TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Orlando Jones says that he was fired from  Starz's "American Gods" for having "the wrong message for black America."  Gabrielle Union, fired from NBC's "America's Got Talent" for her being a "difficult" black woman shouts out to him.

STREAMING - From THR:  Amazon has paid 25 million dollars for a Peter Berg-directed music documentary starring Rihanna.

STREAMING - From YahooEntertainment:  Netflix is running a Christmas comedy special from Brazil, entitled "The First Temptation of Christ," which apparently implies that Jesus Christ was gay.  More than a million angry viewers have signed a petition demanding that Netflix remove it its service.

STREAMING - From IndieWire:  Here is a detailed article about what is known about Amazon's secretive "The Lord of the Rings" TV series.  By the way, it is a prequel set thousands of years before the events depicted in the original "The Lord of the Rings" novels and films.

GOLDEN GLOBES - From IndieWire:  "Queen & Slim" director Melina Matsoukas says "Golden Globe" voters refused to watch her film prior to voting for the awards.  Members of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, who vote for the Globes, were offered three screening, which hardly any members attended, according to the direction and the film's distributor, Universal Pictures.

MOVIES - From Deadline:  The U.S. Library of Congress has added 25 films to the "National Film Registry," and that includes Prince's musical semi-autobiographical film, "Purple Rain" (1984).  A record seven films directed by women were added, including Kimberly Pierce's "Boy's Don't Cry" (1999) and Elaine May's "A New Leaf" (1971), the first film from a major American studio in which a woman was the star, writer, and director.

From THR:  "Harriet," the biographical drama about abolitionist Harriet Tubman, has grossed more than 40 million dollars at the domestic box office.  That makes it one of the most successful biographical dramas for Focus Features, a specialty film label.

CELEBRITY - From YahooCBS:  For "CBS Sunday Morning" (Sun., Dec. 8th) Turner Classic Movies' host Bill Mankiewicz interviewed Mel Brools on comedy, on love (his late wife, Anne Bancroft), and on his films (especially "Blazing Saddles").

From THR:  The actor Danny Aiello has died at the age of 86, Thursday, December 12, 2019.  He is best known as Cher's lovelorn suitor in "Moonstruck" (1987) and as "Sal" the pizza joint owner in Spike Lee's "Do The Right Thing" (1989), for which he earned a best supporting actor Oscar nomination.  Aiello won a Daytime Emmy Award in 1981 for his appearance on the "ABC Afterschool Special" in 1980.

From CNN:  Swedish pop singer, songwriter, and recording artist, Marie Fredriksson, has died at the age of 61, Monday, December 9, 2019.  She was best known as a member of the Swedish pop music duo, "Roxette," which has a string of hits in the late 1980s and early 1990s, including "The Look" and "It Must Have Been Love."  She also recorded as a solo artist from 1984 to 2018.

From Deadline:  The actor Rene Auberjonois has died at the age of 79, Sunday, December 8, 2019.  Auberjonois is best known for two roles.  He was Clayton Endicott III on ABC's sitcom, "Benson" (1979-1986).  He was "Odo" on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" (1993-1999).  He was also a prolific voice actor in animated TV series and films ("The Little Mermaid."

From Deadline:   The actor Ron Leibman has died at the age of 82, Friday, December 6, 2019.  He won a Tony Award for playing infamous attorney, Roy Cohn, in the play, "Angels in America: Millennium Approaches."  He won an Emmy Award for his starring role in the short-lived CBS crime drama, "Kaz" (1978-79).

OSCARS - From Deadline:  Kevin Hart was named as host of the 2019 Academy Awards ceremony in Feb. 2019.  He has now stepped down as host after anti-LGBTQ social media posts he made a decade ago came to light.

From Deadline:  The LGBTQ advocacy organization, GLAAD, did not want Kevin Hart to step down as host of the 2019 Oscars ceremony.  They wanted him to step up at the ceremony for a teachable moment.

From THR:  The actor Wright King died at the age of 95, Sunday, November 25, 2018.  Movie fans may remember King for the kiss he received from Vivien Leigh's "Blanche DuBois" in Elia Kazan's film, "A Streetcar Named Desire."  Classic TV fans will remember him as "Jason Nichols," the deputy sheriff turned sidekick of Steve McQueen's bounty hunter character, "Josh Randall" in 11 episodes of the CBS Western, "Wanted: Dead or Alive."

