NEWS:

TELEVISION - From Deadline:  ABC has announced the premiere dates for its Fall 2025 television season.  That includes a 8PM Eastern arrival for the flagship "9-1-1," and a 9 PM Eastern debut for its latest spinoff, "9-1-1 Nashville."

TELEVISION - From Variety:  Talk show host Stephen Colbert announced that CBS is cancelling "The Late Show with Stephen Colbert," with the last episode scheduled for May 2026.  He also announced that CBS is ending "The Late Show" and won't replace it. Colbert has been hosting the show since 2015.

NETFLIX/ANIMATION - From Deadline:  Netflix has produced a red-band trailer for "Fixed," the R-rated animated comedy film from director Genndy Tartakovsy ("Hotel Transylvania").  The film is about a randy dog named "Bull," who is about to get neutered.

EMMYS - From Deadline:  The nominations of the 2025 / 77th Primetime Emmy Awards have been announced. The winners in 25 categories will be announced September 14, 2025, airing live on CBS and Paramount+.  The corresponding Creative Arts Emmy winners will be announced during a two-night ceremony of September 6th and 7th, 2025.  Apple TV+'s "Severance" led with 27 nominations.

From Variety:  Days after celebrating his 83rd birthday, Harrison Ford, earns his first Primetime Emmy nomination, which is in the category "Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series."  He is the second oldest nominee in that category after the late Adam Arkin earned a nomination in 2020 at the age of 86.

TELEVISION - From Variety:  HBO has provided a first-look of Nick Frost as "Rubeus Hagrid" in its upcoming "Harry Potter" television series.

MOVIES - From Deadline:   Blumhouse has laid off six staffers across film, television, and casting in the wake of the box office disappointment of its most recent film, "M3GAN 2.0."

BOX OFFICE - From BoxOfficePro:  The winner of the 7/11 to 7/13/2025 weekend box office is Warner Bros. Picture/DC Studios' Superman with an estimated take of 122 million dollars.

From Deadline:  Warner Bros Discovery CEO David Zaslav celebrates a box office win with Superman saying that his is just the beginning for the "DC Universe."

STREAMING/ANIMATION - From Deadline:  "South Park" and Paramount+ are involved in negotiations involving the rights to stream the series. That has led to the long-running animated series being removed from the international version of Paramount+.

OBITS:

From Deadline:  American songwriter, Alan Bergman, had died at the age of 99, Thursday, July 18, 2025.  Bergman was best known for his collaboration with his late wife, Marilyn Keith Bergman (1928-2022).  The couple won three Oscars for the film music, including twice for "Best Original Song."  The won two Grammy Awards, including "Song of the Year" (for "The Way We Were" with songwriter Marvin Hamlisch).  The couple also wrote the theme songs for the television series, "The Sandy Duncan Show," and two former CBS sitcoms, "Maude" (1972-78), and its spinoff, "Good Times" (1974-79).

From Deadline:  British television actress, Judy Loe, has died at the age of 78, Tuesday, July 15, 2025.  Loe was a regular in such British TV series as "Ace of Wands," "Edward the Seventh," and "General Hospital" (not related to the American soap opera), to name a few.  She was a guest in such series "Man at the Top," "Ripping Yarns," and "Inspector Morse," to name a few.  Loe was also the mother of actress, Kate Beckinsale, best known for her role in the "Underworld" film franchise.

“Complications”

Marvel has relaunched its flagship Star Wars comic books series.  This new series will offer stories set after the events depicted in the third film in the original Star Wars trilogy, Return of the Jedi (1983).  This new Star Wars comic book is written by Alex Segura; drawn and colored by Phil Noto; and lettered by Clayton Cowles.

Star Wars finds the New Republic in a race to find allies in the Fenril Sector, all the while struggling with the Nagai.  Luke Skywalker, Leia Organa, and Han Solo are each involved in a different aspect of this mission, which involves pirate raids on New Republic ships, diplomatic intrigue, and gangsters.  All of this will ultimately connect to the conspiracy behind the New Republic struggles.

