Huck: Big Bad World is a new six-issue comic book miniseries created by writer Mark Millar and artist Rafael Albuquerque.  Published by Dark Horse Comics, it is a sequel to the 2015-16 miniseries, Huck.  Both series focus on Huck, an autistic man with extraordinary powers who tries to do one good deed every day.  Colorist Dave McCaig and letterer Clem Robins complete the creative team. 

In Huck Big Bad World, Huck, his mother, Anna Polina Marianna Kozar, and the mysterious Dr. Jack Harper were on a road trip with the goal of finding Harper's lost love, Sophia.  The trio also wanted to find the other secret super-humans who have been hiding around the world.  Now, Huck has found out why so many of these super-persons were smart to be in hiding.

Huck: Big Bad World #6 finds the Lucas Trust celebrating their recent success.  This organization has been searching out people with super powers and neutralizing them for over 20 years.  The organization's “Witch Finders” are on a killing spree, and they have reduced the number of super-persons to a few.

One of the survivors is Huck, but he is now more concerned about his pregnant girlfriend, Zoe Benson, and her son, Micah.  Hiding in the woods most of the other people with remarkable abilities have been murdered, Huck is about to walk into a trap in order to save another super-person.  Can the truth about “the old lady in the forest,” the mysterious figure who has given super-powers to random people around the world, save Huck and his new family?

THE LOWDOWN:  This is the second time that I have been on any kind of list that provides PDF copies of titles published by Dark Horse Comics.  The latest received is Huck: Big Bad World #6.

It should be no surprise that I am telling you again, dear readers, that a Mark Millar comic book is full of breathtaking surprises... because Huck: Big Bad World #6 is filled to the brim with breathtaking surprises, just as I said issue #5 was.  This final issue of the second Huck series offers shocks and revelations, as well as spinning a shocking fate for mankind.  This issue does not really set up a potential third series, but the events depicted in this issue certainly suggest the possibility of a humdinger of a next volume.

The creative team of Millar, Rafael Albuquerque, Dave McCaig, and Clem Robins deliver on the potential of this undeniably super series that issue #1 promised.  Well, dear readers, the Huck: Big Bad Day trade paperback will give you a chance to discover the awesomeness that you missed.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Mark Millar and of the first Huck series will want to try Huck: Big Bad World.

MOVIES - From Variety:  Christopher Nolan says that he shot over two million feet of film during the 91-day shoot for his upcoming film, "The Odyssey," which is due in theaters, July 17, 2026.

STREAMING - From Deadline:  Peacock has decided not to renew its mystery series, "Poker Face," which stars Natasha Lyonne as the sleuth, "Charlie Cale," for a third season.  However, the people behind the series and Lyonne thinks there are many mysteries ahead for Cale to solve.  They have began an effort to shop "Poker Face" to other broadcasters for a two-season commitment.  The surprise is that Emmy-winning actor, Peter Dinklage, would take over the role of Charlie Cale, the sleuth whose superpower is an innate ability to detect liars.

DISNEY - From YouTube:  Pixar has released a teaser trailer for "Toy Story 5."  The film is due June 19, 2026.

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 11/7 to 11/9/2025 weekend box office is 20th Century Studios' "Predator: Badlands" with an estimated 40 million dollars.

GRAMMYS - From People:  The nominees for the 2026 / 68th Annual Grammy Awards have been announced.  Kendrick Lamar leads all nominees with nine nominations.  The winners will be announced at the 68th Grammy Awards ceremony on Sunday, Feb. 1st, 2026 from Los Angeles, which will be broadcast on CBS and streamed on Paramount+.

OBITS:

From THR:  American television writer and producer, Dan McGrath, has died at the age of 61, Friday, November 14, 2025.  He was known for his work on Fox's animated sitcom, "The Simpsons," contributing as a writer and story consultant on from 1992 to 1994 and as a "consulting producer" from 1996-98.  McGrath also worked on NBC's variety series, "Saturday Night Live," and also on other animated series such as "The PJs," "Mission Hill," and "King of the Hill."  McGrath was Primetime Emmy-nominated for his work on "Saturday Night Live" and he shared an Emmy win for "Outstanding Animated Program" for his work on "The Simpsons."

From Deadline:  American film and television actress, Sally Kirkland, has died at the age of 84, Tuesday, November 11, 2025.  She appeared in secondary roles in such films as "The Way We Were" (1973), "The Sting" (1983), and "A Star is Born" (1976).  Kirkland earned a "Best Actress" Oscar nomination for her role in the 1987 comedy-drama, "Anna."  Kirkland also appeared in such TV series as "Kojak," "Three's Company," "Charlie's Angels," "Falcon Crest," "Roseanne," and she had a supporting role on the former NBC daytime soap opera, "Days of Our Lives."  Kirkland was also a producer, associate producer, and executive producer on a number of feature and short films.

