Blunt, produced by Gregory Jacobs, Mark Johnson, Reid Carolin and Channing Tatum, and executive produced by Michael Polaire, Dan Fellman, and NASCAR’s Zane Stoddard. Trying to reverse the infamous Logan Family Curse, brothers Jimmy Logan (Channing Tatum) and Clyde Logan (Adam Driver), along with sister Mellie Logan (Riley Keough) hook up with accomplice Joe Bang (Daniel Craig) to execute an impossibly elaborate robbery during the Coca-Cola 600, the biggest NASCAR race of the year. Review: "Da Sweet Blood of Jesus" is Strange and Beautiful

Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a 2014 African-American vampire drama and romance from director Spike Lee. Lee financed the film using the crowdfunding platform, Kickstarter. A number of fellow filmmakers and celebrities gave money to Lee's crowdfunding campaign, and each of their contributions was large enough ($10,000, I think) to earn a film credit as an “associate producer.” Some these associate producers include Oscar-winning director, Steven Soderbergh; owner of the NBA's Dallas Mavericks, Mark Cuban; NBA star, Joakim Noah; and CNN's Soledad O'Brien, among others. The film was released to select theaters and VOD (video-on-demand) by Gravitas Ventures.
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is an unofficial remake and homage to Bill Gunn's 1973 film, Ganja and Hess. Lee's film focuses on a wealthy anthropologist who becomes a vampire after being stabbed to death with an ancient African dagger.
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus introduces Dr. Hess Greene (Stephen Tyrone Williams), a wealthy, young African-American anthropologist. A collector of African art and artifacts, Hess has recently acquired a mysterious dagger originating in the ancient Ashanti Empire. Hess shares his find with Lafayette Hightower (Elvis Nolasco), a colleague from the Museum of the Republic of Brooklyn.
After a brutal confrontation, Hess discovers that his body is invulnerable to physical harm, and that he also has an insatiable need for blood. However, the manner in which he must satisfy his thirst is complicated and messy. When Hightower's estranged wife, Ganja (Zaraah Abrahams), comes looking for her husband, Hess believes that he has found someone with whom to share his new life.
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is a strange, melancholy film with wild shifts in mood. One might even call it bipolar. Even when one considers the oddities that are sprinkled throughout Spike Lee's filmography (Bamboozled and She Hate Me – to name a few), Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is the oddest. Still, I found this movie quite watchable, in a weird way; it was as if I could not stop following this film's nonsensical narrative. I think watching Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is like being ensnared by the alluring gaze of a vampire.
Lee sometimes has a problem unifying the messages and themes he presents in his films in a way that forms a coherent whole. Lee has described this film as being about humans that are addicted to love and as being a new kind of love story. Da Sweet Blood of Jesus offers themes of addiction, of HIV/AIDS, and of violence against women. At one point in the film, Hess tells Ganja that people can be addicted to anything. However, Hess' vampirism seems like a metaphor for addiction to crack, and his violence acts of women spread his affliction as if were spreading HIV/AIDS.
On the other hand, maybe Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is mostly Lee's tribute to the late Bill Gunn and his film, Ganja and Hess. I have not seen that movie (and don't plan to), but Lee reportedly reproduces certain sections of the 1973 film shot-for-shot in Da Sweet Blood of Jesus. If this is true, it would be fitting. The misunderstood Spike Lee toasting another, perhaps misunderstood filmmaker.
Whatever the case, this unconventional, stubborn, obtuse movie impressed me. I am always looking for a fresh take on vampires, and this detached, but gruesome, not-quite-a-fantasy film is bloody refreshing. Also, fans of Lee's film, Red Hook Summer, will find that it is connected to Da Sweet Blood of Jesus via the Lil’ Peace of Heaven Church.
Da Sweet Blood of Jesus has a lovely piano score by Bruce Hornsby and an invigorating and imaginative soundtrack featuring songs mostly performed by recording artists who are unsigned to major record labels or by music corporations. One can enjoy this film's opening credit sequence in which dancer, Charles “Lil Buck” Riley, dances to the opening strains of Hornsby's lovely score. The use of music in Da Sweet Blood of Jesus is indeed sweet.

