First given out in 1975, the César Award is the national film award of France. Some even think of the César Award as the French equivalent of the American Academy Awards (Oscars). The nominations are selected by the members of the Académie des Arts et Techniques du Cinéma, and the award ceremony is held in Paris each February. The name of the award comes from the late sculptor César Baldaccini, and the trophies are actual sculptures of the artist.
The nominations for the 39th Cesar Awards were announced Friday, January 31, 2014.
The 39th Cesar Awards will be presented on Friday, February 28, 2014 in Paris, just two days before the Oscars at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles. Cesar-winning actor, Francois Cluzet (The Intouchables), will host the ceremony at the Chatelet Theater, with fellow Cesar-winner, Cecile de France (Hereafter), serving as mistress of ceremonies.
An honorary Cesar is traditionally handed out to a foreign actor for their body of work. Kevin Costner received the prize in 2013. This year’s honoree is Scarlett Johansson.

“The Lego® Movie” Assembles More Than $200 Million in Global Box Office
BURBANK, Calif.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Audiences are connecting with “The LEGO® Movie” in a big way, driving the first-ever full-length theatrical LEGO adventure past $200 million in worldwide box office, less than two weeks after its record-breaking release. The announcement was made today by Dan Fellman, President of Domestic Distribution, and Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, President of International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
“The LEGO Movie,” from Warner Bros. Pictures, Village Roadshow Pictures and LEGO System A/S, made its North American debut on Friday, February 7. It took in an opening weekend gross of $69.1 million, making it the largest February opening for any animated film and the largest opening for an animated Warner Bros. release. It has since gone on to earn a total of $146.3 million at the domestic box office, and still building.
The film has also launched its international engagements in a number of European, Asian, and Latin American markets, including the UK, Spain, Scandinavia, Hong Kong, Korea, Brazil and Mexico, earning $60.4 million to date, for a combined worldwide box office total of $206.7 million, and climbing.
Many major territories have yet to open, including Germany, Russia, France, Italy, Australia and Japan.

Review: "Riddick" Goes Back to Basics

Riddick is a 2013 British-American science fiction and action-thriller film from writer-director David Twohy. Starring Vin Diesel in the title role, this film is a sequel to the 2004 science fiction film, The Chronicles of Riddick, and is also the third feature film in The Chronicles of Riddick film franchise that began with 2000’s Pitch Black. In the new film, Riddick finds himself left for dead on a desolate planet and facing off against two bands of mercenaries and the planet’s predatory inhabitants.
Riddick takes place five years after the events of the movie, The Chronicles of Riddick. The universe’s most dangerous man, Richard B. Riddick (Vin Diesel), awakens on an unnamed, sun-scorched planet and finds himself severely injured. He realizes that he must go “back to zero” and awaken the savage inside himself. Eventually, Riddick discovers that although he has survived the planet’s harsh environment and native predators, he must still find a way off this world.
Riddick activates an emergency beacon at an abandoned mercenary station. Two ships promptly answer the beacon. The first carries a band of grungy mercenaries led by the violent and erratic, Santana (Jordi Molla). The second group of mercenaries is more professional and better equipped, but they are led by Boss John (Matt Nable), a man who has a connection to Riddick’s past. As the two groups fight to see which will capture Riddick, they are unaware of something that may be more dangerous than Riddick.
Riddick isn’t by any means a great movie, but, just like The Chronicles of Riddick, it is a rather entertaining movie. Riddick is very much the work of talented artists, craftsman, and photographers and CGI artists. Their best work is revealed in the long-distance views of the planet’s sun-scorched landscapes and turbulent sky.
However, director David Twohy and his star, Vin Diesel, don’t leave everything up to the techs and artisans. They go back to the basics, delivering a tense, brooding thriller that borrows heavily from the first film, Pitch Black, which is basically a template for this new movie. Riddick recaptures the stripped-down, indie-style science fiction that was the first film, while jettisoning the opulent sci-fi mode of the second film. If you like Pitch Black, you may like Riddick.
I wish the screenplay developed the characters better than it does. The Boss John subplot is wasted. There is potential for real conflict between Riddick, John, and the other mercs, but the other characters are mostly cannon fodder or are simply in the film to make Riddick look like such a stallion among nags.
Say what you will about his acting (and there may be little to say), Diesel, as a movie star, is a steed and a charger and a stallion, and his personality is a large object, large enough to cast a shadow over his co-stars. That can keep other characters from showing their best side. But what the hell – Riddick is back, and that’s more than good enough for me.

