“Treasure of Blood!”

Tarzan is one of the most famous fictional characters in the world. Tarzan was an orphan and the archetypal “feral child,” and in this instance, he was raised in the African jungle by great apes. Tarzan was born a noble, John Clayton, Lord Greystoke, but he rejected civilization and lived in the wilds of Africa as a heroic adventurer. Tarzan was created by Edgar Rice Burroughs and first appeared in the novel, Tarzan of the Apes, which began serialization in The All-Story in 1912, before it was published in book form in 1914. Tarzan would go onto to be a multimedia star, appearing in films, on television, and in comic books.

The latest Tarzan comic book is Dynamite Entertainment's Lord of the Jungle Volume 3. It is written by Dan Jurgens; drawn by Benito Gallego; colored by Francesco Segala; and lettered by Carlos M. Mangual. The story involves an event that occurred in the early years of Tarzan's adventures, and he returns to Africa to right a past wrong no matter what manner of beast or obstacle stands in his way.

Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #4 (“Treasure of Blood!”) opens in Africa, in the 1950s. Tarzan, Lord Greystoke continues his mission of retribution and has successfully broken into a museum to steal the “Diamonds of the Triad.” Once upon a time, these jewels were treasures from “the Valley of Mists.”

Tarzan's old friend, a local named Bouanga, tells the story of how Carson, a white hunter from England, first encountered Tarzan decades earlier. He also tells of the mission Tarzan undertook to save Bouanga's life – a mission to steal “the Treasures of the Mists.” But now, like then, Tarzan finds himself surrounded by men determined to take him down before he can escape with his treasures.

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. One of them is Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #4, which is only the fourth issue of a solo Dynamite Tarzan comic book that I have read.

Writer Dan Jurgens offers an old-fashioned jungle adventure that spans two eras of Tarzan's life. This is a gripping action-thriller that enthralls and engages on every page. I like that Jurgens captures both the human and the wild-man-warrior in Tarzan and that he shows the vulnerability of both sides. Tarzan knows loyalty and apparently, has compassion.

Artist Benito Gallego's storytelling remains gripping and thrilling, and it is some of the most beautifully drawn comic book art being published today. It is a good thing that Gallego's drawing style resembles that of the late comic book legend, Joe Kubert. Kubert had a four-year stint (1972-76) as writer-artist and later as writer-only of DC Comics' Tarzan comic book series, considered by some to be among his best work. Colorist Francesco Segala's lovely colors capture the varied moods of this story's settings, both in time and locale, and gives this tale a sense that it is from a bygone era. Letterer Carlos M. Mangual brings a sense of high drama and with his stylish, emotive fonts

Lord of the Jungle Volume 3 #4, like earlier issues, strongly delivers on the potential the first issue promised. I rarely read Tarzan comic books, but I will read this series' entire run. I highly recommend it to you, dear readers.

Comics Review: "RED ZONE #1" Throws Gasoline on the Cold War Fires

Red Zone is a new four-issue comic book miniseries from writer Cullen Bunn and artist Mike Deodato, Jr. Published by AWA Studios, the series focuses on an American professor who must fight his way out of Russia where he lived a former life full of long-buried secrets. Colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Steve Wands complete the series creative team.

Red Zone #1 introduces Randall Crane, an unassuming professor of Russian and Slavic Studies at NYU. After one of his classes, he gets a visit from Captain Simon Crow of the United States Army Special Forces. Crow tells Crane that the U.S. government is calling the professor in for a secret international mission in Russia.

Crow is leading a five-man extraction team, and their target is Elena Sidorov, a former Prima Ballerina Assoluta of the Moscow Ballet. What she knows makes her a high priority asset to the U.S., and she has specifically asked that Randall, once a close friend of hers, accompany the team. Not long into the mission in St. Petersburg, there are complications, and before he knows it, Randall is alone and forced to summon the secrets of his past.

THE LOWDOWN: AWA Studios marketing recently began providing me with PDF review copies of their comic book publications. My first PDF is Red Zone #1.

The characters, setting, plot, mood, drama, and action that writer Cullen Bunn offers reminds me of one of my all-time favorite action movies, director John Frankenheimer's 1998 film, Ronin, starring Robert De Niro and Jean Reno. The suspense, intrigue, shadowy characters, and the mission disaster: Bunn spins an espionage thriller that effectively works in the comic book medium. Bunn offers that thrilling slow burn the draws the reader into the narrative – just in time for the explosion.

