Crimes of the Future is a 2022 Canadian science fiction film from writer-director David Cronenberg.  The film focuses on a performances artist who showcases the metamorphosis of his internal organs with the help of his partner who performs surgery on him during the performance.

Crimes of the Future opens sometime in the future when humanity has experienced a number of biological changes and evolutionary changes to human physiology.  The film introduces Saul Tenser (Viggo Mortensen) and Caprice (Lea Seydoux), a performance artist couple.  Saul's body is afflicted by “accelerated evolution syndrome,” which forces his body to constantly develop new vestigial organs.  Tenser is in constant pain, and he relies biomechanical devices in order to sleep and to eat.  Using a “Sark autopsy module,” Caprice performs surgery on Saul before an audience as an act of performance art, performances which have made the duo world renown.

Saul and Caprice's performances have started to draw official, governmental, and law enforcement interest.  They meet Wippet (Don McKellar) and Timlin (Kristen Stewart), the two bureaucrats in charge of the “National Organ Registry,” which catalogs and stores newly developed and evolved organs.

Not everyone is excited about “body-growth” and consider it a “body-crime.”  Cope (Welket Bungué), a detective with the “New Vice Unit,” a governmental police agency, wants Tenser to infiltrate the worlds of evolutionists, the people that want to accept and encourage “accelerated evolution syndrome.”  After he meets Lang Dotrice (Scott Speedman), a grieving father, Saul goes so deep into the world of this new human evolution that he might discover something about himself.

Some consider Crimes of the Future to be both a science fiction and horror film, but I consider it to be only a science fiction film.  However, I do recognize how much the film travels into the realms of the genre of “body horror.”  In that, Crimes of the Future does share many similarities with David Cronenberg's last science fiction-horror film, eXistenZ (1999).  Both are set in a world where biotechnology invents new machines that can directly interface with human bodies and control those bodies.  In both films, public performances of man-machine interfaces are both popular and controversial, and a diverse group of entities:  law enforcement, fetishists, secretive agencies, rebels, dissidents, and subcultures seek to control the future and future-tech.

In Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg presents a world in which the evolutionary change is spurred on by technology and other man-made efforts.  Once this new evolution starts, it is free to do as it pleases, outside the considerations of humanity.  As in many of his films, a lead character, group of characters, and/or society and the world at large struggle to adapt to that change.  To one extent or another, they are against it, afraid of it, and some ultimately, even if reluctantly, embrace that change.

Two things hold this film together, David Cronenberg's vision and his muse, actor Viggo Mortensen as Saul Tenser.  Cronenberg and his collaborators have created a world in which biotechnological and evolutionary changes take place in drab and rundown settings.  In Crimes of the Future, Cronenberg does not need flying cars and off-world colonies in order to communicate to his audience that the world and mankind are in a future undergoing radical transformation.  True to his ways, Cronenberg is both provocative and exploitative and visionary and elegant as he executes a story of a world in which evolution forces humanity to live in the world it made.

Crimes of the Future has a number of eccentric performances.  Lea Seydoux makes Caprice grow … and evolve, and Kristen Stewart is impish and mysterious as Timlin.  However, Viggo Mortensen is both the center of this film's narrative and the outer boundaries of its ideas and ambitions.  He holds it together both as one afflicted by evolution and as an explorer of the world of evolution and new humans.  Mortensen's gift is to make people buy into the idea that he is indeed the character he plays and that what he does as that character is authentic and not a contrivance of a really talented actor.

Once again, David Cronenberg offers a film that examines horrifying change, and he does it without nostalgia and sentiment, but with a superb score by the great Howard Shore.  Yeah, Cronenberg is a genius, and Crimes of the Future is his latest masterpiece.  The ending, which feels like a quick wrap-up, is the only reason I won't call this film perfect, but it would be a crime of the present for me to quibble about that.

“The Knight's Tale”

Red Sonja is female high fantasy and sword and sorcery hero.  She first appeared in Conan the Barbarian #23 (cover dated February 1973) and was created by writer Roy Thomas and artist Barry Windsor-Smith.  Red Sonja was loosely based on “Red Sonya of Rogatino,” a female character that appeared in the 1934 short story, “The Shadow of the Vulture,” written by Conan the Cimmerian's creator, Robert E. Howard.

In 2005, Dynamite Entertainment began publishing comic books featuring differing versions of the character.  The latest is Immortal Red Sonja.  It is written by Dan Abnett; drawn by Emiliana Pinna or Alessandro Miracolo or Luca Colandrea; colored by Ellie Wright; and lettered by Jeff Eckleberry.  The series is set in the Britain of legend and finds Red Sonja (“Sonja the Red”) in possession of two cursed items – a soul-possessed chain mail and an accursed blade (“Gwynbur”). Neither will let her go until she helps restore the fallen, lost kingdom of “Logres,” and its mighty rulers, the Paindragons.

Immortal Red Sonja #5 (“The Knight's Tale”) opens as Sonja battles cave-dwelling wights.  She has to, for she and her male companion must go deeper into the cave in order to find the “Abyssal Spring.”  According to her chain mail, the spring's waters will restore the memories of this man who was once Lanzlot Lak, one of the High Paindragon's greatest warrior.

Now, Red Sonja can be free of her curse, but there is always a complication...  And Sonja the Red might not like her end of the deal.

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, Dynamite Entertainment's marketing department has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Immortal Red Sonja #5, which is one of many, many Dynamite Red Sonja comic books that I have read.