From THR:  The actor, dancer, and singer, Ken Berry, has died at the age of 85, Saturday, December 1, 2018.  Berry was a popular television actor from the 1960s to the 1980s and may be best known for his stint on the 1965-67 ABC series, "F Troop."  Others may know him for his role as "Venton Harper" in the 1980s series, "Mama's Family."  Of note, Leonard Nimoy of "Star Trek" helped start Berry's career in Hollywood.

From ABC:  The 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, has died at the age of 94, Friday, November 30, 2018.  Elected in 1988, Bush's term ran from 1989 to 1993.  Bush also served two terms as the Vice-President to the 40th U.S. President, Ronald Reagan.

From Variety:  Recording artist, DJ, and music producer, Tim Bergling, has died at the age of 28, Friday, April 20, 2018.  Best known as "Avicii," he was one of the most successful electronic dance music (EDM) artists of all times.  His hits included "Levels" and "Wake Me Up."  He produced and remixed music for Daft Punk, Madonna, and Coldplay.

From WWE:  Professional wrestler Bruno Sammartino has died at the age of 82, Wednesday, April 18, 2018.  Born in Italy, he became a professional wrestler in 1959 and was best known for his work with the WWWF, now known as the WWE.

From ABC:  Former First Lady Barbara Bush has died at the age of 92, Tuesday, April 17, 2018.  She was the wife of the 41st President of the United States, George Herbert Walker Bush, and mother of the 43rd President, George Walker Bush.  Mrs. Bush was also the mother of the 43rd Governor of the State of Florida, John Ellis "Jeb" Bush, Sr.

From Deadline:  The actor and magician, Harry Anderson, has died at the age of 65, Monday, April 16, 2018.  Anderson was best known for his starring role in the long-running NBC sitcom, "Night Court" (1984 to 1992 - 9 seasons).  He later starred in the CBS sitcom, "Dave's World" (1993 to 1997 - 4 seasons).

From THR:  U.S. Marine,Vietnam veteran, and actor, R. Lee Ermey, has died at the age of 74, Sunday, April 15, 2018.  Ermey may be best remembered for his role as "Gunnery Sergeant Hartman" in Stanley Kubrick's 1987 film, "Full Metal Jacket."  Kubrick allowed Ermey to improvise his performance, which Kubrick rarely did.  He was also a voice performer in Disney/Pixar's "Toy Story" films.

From Variety:  Italian film director, Vittorio Taviani, has died at the age of 88, Sunday, April 15, 2018.  Vittorio and his brother, Paolo (who is still living), directed their films together.  The brothers won the Cannes Film Festival's "Palme d'Or" in 1977 for the film, "Padre padrone."

From ESPN:  Tommy Nobis, NFL and college football great, has died at the age of 74, Thursday, December 14, 2017.  Playing for the University of Texas Longhorns, Nobis appeared on the covers of "Sports Illustrated" and "Life."  He was the first player drafted by the then expansion NFL team, the Atlanta Falcons, in the 1966 NFL draft.  After professional football, Nobis co-founded the Tommy Nobis Center to help people with disabilities gets job training.

Prince's Paisley Park Kicks off "Celebration 2017"

Celebration 2017 Kicks Off at Prince’s Paisley Park Honoring His Life and Legacy

Historic Event Features Live Performances, Panel Discussions, Exclusive Concert Screenings and Museum Tours Honoring the Life and Legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson

CHANHASSEN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Prince’s Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota, started Celebration 2017 with exciting speakers and performers participating in the four days of activities. All events are being held at Prince’s historic recording sanctuary outside Minneapolis, honoring the life and legacy of the music icon Prince Rogers Nelson.

Fans from around the world arrived to enjoy four days of live music, panel discussions and special presentations highlighting Prince’s tremendous talent, influence and importance as a composer, musician, producer, live performer and filmmaker. The list of special guests includes close creative collaborators and friends spanning five decades in Prince’s life – from his childhood in North Minneapolis through to his stratospheric success.

