VIZ Media Obtains Home Media Rights to Netflix's "Castlevania" Season 1

VIZ MEDIA ANNOUNCES THE ACQUISITION OF GOTHIC FANTASY ANIME SERIES CASTLEVANIA

VIZ Media Acquires Home Media Rights To Season 1 Of The Hit Netflix Animated Series CASTLEVANIA

San Francisco, CA – VIZ Media, LLC (VIZ Media), a premier company in the fields of publishing, animation distribution, and global entertainment licensing, expands its catalog with the acquisition of Season 1 of CASTLEVANIA.

VIZ Media announced the acquisition of CASTLEVANIA during its official panel held this past weekend at Comic-Con International, one of the nation’s biggest annual pop culture conventions. VIZ Media has acquired home media distribution rights to the American anime-influenced series, which is produced by Frederator Studios. CASTLEVANIA Season 1 has streamed to wide acclaim on Netflix.

Inspired by the classic video game series, CASTLEVANIA is a dark medieval fantasy following the last surviving member of the disgraced Belmont clan, trying to save Eastern Europe from extinction at the hand of Vlad Dracula Tepes himself. In Season 1, Trevor Belmont, embittered and excommunicated, finds himself drawn into a battle for the survival of Europe – a region that has brought doom upon itself by taking away the one thing its greatest monster loved.

“We are very excited to announce VIZ Media’s acquisition of the CASTLEVANIA animated series,” says Brian Ige, VIZ Media’s Vice President of Animation. “The series has drawn a wide following and we look forward to giving new and existing fans the opportunity to add this adventure to their personal collections.”

“CASTLEVANIA is one of those unique series that had instant global recognition and popularity. Frederator is proud to have VIZ as one of our special global partners, singularly equipped to reach our fans across the world,” says Fred Seibert, President & CEO of Frederator Networks.

VIZ Media has worked with Frederator Studios and Frederator Networks to license publishing titles based on popular properties from the company’s catalogs including BRAVEST WARRIORS, the acclaimed animated series from Pendleton Ward, the visionary creator of the Emmy Award-winning Cartoon Network show, Adventure Time. VIZ Media also published EASY EATS: A BEE AND PUPPYCAT COOKBOOK, inspired by the hit animated web series, Bee and PuppyCat, which was produced by Frederator Studios and seen widely on Frederator Network's Cartoon Hangover web channel.

DC Comics Announces New WildStorm Title, "Michael Cray"

EXCLUSIVE: WildStorm Expands with Michael Cray
by Tim Beedle

DC’s newest pop-up imprint is readying its Deathblow.

Since his return to comics earlier this year in Warren Ellis and Jon Davis-Hunt’s masterful THE WILD STORM, Michael Cray has been a man without a mission. After failing in his attempt to assassinate HALO mastermind Jacob Marlowe and igniting an international incident in the process, things for the hired gun took a turn for the worse when he discovered that he also had a brain tumor that would most likely take his life.

Or so he thought.

When last we saw Cray, he had been forced out of International Operations, the secret organization that runs the world, when he was approached by Christine Trelane with an offer to join her rival organization. To learn what happens next, fans will have to look to future issues of The Wild Storm along with Cray’s new solo spinoff, which will be landing in stores this fall.

WILDSTORM: MICHAEL CRAY will serve as the second comic series to be released in the WildStorm imprint overseen by Ellis. Written by Bryan Hill with contributions by Ellis and drawn by N. Steven Harris and Dexter Vines, it promises to distill the lofty conspiracies of The Wild Storm through a far more personal lens. And the description of the first issue is both intriguing AND surprising…

Warren Ellis’ critically acclaimed relaunch of WildStorm gets its first solo spinoff series! Michael Cray, professional assassin, has been betrayed by International Operations and has an alien life-form in his head that’s either killing him, transforming him, or both. The only thing that can bring sense to his life is for him to do what he does best: kill the wrong people for the right reasons. But Michael needs support and resources to hit back against I.O., and he gets them in exchange for working with Trelane, taking out her targets, his way. First up? A sociopathic silicon-valley billionaire by the name of Oliver Queen!

Oliver Queen?!? Is the WildStorm imprint about to cross over into the DCU? And it sounds like there’s a lot more to that brain tumor of Cray’s than we realized. Look for the first issue of Wildstorm: Michael Cray on October 11, 2017.

Karnak created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby

“The Flaw in All Things” Part 1

Karnak is a Marvel Comics character that is part of the super-human race known as the Inhumans.  Karnak was created by Stan Lee and Jack Kirby and debuted in Fantastic Four #45 (cover dated: December 1965), the same issue in which the Inhumans first appeared.

Unlike most Inhumans, Karnak was not exposed to the Terrigen Mists.  Because he did not undergo Terrigenesis, he did not develop additional powers like other Inhumans.  A martial artist, Karnak can find the weakness or the flaw in anything (people, ideas, objects, philosophies, structures, and systems).  Using his training and strength, Karnak exploits his talents and can turn a weakness into a weapon.

Marvel Comics is apparently expanding the profile of the Inhumans even more, and that includes launching Inhuman solo titles.  The first one is Karnak, which is written by Warren Ellis; drawn by Gerardo Zaffino; colored by Dan Brown; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.  [Of note:  due to unforeseen circumstances, the art team will change in future issues.]

Karnak #1 (“The Flaw in All Things” Part 1) finds Magister Karnak doing his thing at the Tower of Wisdom.  His thing is interrupted when S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Coulson come calling for his help and whisk him off to a S.H.I.E.L.D. base in the Arctic.

It seems that William and Sarah Roderick have lost their son, Adam.  He recently underwent Terrigenesis and afterwards, was abducted.  The culprit seems to be I.D.I.C. (International Data Integration and Control), an old splinter group of A.I.M. (Advanced Idea Mechanics), thought to be defunct. Now, Karnak, the baddest philosopher since I-don't-know-who, will find Adam and I.D.I.C.

Karnak is another intriguing series from the mind of Warren Ellis, one of most the imaginative and inventive writers of North American and British comic books.  When I first heard that there was going to be a Karnak comic book, I was all like “Puh-lease!”  However, once I learned that Ellis would be the writer, I was intrigued.

I read Ellis' Karnak as an amalgamation of a fixer, special operative, troubleshooter, and martial artist.  He is the Inhuman blunt instrument, called in when no one can get the job done.  I wonder if Karnak will be a pop comic, full of kick-ass and action swag, while offering up something new in terms of ideas, plots, and settings.

Surprisingly, I am as impressed with the art of Gerardo Zaffino and Dan Brown as I am with Ellis' story-script-concept.  Zaffino's compositions are representational in a moody and impressionistic way, but the art makes for kinetic storytelling – as if the narrative is always urging forward.  The colors are alluring; they are like candy, and I think Brown's hues were the elements that kept drawing me deeper into this first issue.

I heartily recommend Karnak.  Readers looking for the really different in the All-New, All-Different Marvel will want to buy this first issue, even if it means mail order or digital.
