Third "Annabelle" Movie Now Filming; Due July 2019

Evil Comes Home as Production Begins on the Next Terrifying Chapter in New Line Cinema’s Annabelle Series

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Principal photography is underway on the third installment of New Line Cinema’s hugely successful “Annabelle” films, starring the infamous sinister doll from the “Conjuring” universe. Screenwriter Gary Dauberman (“The Nun,” “IT” films, “Annabelle” films) helms his first feature in the $1.5 billion “Conjuring” franchise. The new horror film is once again being produced by “Conjuring” universe creator James Wan through his Atomic Monster production company, and by Peter Safran, who has produced all the films, through The Safran Company.

Determined to keep Annabelle from wreaking more havoc, demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren bring the possessed doll to the locked artifacts room in their home, placing her “safely” behind sacred glass and enlisting a priest’s holy blessing. But an unholy night of horror awaits as Annabelle awakens the evil spirits in the room, who all set their sights on a new target—the Warren’s ten-year-old daughter, Judy, and her friends.

The film stars McKenna Grace (TV’s “The Haunting of Hill House,” “Gifted,” upcoming “Captain Marvel”) as Judy; Madison Iseman (“Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle,” “Goosebumps 2: Haunted Halloween”) as her babysitter, Mary Ellen; and Katie Sarife (TV’s “Youth and Consequences” and “Supernatural”) as troubled friend Daniela; with Patrick Wilson (“The Conjuring” and “Insidious” films, upcoming “Aquaman”) and Vera Farmiga (“The Conjuring” films, upcoming “Godzilla: King of the Monsters,” TV’s “Bates Motel”) reprising their roles as Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Dauberman also wrote the screenplay from a story by Wan & Dauberman. The executive producers are Michael Clear and Michelle Morrissey. Dauberman’s behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Michael Burgess (upcoming “The Curse of La Llorona”), production designer Jennifer Spence (“Annabelle Creation,” “The Nun”), and costume designer Leah Butler (“Annabelle Creation”).

From New Line Cinema, the film is set to open in theatres July 3, 2019 and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures.

"The Nun" Attacks Another Worldwide Box Office Milestone - $300 Million

“The Nun” is a Holy Terror at the Box Office, Crossing $300 Million Worldwide

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “The Nun” crossed another milestone, surpassing $300 million at the global box office, it was announced today by Ron Sanders, Warner Bros.’ President of Worldwide Theatrical Distribution and Home Entertainment.

“This success further demonstrates the extraordinary scope and appeal of James Wan’s “Conjuring”

Through Tuesday, the film has taken in an estimated $102.4 million domestically. It has also been #1 at the international box office for three consecutive weekends, taking in an estimated $199.7 million, for a worldwide total of $302.1 million and counting.

It continues to generate strong returns in Latin America and Mexico as well as the U.S. Hispanic markets, where the popularity of star Demian Bichir is a major draw. In addition, “The Nun” just opened at the top of the box office in a number of markets, including France, Italy, Russia and Korea. It currently ranks as the highest-grossing horror film of all time in twelve markets, including Indonesia, Brazil, Romania and UAE; the biggest-grossing film in the “Conjuring” universe in more than 30 markets; and the highest-grossing Warner Bros. Pictures release for the year in 26 markets, including Argentina, Brazil, Colombia, Indonesia, Romania, Poland and Sweden. In making the announcement, Sanders said, “This success further demonstrates the extraordinary scope and appeal of James Wan’s “Conjuring” universe. We again want to congratulate director Corin Hardy and the cast, led by Demian Bichir and Taissa Farmiga, and all the talented people who worked on the film who love to scare audiences and do it so well.”

From director Corin Hardy (“The Hallow”) comes “The Nun,” exploring another dark corner of “The Conjuring” universe. The terrifying film delves into the shocking origin of the demonic Nun Valak, who first made her evil presence known in “The Conjuring 2.” The film is produced by James Wan (“The Conjuring” films, upcoming “Aquaman”) and Peter Safran (“The Conjuring” franchise).

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of a nun, as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

“The Nun” stars Oscar nominee Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV’s “American Horror Story”) as Sister Irene, and Jonas Bloquet (“Elle”) as local villager Frenchie. The cast also includes Charlotte Hope (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (“Toni Erdmann”) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her role from “The Conjuring 2” as the title character.