2014 Make-Up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild Award Winners

The 2014 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards were held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the historic Paramount Theater on the Paramount Studios lot. Winners received “The Artisan” award (a statuette) for both outstanding makeup and hair styling achievements. Two special Lifetime Achievement Awards and a Distinguished Artisan award were also presented.
Academy Award-winning Make-Up Artist Dick Smith (Amadeus) received the “Make-Up Artists Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2014 MUAHS. Academy Award-winner Rick Baker, who was Smith’s apprentice, presented the award.
Academy Award-winning Hair Stylist Gail Ryan received the “Hair Stylists Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2014 MUAHS. Academy Award-winning actor Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) presented the award to Ryan. Ryan won an Oscar for her work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas (with make-up artist Rick Baker).
Johnny Depp received the “Distinguished Artisan Award.” The Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild explained the honor in the following statement:

The 2014 Make-Up Artists & Hair Stylists Guild Awards were held Saturday, February 15, 2014 at the historic Paramount Theater on the Paramount Studios lot. Winners received “The Artisan” award (a statuette) for both outstanding makeup and hair styling achievements. Two special Lifetime Achievement Awards and a Distinguished Artisan award were also presented.
Academy Award-winning Make-Up Artist Dick Smith (Amadeus) received the “Make-Up Artists Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2014 MUAHS. Academy Award-winner Rick Baker, who was Smith’s apprentice, presented the award.
Academy Award-winning Hair Stylist Gail Ryan received the “Hair Stylists Lifetime Achievement Award” at the 2014 MUAHS. Academy Award-winning actor Benicio Del Toro (Traffic) presented the award to Ryan. Ryan won an Oscar for her work on How the Grinch Stole Christmas (with make-up artist Rick Baker).
Johnny Depp received the “Distinguished Artisan Award.” The Make-up Artists and Hair Stylists Guild explained the honor in the following statement:
"Johnny Depp is one of the most prominent and talented actors working today. The award-winning characters he consistently brings to life through film are uniquely enhanced with make-up and hair stylist artistry. Beginning with Tim Burton’s Edward Scissorhands in 1990, Depp repeatedly creates indelible characterizations, making it hard to imagine any other actor in these roles. His iconic performances in Sleepy Hollow, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland; and, of course, the continuing Pirates of the Caribbean series, are among the 50 plus roles he has played, which have been brought to life in partnership with his gifted make-up artists and hair stylists."

"12 Years a Slave" Wins "Best Film"
The British equivalent of the Oscars is the EE British Academy Film Awards (also known as the BAFTAs). The 67th British Academy Film Awards took place on Sunday, February 16, 2014 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London. The ceremony was hosted by Stephen Fry and broadcast exclusively on BBC One and BBC One HD.
Gravity was the leading winner with 6 awards, including “Best Director” (Alfonso Cuarón) and “Best British Film” (a designation that was and still is controversial in some circles). American Hustle won three prizes, including “Best Supporting Actress” for Jennifer Lawrence.
According to what I’ve read, the night wore on, and 12 Years a Slave was not winning in categories it was expected win (adapted screenplay, supporting actress, and even supporting actor). Some thought that the film would not win any awards, but towards the end of the show, the film picked up the big wins. First, there was “Best Actor” for Chiwetel Ejiofor. Then, when it seemed like Gravity and maybe American Hustle would win “Best Film,” 12 Years a Slave escaped with the trophy (going to producers Anthony Katagas, Brad Pitt, Dede Gardner, Jeremy Kleiner, and Steve McQueen.
In the non-competitive awards, director Peter Greenaway was honored with “Outstanding British Contribution to Cinema” and Helen Mirren won “The Fellowship,” the highest honor the Academy can bestow.