Artist Mike Deodato, Jr. has refined his graphical and drawing style into a kind of photo-realism similar to that of Bryan Hitch's. It perfectly serves the moody and mysterious international thriller that is Red Zone #1. Lee Loughridge's skillful coloring adds layer upon layer of atmosphere, and Steve Wands' lettering and effects capture the edginess of this first issue.

This first issue of Red Zone is an excellent introduction to the series, and it definitely makes me want to return for more. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for really good comic books in general, regardless of genre, dear readers.

Scar is a fictional character and is the main villain in Walt Disney's Oscar-winning, animated feature film, The Lion King (1994), also appearing in the subsequent movies that comprise The Lion King film franchise. Scar is the ruthless, power-hungry younger brother of King Mufasa, ruler of the Pride Lands. Scar was originally first-in-line to Mufasa's throne, but he is suddenly replaced when Simba, Mufasa's son, is born. Scar eventually launches a plot to kill Mufasa and exile Simba, allowing him to rule the Pride Lands from Pride Rock.

Dynamite Entertainment's latest licensed Disney comic book series is Disney Villains: Scar. The series offers a new vision of one of Disney's greatest film villains. The series is written by Chuck Brown; drawn by Trevor Fraley; colored by Chiara Di Francia; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

Disney Villains: Scar #1 opens in the Pride Lands and centers on an enraged Scar. He is unable to accept that he will never be king – not so long as Mufasa and his new son, Simba, inhabit Pride Rock. Can Rafiki, shaman of the Pride Lands, talks some sense into him? In the meantime, potential allies are hatching a plan to capture Scar's corrupt mind.

THE LOWDOWN: Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles. Disney Villains: Scar #1 is the first comic book based on The Lion King that I have read. And yes, there have been a few.

Simply put, writer Chuck Brown and artist Trevor Fraley offer a delightful 27-page introduction to the tale of Scar. Brown really digs into Scar's personality and into his way of thinking, often playing it against the believes and actions of the Pride Lands' other animal characters. Trevor Fraley's art has a kids' comic book graphical style, and Chiara Di Francia's colors add a fairy tale quality to this first issue. Jeff Eckleberry's letters also give the story a nice pace, even the few intense moments.

I think that readers who didn't know that they wanted a comic book set in the world of The Lion King may find a treat here. I'm curious to see where this series goes. It seems to be a combination of prequel, back story, and side story to The Lion King, and that is intriguing.

From Variety: Japanese composer and record producer, Ryuichi Sakamoto, has died at the age of 71, Tuesday, March 28, 2023. He won an Oscar with David Byrne and Cong Su for composing the music for the film, "The Last Emperor" (1987). His film music also won him a two Golden Globes, a BAFTA, and a Grammy Award. He also composed the music for such films as "Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence," "The Sheltering Sky" (1990), "Little Buddha" (1993), and "The Revenant" (2015). With his band, "Yellow Magic Orchestra," he was a pioneer in several electronic music genres.

From THR: Television producer, N'Neka Garland, has died at the age of 49, Monday, March 27, 2023. She was best known for her 22-year association with the daytime TV soap opera, "General Hospital." She began as an assistant to veteran producer, Jill Farren Phelps, but she eventually worked her way up to series producer. In 2021, she shared a Daytime Emmy award win for "Outstanding Drama Series," after being nominated in that category the previous two years. Garland was also the half-sister of the late hip-hop and rap legend, Tupac Shakur.

From THR: Animator and animation filmmaker, Leo D. Sullivan, has died at the age of 82, Saturday, March 25, 2023. Sullivan was a groundbreaking African-American animator and a pioneer in Black animation. Sullivan also was a writer, producer, director, layout artist and storyboard artist at studios including Hanna-Barbera, Warner Bros., Filmation, DePatie-Freleng Enterprises, DIC Entertainment and Marvel Productions. He worked on TV series featuring such characters as Scooby-Doo, Fat Albert, and the Animanicas, to name a few. Sullivan also helped animated the original locomotive and graphics for the syndicated music series, "Soul Train." Sullivan co-founded the first Black-owned animation production company, Vignette Films.