Review: "Citizenfour" Records the Revolution

Citizenfour (stylized as CITIZENFOUR) is a 2014 documentary film from director Laura Poitras. The film focuses on Edward Snowden, who provided the information that revealed the illegal wiretapping of American citizens' communications by American intelligence agencies. Citizenfour won the Oscar for “Best Documentary Feature” at the 87th Academy Awards (February 22, 2015). Oscar-winning director, Steven Soderbergh, is one of this film's executive producers.
Citizenfour's narrative begins in January 2013 when documentarian Laura Poitras receives an encrypted email from an unknown person who calls himself “Citizenfour.” He offers her inside information about the illegal wiretapping practices of the United States National Security Agency (NSA) and other intelligence agencies. The NSA was recording and observing the phone calls of American citizens beyond the scope of what the U.S. Congress had authorized.
In June 2013, accompanied by investigative journalist Glenn Greenwald and The Guardian intelligence reporter, Ewen MacAskill, Poitras travels to Hong Kong for the first meeting with Citizenfour, who identifies himself as Edward Snowden. Edward Joseph Snowden works for the CIA via his employer, Booz Allen Hamilton, a job that gives him access to highly sensitive and classified information about the wiretapping practices of the NSA, both in the U.S. and abroad.
On Monday, June 3, 2013, Poitras uses her camera to begin filming what would be a four-day interview, in which Snowden reveals to Greenwald and MacAskill the details of domestic surveillance of American citizens. When Snowden's information becomes “breaking news” around the world, however, none of the participants in this interview feel safe in The Mira, the Hong Kong hotel where Snowden is staying.
Although it chronicles a momentous time in American history, Citizenfour is strangely quiet, even intimate. This movie is not an all-encompassing survey of domestic surveillance and spying; it is the story of the first quiet days and then, frantic weeks when Snowden whispered the sour nothings that fully revealed the deceitful face of the American government. It is as if Snowden, Poitras, and Greenwald said to us that we, the people of the United States, should finally, finally and really pay attention to that man behind the curtain.
Even if one is familiar with Edward Snowden and the furious sound of his whistle-blowing, Citizenfour still feels shocking. Perhaps, this is because Poitras is recording the revelations and the resulting media and political fallout in real time. This immediacy makes paranoia seem like a more than sensible and reasonable state of mind for any American and even for the rest of the world.
Citizenfour is one of the best films of the year (2014), and it is probably the most important film of the year. Poitras proves that the documentary and the non-fiction film narrative are more important than ever.

Customers who watch the pilots will visit modern day Paris, step into the world of a vigilante who has visions from God, follow along as a psycho-physiological illness tears apart a town, explore the complexities of marriage, and take a trip to a country club in 1980’s New Jersey. Once again, customers are invited to watch and provide feedback on the shows they want to see turned into full series. Anthology Series Inspired by Soderbergh’s 2009 Film Explores a World Where Love Has a Price
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Starz today announced the greenlight of “The Girlfriend Experience,” a 13-part anthology series produced by Transactional Pictures. Inspired by the 2009 Magnolia Pictures film of the same title, Steven Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman will serve as executive producers along with independent filmmakers Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz, who will also write and direct on the series.

“The Girlfriend Experience” explores the relationships of the most exclusive courtesans who provide their clients with far more than just sex. These purveyors – or GFEs (Girlfriend Experience) – share intimacies more common to romantic partners or husbands and wives, becoming quasi-lovers and confidants who are richly paid for their time.
The original feature, directed by Soderbergh and written by Brian Koppelman and David Levien, screened at the Sundance Film Festival in 2009.