From ESPN:  Amierican professional basketball player and coach, Lenny Wilkens, has died at the age of 88, Sunday, November 9, 2025.  Wilkens was an NBA All-Star player with the "St. Louis Hawks" (now "Atlanta Hawks"), "Seattle SuperSonics," and "Cleveland Cavaliers."  In 1979, he lead the SuperSonics to the 1978-79 NBA Championship, after leading the team to the 1977-78 championship series where the loss to eventual champions, the "Washington Bullets."  Wilken was named 1994 "NBA Coach of the Year" while coaching the Atlanta Hawks.  Wilkens is a three-time inductee into the "Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame."  He went in first, as a player (1989), then, as a coach (1998), and finally, as a member (assistant coach) of the 1992 United States Olympic Men's Basketball Team, a.k.a. the "Dream Team" (2010).  As a college basketball player, Wilkens was a two-time All-American (1959 and 1960) at Providence College.

From ESPN:  American attorney and former commissioner of the National Football League (NFL), Paul Tagliabue, has died at the age of 84, Sunday, November 9, 2025.  Tagliabue was commissioner of the NFL from 1989 (succeeding the late Pete Rozelle) until September 1, 2006, 17 of the league's most prosperous years, which saw the league add four expansion franchises during his tenure.  Tagliabue was formally inducted in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio in August 2021, as part of the "Centennial Class of 2020."

MOVIE AWARDS 2025-26:

From THR:  The nominations for the 2025 / 35th Annual Gotham Films Awards have been announced.  Director Paul Thomas Anderson's "One Battle After Another" tops the list of nominees with a record six nominations, including "Best Feature" and "Best Director" for Anderson.  The winners will be announced December 1, 2025.

Review: "THE RUNNING MAN" is Still Running Like it's 1987

The Running Man is a 1987 American dystopian science fiction-action film and black comedy directed by Paul Michael Glaser and starring Arnold Schwarzenegger.  The film is based on the 1982 novel, The Running Man, from author Richard Bachman (a pen name of Stephen King).  The Running Man the movie focuses on a wrongfully convicted policeman who gets a shot a freedom if he participates in television game show where he must avoid death at the hands of professional killers.

The Running Man is set in a world where the United States has become a totalitarian police state following a worldwide economic collapse in the year 2017.  The U.S. government now maintains control of the population through state television propaganda and through sanctioned entertainment such as the TV show, “The Running Man,” the nation's most popular show.  Hosted by the slick-talking Damon Killian (Richard Dawson), “the Running Man” features convicted criminals who are “runners” and who must avoid death at the hands of lethal professional killers known as the “stalkers.”

One of the latest runners is Benjamin A “Ben” Richards (Arnold Schwarzenegger).  He was a police officer, and he was wrongfully accused and convicted for an incident called the “Bakersfield Massacre,” in which Ben allegedly killed 60 men, women, and children during a “food riot.”

Now known as “the Bakersfield Butcher,” Ben is joined by two comrades, Laughlin (Yaphet Kotto) and Weiss (Marvin J. McIntyre), and the trio has three hours to escape to freedom by running through four quadrants.  Standing in their way are such stalkers as “Professor Subzero” (Professor Toru Tanaka), “Dynamo” (Erland van Lidth), and “Fireball” (Jim Brown).  And the stalkers have weapons, while Ben and his fellow “running men” don't.

I remember not liking whatever amount of The Running Man I had seen in the past.  I decided to watch it in its entirety in anticipation of the director Edgar Wright's remake, The Running Man (2025), starring Glen Powell.  I was shocked to find out how much I really enjoyed watching the 1987 film.  Truthfully, The Running Man can still pop its 80s action movie coochie, and it's still running strong.  Also, the extent to which the authoritarian U.S. government in the world of this film goes to maintain control is comical.  In its bid to watch and to control everything and everyone, They inevitably miss something and some people – with comical results.  The Running Man is genuinely a funny black comedy.

There are also a number of things that make The Running Man charming and likable. Before she became a right wing harpie, actress Maria Conchita Alonso, who plays Ben's sidekick (more or less), “Amber Mendez,” hit her peak in the mid to late 1980s.  I find her to be a delight in The Running Man, and her star quality, though short-lived as it turned out to be, is obvious.

The late, great film and television actor, Yaphet Kotto (1939-2021), gave the films and TV series in which he appeared a little more credibility, which he also does in The Running Man as “Laughlin.”  However, actors and pop culture figures, Jesse Ventura and the late NFL legend, Jim Brown (1936-2023), make appearances in this film, in which they are woefully underutilized.

