Review: "Avengers: Endgame" is All A-Game

TRASH IN MY EYE No. 7 (of 2019) by Leroy Douresseaux

[This review was originally posted on Patreon.]

Avengers: Endgame (2019)
Running time:  149 minutes (2 hours, 29 minutes)
MPAA – PG-13 for intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action throughout, language and some crude references
DIRECTORS:  Anthony Russo and Joe Russo
WRITERS:  Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely (based upon the comic books created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby)
PRODUCER: Kevin Feige
CINEMATOGRAPHER:  Trent Opaloch
EDITORS:  Jeffrey Ford and Matthew Schmidt
COMPOSER:  Alan Silvestri

SUPERHERO/ACTION/DRAMA/FANTASY/SCI-FI

Starring:  Robert Downey, Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Josh Brolin, Don Cheadle, Paul Rudd, Benedict Cumberbatch, Tom Holland, Chadwick Boseman, Brie Larson, Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Karen Gillan, Tom Hiddleston, Elizabeth Olsen, Paul Bettany, Anthony Mackie, Sebastian Stan, Danai Gurira, Dave Bautista, Stan Lee, Bradley Cooper (voice), Vin Diesel (voice), Letitia Wright and Samuel L. Jackson

Avengers: Endgame is a 2019 superhero movie directed by Anthony and Joe Russo and produced by Marvel Studios.  The film is the direct sequel to 2018's Avengers: Infinity War and is the 22nd film in the “Marvel Cinematic Universe” (MCU).  This film is also based on the Avengers comic book created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby.  Endgame finds the Avengers and their remaining allies assembling once more to restore a universe devastated by their greatest enemy..

Avengers: Endgame opens three weeks after Thanos (Josh Brolin) used the Infinity Stones to disintegrate half of all life in the universe.  The Avengers and their allies make a vain attempt to force Thanos to undo what the snap of his fingers wrought, but that mission ends in disaster.

Five years later, Black Widow/Natasha Romanoff (Scarlett Johansson) oversees the surviving heroes:  Captain America/Steve Rogers (Chris Evans); War Machine/James Rhodes (Don Cheadle), Okoye of Wakanda (Danai Gurira) as they protect Earth.  Rocket (Bradley Cooper) and Nebula (Karen Gillan) of the Guardians of the Galaxy and the newly arrived Captain Marvel/Carol Danvers (Brie Larson) patrol the rest of the universe.  It is a time of sadness where there is little hope.

Then, Ant-Man/Scott Lang (Paul Rudd) appears out of nowhere, claiming to have escaped the Quantum Realm, and he believes that this realm may provide a way to reverse what Thanos did.  First, the remaining Avengers will have to convince estranged Avengers:  Iron Man/Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.), Hulk/Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo), Thor (Chris Hemsworth), and Hawkeye/Clint Baron (Jeremy Renner) to return to the fold.

Avengers: Endgame is one of the best superhero films ever made and one of the best films ever adapted from a comic book.  There is so much going on in this film that it seems impossible to review it, but I will try.  I can say simply and with as few words as possible that the acting, directing, writing, cinematography, film score, editing, production design, sound mixing/editing, and special effects and visual effects are all of exceedingly high quality.  They are all as good as you would hope, and I can say that often in this film, they are even better than we would expect.

Avengers: Endgame is not really about the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.  Rather,  Endgame resolves the story that began in Avengers: Infinity War.  It revisits some past films and offers closures and happy endings regarding some characters and key moments in past Marvel films.  Avengers: Endgame is the kind of happy ending the greatest modern film studio, Marvel Studios, absolutely had to deliver after giving us so many unbelievably popular and high-quality films.

Last year, I wrote that Avengers: Infinity War was the best Marvel Studios movie after Black Panther.  Now, I can say that Avengers: Endgame is the best Marvel Studios film after Black Panther; heck, Endgame might even be better than Black Panther.  Like Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame is brand maximization – the height of what Marvel Studios offers audiences through its films, and that is just fine.  In Avengers: Infinity War and now in Avengers: Endgame, directors Anthony and Joe Russo; writers Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely; the cast and the crew and the producers have created the very best of Marvel Studios.

Kids and Tweens Make Disney's "Descendants 3" a Hit

Disney Channel’s ‘Descendants 3’ is Highest Rated Telecast Among Kids and Tweens in Two Years

Disney Channel’s premiere telecast of Descendants 3 (Friday, August 2, 8 p.m.) drew cable TV’s highest ratings in more than two years among Kids 6–11, Tweens 9–14, Girls 6–11 and Girls 9–14. With 8.43 million Total Viewers (2+) tuning in for the third installment of the popular franchise inspired by Disney heritage characters, the movie was the No. 1 telecast of the day across all television. It grew 84% from DVR viewing over three days (L+SD to L+3).