"IT" Scares Half a Billion Dollars in Worldwide Box Office

New Line Cinema’s Box Office Juggernaut “IT” Floats Past Half a Billion Worldwide

The global blockbuster is now the top-grossing horror film of all time...and still climbing

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Continuing its record-breaking run, New Line Cinema’s horror thriller “IT” is surpassing $500 million at the worldwide box office today, after less than three weeks in release, it was announced today by Sue Kroll, President Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. The critically acclaimed blockbuster is now the highest-grossing horror film ever, breaking the 44-year record belonging to “The Exorcist,” one of the longest-held records in cinema history.

After shattering numerous domestic records in its opening weekend—including those for the top horror film opening and biggest September opening for any film—"IT” is still going strong.

Internationally, “IT” has terrified a growing global audience as the film continues to roll out to record-breaking results in overseas markets. Among the records the film has broken, “IT” scored the biggest opening weekend ever for a horror film in more than 30 territories, including the UK, Russia, Brazil, Mexico and Australia. In 17 of those territories, including the UK, Russia and Australia, “IT” has already become the top-grossing horror film of all time, and still counting. Anticipation is also building in several markets where the film is yet to open, including Germany, Italy and Japan.

Kroll stated, “Crossing $500 million is rarified air for any film, but for a horror film it is history-making, and we could not be prouder. The filmmakers and cast did more than make a box office hit; they created a communal, must-see moviegoing event that has reverberated around the globe and is still going strong. We congratulate Andy Muschietti, the extraordinary producing team, and everyone involved in ‘IT’ on reaching this amazing milestone.”

Directed by Andy Muschietti (“Mama”), “IT” is based on the Stephen King novel of the same name, which has been terrifying readers for decades. First published in 1986, IT became an instant classic. It continues to be counted among the best and most influential works of the undisputed literary master of horror, inspiring numerous film and television projects in the years that have followed.

“IT” tells the story of seven young outcasts growing up in the township of Derry, Maine, who call themselves the Losers’ Club. Each of them has been ostracized for one reason or another; each has a target on their back from the local pack of bullies…and all have seen their inner fears come to life in the form of an ancient shapeshifting predator they can only call It. Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day, with a small boy chasing a paper boat as it swept down a storm drain…and into the hands of Pennywise the Clown.

The film stars Bill SkarsgĂ„rd (“Allegiant,” TV’s “Hemlock Grove”) as the story’s central villain, Pennywise. An ensemble of young actors also star in the film, including Jaeden Lieberher (“Midnight Special”), Jeremy Ray Taylor (“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip”), Sophia Lillis (“37”), Finn Wolfhard (TV’s “Stranger Things”), Wyatt Oleff (“Guardians of the Galaxy”), Chosen Jacobs (upcoming “Cops and Robbers”), Jack Dylan Grazer (“Tales of Halloween”), Nicholas Hamilton (“Captain Fantastic”) and Jackson Robert Scott, making his film debut.

Muschietti directed “IT” from a screenplay by Chase Palmer & Cary Fukunaga and Gary Dauberman, based on the novel by King. Roy Lee, Dan Lin, Seth Grahame-Smith, David Katzenberg and Barbara Muschietti produced the film, with Dave Neustadter, Walter Hamada, Richard Brener, Toby Emmerich, Marty P. Ewing, Doug Davison, Jon Silk and Niija Kuykendall executive producing.

The behind-the-scenes creative team included director of photography Chung-Hoon Chung (“Me and Earl and the Dying Girl,” “Oldboy”), production designer Claude ParĂ© (“Rise of the Planet of the Apes”), editor Jason Ballantine (“Mad Max: Fury Road”), and costume designer Janie Bryant (TV’s “Mad Men”). The music is by Benjamin Wallfisch (“Annabelle: Creation”).

New Line Cinema presents a Vertigo Entertainment/Lin Pictures/Katzsmith Production, “IT.” The film is being distributed worldwide by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company. “IT” has been rated R for violence/horror, bloody images, and for language.

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--New Line Cinema’s widely acclaimed horror thriller “IT” smashed the record books with stunning opening weekend numbers on both the domestic and international fronts, it was announced today by Sue Kroll, President Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures. Based on Stephen King’s beloved perennial bestseller, the film took in an estimated $189.4 million worldwide.

Domestically, “IT” scared up an astounding $123.1 million, crushing multiple records in its first weekend, starting with $13.5 million Thursday night previews, which made history as the highest horror preview; the largest R-rated preview; and the top September preview ever. Through the weekend, the milestones continued to mount, just a few of which include: the top horror film opening ever; biggest September opening for a film of any genre; and highest non-holiday weekend release for an R-rated film. On its own, “IT” surpassed the all-time industry record gross for a post-Labor Day weekend. In addition, “IT” now stands as New Line Cinema’s highest opening ever, and moviegoers looking for the biggest scares gave IMAX® their #1 opening weekend in September. The records had begun falling even before release, as “IT” became the top horror pre-seller ever and Fandango’s top September pre-seller ever for any genre.