Star Wars #3 (“Complications”) opens at Cloud City, on the gas planet, Bespin (first seen in The Empire Strikes Back).  A ship has just crashed on landing dock, “East Two-Eleven.”  The pilot, named “Garlev,” is barely alive, and he is asking for an old partner-in-crime, Lando Calrissian.  This forces Lando to call on Han Solo, who has his hands full with bounty hunter Beilert Valance as a partner in an investigation of the Zantarrk gang.

Garlev says that he has important information for the New Republic, and he will only reveal it when Lando and Han are together.  This brings up the past and the long friendship of Han, Chewbecca, and Lando, and a time when they put their trust in Garlev.

Meanwhile, Luke Skywalker reunites with pilot Rynn Zenat.  Plus, old foes make a shocking return.

THE LOWDOWN:  I do not receive PDF or physical review copies of any titles published by Marvel.  I bought this new Star Wars comic book via Amazon Kindle slash comiXology, but it is not the first Star Wars comic book that I have read or reviewed.

After two issues of introducing the scenarios and situations, writer Alex Segura begins to settle into the thick of the conspiracy that plagues our favorite Star Wars heroes.  I'm here for it simply because Segura's dialogue makes me race through this comic book, hungry for more information; it is all concise and engaging.  Segura is making me eagerly await each issue of a Star Wars comic book in a way I have not done in decades, back in the days of that other senile President of the United States.

Phil Noto's storytelling is a potboiler of space opera intrigue.  Noto delivers all the goods of Segura's script with engaging storytelling and with a visual aesthetic that is true Star Wars.  Lettering can strike the right tone for comic book art, and Clayton Cowles' lettering does that for Noto's work.

Dear readers, I feel like Segura-Noto's Star Wars is the antidote for people who are always claiming that they want Star Wars entertainment that is true to classic Star Wars.  If you are one of those complainers and you are not reading this new Star Wars comic book, you're triflin'.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Star Wars comic books will want to read the 2025 Star Wars comic book series.

Uchuu Kenetsukan is a five-volume sci-fi, mecha, and action manga written and drawn by Ryu-ichi Sadamatsu.  It was serialized over 39 chapters in the online platform, LINE Manga, from 2020 to 2023.  Titan Manga is publishing an English-language edition of Uchuu Kenetsukan as a paperback graphic novel series under the title, Cosmic Censorship.  The first volume debuted July 1, 2025.

Cosmic Censorship Vol. 1 (Chapters 1 to 8, and “Intermission”) opens in the year 2019.  It introduces Maki Makino, a high school student and former track and field club member.  She was once a track star in middle school, but a horrible leg injury ended that.

One day, Maki meets a mysterious man wearing sunglasses on her way to school.  He saves her life, but he starts acting like a stalker.  His name may be “Roger Penrose,” or is that the name Maki gave him?  He is apparently a part-time janitor at her high school... and something called a “cosmic censor” – whatever that is!  What Maki does not know is that this encounter connects to her past and future.  Maki is going to die soon.. or is she?  The future cannot be changed!  Or can it?  And now, Maki has to learn to navigate new powers...

THE LOWDOWN:  Since October 2023, Titan Manga has provided me with print and PDF copies of their manga publications for review.  One of the latest is Cosmic Censorship Volume 1.

I came across a description of Cosmic Censorship as being in the same vein as the classic mecha Japanese media franchise, Neon Genesis Evangelion.  I have to admit that I have never watched the anime, but I did read several volumes of the manga.  I suggest the Neon Genesis Evangelion 3-in-1 Edition Volume 1 as a good way to start on the manga version.

Cosmic Censorship Graphic Novel Volume 1 does indeed offer some mecha fun and alien monsters, but this first volume is more fight comic than anything else.  That is not a bad thing.  The duels and battles here had me flipping through the pages to see more.  That is because the beautiful it yields bracing, fast-paced, engaging storytelling.

For all its kinetic energy, however, this series is lightly humorous and teases a “boy meets girls” relationship, with a macabre spin, of course.  Maki and Roger have the potential to be a couple that really captures the reader's interest because she is so inquisitive and he is so determined to protect her from the disasters that her nature may bring.

Cosmic Censorship's sense of mystery also draws me deeper into the series.  I am already curious about the next volume, and I am ready to see what befalls Maki and Roger next.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of mecha manga and of science fiction-action manga will want to try Cosmic Censorship.
