Archie and the Gang in “Super Mecha Teens”

Eternal high school student and teenage boy, Archie Andrews, and his friends made their debut in M.L.J. Magazines' Pep Comics #22 (cover dated: December 1941), and before long, Archie was the publisher's headliner character.  In 1946, the company changed its named to Archie Comic Publications, also known as “Archie Comics.”

Archie Comics frequently publishes themed one-shot comic books featuring Archie's characters (sometimes referred to as “the Archie Gang”).  The latest, the fifteenth in the series, is Archie & Friends All-Action No.1.  It features one new story and two reprint stories.  Entitled “Super Mecha Teens,” the new story is written by Daniel Kibblesmith; drawn by Ryan Jampole; colored by Glenn Whitmore; and lettered by the great Jack Morelli.

Archie and the Gang in “Super Mecha Teens”:
The story opens in the near future at “The Weather Station,” the nerve center for the “Super Mecha Teen Project.”  Neo Riverdale is protected by “mechas.”  Each mecha is a giant robot controlled by two co-pilots whose minds are joined by a mental or neural link.  Cadet Archie Andrews is the project's newest cadet, and he is “universal co-pilot,” which means he has “perfect neural compatibility.”  Archie can be anyone's co-pilot.

But even future Archie is trapped in the eternal choice between Betty Cooper and Veronica Lodge.  Still, he is needed inside a mecha for battle.  Will it be Betty's mecha or Veronica's.  And if Cadet Andrews doesn't make a decision soon, Neo Riverdale is doomed.  If he can't pick his best girl, can he pick his best pal?

THE LOWDOWN:   I have been reading comic books, on and off, for the better part of five decades.  I have sporadically read Archie Comics titles over that time, and I have always enjoyed what I read.

Recently, Archie Comics has been introducing new characters via five-page stories.  “Super Mecha Teens” offers what seems like a new series with familiar characters in a new-for-them setting.  So will there be more “Super Mecha Teens?”  It would be nice, as it is an intriguing concept.

Writer Daniel Kibblesmith teases what could be a cool children's action comic book, one that would retain the eternal Archie Comics' love triangle:  Archie, Betty, and Veronica.  Ryan Jampole's art is pitch perfect for the concept.  So, yes, there is potential here.  Time will tell if we get more...

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of classic-style Archie Comics will want to find a copy of Archie & Friends All-Action No.1.

Comics Review: "DARKWING DUCK Volume 1 #3" - This Comic Book Keeps Getting Better

DARKWING DUCK VOLUME 1 #3
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Amanda Deibert
ART: Carlo Lauro
COLORS: Carlo Lauro
LETTERS: Jeff Eckleberry
EDITOR: Nate Cosby
COVER: Lesley “Leirix: Li
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (March 2023)

Rated “All Ages”

“Darkwing Duck” was an animated superhero comedy television series produced by Walt Disney Television Animation.  It originally aired for three seasons (for a total of 91 episodes) from 1991 to 1992, both as part of the syndicated programming block, “The Disney Afternoon,” and as part of ABC's Saturday morning lineup.  “Darkwing Duck” focused on a suburban duck, Drake Mallard, and his superhero alter-ego, “Darkwing Duck.”  The character was a parody of the pulp fiction vigilante character, The Shadow, and his alter-ego, Kent Allard.

Over a 15-year period, beginning with Disney Comics in 1991, “Darkwing Duck” was adapted into comics and comic books.  The current license holder is Dynamite Entertainment, and they have launched Darkwing Duck Volume 1.  The series is written by Amanda Deibert; drawn and colored by Carlo Lauro; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

Darkwing Duck Volume 1 #3 opens in St. Canard, the city hyper-vigilantly defended by the terror that flaps in the night, the ferocious fowl who plucks the evil eye from the face of foul play... Darkwing Duck!  Today, however, Darkwing Duck is nowhere to be found, and all the gardeners from St. Carnard City Park have vanished!  So where is the city's hero, asks Mayor Owlson?  Where is he when the city really needs him, she wonders.

Drake Mallard and his daughter, Gosalyn, are in the wilderness of Transylvania because Drake has a proposal to make to his girlfriend, the sorceress Morgana Macawber.  The proposal isn't quite what Morgana expects, and her father, Moloculo Macawber, and his new partner, Launchpad McQuack(!), have something to say about it anyway.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Darkwing Duck Volume 1 #3, the third Darkwing Duck comic book that I have read.