Internationally, “IT” also saw huge releases in 46 markets, topping the box office in virtually all of them. Taking in an extraordinary $66.3 million, “IT” had the largest opening ever for a horror film. Among the other benchmarks are: the highest opening weekend for a horror film and top September debut ever in Russia and Australia; the biggest horror film debut in Brazil, Holland and Poland; and Warner Bros. Pictures’ largest opening for 2017 in 19 markets, including Russia, Australia, Spain, Poland, Norway, Belgium, Finland, Denmark and Chile. Anticipation is high in major markets yet to open, including Sweden, Mexico, France, Argentina, Germany and Italy.

In making the announcement, Kroll stated, “Anticipation for ‘IT’ has been at a fever pitch since the record-breaking debut of its teaser trailer, and the film has exceeded all expectations. ‘IT’ is not only a tremendously successful entry in New Line’s expanding horror-verse, but its appeal transcends the genre. Everyone involved, including director Andy Muschietti, his cast, and the producers, did a remarkable job bringing Stephen King’s cherished masterpiece to the big screen. I want to congratulate them, as well as all of our colleagues at New Line, on this fantastic start. I also want to recognize the inspired marketing campaign, spearheaded by Blair Rich, and our worldwide distribution efforts, led by Jeff Goldstein, Veronika Kwan Vandenberg and Tom Molter, and all their teams. We look forward to strong reviews and word-of-mouth carrying the film well into the fall/holiday season.”

For as long as their town has existed, Derry has been the entity’s hunting ground, emerging from the sewers every 27 years to feed on the terrors of its chosen prey: Derry’s children. Banding together over one horrifying and exhilarating summer, the Losers form a close bond to help them overcome their own fears and stop a killing cycle that began on a rainy day, with a small boy chasing a paper boat as it swept down a storm drain…and into the hands of Pennywise the Clown.

Ewing, Doug Davison, Jon Silk and Niija Kuykendall serving as executive producers.

New Line Cinema’s “Conjuring” Universe Surpasses $1 Billion at the Global Box Office

Created by visionary filmmaker James Wan, the franchise reached the major milestone with just four films and is among the most successful horror series of all time

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--After just one week in theaters around the globe, New Line Cinema’s “Annabelle: Creation” has taken in more than $110 million, not only opening in the #1 spot in numerous markets, including North America, but quickly boosting filmmaker James Wan and producer Peter Safran’s “Conjuring” universe of films over the $1 billion mark at the worldwide box office. The announcement was made today by Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.

In making the announcement, Kroll said, “We are thrilled with the success of ‘Annabelle: Creation’ and enormously proud to continue bringing this hugely popular ‘Conjuring’ franchise to theaters everywhere. We congratulate our colleagues at New Line Cinema, our astute marketing and distribution teams, and everyone who put their collective creative energies together to tell such wonderfully frightening stories for movie audiences around the world to enjoy.”

Toby Emmerich, President and Chief Content Officer, Warner Bros. Pictures Group, stated, “This year marks the 50th anniversary of the founding of New Line, and without question the horror genre has always been an integral and important part of the company’s DNA. While the genre has certainly evolved over the decades, watching the critical and commercial success of the ‘Conjuring’ universe has been truly spectacular and I am incredibly proud of all the talented people involved in making this happen.”

Together, New Line’s Richard Brener, President, Production, and Carolyn Blackwood, President, Content, Strategy & Operations, noted, “James Wan has a proven ability to tap into the minds of horror fans in a way few can. To reach this benchmark with just four films is truly remarkable. On behalf of everyone at New Line, we couldn’t be more excited for him, producer Peter Safran, and all the filmmakers who were so instrumental in making each of these movies so successful.”

In addition to opening in the #1 spot in the U.S. and Canada, “Annabelle: Creation” scored the highest industry opening weekend of all time for a horror film in numerous international markets: Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, Vietnam, Sweden, Poland, Portugal, Czech Republic, Serbia, Slovakia and Hungary. It had the highest opening weekend grosses of all films in the “Conjuring” universe in 26 international markets, including Korea, Indonesia, Russia, Eastern Europe and Scandinavia. The film dominated the Asian box office by ranking #1 in seven of eight opening markets there, out-grossing all comparable films regionally, and has already surpassed “Annabelle’s” lifetime cume in Portugal, Poland, Russia and Hong Kong, and both “Annabelle’s” and “The Conjuring’s” total cumes in Korea, Thailand and Vietnam. It currently ranks #1 in ten of the 11 markets that opened yesterday, including Mexico, Brazil and UAE, and is already dominating those markets, with Mexico and three other Latin American markets, as well as UAE, showing the highest opening days ever for a horror film in those territories based on the Thursday box office alone.

