“Sight for Scared Eyes”

Welcome, dear readers, to my continuing journey through the Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? comic book series, which began publication in 2010.  I continue to renew my subscription so that I can continue to review this series for you, dear readers.

Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #116 opens with “Sight for Scared Eyes,” which is written by Derek Fridolfs and drawn by Randy Elliot.  The story finds Mystery Inc.:  Scooby-Doo, Shaggy, Fred, Daphne, and Velma are tying up the case of “the Ogre of Oglesby Orchard” when Velma's glasses are broken.  So the gang is off to see the optometrist at “Made in the Shades,” where Velma can get an eye exam and new glasses.

However, the office is being haunted by a giant cyclops that keeps crashing around the place.  While Velma struggles to believe her eyes, the rest of Mystery Inc. sets its sights on solving the mystery of this one-eyed monstrosity.

The second story, “Jinkies” is, as usual, a reprint story and is written by Sholly Fisch and drawn by Dario Brizuela.  [This story was originally published in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #61 (cover date: November 2015).]  The story opens with Mystery Inc. in court for the trial of Rob Felony, who was haunting his condominium as “the Sublet Specter.”  While on the witness stand, Velma suddenly sees a ghostly jurist … that no one else sees!  If Mystery Inc. can't solve this strange new mystery, Velma's strange vision could help set Rob Felony free.

Both of the stories in Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #116 have as a theme, Velma's eyesight and her glasses.  Also, both stories are produced by some of this series' best contributors, writer Sholly Fisch, artists Randy Elliot and Dario Brizuela, and also Derek Fridolfs, who has been both writer and artist for this series, and is a writer, here.

“Sight for Scared Eyes” works quite well because it accurately captures a few things one can expect during a visit to a doctor:  waiting rooms, grumpy patients in the waiting rooms, harried assistants, and testy doctors.  Fridolfs also casually drops a clue about the end of the story at the beginning.

“Jinkies” seems a bit more implausible, even beyond the usual implausibility of Scooby-Doo, but Sholly Fisch offers a nice spin on the threat of wireless technology.  He also uses as a premise something of which we Scooby-Doo fans rarely consider.  How would any of Mystery Inc.'s cases stand up in court?

So, I recommend Scooby-Doo, Where Are You? #116 to all Scooby-Doo comic book fans.  Like issue #115, it is one of the best issues of the series of the last two years, and it is rare for this series to have consecutive exceptional issues.  And until next time, Scooby-Dooby-Doo!

MOVIES - From Deadline:   Oscar nominee James Franco will play Cuban leader Fidel Castro in Miguel Bardem’s "Alina of Cuba."  Mía Maestro is set to play Natalia “Naty” Revuelta, the Cuban-born socialite he has a passionate love affair with.

SCANDAL - From Variety:  A Los Angeles Superior Court judge has ordered actor Kevin Spacey to pay a total of 31 million dollars for his alleged sexual misconduct behind the scenes of the Netflix drama, "House of Cards."  The award also includes damages for lost money because Spacey's misconduct forced the production company, MRC, to remove him from the series for its final season.

STREAMING - From Variety:  Warner Bros. Discovery is going to merge its two streaming services, HBO Max and Discovery+, into a single service Summer 2023.

BLM - From NBCNews:  4 police officers federally charged by the U.S. Justice Department with civil rights violation in Breonna Taylor's death.

STREAMING - From Variety:  Warner Bros. Discovery has been quietly culling content from HBO Max — including several Warner Bros. movies that were exclusively streaming on the service — in what appears to be an effort to cut costs.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  FX has provided updates on the fifth "Fargo" series, it TV series based on the film, "Alien," and on its new miniseries based on James Claville's 1975 novel, "Shogun," was previously adapted into the 1980 NBC miniseries.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  Chris Rock's former live-action comedy, the former UPN and The CW series, "Everybody Hates Chris" (2005-09), will return as a re-imagined animated comedy, "Everybody Still Hates Chris."  The series will air on Comedy Central and stream on Paramount+.

CELEBRITY - From Deadline:  During a concert in Warsaw, Poland, Grammy-winning recording artist and Oscar-nominated songwriter, Sting, warned the audience that democracy is under attack worldwide.

From Deadline:  Film and television actor and director, Clu Gulager, has died at the age of 93, Friday, August 5, 2022.  He appeared in a number to theatrical and television films and throughout the 1950s and 1960s, he appeared in a many of TV Westerns.  Into the 1970s and 1980s, he appeared in numerous action, cop, and crime TV series.  He may be best remembered for his role in the 1985 cult film, "The Return of the Living Dead." Gulager was a 1969 Palme d'Or nominee for his short film, "A Day with the Boys."

From Variety:  American sportscaster and legendary Major League Baseball announced, Vin Scully, has died at the age of 94, Tuesday, August 2, 2021.  He was best known for his 67 years calling games for the Brooklyn and Los Angeles Dodgers, the longest tenure for any broadcaster with a single team.

From NYTimes:  Former professional basketball player and NBA legend, Bill Russell, has died at the age of 88, Sunday, July 31, 2022.  He played for the Boston Celtics from 1956-69, the team that drafted him.  Russell was an 11-time NBA champion (including 2 when he was a player-coach), 5-time league MVP, 2-time NCAA champ (University of San Francisco), Olympic gold medalist (1956 Melbourne Games).  He was the first Black head coach of any North American pro sports team (Celtics, 1966-69), and he received Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2011

From Variety:  Actress, singer, dancer, icon, and role model, Nichelle Nichols, has died at the age of 89, Saturday night, July 30, 2022.  Nichols was best known for playing communications officer, "Uhura," on the original "Star Trek" (1966-69) television series.  Uhura was a groundbreaking role for African-American actresses.  From 1977 until 2015, Nichols volunteered her time to promote NASA's programs, and to recruit diverse astronauts, including women and ethnic minorities.