I have never watched an episode of the “Darkwing Duck” animated series, although I have always wanted to do so, nor have I previously read a Darkwing Duck comic book … although I have wanted to do so.  However, the magic that writer Amanda Deibert brings to this Darkwing Duck comic book makes me want to hurry up and watch some episodes.  This is simply a joy to read, and I lack the words to describe how happy reading this makes me.  Clever dialogue and sparkling fantasy characters:  it all comes together in hugely entertaining stories.

Artist-colorist Carlo Lauro's work here is now among my all-time favorite Disney comic book art and graphical storytelling.  Lauro fills his pages with fantastic images and action that pops off the page.  This is all-ages comics genius.

As I said in my review of the first two issues:  I hope that Dynamite can find success with this title and with its other recent Disney release, Gargoyles.  They are both excellent, and Darkwing Duck Volume 1 is flat-out great.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Darkwing Duck will want to try Dynamite's new Darkwing Duck comic book series.

Comics Review: "GEEK-GIRL #10" is Looking for Teammates and Super-Powers

GEEK-GIRL, VOL. 2 #10
MARKOSIA ENTERPRISES, LTD.

STORY: Sam Johnson
ART: Carlos Granda
COLORS: Chunlin Zhao
LETTERS: Paul McLaren
COVER: Fernando Melek with Chunlin Zhao; Carlos Villas
VARIANT COVER ARTISTS: Narcelio Sousa with Chunlin Zhao
24pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (January 2023)

Rated T+ / 12+ only

Geek-Girl created by Sam Johnson

“Identity Crisis Prelude”

Created by Sam Johnson, Geek-Girl is a comic book character that debuted in the 2016 Geek-Girl miniseries,  She returned in a second miniseries, 2018's Geek-Girl Vol. 2, which became an ongoing series.  Geek-Girl Vol. 2 is written by Sam Johnson; drawn by Carlos Granda; colored by Chunlin Zhao; and lettered by Paul McLaren.

Geek-Girl focuses on Ruby Kaye of Acorn Ridge, Maine, a sexy and popular college coed who inadvertently becomes a superhero.  Ruby dons a pair of super-tech pair of eye glasses that gives her super-powers.  Ruby's BFF, Summer James, then talks her into trying to be a superhero, even providing her with a moniker.  Now, Ruby is Maine's newest superhero, “Geek-Girl.”

Geek-Girl Vol. 2 #10 (“Identity Crisis Prelude”) opens in the wake of the battle with Mean Girl, which saw The Whupper seriously injured.  Meanwhile, Geek-Girl is still fronting a “super-team,” but the team has already lost a member.  Now, Ruby is enjoying some girlfriend-drinking time with “The Minger.”  But team training is supposed to start tomorrow, and the team is slightly in disarray.

Meanwhile, Pit Bull gets himself involved in an unexpected battle.  Will he end up needing help?

THE LOWDOWN:  Geek-Girl creator-writer Sam Johnson sends me PDF review copies of the latest issues of Geek-Girl, and has been doing so for several years.  I enjoy reading about Geek-Girl and her (mis)adventures.  I like this comic book enough to believe that encouraging you to give this series a try, dear readers, is something I must do.

Sam is an imaginative writer and his stories, in a deceptively quiet way, are riveting.  I am always disappointed when I reach the end of an issue.  I wish he could publish more frequently, because issue #10 has a great cliffhanger.  He can make the reader feel comfortable with his characters, but he is always introducing a new element.  I find myself always wondering about what Ruby Kaye is going to do next.  Everything is new to her, and we get to experience that newness.  So what is she going to do about that training session?

Artist Carlos Granda is a more polished artist with each issue.  His clear and emotive storytelling, which really shows under Chunlin Zhao's excellent colors, is inviting to readers.  Paul McLaren's lettering is sharper than ever and makes Sam's story pop.

I thoroughly enjoyed and heartily recommend Geek-Girl #10.  I am also recommending the three trade paperbacks that currently collect most of the series.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of lovable superheroes will find an all-around winner in Geek-Girl.