Review: "Kick-Ass 2" Kicks Better Ass

Kick-Ass 2 is a 2013 British-American superhero film and crime comedy from writer-director, Jeff Wadlow. It is based upon two comic books, Kick-Ass 2 and Hit Girl, from writer Mark Millar (the creator of Wanted) and John Romita, Jr. Kick-Ass 2 is also a sequel to the 2010 film, Kick Ass, which was also based on a Millar-Romita, Jr. comic book of the same name. In Kick-Ass 2 the movie, high-school superhero Kick-Ass joins a group of costumed crime-fighters who were inspired by him, while an old enemy plots revenge against him.
After the events of the first film, high school student Dave Lizewski (Aaron Johnson) retired from fighting crime as the costumed vigilante/superhero, “Kick-Ass.” But now, he is bored, and begins training with Mindy Macready a/k/a Hit Girl (Chloë Grace Moretz), who is now 15-years-old. However, Mindy’s guardian is her late father’s friend, Detective Marcus Williams (Morris Chestnut), and he demands that Mindy give up being Hit Girl and become a proper high school student.
With Hit Girl taken out of action, Dave looks for a new partner and finds a group of normal citizens who were inspired by Kick-Ass to fight crime in costume. Led by Colonel Stars and Stripes (Jim Carrey), Kick-Ass and a small band of wannabe superheroes fight crime and do charity work.
Meanwhile, Chris D’Amico (Christopher Mintz-Plasse), whose crime boss father was killed by Kick-Ass, is frustrated that his mother forced him to stop being the costumed Red Mist. After he takes control of his family’s wealthy, Chris becomes what he calls the world’s first supervillain, The Motherfucker, and swears vengeance against Kick-Ass.
I thought that the first Kick Ass movie wasn’t as deranged as it thought it was, nor was it as entertaining as its source material. Kick-Ass 2 is as deranged as it thinks it is – perhaps even more so. Sometimes, it is too deranged – with violence that is off-putting. It is not that the violence is over-the-top, so much that it seems like the filmmakers almost seemed obsessed with spiting the critics, prudes, and people who cannot accept that this is make-believe and has nothing to do with real-world violence (like Newtown).
I think I find Kick-Ass 2 more entertaining than the first movie because the new film has one main plot. The first movie was kind of all over the place, which is understandable as it was introducing a new kind of superhero concept. Kick-Ass 2 is about revenge. Yes, the story has subplots about teen angst and self-doubt, parental-child conflict, and peer acceptance, but this is a movie about payback and the mindset one has to have in order to engage in revenge.
I thought Hit Girl dominated the first movie, thankfully. This time, Dave Lizewski and Chris D’Amico are just as fun to watch as Mindy Macready, although I honestly wish that Kick-Ass 2 has a few more hits of Hit Girl. Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloë Grace Moretz, and Christopher Mintz-Plasse deliver excellent performances that make their characters’ respective conflicts, obstacles, and goals seem quite genuine.
I can’t say exactly what, but Kick-Ass 2 seems to be missing something. I like the movie and had a blast watching some of it, but there were moments that I found only mildly amusing and entertaining. I guess that should be enough. I can say that Kick-Ass 2 has the wanton violence, foul language, and sexual content of the first film, but done a little more thoughtfully. Plus, Jim Carrey’s turn in a small role is an amazing little thing that has to be seen.

