VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES NEW MANGA SERIES ACQUISITIONS AT OTAKON 2017
New Titles Scheduled To Launch In 2018 Include The Shojo Series TAKANE & HANA, A RWBY Prequel, And More
San Francisco, CA – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, thrilled audiences during its official panel held this past weekend at Otakon 2017 as it detailed a variety of new publishing acquisitions.
The titles set for publication beginning in early 2018 include the shojo series TAKANE & HANA, a hilarious romance about a courtship of opposites; as well as THE YOUNG MASTER’S REVENGE, a shojo romantic comedy featuring a conniving boy who schemes to make a troublesome girl fall in love with him.
Also announced was THE ART OF THE SECRET WORLD OF ARRIETTY, a print-only hardcover edition set for release next Spring that will feature an extensive collection of production and concept art and other insights into the acclaimed film by Studio Ghibli.
VIZ Media also revealed plans to publish a volume of RWBY prequel stories based on the mega-popular RWBY animated series from Rooster Teeth. Previously available in the digital magazine WEEKLY SHONEN JUMP, the RWBY manga is written and illustrated by Shirow Miwa, who is widely acclaimed for his series DOGS: BULLETS AND CARNAGE (also published by VIZ Media).

Full-Color Releases For CASTLE IN THE SKY And PRINCESS MONONOKE Capture The Magic Of These Extraordinary Studio Ghibli Feature Films

The new books expand VIZ Media’s Studio Ghibli Library and capture the magic of the legendary studio’s animated films with easy-to-read text, full-color pictures direct from the film, and a family-friendly oversized hardcover format aimed at readers of all ages.
Castle in the Sky, Studio Ghibli’s first feature film, celebrated its 30th Anniversary in 2016. This year marks the 20th Anniversary of the North American theatrical release of Princess Mononoke, which has gone on to become one of the studio’s most popular anime films.

DENVER--(BUSINESS WIRE)--“Princess Mononoke,” the classic animated film from groundbreaking writer/director Hayao Miyazaki and the legendary Studio Ghibli, returns to movie theaters for two nights only for a dual celebration of the beloved historical fantasy’s 20th anniversary and Miyazaki’s birthday. Hailed in 1997 by Roger Ebert as "a great achievement and a wonderful experience, and one of the best films of the year," “Princess Mononoke: 20th Anniversary” comes to U.S. cinemas, subtitled on Thursday, January 5, 2017 at 7:00 p.m. and English-dubbed on Monday, January 9, at 7:00 p.m. (all local times), presented by Fathom Events, in partnership with GKIDS.

Los Angeles, CA – As part of their Moebius May celebrations, Humanoids reveals work-in-progress artwork from an upcoming Moebius-inspired print based on the worldwide bestselling graphic novel The Incal, created by Alexandro Jodorowsky and Moebius. The print will be available from Mondo at this year’s San Diego Comic Con, July 21-24, 2016.
Jean Giraud aka Moebius was born on May 8, 1938 and was one of the co-founders of Humanoids (Les Humanoïdes Associés). The multiple Eisner and Harvey award winner has been cited as an influence by filmmakers such as Ridley Scott and Hayao Miyazaki, as well as by artists the world over. The concept artist behind ground-breaking films like Alien, TRON and The Abyss, as well as a concept designer on The Fifth Element, is even more acknowledged for his works in comics and graphic novels, including: Arzach, The Eyes of the Cat, and the The Incal, among many others.
Inducted into the Jack Kirby Hall of Fame, Will Eisner Award Hall of Fame and the Science Fiction Hall of Fame amongst a lengthy list of international awards, Jean Giraud passed away in 2012, but his legacy and influence on filmmakers, designers, and artists around the world is keenly felt to this day. When asked to create a print based on the work of this legendary artist, Florian Bertmer said:
"I remember there were a few things that ran through my mind when asked to do a print based on The Incal. For one, I was obviously excited, and I have to admit felt honored to be asked to do it. Keep in mind we are talking about a comic book that was not only drawn by the godlike Jean Giraud, but also written by the one and only Alexandro Jodorowsky himself. It's kinda the comic book equivalent of the Ark of Covenant.
The other things going through my mind? Pure horror and dread. After many sleepless nights and mediocre sketches, I decided to not base my art on events from the book at all, but on what follows after John [Difool] saves the universe and gets reborn. Even though he is the savior, he is still the fool from the beginning, and his karma dooms him to be reborn and relive everything. We see him sitting confused and alone with all these key figures from his past life walking past him. Nobody recognizes him and vice versa.. The only memory he has are the creator's last words: 'Remember!'"