Immortal Red Sonja is Dan Abnett's spin on the Arthurian legend, with Red Sonja being the spin.  Although each issue of this series is connected to the others, obviously, Abnett deftly composes each one so that it can act as a standalone story, a kind of fairy tale within the larger tale.  Thus, the reader can read one issue and not feel obligated to (or stuck with) reading the next issue.  Of course, Immortal Red Sonja is so good that...

The art team of artist Luca Colandrea and colorist Ellie Wright bring this story to life.  Colandrea's big panels and smooth action thrill without losing the sense of fantasy here.  As a special treat, Wrights colors accentuate the Sonja boob show Colandrea offers readers in this fifth issue.

So, yeah, you want to try this Red Sonja spin-off title, dear readers.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Red Sonja comic books must read Immortal Red Sonja.

Comics Review: The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising #2

THE ARMY OF DARKNESS VS. REANIMATOR: NECRONOMICON RISING, VOL. 1 #2

ART: Eman Cassallos
COLORS: Jorge Sutil

EDITOR: Joe Rybandt
COVER: Tony Fleecs

Army of Darkness is a 1992 comic horror film and the third film in the Evil Dead film franchise.  The film focuses on the series' lead character, Ash Williams (portrayed by actor Bruce Campbell), as he is trapped in the Middle Ages and battling an army of undead warriors.

“Herbert West–Reanimator” is a horror short story written by H. P. Lovecraft and first published in 1922.  The story was the basis of the 1985 horror film, Re-Animator, which spawned sequel films and other media adaptations of the Lovecraft source material.

Dynamite Entertainment currently produces comic books based on the Army of Darkness film, featuring Ash as the main character and comics based on Herbert West.  The two franchises sometime come together in a comic book miniseries.  The latest is The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising, Volume 1.  It is written by Erik Burnham; drawn by Eman Cassallos; colored by Jorge Sutil; and lettered by Troy Peteri.  Necronomicon Rising focuses on a battle for the most notorious book of the dead between Ash Williams and Herbert West, the Reanimator.

As The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising, Volume 1 #2 opens, Herbert and Bad Ash have teamed up for a visit to the creepy mansion of one Mr. Dupon.  He has the Necronomicon ex Mortis.  So will Bad Ash tell Herbert why he really needs this book?

Meanwhile, (good) Ash Williams and Constance Wyrdie head to Massachusetts, where Ash, the “Chosen One,” will learn what he is supposed to do as the chosen.  The deadites, however, have other plans for the Chosen One.  And everyone needs to watch out for the portal!

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, the marketing department at Dynamite Entertainment has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising, Volume 1 #2, which is the second Reanimator comic book and the latest AoD title that I have read.

The first issue of Necronomicon Rising #1 offered the potential for some fun, and this second issue lives up to that.  A good writer can have fun with Ash Williams and the world of The Army of Darkness and Erik Burnham does.  This series is crazy and nonsensical, with just enough of a plot so that some of it make sense … in a sense.

The art team of illustrator Eman Cassallos and colorist Jorge Sutil strike just the right tone – a mix of humor and mayhem.  Troy Peteri's letters are right behind that keeping up the crazy rhythm.  I was willing to give The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising a chance.  I hoped for the best and I'm getting something surprisingly good.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of The Army of Darkness and/or Reanimator comic books will want to read The Army of Darkness vs. Reanimator: Necronomicon Rising, Volume 1.

Comics Review: LADY HEL Volume 1 #1

LADY HEL, VOL. 1 #1
DYNAMITE ENTERTAINMENT

STORY: Erik Burnham
ART: Zhengis Tasbolatov
COLORS: Salvatore Aiala
LETTERS: Dave Sharpe
EDITOR: Matt Idelson
COVER: Lucio Parrillo
32pp, Color, $3.99 U.S. (August 2022)

Lady Hel was a character originally known as “Mistress Hel,” that was first created to take the place of classic Chaos Comics' character, Lady Death, in Dynamite Entertainment's CHAOS! Universe.  Mistress Hel was created by Tim Seeley, and she debuted in Dynamite's Chaos! #1 (May 2014).

Lady Hel returns in a new comic book series, Lady Hel Volume 1.  It is written by Erik Burnham; drawn by Zhengis Tasbolatov; colored by Salvatore Aiala; and lettered by Dave Sharpe.  The new series tracks the title character's bid to regain her throne, although she has much less power than she once had.

Lady Hel Volume 1 #1 opens in Tartarus, a realm of the dead – because if there is a multiverse of universes, then, there is a multiverse of realms of the dead?...  Lady Hel, the personification of death and the absolute ruler of Helheim, ruled in... Helheim, but she finds herself in someplace else.  Now, Lady Hal finds herself going against Persephone, hostess of the damned and embodiment of death.  But first, there are questions.  For instance, why is Persephone expecting her?

THE LOWDOWN:  Since July 2021, the marketing department at Dynamite Entertainment has been providing me with PDF review copies of some of their titles.  One of them is Lady Hel Volume 1 #1, the first Lady Hel comic book I have read

Lady Hel #1 may be the first Dynamite Entertainment first issue that does not interest me.  It is not a bad comic book, but writer Erik Burnham's script makes me believe that the comic book really begins with the second issue.  Fans of Dynamite's Chaos! bad girls will want to check this out, however.

I READS YOU RECOMMENDS:  Fans of Purgatori will want to read Lady Hel, Volume 1.