Review: "Cry_Wolf" Worthy of Attention

The subject of this movie review is Cry_Wolf, a 2005 horror film and murder mystery from the team of Jeff Wadlow and Beau Bauman. The film focuses on eight high school seniors at a posh boarding school whose lies catch up with them after they create a fake serial killer prank.
Tossed out of his old school, Owen Matthews (Julian Morris) arrives at prestigious Westlake Prep where he falls in with the school’s unofficial and self-appointed “liar’s club.” Playing on the fear caused by a young woman recently found murdered in the woods, the friends decide to expand the reach of their game beyond campus.
They create an online rumor that the girl’s slaying is just the latest in a long line of killings by a serial killer known as “The Wolf.” Owen and Dodger (Lindy Booth), a female student that he likes, even create an M.O. for The Wolf and describe the kind of victims he prefers to murder after his initial kill, in this case, the girl he supposedly murdered in the nearby woods. However, the club bases the victims on the people they know – each other.
After journalism teacher Rich Walker (Jon Bon Jovi) admonishes him about the dangers of online predators and spreading fear on the Internet, Owen regrets personally sending the initial Wolf rumor into cyberspace. Worse still, someone calling himself “The Wolf” starts sending Owen threats via email and one of the liar’s club turns up missing. Owen and his friends don’t know where their lies end and the truth begins. However, campus officials consider the eight friends to be troublemakers, with Owen the ringleader and the one destined for expulsion. So when the gang cries for help, everyone else views the distress as another hoax perpetrated by bad youths. Nobody believes a liar, even when they’re telling the truth – perhaps, the real Wolf is stalking them.
Co-writer/producer Beau Bauman and co-writer/director Jeff Wadlow’s offbeat horror flick, Cry_Wolf, creates a novel twist on slasher films. The atmosphere is good – occasionally creepy and will sometimes put you on the edge of your seat. A quirky suspense thriller, Cry_Wolf has so many interesting twists and turns, quiet a few of which would make sense in the real world.
The film’s major problem is, of course, Bauman and Wadlow’s script. They try something different and their concept is good. One thing that works is the dialogue and interpersonal dynamics between the high school age characters; it’s sharp, witty, blistering, and dead-on. However, the tense relationship between Owen and his father (played by Gary Cole with a bad English accent) is treated like stock footage.
The script’s big slip up is on the characters themselves, all of which come across as limp or wispy. Some, like Owen and Dodger, are very interesting, but the screenplay is so focused on genre trappings and putting a unique spin on said genre that it doesn’t have time for the kind of rich character play Owen and Dodger both need and deserve. The rest of the participants are intriguing, but are ultimately (or technically, as it turns out) just body count fodder.
That makes Cry_Wolf like so many other scary movies, soft on script even when the story concept is exciting. Still, there is something to be said for trying something new. At the end of the day, Cry_Wolf says that there is something scarier that the unknown killer in the dark. It’s the people we think we know, people with something to hide and scores to settle for the wrongs they think their friends, colleagues, and associates have done them. How far they willing to go and whom they’re willing to manipulate to balance the accounts can chill to the bones.

“The Moon Song,” with music by Karen O and lyric by Karen O and Spike Jonze, was written for the film “Her,” directed by Jonze. The three other nominated songs are “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Karen O is the lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which has released four albums, three of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards®. “The Moon Song,” with music by Karen O and lyric by Karen O and Spike Jonze, was written for the film “Her,” directed by Jonze. The three other nominated songs are “Happy” from “Despicable Me 2,” “Let It Go” from “Frozen” and “Ordinary Love” from “Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.”
Karen O is the lead singer of the band Yeah Yeah Yeahs, which has released four albums, three of which have been nominated for Grammy Awards®. She previously co-wrote original songs for the soundtrack of Jonze’s 2009 film “Where the Wild Things Are,” receiving a Grammy nomination for the featured song “All Is Love.” Karen O has performed on numerous other soundtracks, including those for “Frankenweenie” “The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo” and “I’m Not There”.