Jay Gunn Talks About His New Comic Book, "Surface Tension"
WE ARE ALL MADE OF WATER.
This May sees the release of Surface Tension #1 (from Titan Comics), a new creator-owned comic book series by Jay Gunn. Advanced reviews describe Surface Tension as "mysterious and intriguing", and "Princess Mononoke meets The Walking Dead".
This genre-bending ecological fable with elements of horror and fantasy is difficult to define with one exception - the quality of both art and storytelling is outstanding. There is no doubt that Surface Tension is "set to be a monstrous hit" (Laura Sneddon, Comics Beat).
Owen Johnson, Senior Press and Marketing Officer for Titan Comics sat down with Jay to discuss his new series, the influences behind it, and what readers can expect.
OWEN: Why comics?
JAY GUNN: Creator owned comics are one of the few visual mediums where you can still present complex ideas and themes and also be entertaining without having to sacrifice integrity or vision. I've always loved comics when I was a kid, 2000ad blew my mind. Now I get to read comics on a wide range of subjects and cultures. There's more to comics than just super heroes.
How did you some up with the idea of Surface Tension?
It came out of a debate that I had with a friend. At the time I was quite pessimistic about the human race and was of the opinion that the planet would be better without us. My friend was convinced that we would eventually learn to live in harmony with the planet.
I decided to take this debate and make it the backbone of a story, turning the two differing opinions into fictional characters, both of whom have the power to save or to destroy the world. Who would win and would the winning outcome be for the best?
OWEN: What can readers expect from the mini-series?
JAY GUNN: Lots of monsters, melting people, mystery and suspense! Actually, the book works on two fronts - on the surface it is a sci-fi horror romp that has lots of action and tension. Secondly, under the surface, the book is positing lots of questions to the reader; about our place in the world and do we deserve to survive when we've done so much harm.
There are lots of twists during the story, nothing is as it first seems. The book is not a typical 'post apocalyptic comic' there's so much more to it than just zombies. The reader will be taken on a great adventure, it's going to get very crazy in later episodes!
OWEN: What are the key influences on Surface Tension?
JAY GUNN: I've always responded positively to science fiction or horror that are parables or have something to say. John Wyndham's novel The Day of the Triffids or Miyazaki's Princess Mononoke are good examples of the sort of balance that I was aiming to achieve with Surface Tension.
I also put a lot of my own life experiences into the book. When I was a child my family lived near to a massive chemical plant that exploded and decimated a nearby village. I was then fascinated with how nature reclaimed that poisoned land. Just one of the many elements that influenced scenes in the story.
OWEN: Pat Mills described Surface Tension as, "written and drawn with passion" What does creating this comic book mean to you?
JAY GUNN: I poured a lot of myself into this book and I thought, if I only ever get the chance to make one book then I wanted it to 'mean something.' Not just for me but for the reader. We live in turbulent times and I didn't want to make a book that is a simply a reflection of our capacity to hate. I wanted to make something that inspires hope, even in the darkest of times.
I had a life threatening illness when writing and drawing this book and there was a time when I wasn't sure if I would actually see the end of the book. I decided to put that life changing experience into the story, you can see it in the way some of the characters evolve and change.
The fact that I achieved my goal, beat the illness and created a book that I'm very proud of was all the passion I needed. The story reflects that journey, it tells us that we should never ever give up.

The Wind Rises is a 2013 Japanese animated film (anime) biopic and drama from director Hayao Miyazaki. The film's original title is Kaze tachinu, and it is adapted from Miyazaki's manga (comics), Kaze tachinu, which was published in Model Graphix magazine from 2009 to 2010. The manga in turn is loosely based on the novel, The Wind Has Risen (1936-37), by author Tatsuo Hori.
The Wind Rises is a fictionalized account of the life of Jiro Horikoshi (1903–1982). Hirokoshi was a designer of fighter aircraft for Japan, in particular the Mitsubishi A6M Zero (or simple, the Zero), which was used by the Empire of Japan during World War II.
Walt Disney Studios released the film in English back in February 2014 through its Touchstone Pictures division. Frank Marshall acted as the English version's executive producer. The Wind Rises was the final film directed by Miyazaki before his retirement in September 2013.
The Wind Rises opens in Japan in 1916. Young Jiro Horikoshi longs to become a pilot, but cannot because of his poor eyesight. Jiro even dreams of meeting famous Italian aircraft designer, Giovanni Battista Caproni (Stanley Tucci), a figure that will often haunt Jiro's dreams over the years. Seven years later, two important things happen. Jiro begins studying aeronautical engineering, and he also meets a girl, Nahoko Satomi.
After he graduates, adult Jiro (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) starts working for an aircraft manufacturer (Mitsubishi). Jiro begins a quest to built a fighter aircraft for Japan that will match the best that any other country has to offer, especially that of Japan's ally, Germany. Jiro reunites with the adult Nahoko (Emily Blunt) and begins a romance with her. However, Nahoko's illness and his professional setbacks threaten Jiro's dreams.
The Wind Rises was somewhat controversial in Japan because of Jiro Horikoshi's aircraft inventions and how they were used by imperial Japan during the second World War. However, The Wind Rises is not a biographical drama in the conventional sense, which is why I call it a “biopic.” It is a movie with both biographical elements and fictional attachments. For instance, the Jiro-Nahoko Satomi romance is fictional, and Nahoko is a character from Tatsuo Hori's novel, The Wind Has Risen.
The Wind Rises not only takes a look at the life of Jiro Horikoshi, the man who designed Japanese fighter planes during World War II, but it is mainly inspired by his quest to create fighter aircraft for Japan that would match the best aircraft created in Europe and the United States.
The Wind Rises is an impressionistic spectacle. Miyazaki deliberately deviates from fact in order to examine the artistic process, revealing Jiro Horikoshi as an artist in full bloom. The “wind” in this film is a metaphor for the imagination that soars. The wind is also a vehicle by which the artist travels to meet the man who inspired him, Giovanni Caproni, in the realm of daydream and imagination – first as a pupil and then, as an equal. In this film, Miyazaki does not make “wind” ethereal; rather, it is beauty that is fragile and even corruptible.
The Wind Rises is a bittersweet goodbye from Miyazaki to his admirers and fans. This retirement had to happen eventually, but our sadness need no be overwhelming. The wind still rises, and the beauty of Hayao Miyazaki's art will live on.