From NASA:  In a feature on its website, NASA says that “Nichelle Nichols was a trailblazing actress, advocate and dear friend to NASA."

From THR:  Oscar-winning actress Whoopi Goldberg says that the late Nichelle Nichols "was the first Black person I'd ever seen who made it to the future."  Goldberg, like her friend, Nichols, is an alum of the "Star Trek" franchise.

BRITTNEY GRINER:

From ESPN:   A Russian court sentenced WNBA star Brittney Griner to nine years in prison Thursday, Aug. 4th.  Griner was arrested Feb. 17 for bringing cannabis into the country and pleaded guilty July 7, though the case continued under Russian law.

From ESPN:  The Biden administration has offered a deal to Russia aimed at bringing home WNBA star Brittney Griner and another jailed American, Paul Whelan, Secretary of State Antony Blinken said Wednesday.

John Carter is a character that first appeared in the serialized novel, Under the Moons of Mars (The All-Story, 1912), written by Tarzan creator, Edgar Rice Burroughs.  When it was first collected and published in hardcover, the novel was re-titled, A Princess of Mars (1917), the first of Burroughs' “Barsoom” novels, which were set on Barsoom, a fictional version of Mars.  The novel also introduced Dejah Thoris, Princess of Mars.

John Carter is a Confederate veteran of the American Civil War who is transported to Mars via “astral projection.”  There he gets a new body that is similar to the one he leaves behind on Earth.  John makes several trips back and forth between Earth (which the Martians call “Jasoom”) and Barsoom, and Dejah and John eventually marry and have two children.

John Carter first appeared in comic books in the early 1950s and continues today as a comic book character via Dynamite Entertainment.  His latest comic book series is John Carter of Mars.  The series is written by Chuck Brown; drawn and colored by George Kambadais; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  In the new series, a re-imagining of and a sequel to the original “Barsoom” novels, John Carter is back on Earth and discovers that Martians are being transported to Earth while humans are being transported to Mars.

John Carter of Mars Volume 1 #4 opens on Earth, and the ruse of John and Eite is revealed.  Now, the two must come together to save Earth and Mars from merging, and also from the plot of the Therns and their approaching asteroid of pure Ninth metal.

On Mars, Dejah joins Thai and her husband, Lt. Fred Hines, and his fellow army officer, Charlie.  They hatch a plan to take on the Therns and their mad leader, Etor.  As Etor moves up the invasion, on Earth, John is facing death again.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is John Carter of Mars Volume 1 #4.  It is the fourth solo Dynamite John Carter comic book that I have read.

Writer Chuck Brown continues his fresh take on John Carter, this time, with strong action and violence.  Artist and colorist George Kambadais shines in this fourth issue as he holds the story together as it jumps from planet to planet and from one plot twist to another.  As usual, Kambadais' art super-charges Brown's script and transforms it into powerful and attention-grabbing storytelling.

John Carter of Mars is fun, and I think it can be so even for teen readers.   It surprised me, and I am delighted that it did.  I hope this version is around for a bit.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Dynamite's Barsoom comic books will want to try John Carter of Mars.

“The End of All” Part VI: “Time to Die”

Killadelphia is an apocalyptic vampire and dark fantasy comic book series from writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander.  Published by Image Comics, it centers on a conspiracy in which vampires attempt to rule Philadelphia.  Colorist Luis Nct and letterer Marshall Dillon complete Killadelphia's creative team.

Killadelphia focuses on James “Jim” Sangster, Jr. and his father, revered Philadelphia homicide detective, James Sangster, Sr., a vampire!  Father and son lead a ragtag team comprised of a medical examiner (Jose Padilla), werewolves, a witch, and a rebellious, but special young vampire (Tevin Thompkins a.k.a. “See Saw”) in a bid to save Philly.  Their adversary is a former First Lady, the vampire Abigail Adams.

As Killadelphia #24 (“Time to Die”) opens, the legendary vampire hunger, Toussaint Louverture, leads his forces into Philadelphia. Meanwhile, See Saw remembers the lessons he learned from the fate of his mailman father.  He is ready to fight.  So are the werewolf Zubiya and her pack, and their ally, Tituba the Stregherian.

George Washington, Founding Father and Vampire King, and his forces watch.  The Sangsters and the allies gather.  The war begins.

THE LOWDOWN:  We have reached the final chapter of Killadelphia's fourth story arc, “The End of All.”  It prepares the way for the next arc, but before it departs, it leaves us with bittersweet and just plain bitter moments.

As much as I totally enjoy the vampire and werewolf bloodshed of this wonderful comic book, I also like the contemplative side of Killadelphia.  Writer Rodney Barnes and artist Jason Shawn Alexander consistently offer many side dramas, focusing on particular characters.  These vignettes illuminate themes or fill in details concerning current or coming story lines and subplots.

In Killadelphia #24, Barnes and Alexander reveal another side of Tevin Thompkins a.k.a. “See Saw.”  This is the side that will carry See Saw into war, but the authors are never shy about sharing the bitter harvest that America has been for African-Americans for centuries.  There is no glance into Tevin's story that is free of horror.  It is as if Barnes and Alexander are telling us, “This may be dark fantasy, suckas, but this ain't escapism.”  For a moment, the authors made vampires seem less frightening than the adversaries Tevin's father faced.  This won't be the last time the threat of vampires pales before the real horrors of the United States of America...

Although this is the final chapter of the current story arc, it is a perfect time to enter Killadelphia.  It is always a perfect time to enter Killadelphia.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of vampire comic books and of exceptional dark fantasy will want Killadelphia.