The movie’s incredible showing in cable TV ratings and DVR viewing is the strongest in youth demographics since the July 21, 2017, premiere of Descendants 2. Descendants 3 ranked No. 1 for the day in every demographic measured by Disney Channel, delivering most remarkably among Kids 6–11 (2.7 million viewers, 11.3 rating), jumping 95 percent in L+3; Tweens 9–14 (2.5 million viewers, 10.4 rating); Girls 6–11 (1.9 million viewers, 16.4 rating), growing 92 percent in L+3; and Girls 9–14 (1.8 million viewers, 15.5 rating). Additionally, more than 2.5 million adults (2.0 rating) watched the premiere telecast of Descendants 3, including 1.7 million Women 18–49 (2.6 rating).

Fans gave Descendants 3 a wickedly wonderful reception across multiple platforms, and it is the No. 1 most social TV movie year-to-date. In the DisneyNOW app, the movie is the highest viewed Disney Channel Original Movie in a single day. In the iTunes TV store, Descendants 3 is the No. 1 TV Show (all genres). The movie’s soundtrack rose to No. 1 on the iTunes album chart (and has remained in the top spot since Saturday), and is also No. 1 on the soundtrack chart. Descendants 3 music videos have more than 111 million views in just five days—including more than 23 million views for “Queen of Mean,” performed by Sarah Jeffery as “Audrey,” which has held the No. 1 spot on YouTube’s DisneyMusicVevo for three days.

Viewers were first introduced to the teenage sons and daughters of Disney’s most infamous villains in Descendants, and their story continued two years later in its sequel, Descendants 2. The premiere telecasts for both Disney Channel Original Movies ranked as the most-watched of cable movie of the entire year (2015 and 2017) among Kids 6–11 and Tweens 9–14.

Five years into the franchise, the demand for a deeper experience with the characters, stories and music continues. The Descendants movies built opportunities across Disney beginning with New York Times best-selling books, licensed apparel, accessories, home décor and fashion dolls. Guests can experience a Descendants immersive experience (DescenDANCE Party) at Disney Parks and Resorts, select Disney Stores and aboard select Disney Cruise Line ships. Descendants 3 costumes will be available for Halloween 2019. Descendants 3 is available on DVD now.

Comic Strip Cat, "Garfield," Has a New Owner

Viacom to Acquire Garfield for Nickelodeon Portfolio

Nick Plans to Develop New Garfield Content for All Platforms and Consumer Products for a New Generation of Fans

NEW YORK--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Viacom Inc. (NASDAQ: VIA, VIA.B), through one of its subsidiaries, has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire Paws, Inc., the entity holding global intellectual property rights to the Garfield and the U.S. Acres franchises--including corresponding rights related to content, consumer products, and location-based experiences. The acquisition is expected to close in the upcoming weeks.

“Great content is core to the strength of our brands, and Garfield is a beloved character that continues to be part of the cultural zeitgeist with universal resonance across all ages”

The acquisition of Garfield is part of Nickelodeon’s strategy to be the home for the biggest franchises kids and families love, and it expands Nickelodeon’s growing portfolio of influential properties that already includes SpongeBob SquarePants, PAW Patrol, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, the forthcoming Blue’s Clues & You!, the first-ever SpongeBob spinoff, Kamp Koral, and an all-new animated Star Trek series.

Said Nickelodeon’s President, Brian Robbins: “This acquisition marks another step in our evolution toward being kids’ first stop for the best new content and characters, so we’re incredibly happy to have Garfield join our growing roster of globally loved franchises and to introduce this cool cat to a new generation of fans.”

Following completion of the acquisition, Nickelodeon plans to develop a new Garfield animated television series. Global merchandising rights to Garfield will be managed by Viacom Nickelodeon Consumer Products (VNCP), including the property’s existing portfolio of licensees. Garfield creator Jim Davis will continue to produce the Garfield syndicated comic strip.

“Great content is core to the strength of our brands, and Garfield is a beloved character that continues to be part of the cultural zeitgeist with universal resonance across all ages,” said Sarah Levy, Chief Operating Officer of Viacom Media Networks. "The acquisition of Paws, Inc. provides another opportunity for Viacom to leverage our platforms to extend the global reach of iconic IP.”

Pam Kaufman, President of VNCP, added: “Garfield is a global evergreen franchise that is a natural fit with Nickelodeon and our portfolio of iconic properties. With fans around the globe that span both kids and adults, we are excited to ignite Garfield into a multi-generational consumer products juggernaut and further deliver on VNCP’s ‘Every Age, Every Aisle’ mission.”

Created by cartoonist Jim Davis, Garfield is the most widely syndicated comic strip in the world (Guinness World Records), and the franchise spawned movies, TV shows, stage shows and merchandise. Garfield has received four Emmy Awards for Outstanding Animated Program, and Davis was inducted into the Licensing Hall of Fame in 1998.

Jim Davis said: “I’ve always tried to make people laugh with humor that is classic and appealing to both kids and adults. I’m delighted that Garfield is going to be placed in the capable hands of the folks at Nick. They know how to entertain and will be great stewards for the franchise. I am also excited to continue to do the thing that gets me out of bed every morning…the comic strip!”