The late actor Richard Dawson (1932 to 2012) was best known for two things.  First, there was his role as con man, safe cracker, and thief, “Corporal Peter Newkirk” in the former CBS sitcom, “Hogan's Heroes” (1965-71).  Next, was his stint hosting the American game show, “Family Feud,” from 1976 to 1981 and again from 1994 to 1995.  Dawson brings the best of those two performances to his role as the host of “The Running Man,” Damon Killian.  It is standout performance mixing the charming rogue that was Corporal Newkirk with the roguish charm Dawson showed on “Family Feud.”

Despite mouthing a basket of deplorable one-liners and quips, Arnold Schwarzenegger is still Arnold Schwarzenegger in The Running Man.  What can I say?  He truly is a real Hollywood movie star and is really a true cinematic icon.  I believe there are other actors who could have played Ben Richards in a contextually different version of The Running Man.  However, in The Running Man that we did get in 1987, only Arnold Schwarzenegger could have saved this film from becoming straight-to-cable, late night trash.  Only Arnold could have made it an 80s action movie that won't go away.

Chapter One: “Stage Spite”

In 1981, actress and model Cassandra Peterson created the “horror hostess character” known as “Elvira.”  Elvira gradually grew in popularity and eventually became a brand name.  As Elvira, Peterson endorsed many products and became a pitch-woman, appearing in numerous television commercials throughout the 1980s.  Elvira first starred in her own comic book back in the mid-1980s.  Beginning with 2018's Elvira Mistress of the Dark #1, Elvira has been the star of numerous comic book series that were written by David Avallone and published by Dynamite Entertainment.

DC Comics villain, Harley Quinn, originated as a character on the animated television series, “Batman: The Animated Series” (FOX Network, 1992).  Created by Paul Dini and Bruce Timm, Harley debuted in the episode “Joker’s Favor” (September 11, 1992), as a female sidekick of The Joker and his eventual accomplice.  Harley made her first comic book appearance in The Batman Adventures #12 (cover dated: September 1993), DC Comics’ comic book spin-off of the animated series.  Harley Quinn became the star of her own DC Comics' ongoing series, beginning in 2000.

Now, Elvira and Harley Quinn unite in the new six-issue miniseries, Harley Quinn x Elvira Volume 1.  It is written by Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti; drawn by Conner and Juan Samu; colored by Conner and Walter Pereya; and lettered by Dave Lanphear.  Official Elvira comic book writer David Avallone is acting as an editorial consultant.  In this new series, Harley Quinn convinces Elvira to unite in throwing the greatest Halloween party Brooklyn has ever seen.

Harley Quinn x Elvira Volume 1 #1 (“Stage Spite”) opens in another one of Harley Quinn's funky dreams.  These dreams are apparently a sign that the “Clown Princess of Crime” is frustrated and needs to do something to get her groove back, according to her partner, “Big Tony.”  But what to do?  When Harley spots a billboard promoting the television program of Elvira, Mistress of the Dark on Station 51Z, Harley has an idea.  All she needs to do is find Elvira.

Meanwhile, Elvira's boss at 51Z, Sidney Spellman, is cleaning house and Elvira loses everything.  Well, Elvira's new friend Harley Quinn has an idea that's just crazy enough to make things better for both of them.  Together, they are going to throw the greatest Halloween party the borough of Brooklyn has ever seen – whether the borough likes it or not.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Harley Quinn x Elvira Volume 1: Issue 1.

I knew what to expect from Amanda Conner and Jimmy Palmiotti as writers of Harley Quinn comic books.  They are among the best Harley Quinn storytellers and have been doing their damn thing with more consistency and longevity than any others.  However, I was not sure how they would be at writing Elvira as a comic book character, especially because David Avallone, the writer of modern Elvira comic books, is so damn good at it.  I must say that I'm pleasantly surprised at Conner and Palmiotti's turn on the character, with their Elvira being a bit more subdued and also droll instead of sporting her usual sterling acerbic and screwball comic book interpretation.

This series' main artist is Elvira comics regular, Juan Samu, although Amanda Conner does draw and color several pages here.  Samu brings life to Conner and Palmiotti's script, creating a candy-coated confection of madness with a slight touch of the macabre.  Colorist Walter Pereya drops a castle's worth of Neapolitan ice cream over Samu's art that turns this story into a dessert bar for the eyes.  Dave Lanphear's lettering is the final flourish that makes this story feel like static electricity dancing across the pages.

Honestly, I didn't expect much from Harley Quinn x Elvira Volume 1, mainly because I have been underwhelmed by previous Harley Quinn team-ups.  But it was time for me to get to this debut issue as the second issue approaches.  So should you, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Elvira and of Harley Quinn comic books will want to read Harley Quinn x Elvira Volume 1.