The question is whether they define a new genus of contemporary relationship, or have relationships always been transactionally based in one form or another?”
Soderbergh, whose distinguished career spans across television, film and stage, won a 2013 Emmy® Award for Outstanding Directing for the television film “Behind the Candelabra” which debuted on HBO last year. He earned the Academy® Award in 2000 for directing Traffic, the same year he was nominated for Erin Brockovich. Soderbergh earlier gained an Academy® Award nomination for Best Original Screenplay for sex, lies, and videotape, his feature film directorial debut. His other credits include Magic Mike, Contagion, The Oceans Trilogy, Out of Sight, King of the Hill and many other films and documentaries.
Fleishman, who produced Soderbergh’s concert film about the group Yes in 1985, is a writer, producer, documentary journalist, and entrepreneur with a legal background who attended the York University Film School. Nominated for a Peabody® award for his 13-hour CBC documentary series "The Future of the Jews," Fleishman founded and became a principal owner of Command Post and Transfer Corp. Command Post was later acquired by Technicolor.

Anthology Series Inspired by Soderbergh’s 2009 Film Explores a World Where Love Has a Price

Inspired by the 2009 Magnolia Pictures film of the same title, Steven Soderbergh and Philip Fleishman will serve as executive producers along with independent filmmakers Lodge Kerrigan and Amy Seimetz, who will also write and direct on the series.

The American Cinema Editors (ACE) is an honorary society of motion picture editors founded in 1950. According to the group’s website, film editors are voted into membership on the basis of their professional achievements, their dedication to the education of others and their commitment to the craft of editing. Alfonso Cuarón Wins Directors Guild Top Prize for "Gravity"

The winners of the Directors Guild of America Outstanding Directorial Achievement Awards for 2013 were announced Saturday, January 25, 2014 during the 66th Annual DGA Awards Dinner at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza in Los Angeles.
Alfonso Cuarón won the DGA’s Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film for Gravity. Historically the DGA Awards are a good predictor of the five directors who will receive Oscar nominations. Four of the five directors who received Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Feature Film nominations this year also received best director Oscar nominations, and Cuarón was one of the Oscar nom recipients.

In a surprise announcement, DGA President Paris Barclay called former National Vice President Steven Soderbergh to the stage to accept the Robert B. Aldrich Award in honor of Soderbergh’s extraordinary service to the DGA and its membership. Joined by former DGA President/current Secretary-Treasurer Michael Apted and former DGA President Taylor Hackford, Barclay thanked Soderbergh for his devotion to the Guild, especially his work to protect and extend the creative rights of directors. Soderbergh, who was first elected to the National Board in 2001, served for nine years as National Vice President before stepping down last June. Soderbergh was also a founding member of the Guild’s Independent Directors Committee, a chair of the Eastern Directors Council, a member of the Western Directors Council, and he chaired DGA Honors three times. Soderbergh currently serves on the PAC Leadership Council and the DGA Foundation, and he is co-chair of the Guild’s Theatrical Creative Rights Committee, a position he has held since 2002.

Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Special Awards:
In a surprise announcement, DGA President Paris Barclay called former National Vice President Steven Soderbergh to the stage to accept the Robert B. Aldrich Award in honor of Soderbergh’s extraordinary service to the DGA and its membership. Joined by former DGA President/current Secretary-Treasurer Michael Apted and former DGA President Taylor Hackford, Barclay thanked Soderbergh for his devotion to the Guild, especially his work to protect and extend the creative rights of directors. Soderbergh, who was first elected to the National Board in 2001, served for nine years as National Vice President before stepping down last June. Soderbergh was also a founding member of the Guild’s Independent Directors Committee, a chair of the Eastern Directors Council, a member of the Western Directors Council, and he chaired DGA Honors three times. Soderbergh currently serves on the PAC Leadership Council and the DGA Foundation, and he is co-chair of the Guild’s Theatrical Creative Rights Committee, a position he has held since 2002.

2013 Primetime Emmy Award Winners List
