“Love You Till Forever”

“Dynomutt, Dog Wonder” was an American animated television series created by Joe Ruby and Ken Spears and produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions.  It first aired on ABC from September 11, 1976, to October 1, 1977.  A superhero-comedy, the series focused on “The Blue Falcon,” a Batman-like superhero, and “Dynomutt,” a robotic dog who was both his sidekick and assistant.  Although Dynomutt could produce what seemed like an infinite number of mechanical devices from his body, such creations often resulted in the bumbling Dynomutt causing disaster and annoying the Blue Falcon quite a bit.

There have been very few comic books based on the Blue Falcon and Dynomutt, with the most prominent being the 1977-78, six-issue Marvel Comics series.  Dynamite Entertainment has launched a new comic book based on the series as part of its licensing agreement with Warner Bros. Discovery.  The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1 is written by Jimmy Palmiotti; drawn by Pasquale Qualano; colored by Jorge Sutil; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.

The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1 #1 (“Love You Till Forever”) opens in the nightmares of Radley Crown, but why should that matter?  Well, Radley is really the vigilante hero, the Blue Falcon.  Secure in his luxurious penthouse high above the downtown streets of Big City, Crown, a wealthy inventor and art collector, lives with his beloved and faithful canine companion.  It is a charmed existence, and Radley is on the verge of a technological breakthrough that will improve his ability to protect Big City.

However, this is a fateful day.  A vicious gang of thugs plans on shattering his complacency, and that will bring tragedy upon the life of Radley Crown.  How will he respond?

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1, Issue #1 is the latest, and it may be the first comic book based on this franchise that I have read.

This first issue of  The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1, as a first issue or first chapter, is really a taste of what is to come from the team of writer Jimmy Palmiotti and artist Pasquale Qualano.  Palmiotti offers a one-two punch of the excitement of the Blue Falcon and his canine pal and the dread of the evil to come, and both are really gripping and attention-grabbing.  This is a very effective way of engaging the reader's interest in finishing this first issue and also coming back for more.  I definitely feel excited, more than I expected.

Qualano's stylish art establishes the very slick and futuristic setting of Big City, but most of all, it hits all the emotional highs of Radley Crown and his dog as they prepare for a bright future.  Then, Qualano unleashes the pure brutality of the villains in a way the speaks to the readers and may make some of them feel slapped around (such as myself).  I feel like Qualano pulls me into this story and its emotional peaks and valleys.  This is some helluva storytelling.

I expect big things from The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1.  I will probably get it, going by this first issue.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Dynamite Entertainment's Warner Bros. comic book series will want to read The Blue Falcon and Dynomutt Volume 1.

LAIKA and the Obama's "Higher Ground" Unite for "Audition"

Wang and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok Will Adapt Katie Kitamura’s Booker Prize Longlisted Novel

HILLSBORO, Ore. & LOS ANGELES--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Higher Ground Productions and LAIKA have set a live action feature film adaptation of Audition (Penguin Random House imprint Riverhead Books, 2025), the Booker Prize-longlisted novel by Katie Kitamura.

Lulu Wang (The Farewell) will direct and write the adaptation alongside Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Martyna Majok, with Lucy Liu and Charles Melton set to star. Higher Ground and LAIKA will produce the film in association with Wang’s production company Local Time.

Audition is a twisty thriller that follows a celebrated actress enjoying a charmed, bohemian life in Manhattan with her creative husband. That is until a mysterious young man appears, claiming to be her long-lost son. What begins as a misguided reunion spirals into an enthralling mystery about identity, guilt, and the roles we perform.

President Barack Obama, who founded Higher Ground with Michelle Obama, included Audition in his 2025 Summer reading list, declaring the book a “quiet novel about the ways we hide our true selves from others – and ourselves.”