Individually, several of the films that make up the New Line horror-verse are among the top all-time earners at the box office, with the “The Conjuring 2” and “The Conjuring” coming in second and third in the genre, respectively, after “The Exorcist,” and “Annabelle” at number eight. The worldwide theatrical grosses for the films stand as: “The Conjuring 2” at $320,373,500; “The Conjuring” at $319,482,193; and “Annabelle” at $257,047,661.

Next up in the New Line series is “The Nun,” based on the character appearing in “The Conjuring 2,” directed by Corin Hardy, and due in theaters July 13, 2018. The studio is also in active development with Atomic Monster and The Safran Company on “The Conjuring 3” and “The Crooked Man,” the latter also drawn on the character appearing in “The Conjuring 2.”

In “Annabelle: Creation,” several years after the tragic death of their little girl, a doll maker and his wife welcome a nun and six girls from a shuttered orphanage into their home. They soon become the target of the doll maker’s possessed creation, Annabelle.

David F. Sandberg (“Lights Out”) directed from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman, who also wrote “Annabelle.” Peter Safran and James Wan produced the film, which stars Stephanie Sigman (“Spectre”), Talitha Bateman (“The 5th Wave,” upcoming “Geostorm”), Lulu Wilson (“Ouija: Origin of Evil,” “Deliver Us from Evil”), Philippa Coulthard (“After the Dark”), Grace Fulton (“Badland”), Lou Lou Safran (“The Choice”), Samara Lee (“Foxcatcher,” “The Last Witch Hunter”), and Tayler Buck in her feature film debut, with Anthony LaPaglia (TV’s “Without a Trace”) and Miranda Otto (Showtime’s “Homeland,” “The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy).

It will be produced by Wan through his Atomic Monster production company, along with Peter Safran, who has produced all of the films in “The Conjuring” franchise. “The Nun” is set for release on July 13, 2018.

When a young nun at a cloistered abbey in Romania takes her own life, a priest with a haunted past and a novitiate on the threshold of her final vows are sent by the Vatican to investigate. Together they uncover the order’s unholy secret. Risking not only their lives but their faith and their very souls, they confront a malevolent force in the form of the same demonic nun that first terrorized audiences in “The Conjuring 2,” as the abbey becomes a horrific battleground between the living and the damned.

“The Nun” stars Oscar nominated Demian Bichir (“A Better Life”) as Father Burke, Taissa Farmiga (TV’s “American Horror Story”) as Sister Irene, Jonas Bloquet (“Elle”) as local villager Frenchie, Charlotte Hope (TV’s “Game of Thrones”) as the abbey’s Sister Victoria, Ingrid Bisu (“Toni Erdmann”) as Sister Oana, and Bonnie Aarons, reprising her “Conjuring 2” role as the title character.

Wan’s Atomic Monster slate includes “Annabelle” and “Lights Out,” as well as the upcoming “Annabelle: Creation,” with Wan serving as producer on all. Co-creator of the “Saw” and “Insidious” franchises, Wan directed the worldwide hit “Furious 7,” and is next set to helm the highly anticipated feature “Aquaman.”

Safran also produced the sequel “Annabelle: Creation,” opening August 11th, 2017 and is producing “Aquaman.”

Hardy will direct “The Nun” from a screenplay by Gary Dauberman (upcoming “It”), story by Dauberman & James Wan.

Serving as executive producers are Gary Dauberman and Todd Williams, with Michael Clear as co-producer.

Joining Hardy behind the scenes are director of photography Maxime Alexandre (“The Voices,” upcoming “Annabelle: Creation”), production designer Jennifer Spence (“Lights Out,” the “Insidious” films), editor Michel Aller (“Lights Out,” “Paranormal Activity: Ghost Dimension”), and costume designer Sharon Gilham (TV’s “Black Mirror”).

“The Nun” is a New Line Cinema presentation, an Atomic Monster / Safran Company production, and will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Dwayne Johnson Stars in “Rampage,” New Action Adventure from New Line Cinema, Now in Production

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Global megastar Dwayne Johnson headlines New Line Cinema’s action adventure “Rampage,” for director/producer Brad Peyton. Beau Flynn, John Rickard and Hiram Garcia are also producing the film, currently on location in Atlanta, for an April 20, 2018 release. “Rampage” marks the third collaboration between Johnson, Peyton and Flynn, following the blockbuster “San Andreas.”