"12 Years a Slave" Has Record Night at Black Reel Awards

The evening of Thursday, February 13, 2014 in the Nation’s Capital (Washington D.C., for some of you), the 14th Annual Black Reel Awards ceremony took place. The Black Reel Awards handed out their prizes for the finest accomplishments and achievements of African-Americans and people of the African Diaspora in feature and independent films and television in 2013.
The runaway winner of the night was 12 Years a Slave. Directed by Steve McQueen, the film is a harrowing story of a free black man who is kidnapped from his Northern home and family and forced into more than a decade of slavery. The film won 8 awards, besting previous record-holder, Precious, which won 7 Black Reel Awards out of 10 nominations at the 2010 awards.

X-Men Screenwriter Directs Werewolf Action-Thriller, "Wolves"

Ketchup Entertainment today announced the acquisition of U.S. rights to WOLVES, the directorial debut of screenwriter David Hayter (X-Men, X2, Watchmen). The werewolf action-thriller, written by Hayter, stars Lucas Till (X-Men: First Class), Stephen McHattie (Immortals, Watchmen) and Jason Momoa (Game of Thrones, Conan the Barbarian). The film is produced by Copperheart Entertainment’s Steve Hoban (Splice, Ginger Snaps), with makeup effects by Oscar-winning creature designers Dave Elsey and Lou Elsey (The Wolfman, X-Men: First Class).
WOLVES follows the story of Cayden Richards (Till) - a handsome eighteen year-old with a dark secret. Forced to hit the road after the brutal murder of his parents, Cayden finds himself turning into a savage wolf and is thrust between two warring clans of werewolves fighting for control of the ominous town of Lupine Ridge.

Coupled with the new and expanded facilities, the company has hired key talent to staff the offices. ILM president and general manager, Lynwen Brennan, made the announcement.

BEVERLY HILLS, CA — Tony Award®-winning singer, songwriter and actress Idina Menzel will, for the first time, perform the Oscar®-nominated song “Let It Go” for a global television audience at the Oscars®, show producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron announced today. The Oscars, hosted by Ellen DeGeneres, will air on Sunday, March 2, live on ABC.
“Let It Go,” written by Kristen Anderson-Lopez and Robert Lopez for “Frozen,” is nominated for Original Song. The three other nominated songs are "Happy" from "Despicable Me 2," "Ordinary Love" from "Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom" and "The Moon Song" from "Her."
Menzel won a Tony Award for her performance as Elphaba in the original Broadway production of Wicked. She received a Tony nomination for her Broadway debut in Rent and earned a Drama Desk nomination for her performance in Manhattan Theater Club’s Off-Broadway musical The Wild Party. In March, Menzel will star in If/Then, a new Broadway musical about a woman moving back to New York City for a fresh start. In addition to “Frozen,” in which she voices the character of Elsa, Menzel’s film appearances include “Enchanted,” “Ask the Dust” and “Rent.”
Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2013 will be presented on Oscar Sunday, March 2, 2014, at the Dolby Theatre® at Hollywood & Highland Center® and televised live on the ABC Television Network. Warner Bros. Bringing Tarzan Back to the Big Screen in 3D

Pictures announced today that the Studio has entered into pre-production on a new live-action 3D Tarzan action adventure, bringing Edgar Rice Burroughs’ legendary character back to the big screen. The announcement was made today by Greg Silverman, President, Creative Development and Worldwide Production, and Sue Kroll, President, Worldwide Marketing and International Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures.
Dan Fellman, President, Domestic Distribution, Warner Bros. Pictures, also announced that the film has been slated to open domestically on July 1, 2016.
Alexander Skarsgård (HBO’s “True Blood”) has been set to star as the man who was orphaned as a baby and raised in the jungle, later to return to the urban jungle of London. The film also stars Oscar® nominee Samuel L. Jackson (“Pulp Fiction”); Margot Robbie (“The Wolf of Wall Street”), as Jane Porter, who becomes the love of Tarzan’s life; and two-time Academy Award® winner Christoph Waltz (“Inglourious Basterds,” “Django Unchained”).
David Yates, who helmed the last four “Harry Potter” blockbusters, will direct the new feature from a screenplay based on the works of Edgar Rice Burroughs. A Jerry Weintraub production, the film is being produced by Weintraub (“Behind the Candelabra,” the “Ocean’s” trilogy), together with David Barron and Alan Riche.