Lulu Wang is coming off her work on Expats, the limited series adapted from Janice Y.K. Lee’s bestselling novel. She served as showrunner, writer, and director of all six episodes. The series, which premiered on Prime Video, featured an ensemble cast led by Nicole Kidman, Sarayu Blue, Ji-Young Yoo, Jack Huston, and Brian Tee. Wang is also producing two highly anticipated projects for Searchlight Pictures: Again Again Again, penned by celebrated comedian and writer Joel Kim Booster, and The Eyes are the Best Part, marking the directorial debut of actress and writer Greta Lee. Wang first rose to international prominence with her sophomore feature, The Farewell, which she wrote and directed. Lucy Liu is a critically acclaimed actress, filmmaker, and artist with a global presence. Known for her roles in Kill Bill, Charlie’s Angels, Chicago, Presence, and Red One, her films have collectively grossed over $3.7 billion worldwide. Liu’s recent work includes starring in and producing Rosemead, which premiered at the Tribeca Film Festival and won Best Narrative at the Bentonville Film Festival, where she was honored with the Rising To The Challenge Award. Charles Melton is an award-winning and critically acclaimed actor who has captivated audiences with his performances in film and television. Melton most recently starred opposite Oscar® winners Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore in Todd Haynes' film May December, for which he earned a Gotham Award and New York Film Critics Circle Award, among others. Both the film and Melton’s performance were nominated for the Golden Globe, Critics’ Choice, and Film Independent Spirit Awards. Associated Press named him one of the top Breakthrough Performers of 2023, and Variety included him as 10 Actors to Watch. Melton has wrapped production on Nicolas Winding Refn’s My Own Private Hell for Neon. Up next, he will star in the second season of the highly anticipated Netflix Emmy® winning series Beef opposite Carey Mulligan, Oscar Isaac, and Cailee Spaeny. Other credits include Alex Garland’s Warfare for A24, the Warner Bros.’ feature, The Sun Is Also a Star and Sony’s Bad Boys for Life. Martyna Majok was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for her Broadway debut play, Cost of Living, which was nominated for the Tony Award for Best Play. Other plays include Sanctuary City, Queens, and Ironbound, which have been produced across American and international stages, and the libretto for Gatsby: An American Myth, with music by Florence Welch and Thomas Bartlett. Martyna is currently adapting Ray Bradbury’s Fahrenheit 451 for the Broadway stage, has developed TV projects for HBO, and is working on several feature adaptations. Her adaptation of the Atticus Lish novel Preparation for the Next Life will be released by MGM/Orion on September 5th, directed by Bing Liu with Plan B producing alongside Barry Jenkins' Pastel.

Katie Kitamura is the author of five novels, most recently Audition, which is longlisted for the Booker Prize, and Intimacies, which was named one of the New York Times 10 Best Books of 2021, longlisted for the National Book Award and the PEN/Faulkner Award, and a finalist for a Joyce Carol Oates Prize. She is a recipient of the Rome Prize in Literature, fellowships from the Cullman Center and the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation, and many other honors. Her work has been translated into 21 languages. She teaches in the creative writing program at New York University.

NEWS:

SCANDAL - From Variety:  After more than 3,900 industry figures - including Oscar winners Emma Stone and Joaquin Phoenix - signed a pledge not to work with Israeli film institutions, Paramount released a statement condemning the widespread boycott.  Basically, Paramount says that silencing artists does not promote peace.

BUSINESS - From Deadline:  Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav says the company's split into Warner Bros. (with a new name) and "Discovery Global" will be completed by April 2026.

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  It seems that Warner Bros. has joined Disney in hating on Sling TV for offering its day, week, and weekend programming passes.

MOVIES - From WorldofReel:  Ten years after its bombed at the box office, 2015's "The Last Witch Hunter" is reportedly getting a sequel.  Lionsgate is moving forward with "The Last Witch Hunter 2."  Friends Vin Diesel and Oscar-winner Michael Caine are returning for their respective roles from the first film.  In fact, Caine, at 92, is coming out of retirement for this one.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 9/5 to 9/7/2025 weekend box office is Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Conjuring: Last Rites" with an estimated take of 83 million dollars.

DISNEY - From Variety:  Disney and BBC Studios will release the "Bluey" movie on August 6, 2027.