Celebration 2017 is making history by bringing to Paisley Park musicians crossing all four decades of Prince’s performing career, from Morris Day and The Time, The Revolution, New Power Generation and 3RDEYEGIRL.

Highlights today included a panel discussion with New Power Generation (NPG) focusing on their years with Prince, 1989-2000, and a surprise performance by George Clinton Parliament Funkadelic, who revolutionized R&B during the ’70s, twisting soul music into funk. He was Prince’s longtime friend and collaborator who helped kick start his career. He also appeared in Prince’s 1990 film Graffiti Bridge.

Friday’s programing will feature a panel and performance by The Revolution, one of Prince’s backup bands, who appeared in the Oscar-winning film Purple Rain, and performed on the best-selling album of the same name.

Highlights on Saturday will include performances by Morris Day and The Time, one of Prince’s Minneapolis-based backup bands that performed at the 2017 Grammys in the Tribute to Prince. And panels focusing on Prince’s personal style, recording sessions and Paisley Park history.

Sunday will showcase 3RDEYEGIRL and NPG, along with panel discussions on Prince’s early days at the famed Minneapolis music club First Avenue.

At Paisley Park, Prince constructed and inhabited a creative reality that was wholly unique, allowing him to fluidly develop music and artistic works spontaneously and without limitation. Celebration 2017 reflects the spirit of the inaugural Prince: A Celebration event, hosted by Prince and held at Paisley Park June 7-13th, 2000. In subsequent years, Prince hosted similar immersive fan experiences at Paisley Park, first in 2001 with Prince: A Celebration “The Rainbow Children” and in 2002 with Xenophobia.

While live music and special events take place inside Paisley Park, several Minneapolis-St. Paul area landmarks are scheduled to be bathed in purple light after sundown and include U.S. Bank Stadium, IDS Center, I-35W Bridge, Hennepin County Lowry Avenue Bridge, and Target Field. Fans are also encouraged to wear purple on April 21 and share pictures via social media using #PaisleyPark and #Celebration2017.

"Prince4Ever" Tribute Begins April 2017

Paisley Park Announces Special “Prince4Ever” Tribute Programming for the Month of April

CHANHASSEN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Prince’s Paisley Park in Chanhassen, Minnesota has announced plans for an enhanced tour experience throughout the month of April 2017, titled Prince4Ever, which will uniquely celebrate and honor the iconic life and legacy of Prince Rogers Nelson as the world marks the first anniversary of his passing. Throughout the entire month, fans visiting Paisley Park will be welcomed into Prince’s legendary creative sanctuary to experience new immersive audio-visual content that will bring a heightened sense of presence to Prince throughout the tour experience, showcasing rarely seen video footage, audio clips and artifacts in the exhibition spaces.

In addition, fans touring Paisley Park throughout the month will be welcomed to participate in a special photo project honoring Prince. All visitors will be offered a chance to have their photo taken in a special candle-lit setting on-site at Paisley Park. The photos taken prior to April 21st will be integrated into a special video that will be premiered online on that date. The Prince4Ever Paisley Park tour experience will be available exclusively throughout the month of April to fans on both the General Admission and VIP tours. Beyond this expanded tour experience, Paisley Park has announced that it will erect a special Prince4Ever tribute fence within the interior grounds of the property which will be set-up throughout the month of April. The fence will be located along the grass adjacent to the north parking lot at Paisley Park and will display archived fan-donated memorial messages and artifacts originally attached to the exterior perimeter fence in the weeks following Prince’s passing last year. On two Mondays through the month (April 3rd and 10th) fans will be welcomed onto the Paisley Park grounds free-of-charge between 9am and 9pm to attach personal messages in tribute and remembrance to Prince on the specially constructed fence. Visitors who have purchased tickets to scheduled tours throughout April will have the opportunity to view the Prince4Ever fence and add personal tribute messages as part of their overall Paisley Park tour experience. The Prince4Ever April initiatives build on the already announced Celebration 2017 festivities planned for April 20-23, 2017. The exclusive four-day Celebration event – set to bring together musicians, creative personnel, special guests and friends who worked closest with Prince and knew him best – will feature live music, panel discussions and presentations on Prince’s tremendous talent, influence and importance as a composer, musician, producer, live performer and filmmaker.