Comics Review: "NIGHT CLUB #4" Brings Its Biggest Dick Out to Play

Night Club is a six-issue miniseries written and created by Mark Millar and drawn by Juanan Ramírez. An Image Comics publication and a Netflix production, Night Club focuses on a teen boy who is bitten by a vampire and decides to make the best of his new condition. Colorist Fabiana Mascolo and letterer Clem Robins complete Night Club's creative team.

Night Club introduces 17-year-old Danny Garcia, who had ambitions to gain fame and fortune as a YouTube star with his friends, DJ Sam Huxley and Amy Chen. Then, after a terrible accident, a vampire bites him, and his life goes awry. Instead of living like a stereotypical vampire, Danny decides to live “la vida loca” of a superhero.

Night Club #4 opens with Starguard (Danny), Thundercloud (Sam), and Yellowbird (Amy) having to deal with the fallout of their disastrous rescue mission. Danny is trapped, weak, and without a source of food … and the cops have him cornered. Sam and Amy aren't better, but maybe Amy can't think a way out of this.

So they need someone to come to their rescue. But what if a rescue isn't quite a rescue when Laskaras is involved?

THE LOWDOWN: Netflix/Millarworld sends me PDF review copies of their comic books. Thus, I have been lucky enough to get review copies of the first four issues of Night Club.

Writer Mark Millar specializes in a variety of bad-ass and crazy-ass mutha f**ka type characters. Big Daddy and Hit-Girl of Kick-Ass; Magneto-killing Professor X from Ultimate X-Men; beat-your-wife Henry Pym/Giant-Man of The Ultimates; Nemesis of the Nemesis comic books; the descendants of an evil Earth in Prodigy; and every single character in The Magic Order.

Detective Nick Laskaras, a powerful vampire, is one of Mark's newest “bastard of bastards.” He is the great darkness at the edges of Night Club – soon to strike at the heart of the narrative. I'm so scared of him that I was hoping he would stay away for a long time, but he couldn't stay away forever. After all, this is the fourth issue, so Laskaras returns with a vengeance, swinging the biggest d*ck possible.

Artist Juanan Ramírez and colorist Fabiana Mascolo, a team whose graphics and storytelling stand out from everything else, present Laskaras in all his reptilian and lava-eyed glory. The art and colors create a sense of anticipation; doom is coming. And we'll want to back for the fifth issue, dear readers, because the bastard seems ready to be a bastard to three young, dumb vampires.

Night Club is infectious and addictive, a vampire comic book determined to be a new kind of batty. I am recommending Night Club #4 as I did the previous three issues. Drink deeply of its fun; this comic book has flavors in layers and waves. And it only costs a $1.99.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS: Fans of Mark Millar and of vampire comic books will want to be bitten by Night Club.

Archie and the Gang in “Super Mecha Teens”

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character. In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics frequently publishes themed one-shot comic books featuring Archie's characters (sometimes referred to as “the Archie Gang”). The latest, the fifteenth in the series, is Archie & Friends All-Action No.1. It features one new story and two reprint stories. Entitled “Super Mecha Teens,” the new story is written by Daniel Kibblesmith; drawn by Ryan Jampole; colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

Archie and the Gang in “Super Mecha Teens”:

The story opens in the near future at “The Weather Station,” the nerve center for the “Super Mecha Teen Project.” Neo Riverdale is protected by “mechas.” Each mecha is a giant robot controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by a mental or neural link. Cadet Archie Andrews is the project's newest cadet, and he is “universal co-pilot,” which means he has “perfect neural compatibility.” Archie can be anyone's co-pilot.

But even future Archie is trapped in the eternal choice between Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge. Still, he is needed inside a mecha for battle. Will it be Betty's mecha or Veronica's. And if Cadet Andrews doesn't make a decision soon, Neo Riverdale is doomed. If he can't pick his best girl, can he pick his best pal?

THE LOWDOWN: I have been reading comic books, on and off, for the better part of five decades. I have sporadically read Archie Comics titles over that time, and I have always enjoyed what I read.

Recently, Archie Comics has been introducing new characters via five-page stories. “Super Mecha Teens” offers what seems like a new series with familiar characters in a new-for-them setting. So will there be more “Super Mecha Teens?” It would be nice, as it is an intriguing concept.

Writer Daniel Kibblesmith teases what could be a cool children's action comic book, one that would retain the eternal Archie Comics' love triangle: Archie, Betty, and Veronica. Ryan Jampole's art is pitch perfect for the concept. So, yes, there is potential here. Time will tell if we get more...