But a rogue genetic experiment gone awry transforms this gentle ape into a raging monster. To make matters worse, it’s soon discovered there are other similarly altered alpha predators. As these newly created monsters tear across North America, destroying everything in their path, Okoye teams with a discredited genetic engineer to secure an antidote, fighting his way through an ever-changing battlefield, not only to halt a global catastrophe but to save the fearsome creature that was once his friend.

“Rampage” also stars Oscar nominee Naomie Harris (“Moonlight”), Malin Akerman (TV’s “Billions”), Jake Lacy (TV’s “Girls”), Joe Manganiello (TV’s “True Blood”) and Jeffrey Dean Morgan (TV’s “The Walking Dead”); as well as P.J. Byrne (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), Marley Shelton (“Solace”), Breanne Hill (“San Andreas”), Jack Quaid (“The Hunger Games: Catching Fire”), and Matt Gerald (TV’s “Daredevil”).

Serving as executive producers are Marcus Viscidi, Dwayne Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Jeff Fierson, with Wendy Jacobson co-producing. The screenplay is by Ryan Engle and Adam Sztykiel, story by Ryan Engle, based on the video game Rampage.

The creative team includes production designer Barry Chusid (“San Andreas”), director of photography Jaron Presant (2nd unit, “Star Wars: The Last Jedi”), editor Jim May (“Goosebumps”) and costume designer Melissa Bruning (“Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”). Music will be composed by Andrew Lockington, who created the scores for “San Andreas” and “Journey 2: The Mysterious Island.”

The creatures of “Rampage” will be brought to life by acclaimed VFX supervisor Colin Strause (“San Andreas,” “X-Men: Apocalypse”), with five-time Academy Award-winning visual effects company Weta Digital (“The Lord of the Rings” Trilogy, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes”).

“Rampage” is a New Line Cinema presentation, a Wrigley Pictures/Flynn Picture Company/7 Bucks Entertainment production, in association with ASAP Entertainment. It will be distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures, a Warner Bros. Entertainment Company.

Shooting Begins on "Game Night" with Jason Bateman and Rachel McAdams

It’s Game On as Shooting Begins on New Line Cinema’s “Game Night”

BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Principal photography is underway on New Line Cinema’s action comedy “Game Night,” starring Jason Bateman (the “Horrible Bosses” films, TV’s “Arrested Development”) and Oscar nominee Rachel McAdams (“Spotlight,” “Dr. Strange”). Filming began on location in Atlanta, Georgia, under the direction of Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, marking their second film as co-directors following “Vacation.”

Joining Bateman and McAdams in the cast are Billy Magnussen (“Bridge of Spies,” TV’s “American Crime Story”), Sharon Horgan (Amazon’s “Catastrophe”), Lamorne Morris (TV’s “New Girl”), Jesse Plemons (“Black Mass,” TV’s “Fargo”), Kylie Bunbury (TV’s “Pitch,” “Under the Dome”), Michael Cyril Creighton (“Spotlight”) and Kyle Chandler (“Manchester by the Sea,” TV’s “Bloodline”).

Bateman and McAdams star as Max and Annie, whose weekly couples game night gets kicked up a notch when Max’s charismatic brother, Brooks (Chandler), arranges a murder mystery party, complete with fake thugs and faux federal agents. So when Brooks gets kidnapped, it’s all part of the game…right? But as the six uber-competitive gamers set out to solve the case and win, they begin to discover that neither this “game”—nor Brooks—are what they seem to be. Over the course of one chaotic night, the friends find themselves increasingly in over their heads as each twist leads to another unexpected turn. With no rules, no points, and no idea who all the players are, this could turn out to be the most fun they’ve ever had…or game over.

Goldstein and Daley are directing the film from an original screenplay by Mark Perez (“Accepted”). John Davis (“Joy”) and Jason Bateman are producing, with Marc S. Fischer, John Fox and James Garavente serving as executive producers.

The behind-the-scenes team includes director of photography Barry Peterson (“Central Intelligence,” “We’re the Millers”), Oscar-nominated production designer Michael Corenblith (“How the Grinch Stole Christmas,” “Apollo 13”), editors Jamie Gross (“Vacation”) and David Egan, and costume designer Debra McGuire (“Vacation,” “Ted”).