LOS ANGELES, CA — The Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences voted Tuesday night (August 26, 2014) to present Honorary Awards to Jean-Claude Carrière, Hayao Miyazaki and Maureen O’Hara, and the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award to Harry Belafonte. All four awards will be presented at the Academy’s 6th Annual Governors Awards on Saturday, November 8, 2014, at the Ray Dolby Ballroom at Hollywood & Highland Center®.
“The Governors Awards allow us to reflect upon not the year in film, but the achievements of a lifetime,” said Academy President Cheryl Boone Isaacs. “We’re absolutely thrilled to honor these outstanding members of our global filmmaking community and look forward to celebrating with them in November.”
Carrière, who began his career as a novelist, was introduced to screenwriting by French comedian and filmmaker Pierre Étaix, with whom he shared an Oscar® for the live action short subject “Heureux Anniversaire (Happy Anniversary)” in 1962. He received two more nominations during his nearly two-decade collaboration with director Luis Buñuel, for the screenplays for “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “That Obscure Object of Desire.” Carrière also has collaborated notably with such directors as Volker Schlöndorff (“The Tin Drum”), Jean-Luc Godard (“Every Man for Himself”) and Andrzej Wajda (“Danton”). He earned a fourth Oscar nomination for “The Unbearable Lightness of Being” with director Philip Kaufman.
Miyazaki is an artist, writer, director, producer and three-time Oscar nominee in the Animated Feature Film category, winning in 2002 for “Spirited Away.” His other nominations were for “Howl’s Moving Castle” in 2005 and “The Wind Rises” last year. Miyazaki gained an enormous following in his native Japan for such features as “Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind,” “Laputa: Castle in the Sky,” “My Neighbor Totoro” and “Kiki’s Delivery Service” before breaking out internationally in the late 1990s with “Princess Mononoke.” He is the co-founder of Studio Ghibli, a renowned animation studio based in Tokyo.

She was a favorite of director John Ford, who cast her in five of his films, including “How Green Was My Valley,” “Rio Grande” and “The Quiet Man.”
An actor, producer, singer and lifelong activist, Belafonte began performing in theaters and nightclubs in and around Harlem, where he was born. From the beginning of his film career, he chose projects that shed needed light on racism and inequality, including “Carmen Jones,” “Odds against Tomorrow” and “The World, the Flesh and the Devil.” He was an early supporter of the Civil Rights Movement, marching and organizing alongside Martin Luther King, Jr. and often funding initiatives with his entertainment income. Belafonte was named a UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador in 1987 and currently serves on the boards of the Advancement Project and the Institute for Policy Studies. His work on behalf of children, education, famine relief, AIDS awareness and civil rights has taken him all over the world.
The Honorary Award, an Oscar statuette, is given “to honor extraordinary distinction in lifetime achievement, exceptional contributions to the state of motion picture arts and sciences, or for outstanding service to the Academy.”

Each year Academy members may sponsor one candidate for membership within their branch. New member application reviews take place in the spring. Applications for the coming year must be received by March 19, 2015.
New members will be welcomed into the Academy at an invitation-only reception in September.
LOS ANGELES, CA – The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences is extending invitations to join the organization to 271 artists and executives who have distinguished themselves by their contributions to theatrical motion pictures. Those who accept the invitations will be the only additions to the Academy's membership in 2014.

Hayao Miyazaki is one of Japan's most beloved animation directors. His first feature, The Castle of Cagliostro, was released in 1979. His film Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind, based on his own manga (published domestically by VIZ Media, Rated ‘T’), was released in 1984. In 1985 Miyazaki cofounded Studio Ghibli, through which he directed the box-office smashes Princess Mononoke (1997) and Spirited Away (2001), which won the Golden Bear at the 2002 Berlin International Film Festival and the Academy Award® for Best Animated Feature Film in 2003. Howl's Moving Castle (2004) received the Osella Award for technical achievement at the 2004 Venice International Film Festival. In 2005 VIFF awarded Miyazaki the Golden Lion Award for Lifetime Achievement. His other acclaimed films include My Neighbor Totoro, Kiki's Delivery Service, and Ponyo. Miyazaki's essays, interviews, and memoirs have been collected in Starting Point: 1979-1996 and Turning Point: 1997-2008. His final film, The Wind Rises, was nominated for both a Golden Globe and Academy Award®.