Review: "The Iron Giant" is Still a Giant (Happy B'day, Jennifer Aniston)

The subject of this movie review is The Iron Giant, a 1999 animated science fiction film from director Brad Bird. The film is based on the 1968 novel, The Iron Man, by author Ted Hughes. The Iron Giant focuses on a boy who befriends a giant alien robot and then fights to protect that robot from the paranoid government agent who wants to destroy it.
Among the many popular animated films of 1999 (which included Disney’s Tarzan and the “South Park” feature film), one got lost in the crowd, a great family film with a message and heart. It was The Iron Giant, a Cold War fable with a timeless message and was directed by Brad Bird, who at the time was known for his work on “The Simpsons” and is currently getting attention for directing Disney/Pixar’s The Incredibles.
Based upon a book by Ted Hughes, the film was the story of Hogarth Hughes (Eli Marienthal), a boy with a love for comics and sci-fi monster movies and who has an active imagination, and an innocent giant alien robot (Vin Diesel) the boy befriends. Now, the robot is difficult to hide and eventually his presence earns the attention of Kent Mansley (Christopher MacDonald), a government agent who wants to destroy the robot. Hogarth is afraid to tell his mother, Annie Hughes (Jennifer Aniston), a single parent, about his giant robot friend, but he luckily befriends an easy going beatnik artist named Dean McCoppin (Harry Connick, Jr.). Dean runs a scrap yard, which proves to be a good source of food for the metal-eating giant, but how long can Hogarth and Dean hide the giant robot from the men who want to destroy him?
The Iron Giant’s story is very similar to that of E.T.: The Extraterrestrial, another story about a boy who befriends an innocent alien hounded by military types that want to hurt him. The moral or message of The Iron Giant is not necessarily entirely about peace, but is more about choosing peace and defending oneself only when one is sure of his enemy instead of attacking the unknown because of paranoia, ignorance, and fear. The film is also a heartfelt drama with many comic moments and lots of action and adventure aimed at the young-at-heart and those who still can recall child-like wonder. The script lightly draws the characters, but gives enough of them to make the premise work.
The quality of the animation (2-D or traditional hand drawn with some CGI) is very high quality; in fact, it’s hard to tell that the “Iron Giant” is completely computer animated because the character fits in so well with the hand drawn figures. The animation is not as fluid as the best of Disney, but this film looks as if it could have come out of the Disney animation studios that produced 101 Dalmatians or The Jungle Book. I heartily recommend this film to animation and sci-fi fans, and I especially recommend it for family viewing.

New York Film Retrospective Celebrates Scorsese-DiCaprio Collaboration

Bow Tie Cinemas Ziegfeld Theater will celebrate the longtime collaboration between Academy Award®-winning filmmaker Martin Scorsese and Academy Award®-nominated actor Leonardo DiCaprio with a two day, five film retrospective on February 13th and 14th.
Kent Jones of the New York Film Society at Lincoln Center will moderate a conversation with DiCaprio, Academy Award®-winning editor Thelma Schoonmaker and Academy Award®-nominated writer Terence Winter prior to the screening of their latest film, “THE WOLF OF WALL STREET,” which has been nominated for five Academy Awards®, including Best Picture, Best Directing, Best Actor and Best Adapted Screenplay.
The series begins on Thursday, February 13th with screenings of “THE AVIATOR” and “THE DEPARTED,” followed by a panel discussion at 7:00 p.m. and the “THE WOLF OF WALL STREET.” Friday’s schedule includes “SHUTTER ISLAND” and “GANGS OF NEW YORK.” All films will be presented in DCIP Digital format.
